Punjab foils major terror plans as RAW-linked operative among 49 arrested

Punjab’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has claimed to have foiled major terror plans with the arrest of 49 suspected terrorists during a month-long province-wide crackdown.

The operation also included the arrest of a “dangerous operative” allegedly linked to India’s intelligence agency RAW.

CTD officials identified the suspect as Mujtaba, who was arrested during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the provincial capital.

A large quantity of explosives and maps of important buildings were also recovered, indicating plans to target sensitive installations in multiple cities.

In a statement, a CTD spokesperson said the arrests were made after 425 IBOs across Punjab to pre-empt potential terrorist activity. During these operations, 427 suspects were also questioned.

Thr 49 arrests were made across multiple districts, including Lahore, Sahiwal, Rawalpindi, Toba Tek Singh, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Jhelum, Dera Ghazi Khan, Faisalabad, Chiniot, Pakpattan, Khushab, Okara, Attock, Sheikhupura, and Vehari.

As per the details of recovered arms, CTD  seized 16,480 grams of explosives, two hand grenades, 36 detonators, 58 feet of safety fuse wire, six improvised explosive devices (IEDs), pamphlets and magazines of banned organisations, SIM cards, mobile phones and cash.

The spokesperson said that 44 cases had been registered against the arrested individuals, with further investigation ongoing to determine their networks and facilitators.

Separately, CTD, with support from local police and other security agencies, conducted 6,131 combing operations across the province. During these operations, 243,546 individuals were checked, 599 suspects arrested, 568 FIRs registered and 477 recoveries made.

Reaffirming its commitment to security, the CTD spokesperson said the department would continue action against terrorists and anti-state elements and urged citizens to report suspicious activity to the CTD Punjab helpline at 0800-11111.

‘Who installed 4G there?’ CM Bugti questions internet towers in remote areas

Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Sarfraz Bugti on Friday raised concerns over the presence of internet towers in sparsely populated areas of the province, warning that such infrastructure could be ‘exploited for activities against the state’.

Addressing a presser in Quetta, CM Bugti said he was surprised to see internet facilities in areas with little to no population, including Sangan.

“When I fly over in a helicopter, 4G services are running there. Who put them up, and why?” he asked, adding that such facilities could be misused by militants against the state and law enforcement agencies.

The chief minister also announced a Rs3 billion project to lay fibre optic cables across schools, colleges, universities and hospitals throughout the province.

He said the initiative aims to expand internet access for the public while ensuring that its usage remains monitored.

Briefing the media on the security situation, CM Bugti said the Frontier Corps (FC) neutralised 12 terrorists during a recent operation in Kharan town.

He said the militants were killed while attempting to loot banks, adding that around 15 to 20 individuals had tried to enter banking facilities in the town.

According to Bugti, one civilian sustained injuries during the operation and is currently under treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

He further stated that four of the militants were killed on the spot by law enforcement personnel at three separate locations.

The attackers attempted to break ATMs and flee with cash, with some managing to steal Rs3.4 million from one bank, he added.

Free rickshaws, mandatory helmets for motorcycle passengers: Punjab’s safety plan for Basant unveiled

A detailed 27-point safety plan for Basant has been presented by Punjab Police to the Lahore High Court.

Although kite flying remains banned across Punjab, the provincial government has allowed limited Basant festivities to be celebrated in Lahore on February 6, 7 and 8, marking the return of the traditional festival after decades.

The plan states that 5,000 free rickshaws will be deployed across the city, while any motorcycles without safety antennas will not be allowed to enter red zones. All motorcycle riders including passengers, must wear helmets.

Chemical and glass string will remain strictly banned with only cotton thread string permitted to fly kites. Quick emergency response teams will be deployed throughout the city to handle emergencies.

All Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, RPOs and DPOs have been tasked with ensuring that preparation and usage of kites and strings is only carried out in permitted areas.

  • Pakistan-US defence ties strengthen further amid joint training, arms sales & Trump’s praise

Pakistan-US defence ties strengthen further amid joint training, arms sales & Trump’s praise

Military-to-military relations between Pakistan and the United States (US) appear to be entering a new phase of cooperation, marked by joint training exercises, major defence sales and unusually warm rhetoric from President Donald Trump towards Islamabad’s military leadership.

According to a statement issued by the US Central Command (Centcom), American and Pakistani troops this week concluded joint training at Pakistan’s National Counter-Terrorism Center in Pabbi. The exercise, dubbed Inspired Gambit, focused on combined infantry skills, tactics and counterterrorism operations. Centcom said such engagements “strengthen our long-standing defense ties.”

The training comes against the backdrop of broader re-engagement between the two defence establishments.

In December, Washington approved a $686 million package to upgrade Pakistan’s fleet of F-16 fighter aircraft. The deal followed heightened regional tensions after Pakistan and India fought a brief but intense five-day conflict in May 2025. Pakistan is believed to operate between 70 and 80 F-16s, ranging from upgraded Block-15 aircraft to newer Block-52+ models. US officials have long described the programme as a cornerstone of bilateral military cooperation.

Political signaling from Washington has also drawn attention. President Trump has repeatedly praised Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, referring to him publicly as his “favourite field marshal”.

In a year-end briefing on December 31, Trump claimed Pakistani leaders credited him with preventing a wider catastrophe during the May conflict, saying he “saved 10 million lives, maybe more”.

Trump’s remarks at the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in October 2025 again highlighted Field Marshal Munir, alongside Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif. Since returning to the White House in January for a second term, Trump has publicly praised Pakistan’s army chief at least ten times. In June 2025, he also hosted Munir at the White House for a lunch meeting – the first time a sitting US president formally received Pakistan’s military leader.

Analysts suggest Washington’s renewed focus on the Middle East, particularly Gaza and Iran, combined with Pakistan’s air force performance during the May conflict, has encouraged closer defence ties. Islamabad has also signaled willingness to join a US-led stabilisation force for Gaza, a controversial proposal advanced by Trump.

Recent military exercises, arms sales, and high-level engagement suggest defence ties between Washington and Islamabad are entering a new, more pragmatic phase, with both sides signaling readiness to deepen cooperation.

At least 24 dead in two separate road accidents in Punjab, Balochistan

At least 24 people were killed and over 50 others injured in two separate road accidents as a truck plunged into a dry canal in Punjab’s Sargodha district and a passenger coach overturned near Ormara in Balochistan.

According to reports, 14 people died and nine others sustained injuries in Sargodha where a truck carrying cargo and passengers fell off the Galapur Bangla Bridge, into the dry canal, due to fog.

The crash occurred after thick fog reduced visibility in Kot Momin’s city area, causing the driver to lose control.

The truck was carrying a total of 23 people, of which seven crash victims were crushed under the vehicle and died on the spot, rescue officials said.

Another seven victims died during treatment at a nearby hospital, they added.

The deceased included six children and five women, all of whom were traveling to attend a funeral.

In a separate incident, at least 10 people died and 45 others sustained injuries when a passenger coach carrying 50 passengers overturned near Ormara in Balochistan.

According to reports, the coach was traveling from Karachi to Gwadar when it lost control due to high speed and turned turtle.

Medical teams airlifted the injured to Karachi via Pakistan Navy ATR aircraft for treatment.

‘Genuinely mutually beneficial’: Putin on Pak-Russia relations

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has praised Pakistan-Russia relations as “genuinely mutually beneficial”.

Taking to its official account on X, the Russian embassy in Pakistan quoted Putin: “We maintain close cooperation with Pakistan, a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the largest regional organisation in terms of economic, technological, and human potential. Russia-Pakistan relations are genuinely mutually beneficial.”

The Russian president reportedly said the words when the Pakistani ambassador to Russia, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, presented his credentials to him on Thursday at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow.

Pakistani and Russian diplomatic relations are on the rise since 2023 when Pakistan added Russian oil to its energy portfolio.

In December 2025, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb told the press that the two countries were holding talks about a new oil sector agreement.

The wedding celebrations of Junaid Safdar, grandson of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and son of Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz, have officially begun with a grand mehndi ceremony held in Jati Umra on Friday evening.

The mehndi function for Junaid and his bride, Shanzeh Ali Rohale, brought together close relatives, family members and distinguished guests from both families.

Junaid marked the occasion by sharing his first photograph with Shanzeh, who is the granddaughter of PML-N leader Rohail Asghar, on Instagram. CM Maryam could also be seen in the photograph.

The groom wore a navy-coloured HSY sherwani, layered with a coordinating brown shawl while Shanzeh wore a dark green Sabyasachi lehenga.

Event planners invited renowned dancer Wahab Shah as a special guest to perform at the mehndi ceremony.

The hosts also arranged a traditional feast for approximately 350 guests, with the menu including soup, chicken dum pukht, dal gosht, aloo gosht, white rice, barbecue, gajar ka halwa and dal ka halwa.

The baraat event is scheduled for today (January 17), followed by the valima ceremony on January 18.

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, federal and provincial ministers among other prominent political and social figures are expected to attend the events.

  • Mahmood Khan Achakzai is the new opposition leader in National Assembly

Mahmood Khan Achakzai is the new opposition leader in National Assembly

Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq on Friday notified Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the new opposition leader in the lower house, months after the post was left vacant after Omar Ayub was sentenced to imprisonment.

Achakzai, who also heads the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), was nominated for the position by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan following the disqualification of his predecessor Omar Ayub, who was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in a May 9 case.

“In pursuance of rule 39 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in NA, 2007, honourable speaker has been pleased to declare Mahmood Khan Achakzai, MNA, as Leader of the Opposition in NA with effect from January 16, 2026,” read the notification issued by NA acting Secretary Saeed Ahmad Maitla.

The notification followed a meeting between NA Speaker Sadiq and a delegation of opposition lawmakers, including PTI leaders Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Junaid Akbar, Aamir Dogar, Shahram Khan Tarakai, Latif Khosa and Jamal Ahsan Khan.

Achakzai’s appointment comes at a critical juncture as he has called for a national dialogue among all political parties to help steer the country out of crisis. PTI leaders have emphasised that the mandate to engage with the ruling coalition rests with Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

Speaking to a private news channel, senior PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Imran Khan had authorised Achakzai to negotiate with the government. “Achakzai can decide better what to do,” he added.

Since Imran Khan’s ouster through a vote of no-confidence in April 2022, PTI has been at odds with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). The party has staged multiple marches towards Islamabad, leading to police crackdowns and arrests.

PTI also faces challenges on the political and legal fronts, with its founder Imran Khan and senior leaders including Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Yasmin Rashid in custody over alleged involvement in the May 9 incidents.

  • Pak-Saudi-Turkiye defence pact in pipeline, confirms minister

Pak-Saudi-Turkiye defence pact in pipeline, confirms minister

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye have prepared a draft defence agreement after nearly a year of discussions, Pakistan’s Minister for Defence Production Raza Hayat Harraj has said, signaling a possible effort to strengthen regional security amid rising tensions over the past two years.

The minister told Reuters that the potential trilateral deal is separate from the bilateral Saudi-Pakistan agreement announced last year. He added that a final consensus between all three countries would be required to finalise the accord.

“The Pakistan-Saudi Arabia-Türkiye trilateral agreement is something that is already in the pipeline,” Harraj said in an interview.

“The draft agreement is already with us, with Saudi Arabia, and with Türkiye. All three countries are deliberating. This agreement has been under discussion for the last 10 months.”

Commenting on the matter at a press conference in Istanbul on Thursday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said talks had taken place but no agreement had yet been signed.

Fidan emphasised the need for broader regional cooperation and trust to address the “cracks and problems” that have led to external interference, wars, terrorism, and instability in the region.

“At the end of all of these, we have a proposal like this: all regional nations must come together to create a cooperation platform on the issue of security,” Fidan said. Regional issues could be resolved if relevant countries would “be sure of each other,” he added.

“At the moment, there are meetings and talks, but no agreement has been signed. President Tayyip Erdogan envisions an inclusive platform that fosters wider cooperation and stability,” Fidan said, without directly naming Pakistan or Saudi Arabia.

  • ‘No ban on politics, only on abuse’: Rana Sanaullah on Imran Khan’s jail meetings

‘No ban on politics, only on abuse’: Rana Sanaullah on Imran Khan’s jail meetings

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Thursday said there was no ban on political discussion during meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan, but restrictions were imposed due to violations of court undertakings and the use of jail meetings for what he described as political conduct.

Speaking on a private news channel’s program, Rana Sanaullah said the issue of meetings had been blown out of proportion and could be resolved if High Court orders were implemented “in letter and spirit.”

Responding to a question about restrictions on political speech, Rana Sanaullah rejected the allegation outright.

“There is only one restriction,” he said. “No abuse against the country, the state, institutions, or the heads of institutions.”

He added, “If that is avoided, who can stop anyone from talking about politics?”

When asked whether Imran Khan had ever spoken against Pakistan, Rana Sanaullah maintained that while the former prime minister may not have directly targeted the country, he had repeatedly crossed lines elsewhere.

“He abuses everyone, there is less politics and more abuse,” he said.

However, he acknowledged that criticism related to international lobbying and IMF matters had been directed against political opponents, not the country itself.

“If the IMF tranche is delayed, the loss is Pakistan’s,” Rana Sanaullah said.

Rana Sanaullah also claimed that recordings exist of Imran Khan’s statements, though he said they could not be aired during the programme.

He maintained that institutions had been criticised.

At this point, journalist Hamid Mir intervened, asking whether the remarks were of the kind “that you yourself used to make 30 to 35 years ago.”

Before the discussion concluded, Hamid Mir also asked Rana Sanaullah to at least let him hear the alleged recording off-air so he could inform viewers whether the remarks in question were objectionable or not.
