Heated debate between Barrister Gohar, Salman Raja at KP House, claims journalist

Journalist Haider Sherazi claimed on Wednesday that a heated debate occurred between Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Barrister Gohar Khan and Secretary General Salman Akram Raja at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) House, Islamabad on Tuesday when the latter said that there should have been an expression of solidarity with the party founder’s sister for not letting them visit Adiala Jail earlier in the week.

Appearing on a private news channel, the journalist said that in response to Raja’s claims, Gohar stated that Imran Khan was being regularly visited in jail by party leaders in the past, and Raja’s name was not on the list on several occasions, yet he still managed to meet Imran Khan; therefore, this matter should not be brought under discussion.

On Tuesday, Imran Khan’s sisters were barred from meeting her brother at Adiala Jail. However, Barrister Gohar, Barrister Ali Zafar, Zaheer Abbas, and other lawyers were allowed to enter the jail, media reports had earlier claimed.

Meanwhile, as per a leading English newspaper, despite the names of Barrister Gohar and Ali Zafar not being included in the list handed over to Adiala jail authorities, both visited Imran Khan. To this, some PTI members raised objections.

Following Raja’s word ‘Manzoor-e-Nazar’ (favorite), purportedly used for Senator Ali Zafar, the latter expressed regret over the remarks. The Senator, while talking to media outside Islamabad High Court (IHC) had claimed that Raja’s comments regarding the meeting with the founder of the PTI have created a new controversy.

In a conversation with the media at Parliament House on Wednesday, Gohar, while calling Ali Zafar “an honest man”, stressed, “I want to unite the party, even if I have to leave my position. I express serious reservations about the word Manzoor-e-Nazar.”

The PTI secretary general told journalists that it was decided with everyone’s consent that he would give six names of lawyers, whereas on Tuesday, the names of the six lawyers he gave were not allowed as only Manzoor-e-Nazar were allowed to meet Imran Khan.

The PTI Secretary General said that Imran Khan had not called anyone on Tuesday as he had spoken to the family, and they were fine. Raja categorically cleared that in the future, anyone whose name was not on the list should not meet Imran Khan.

  • Mothers can’t be denied child custody if she remarries: Lahore High Court

Mothers can’t be denied child custody if she remarries: Lahore High Court

The Lahore High Court has ruled that a mother cannot be denied the custody of her minor child solely on the basis of her getting married again, a leading English newspaper has reported.

Stressing that the wellbeing of the child must take precedence over all else, Justice Syed Ahsan Raza set aside rulings of appellate and trial courts which had granted custody of a 10-year-old boy to his father.

The child’s parents had gotten married in 2012 and then divorced via a court decree.

Justice Ahsan ruled that the child must immediately be handed over to his mother, from whom he had been taken.

“In exceptional circumstances, and if deemed in the best interest of the minor, custody can be awarded to a mother who has remarried,” the judge stated.

“It is an admitted fact that the minor had lived his entire life with the petitioner (mother), and to remove him from her custody solely due to her remarriage is not a legally or morally sufficient standard,” the judgment read.

The mother’s lawyer had argued before the court that she was the best option to care for the child’s health, education and emotional needs. The father’s lawyers had argued that the mother’s remarriage had rendered her ineligible for raising the boy.

Justice Kazmi noted that legality of the case depended on whether the mother’s remarriage alone disqualified her from custody and whether her financial status had been fairly assessed.

He said that both lower courts had erred by relying exclusively on the two factors to award custody to the father.

  • ‘Trump asked to bring Shakil Afridi to US’

‘Trump asked to bring Shakil Afridi to US’

Former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail on Tuesday claimed US President Donald Trump has been asked to bring Shakil Afridi, a Pakistani physician convicted of espionage, to America.

Afridi was accused of assisting the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in obtaining DNA samples of former Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden through a fake vaccination campaign. Afridi was arrested near Peshawar, two weeks after Osama’s death.

Appearing on a private media outlet, the ex-Finance Minister said that former United States (US) Vice President Mike Pence had initially demanded of then Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi that Shakil Afridi be released.

Following the demand, Miftah said that the matter was discussed in the National Security Council (NSC) meeting, adding that during the meeting, the release of Pakistani neuroscientist Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was also discussed.

Miftah said, “At one time, there was a consensus among all state institutions and political leaders that the prisoner [Shakil Afridi] should be sent to America,” adding that the release might give a psychological win to Trump, which doesn’t cost anything to Pakistan.

“You are pointing towards Shakil Afridi, who was involved in espionage in Pakistan. If we talk about him, we would have to talk about Dr. Aafia Siddiqui too,” said the programme host. In response, Miftah agreed with the host’s suggestions, saying, “At one point, the government also had the same stance.”

In September 2010, Siddiqui was sentenced to 86 years of imprisonment by a US federal court in Manhattan after she was convicted of firing at US troops in Afghanistan while in their custody and six other charges brought against her.

Miftah maintained that Siddiqui could also be brought back to Pakistan on humanitarian grounds since she had been imprisoned for so long. “There is no harm in taking the first step if we have to save the country’s exports and jobs,” he opined while viewing the Trump tariff policy.

It merits a mention that two months ago, Siddiqui’s American lawyer Clive Smith had suggested the swap of the neuroscientist with Afridi. However, the federal government informed the court that the proposal was not feasible.

Additional Attorney General (AAG) Munawar Iqbal Duggal informed the court that there is no agreement between Pakistan and the US for the exchange of prisoners. He emphasized that both Afridi and Siddiqui were Pakistani citizens, and such an exchange would not be legally or diplomatically viable.

  • Journalist claims Azam Swati urged Imran Khan to allow dialogue ’15-20 times’

Journalist claims Azam Swati urged Imran Khan to allow dialogue ’15-20 times’

Journalist Fahad Shehbaz Khan claimed on Monday that senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Azam Swati, during his visit to Adiala Jail on Eid day, asked former Prime Minister Imran Khan 15-20 times to give him permission for dialogue with the establishment.

In a video statement, the journalist said that in the 30-minute meeting, Swati emphasized that the path of reconciliation must be followed.

Fahad further claimed that Swati, while listing his sacrifices to Imran Khan, said that he personally bore the expenses of 1,100 prisoners — from cigarettes to food. “I treated the imprisoned boys in jails like my own sons,” the journalist quoted Swati as saying.

Fahad stated that Swati complained to Imran Khan that the latter had awarded party posts to an individual who used to refer to him and his father with derogatory names. “There was also one personality present in the conference room meeting at Adiala Jail along with Swati. On every concern that Swati raised, Imran Khan told the individual what to do,” said the journalist.

Touching upon the 26th Constitutional Amendment and the February 8 general election, Imran Khan said that he knows the incumbent government better than Swati, said the journalist, adding that Imran Khan informed the leader that the government would use delaying tactics [regarding dialogue].

“Even in the final moments, when Azam Swati was leaving the meeting, he was saying to Imran Khan, ‘Give me permission for negotiations,’ to which Imran Khan replied, ‘You’ve already tried twice before,’” said the journalist.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan confirmed that he instructed Swati to initiate dialogue with the military establishment, The News reported on Wednesday (today).

On Tuesday, while speaking to party leaders and lawyers during a meeting at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, the former premier emphasised that the outreach was not related to his legal cases but was done solely for the sake of Pakistan.

As per the report, Imran Khan told his visitors that he has never closed the door on dialogue with the establishment. However, he clarified that his party had ceased talks with the current government, which he described as lacking any real authority.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Senator Ali Zafar and lawyers Zaheer Abbas, Mubashar Awan, and Ali Imran were the visitors at Adiala Jail yesterday. However, Aleema Khan, along with his sisters, was barred from meeting her brother in jail.

In response to Swati’s recent video statement, Imran Khan was quoted as saying, “This is about Pakistan, democracy, the rule of law, and respecting the people’s mandate.”

Swati, in a video statement, had earlier revealed that the party founder had directed him to engage with the establishment while keeping the nature of the discussions confidential.

  • ‘Please go home’: Imran Khan’s detained sisters refuse to leave even after police set them free

‘Please go home’: Imran Khan’s detained sisters refuse to leave even after police set them free

Sisters of former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan, and at least two top Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, were briefly detained by the police for holding a sit-in outside Adiala Jail, saying they won’t leave until permitted to see the jailed party founder.

Sources, however, told The Current that Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, as well as PTI’s Aliya Hamza and Sahibzada Hamid Raza, were later set free when the police stopped the prisoner van at a distance from the jail and asked the detainees to go home.

“You’re not being taken to a police station… please go back to your homes,” sources quoted the police as saying, over which, they added, Khan’s sisters and Hamza refused to leave.

“If you have taken us into custody, then take us to the police station,” they reportedly told the police. The cops then dropped the detainees in front of a wedding hall, reports said, adding that after exiting the police van, the women sat on the lawn and refused to leave.

A peaceful sit-in, led by Imran Khan’s sisters, continued at the location by the time this report was filed.

Earlier, a clash broke out between PTI workers and police near Adiala Jail, leading to multiple arrests and a brief standoff.

The confrontation occurred at the Gorakhpur checkpoint, where PTI workers had gathered and chanted slogans after the party leaders were denied permission to meet the jailed party founder.

In response, police resorted to baton charging the protesters, while PTI supporters pelted stones at law enforcement personnel. Several PTI leaders and workers were taken into custody during the altercation.

The situation was defused after Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Omar Ayub intervened and assured police of cooperation.

PTI chief Barrister Gohar strongly condemned the arrests, saying that the court has clearly ordered that the family be allowed to meet the PTI founder, a private media outlet reported.

Barrister Gohar termed the detention of the PTI founder’s sisters “illegal and unconstitutional,” and asserted that no court order imposed conditional terms for such meetings.

“We did not pelt stones at police nor did we make any call for protest. We only came here to show support for the PTI founder’s sisters,” reports quoted him as saying.

    USEFP announces ending Global UGRAD-Pakistan

Hours after it was reported that United States (US) visas of over 400 students, including Pakistanis, had been revoked, the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) on Tuesday announced that the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) had been terminated for the country.

In a statement, USEFP said it regretted to inform that the programme, which provided one semester of US-based academic and cultural exchange to students from Pakistan, had come to an end after 15 years.

“We understand that this news may be disappointing, especially for those who applied this year and were looking forward to this opportunity. Over the years, the Global UGRAD Program has provided life-changing experiences to thousands of students, fostering academic growth, cultural exchange and leadership development,” it said.

USEFP went on to state that it was immensely proud of the impact the programme has had on its participants and the communities it had touched.

“We sincerely appreciate your interest in the program [sic] and the commitment to personal and academic growth. While this chapter is closing, we encourage you to explore other exchange and scholarship opportunities that may align with your aspirations,” it concluded, which aspirants the best for their academic and professional journeys.

While an official reason behind the termination of the programme has not yet been reported, the statement comes hours after the US abruptly cancelled the visas of more than 400 international students, including Pakistanis and Muslims from other countries, without prior notice or legal proceedings.

According to media reports, while there could be several reasons behind the cancellations, officials associated with colleges and universities suggested that the government was taking the action quietly as the Donald Trump administration was reportedly targeting students who had participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

However, reports added, some students had their visas cancelled despite not taking part in any protest.

Among the affected students are those pursuing an education at Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, University of Michigan, Central Michigan University, Colorado State University, Minnesota State University and several others institutions.

The majority of the visa cancellations reportedly occurred during an audit of the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System), reports said, adding that universities were currently providing legal assistance and support to affected students.

Student organisations have also raised questions about violations of due process.

Will remain outside Adiala Jail until allowed to meet Imran Khan: Aleema Khan

The sister of incarcerated former premier Imran Khan, Aleema Khan, has stated that she will peacefully remain outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi until she is allowed to meet her brother.

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail today, Aleema, who was accompanied by her sisters,  said that she was expected to meet Imran Khan in jail at 2 pm. She vowed to hold a protest if denied a meeting with her incarcerated brother.

In response to a question from a reporter, Aleema said that she had not been allowed to meet Imran Khan since March 20, adding that authorities did not reveal the reason for her being denied access to visit Adiala Jail.

However, Chairman PTI Barrister Gohar Khan, Barrister Ali Zafar, Zaheer Abbas, and other lawyers were allowed to enter the jail, media reports claims.

Aleema further said that a police force had been deployed so that they could not meet her brother. “Why aren’t they letting us meet,” she inquired.

Meanwhile, as per media reports, Aleema’s statement has prompted Rawalpindi police to implement extraordinary security measures around the prison.

Viewing the law and order situation, comprehensive security arrangements have been finalized, and special security teams have been formed under the supervision of Superintendent Police (SP) Saddar Division to secure the jail and surrounding areas.

Checkpoints have been established on seven entry routes leading to the jail. Elite Force personnel are stationed in the vicinity, and a large contingent of female police officers has been deployed at the Adiala Police Post.

Meanwhile, media reports claimed that traffic police would be positioned outside the jail to ensure smooth traffic flow during the protest.

  • PTI leader meets jailed Imran Khan on Eid, asks for ticket in return for all ‘sacrifices’

PTI leader meets jailed Imran Khan on Eid, asks for ticket in return for all ‘sacrifices’

YouTuber Siddique Jan has claimed that a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader on Eid visited incarcerated party founder Imran Khan in jail and demanded that they be awarded a ticket for having made “several sacrifices”.

In a recent interview, Jan said the party leader told Khan he wanted to contest elections under the PTI’s banner and also requested the former premier to allot him a constituency.

“Khan Sahib, I have made several sacrifices for the party… I deserve identity and recognition,” the YouTuber, without revealing any names, quoted the party member as saying to Khan at Adiala Jail on the second day of Eid.

While he did not reveal any names, Jan clarified the leader in question was not Azam Khan Swati. When pressed by the host to name the PTI member, the YouTube told him to “check the list of visitors”.

During the interview, Jan also declared a recent tweet by absconding PTI leader and former federal minister Murad Saeed “a complete roadmap for Imran Khan’s release”.

He went on to question how many from among the party’s incumbent leadership had expressed support for the plan.

“PTI’s founder and chairman, Imran Khan, had announced the next phase of the movement after Eid. The youth of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who stayed at the Bani Gala and Zaman Park camps for a year and cleared the way for caravans during every major activity—braving all kinds of oppression and fascism—will, God willing, be honored at the Janisaran-e-Imran Khan Convention on April 7,” Saeed had tweeted on April 3.

The former minister had further claimed that on April 11, he would speak in detail at the grand jirga of his constituency on a two-point agenda: the release of Imran Khan, his spouse Bushra Bibi, and other leadership and workers besides the restoration of peace.

“The way Punjab came out on March 23 clearly shows that the workers in Punjab are prepared, and the way women are actively leading the movement is exemplary and a source of pride. Youth from North Punjab have been advised to continue the series of flash protests while staying focused on preparing for the next phase of the movement. A detailed action plan, which was to be shared with the youth of North Punjab on Friday as per the scheduled program, could not be shared—but God willing, progress on that will also follow soon,” he had added.

US cancels over 400 student visas for Pakistanis, others

The United States (US) has suddenly cancelled the visas of more than 400 international students, including Pakistanis and Muslims from other countries, without prior notice or legal proceedings, American media reported on Monday.

While there could be several reasons behind the cancellations, officials associated with colleges and universities suggest that the government is taking the action quietly as the Trump administration is reportedly targeting students who have participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. However, some students had their visas cancelled despite not taking part in any protest.

Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Michigan, Central Michigan University, Colorado State University, Minnesota State University, and several others are among the institutions whose students have been affected.

As per media reports, 12 students and graduates at UCLA had their visas revoked, while a student from the University of Michigan has already left the country.

The majority of the visa cancellations reportedly occurred during an audit of the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System).

Meanwhile, universities are currently providing legal assistance and support to affected students. However, visa cancellations have created anxiety among international students. Student organizations have also raised questions about violations of due process.

On March 25, the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio laid out instructions in a long cable sent to diplomatic missions, instructing them to thoroughly review the social media activities of visa applicants in an effort to bar those suspected of criticizing US and Israel from entering the country, The New York Times had reported.

Rubio further emphasized that the move aims to block entry into the U.S. for individuals who express critical views about American foreign policy.

The edict comes just over two months after President Trump signed executive orders to begin a widespread effort to deport people in the U.S., such as those who may have “hostile attitudes” toward American “citizens, culture, government, institutions or founding principles.”

Trump also put forward an executive order to start cracking down on what he referred to as antisemitism, including deporting students who took part in campus protests against Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Rubio’s instructions stated that starting immediately, consular officers have to refer some student and exchange visitor visa applications to the “fraud prevention unit” for a “mandatory social media check” American media reports.

  • US-based businessmen, doctors meet Imran Khan in jail: report

US-based businessmen, doctors meet Imran Khan in jail: report

A group of Pakistani doctors and businessmen based in the United States (US) met with a senior official in Islamabad and the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, a daily Urdu newspaper reported on Monday.

According to the outlet, the meeting was part of efforts by PTI and its supporters to secure some form of relief for the incarcerated former premier Imran Khan.

These backchannel efforts are separate from earlier behind-the-scenes negotiations held between PTI and relevant quarters. However, claims suggest that the party’s backchannel talks with the establishment may resume, though no progress has been made so far.

A media outlet reported that the success of such efforts largely depends on PTI’s social media behaviour and Khan’s own stance. PTI’s social media platforms, along with its overseas chapters—particularly those in the US and UK—have consistently targeted the military and its top leadership.

Meanwhile, in his lengthy video statement recounting his recent meeting with Imran Khan, PTI leader Azam Khan Swati claims the party leader had tasked him with reaching out to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Asim Munir following the latter’s appointment in 2022 to open the door for negotiations.

Swati shared that after his meeting with the jailed Imran Khan, he reached out to a close associate of Gen Munir and a renowned anchorperson but to no avail.

Swati further stated that if the establishment is prepared to negotiate, Imran Khan is still willing to come to the table, adding that he had Khan’s blessing to initiate talks to secure his freedom.

He quoted Khan as saying, “If they are ready for talks, I am willing — like I was from day one.”

Swati also shared that he had repeatedly told the party leader he had “Khotay sikkay” (mutilated coins) in his pocket.

Without naming anyone, Swati criticised “certain vloggers and anchors for selling a false story”.

Hitting out at those claiming that Imran Khan had given him a “shut-up call” for proposing talks with the establishment, Swati maintained that no one had made more sacrifices, apart from martyrs, than he and his family.

“I have faced torture, and I have shared all details with Imran Khan. I am the one who cared about the 1,100 workers in jail and made efforts to secure their bails,” he added.
