‘She got slapped’: Indian users react to Shehbaz Sharif’s sharp response to question

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif’s blunt reply to an Indian journalist’s question on cross-border terrorism elicited strong reactions from Indian social media users.

Upon arrival at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), when a reporter from Asian News International (ANI) asked the premier on Friday, “When are you going to stop cross-border terrorism?” he shot back that Pakistan is “defeating” India in cross-border terrorism.

Viewing PM Shehbaz’s sharp response, many Indian netizens took no time to slam the ANI and its reporter, with some raising questions about journalism ethics.

A social media user, while calling the question “powerful,” expressed concern, saying, “Pakistan will try something similar with EAM (External Affairs Minister) Jaishankar tonight!!”.

One netizen called it a “Media stunt”. The user said, “If Indians need to stop terrorism that emanates from Pakistan, the fight would have to be on the battleground and not on media space.”

One social media account called it the “worst form of journalism,” and another rebuked the journalist, calling her “shameful”, for degrading the standards of the profession.

“I feel sorry for the woman asking a question; she got slapped so hard in front of fellow journalists that she suddenly became defensive,” said another.

One user advised the reporter to “stick to journalism not activism”. Another called out ANI, saying that it has asked “more questions to the Pakistani PM than he asked to the Indian PM in 4000 days.”

“ANI must be taught how to interview,” one person maintained, while another stated that “Godi journalists [are a] source of embarrassment for Indians around the world”.

One particularly scathing post read: “Entire ANI and its loonie toons are perfect clowns, who leave no stone unturned each week to bring SHAME upon India on the global stage.”

  • ‘Foreign office discretion’; Kh Asif distances himself from ‘Pro-Israel’ Shama Junejo

‘Foreign office discretion’; Kh Asif distances himself from ‘Pro-Israel’ Shama Junejo

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Friday distanced himself from the storm of criticism that erupted online  after Dr. Shama Junejo, who is alleged to be pro-Israel, was spotted sitting right behind him at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) earlier this week.

After Shama was spotted as part of Pakistan’s official delegation at the UN, critics unearthed her old tweets, claiming she had previously “run a campaign to recognise Israel.”

On July 11, 2023, Shama tweeted: “Absolutely. I have been advocating on between and for years. That is why I am devastated to see them backing the wrong horse, Imran Khan [former premier]. As a staunch for Pakistan recognizing Israel, it pains me that the focus is being misguided towards IK [Imran Khan] instead of prioritizing the state of Pakistan.”

In another post, on January 11, 2023, she wrote, “I wish Pakistan could borrow this [National water carrier] technology from Israel. There is a reason I always advocate to recognize Israel (sic).”

Many social media users among politicians questioned the Government of Pakistan (GOP) for taking Shama to the UNSC in New York even as the Gaza genocide continues unabated.

Asif, a strong proponent of a Palestinian state, took to X (formerly Twitter), clarifying that he delivered a speech at the UNSC on behalf of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was busy, adding that it is and was in “the Foreign Office’s Discretion to decide” who can sit behind him.

“I have had an emotional attachment and commitment for 60 years to the Palestine issue,” he wrote, recalling that he befriended Palestinian colleagues during his employment in the Abu Dhabi bank, and he is still in contact with them.

Referring to Shama, he said questions such as “Who is this woman? Why was she with our delegation? Why was she seated behind me?” can only be answered by the Foreign Office (FO). “It is not appropriate for me to respond on their behalf,” he clarified.

He concluded by saying that the history of his X account is proof that his “bond with Palestine is part of my faith”.

  • Internet slams Shama Junejo for pro-Israeli stance

Internet slams Shama Junejo for pro-Israeli stance

Dr Shama Junejo, who is currently part of the official delegation representing Pakistan in the United Nations (UN), has issued a clarification after being slammed by social media users, politicians and journalists for allegedly being pro-Israel and for expressing admiration for the Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu, who is committing genocide in Gaza.

She was castigated after she was spotted seated right behind Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, a strong proponent of a Palestinian state, who was addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) earlier in the week.

“The woman accepting Israel, proudly met with the Israeli ambassador, is now included in Pakistan’s delegation, a unique honor. She probably also said that meeting the Israeli Prime Minister would be an honor,” a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry took to X to write that sitting behind the defence minister, “there is also a woman who has been running a campaign to recognise Israel. Khawaja Asif constantly speaks against Israel, but he also wants to stay close to the Israeli lobby.”

Many users questioned the Government of Pakistan (GOP) for taking the “pro-Israel” Shama to the UNSC in New York.

One user said, “This woman says that she has been working on recognising Israel for a long time. When she is appointed as the Prime Minister’s advisor on foreign affairs, the question will be whether the PML-N govt has decided to recognize Israel? She was given the task of writing a speech to the United Nations. She was taken on Air Force One as part of the official delegation to represent Pakistan in the General Assembly. The Foreign Ministry recognised her in support of Israel. Now, how will the Pakistani government be separated from all this? It is clear that the Pakistani government is going to recognize Israel, that is why a pro-Israel woman like Shamma Junejo is being given so much importance.”

“You cannot sit behind a minister in UNSC or UNGA unless [you] are identified as an official rep of GoP. So who allowed this to happen & why? Is there a covert policy agenda at work viz rogue entity Israel, Bagram base, Abraham Accords? GoP needs to come clean – who is responsible?” asked former minister Shireen Mazari.

Lawyer Benazir Jatoi, while highlighting the paradox of the government’s position on Israel, said, “Either @GovtofPakistan you stand with Palestine or you don’t. If you do, then why the hell did an intellectually low-level, Israel-apologist journalist @ShamaJunejo accompany you to the UNGA? Israel is committing a genocide as we type and you chose Shama at a time like this?!”

“Absolutely crazy! Under what rules was she inducted into Govt? Was there a notification? @ForeignOfficePk should publish list of people accompanying @CMShehbaz Sitting behind @KhawajaMAsif problematic. Officials related to [the] Ministry sit behind [the] Minister. Who made her delete Tweet?” asked veteran journalist Mariana Baber.

Author Ayesha Siddiqa opined, “[The] Problem is that Shama Junejo, despite being a total fake was one of the people regularly sitting with Nawaz and Shahbaz in London. She was probably rewarded firstly with a national award last year and now this trip. Of course, @CMShehbaz.”

The criticism compelled Shama to share four screenshots (SS) of her tweets, one from July this year and the rest from September 2025, all condemning Israel. While calling out her critics, Shama said in the caption that she is being called, a “Zionist”; nonetheless, she had called Netanyahu a “war criminal” in her tweets.

She stated that once again, a complete campaign was run against her because the trolls fear that she will expose the “fascist” in the United States (US) as she did in Britain.

The tweet did little to ally anger as all the tweets she put up in the screenshots were recent while the genocide in Gaza has been going on since almost two years.

Rs2.8 million to become a doctor? Punjab revises MDCAT fee for overseas Pakistanis

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved major healthcare reforms for the province, including a new admission policy for medical and dental colleges that requires children of overseas Pakistanis to pay a mandatory $10,000 (more than 2.8 million Pakistani rupees) fee in the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT).

Maryam Nawaz chaired a special meeting on health sector reforms where the govt finalized a new admission policy for public and private medical and dental colleges across Punjab.

Under the new policy, the government made passing the MDCAT test mandatory for all admissions to government medical colleges.

For private colleges, the meeting introduced a new fee and merit system to ensure transparency. Candidates named in the private medical college merit lists will have to deposit one-third of the total fee with the University of Health Sciences (UHS).

After the final merit list is released, UHS will transfer this amount to the respective college. Students will deposit the remaining fee directly at the private medical and dental college concerned after the final merit list is released.

The meeting also agreed on a proposal to introduce compulsory service after postgraduate training in private hospitals. The new policy mandates sending trainee doctors for specialization in relevant departments of private medical colleges according to the demand for specialists.

Indian trolls fume as Trump calls Shehbaz a “great guy”

Indian netizens were left fuming when United States (US) President Donald Trump hosted Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House’s Oval Office early Friday.

The meeting, which lasted more than an hour, was closed for the press.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) after the meeting said that the US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were also present, adding that the meeting was held in a pleasant atmosphere.

Speaking during the meeting, the premier praised the US leader’s bold, courageous, and decisive actions had helped facilitate the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, thereby averting what he called a potential “major catastrophe” in South Asia.

Minutes before the meeting, the US president spoke to the media, calling PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir “great” people. “We’ve got the prime minister of Pakistan coming and the field marshal … [he’s] a great, great guy and so is the prime minister, both,” he said.

The conflict between the two countries erupted following the April 22 Pahalgam incident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which killed 26 people. New Delhi accused Islamabad of orchestrating the attack, which the Islamabad vehemently rejected.

On the night of May 6-7, India launched strikes in Pakistan’s cities, including Bahawalpur and Muridke. In response, Pakistan shot down India’s six fighter jets, including three 4.5 French-made Rafales. The 88-hour-long conflict ended after the US intervened and announced a ceasefire between Pakistan and India on May 10.

The formal bilateral interaction between both countries’ leaders, which came after six years, has ruffled many Indian feathers.

“‘HAND-OUT’ CULTURE!” said Indian anchor Rahul Shivshankar on X (formerly Twitter), while sharing a picture featuring President Trump cordially shaking hands with the Pakistani premier, with COAS Field Marshal General Munir standing beside the US president, smiling.

Editor of Asian News Network (ANI) Smita Prakash, a known anti-Pakistan troll, captioned a photo “51st state”. A social media user in the comments section couldn’t control his frustration, writing, “Unofficial 51st state. Pakistan would be delighted if they were made one officially”.

Many Indians, smarting from America’s sudden tough policies and penalties on India, wrote: “Snakes in [the] USA’s front yard. Not the first time leaders of a terrorist state have got audience with [the] US President.” Another one wrote that the meeting was “pathetic”.

A netizen described the interaction of both countries’ leaders a “nightmare”. “American leader injecting himself with the worlds deadliest virus… beyond redemption…We are, remember this, paying the Price for adhering to their request or command of abruptly shelving op sindoor back in May 2025! Everything is the root cause of that event irrespective of what any of the so-called experts would like you to believe !!! Once you bend, D [The] humiliation never ends!!!!!(sic).” One troll users put his anger in words: “This is the MAGA [Make America Great Again] in making during Trump’s tenure. Good luck America.”

Meanwhile, one user lamented that “President Trump was dreaming [of having] Modi on one side of this picture. But despite doing all the tactics that the dream picture could not come to reality.”

A practical netizen praised Pakistan’s foreign policy, describing it as “professionally a good job.” “It’s ridiculous, of course, but I cannot stop and wonder about the brilliance of the mandarins in the Foreign Ministry in Pakistan who have done an exceedingly good job for their country. They shouldn’t succeed but, professionally, it’s a good job,” he stated.

President of the United States (US) Donald Trump hosted Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal General Asim Munir at the White House’s Oval Office in Washington DC, during the early hours of Friday morning.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were also present, a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) after the meeting said, adding that the meeting, which lasted more than one hour, was held in a pleasant atmosphere.

Speaking during the meeting, the premier said the US leader’s bold, courageous, and decisive actions had helped facilitate the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, thereby averting what he called a potential “major catastrophe” in South Asia.

Discussing the situation in the Middle East, PM Shehbaz hailed President Trump’s efforts to bring about an immediate end to the war in Gaza, especially his initiative to invite key leaders of the Muslim world to New York, earlier this week, for a comprehensive exchange of views for the restoration of peace in the Middle East, in particular, Gaza and the West Bank.

He also thanked President Trump for the tariff arrangement that was concluded between Pakistan and the US earlier this year, expressing the confidence that under President Trump’s leadership, the Islamabad-Washington DC partnership would be further strengthened to the mutual benefit of both countries.

Shehbaz Sharif invited US Companies to invest in Pakistan’s agriculture, IT, mines and minerals and energy sectors.

Discussing regional security, including counter-terrorism cooperation, the Prime Minister thanked President Trump for his public endorsement of Pakistan’s role in counter-terrorism, stressing the need to further enhance cooperation in security and intelligence.

Minutes before the meeting, the US president spoke to the media, calling PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir “great” people. “We’ve got the prime minister of Pakistan coming and the field marshal … [he’s] a great, great guy and so is the prime minister, both,” he said.

The first formal bilateral interaction between the two leaders came six years after former prime minister Imran Khan met President Trump during the latter’s first term in July 2019.

  • ‘FBR to tax TikTokers’

    ‘FBR to tax TikTokers’

In an effort to boost tax collection, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is strategising to impose taxes on TikTokers, it has emerged.

As per the details, Senator Faisal Vawda informed a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, that the tax watchdog was planning to tax TikTokers’ income.

He went on to say that the largest share of recoverable taxes would come from Punjab as the province has the largest number of internet users.

The move comes days after FBR collected data of around 100,000 individuals flaunting their wealth on social media, with the revenue watchdog reportedly poising to take action against them.

According to reports, FBR will audit 100,000 wealthy people in the initial phase and people showcasing their luxury lifestyle online, including mansions, expensive cars, jewelry and other assets, will have to disclose their source of income. Individuals wearing clothes worth as much as $20,000 as a sign of the extreme luxury at weddings, will also come under the tax net.

Meanwhile, the tax authority will also compare income tax returns submitted last year with those filed this year.

FBR has made it clear that individuals who provide accurate and updated information in their income tax returns will not be penalised. However, those who fail to disclose their lavish spending or luxury assets risk facing strict legal consequences.

  • FIR filed in Mumbai against Quaid-e-Azam’s grandson for ‘forgery’

FIR filed in Mumbai against Quaid-e-Azam’s grandson for ‘forgery’

The Mumbai police have filed a case against Nusli Nevil Wadia, the grandson of Pakistan’s founder Quaid-i-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah, and some of his family members, as well as others, for allegedly using forged and fabricated documents in their court proceedings against Ferani Hotels Pvt Ltd, a leading daily Indian newspaper has reported.

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered following orders by the metropolitan magistrate court at Borivili, which directed the Bangur Nagar police to register a case against 81-year-old business tycoon Nusli Wadia, Maureen Wadia, 78, Ness Wadia, 54, Jehangir Wadia, 52, H.J. Bamji, 75, K.F. Bharucha and R.E. Wandewala, 65, for alleged cheating and forgery.

The case revolves around a 30-year-old development agreement between Wadia and Ferani Hotels on a plot of land in Malad, which Ferani Hotels was to develop with builder K. Raheja, along with paying Wadia 12 percent of the gross sale proceeds.

However, disputes arose in 2008, leading to legal battles over Jinnah’s grandson’s share of sales and the management of the land. Mala fide, lack of authority, and commercial disputes are among the allegations in the case, which has proceeded through various courts, including the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court.

On Monday, the FIR was registered under Sections 3(5) (general explanations), 318(4) (cheating), 331(2) (punishment for house-trespass or house-breaking), 336(3) (forgery), 339 (possession of a document described in Section 337 or Section 338, knowing it to be forged and intending to use it as genuine), 340(2) (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to the FIR, Mahendra Chande, the chief executive officer of Ferani Hotels Private Limited and its group companies, complained to the police that the accused persons had allegedly forged documents and submitted them to the court in 2010 in a commercial matter against them.

“We are still verifying the complaint and will be able to comment on the matter only after scrutinising the bulky documents involved in the case,” a police officer from Bangur Nagar police station was quoted as saying by the outlet.

Despite text and WhatsApp messages, Wadia’s son Ness Wadia remained unavailable for comment, it added.

  • Iranian President hails Pak-Saudi defence pact as step towards regional security

Iranian President hails Pak-Saudi defence pact as step towards regional security

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday praised the landmark mutual defence deal signed between Pakistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) describing it as a step towards regional security.

Islamabad and Riyadh entered into the mutual defence agreement last week, under which “any aggression against one state will be considered an attack on both”. The pact was signed by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman at the Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh.

The pact was signed days after the Israeli attack on Qatar’s capital Doha and months after Pakistan shot down six Indian fighter jets, including three French-made Rafales, in the May 6-7 conflict that erupted after the April 22 Pahalgam incident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

“Iran welcomes the defensive pact between the two brotherly Muslim countries, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, as a beginning for a comprehensive regional security system with the cooperation of the Muslim states of West Asia in the political security and defence domains,” said Pezeshkian, addressing the General Debate of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

‘We do not seek nuclear weapons’

Pezeshkian clarified that Iran has no intention of building nuclear weapons, just days before international sanctions could be reimposed on his country over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. “I hereby declare once more before this assembly that Iran has never sought and will never seek to build a nuclear bomb. We do not seek nuclear weapons,” Pezeshkian added.

On August 28, Britain, along with France and Germany, launched a 30-day process to reimpose UN sanctions, accusing Tehran of failing to abide by a 2015 deal with world powers aimed at preventing it from developing a nuclear weapon.

Pezeshkian criticised the move by European powers as “illegal”, saying it was made at “the behest of the United States of America”.

While the US, its European allies and Israel accuse Iran of using its nuclear programme as a veil for efforts to try to develop the capability to produce weapons, Tehran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes only.

  • ‘Officials left meeting when food was served’: CII clarifies alleged withholding tax ruling

‘Officials left meeting when food was served’: CII clarifies alleged withholding tax ruling

The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has retracted its statement declaring withholding tax on financial transactions “un-Islamic”, saying that council members “left the meeting when food was served and the staff thought that withholding tax was declared against Sharia.”

The CII made the decision  at its 243rd meeting on Wednesday, presided over by CII Chairman Allama Dr Muhammad Raghib Hussain Naeemi, the press release read, adding, “The council declared the withholding tax imposed on withdrawal or transfer of money as excessive and declared it un-Islamic.”

Speaking to a private media outlet later on the same day, the CII chairman claimed that the note-taking staff misunderstood that withholding tax had been declared un-Islamic, noting that the CII would discuss matters related to withholding tax in its next meeting.

“Several members of the council were against the withholding tax,” Dr Naeemi added.

“Regarding today’s meeting of the CII, there was an impression that the council had formed a final opinion on the withholding tax, whereas in fact, a few members had an initial discussion on it, in which the members had different opinions. The members said that they would consult experts on this in the next meeting,” read a clarification issued by the CII.

It further read, “Therefore, it was decided that in the upcoming meeting of the council, it should be discussed in detail and the opinions of the relevant experts should be sought. The council did not take any decision on the issue under discussion.”

It merits a mention that the Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) describes “withholding tax” as an advance payment of tax deducted at the time of economic activities specified under certain sections of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 and Sales Tax Act, 1990.

Regarding the establishment of human milk banks in the country, the CII stated that such storage facilities can be formed under certain conditions, adding that necessary legislation on the matter must come first to prevent evil.

In June 2024, Pakistan’s first Human Milk Bank and Early Childhood Centre was established at the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN) in Karachi.

The initiative, however, was suspended just weeks later after the issuance of a fatwa (Islamic decree).
