    England’s James Anderson awarded Knighthood

Former England fast bowler James Anderson has been awarded knighthood in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Resignation Honours List.

The 42-year-old cricketing legend retired from Test cricket in July 2024. With 704 wickets, Anderson is the most successful fast bowler in the history of Test cricket. Only two spinners, Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708), have taken more Test wickets than him.

Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Richard Thompson, congratulated Anderson, saying, “Many congratulations to Sir Jimmy Anderson. This honour is thoroughly deserved for an English legend. His skill, dedication, and sportsmanship have inspired cricketers and fans across England and around the world.”

The ECB also celebrated the recognition on social media, posting, “Sir Jimmy Anderson – it suits you well.”

The Resignation Honours List is a British tradition in which outgoing Prime Ministers nominate individuals for various honours.

James Anderson made his ODI debut against Australia in December 2002 and began his Test career in May 2003. Over his international career, he played 188 Test matches and 194 One Day Internationals, leaving a remarkable legacy in world cricket.

  • Colin Munro makes PSL history

    Colin Munro makes PSL history

Islamabad United’s top-order batter Colin Munro created a new record in the opening match of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10.

On Friday, defending champions Islamabad United defeated Lahore Qalandars by eight wickets in the tournament’s inaugural match.

Played at the Rawalpindi Stadium, Islamabad chased down Lahore’s target of 140 runs in the 18th over.

Aggressive left-handed batter Colin Munro played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 59 runs off just 42 balls, playing a vital role in United’s comfortable victory.

With this fifty, Munro broke the record of former Quetta Gladiators captain Rilee Rossouw to become the foreign player with the most fifties in PSL history.

The half-century against Lahore was Munro’s 13th in the PSL, surpassing Rossouw’s record of 12 fifties.

Other overseas players with notable 50-plus scores in PSL history include Luke Ronchi, Jason Roy, and Shane Watson.

However, the record for the most 50-plus scores in overall PSL history is held by Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam, who has scored 35 fifties so far.

‘Not ashamed that I can’t speak English’: Rizwan responds to critics

Pakistan’s ODI team and Multan Sultans captain, Mohammad Rizwan, has said that he doesn’t know English and regrets not completing his education, but he is not ashamed of the fact that he cannot speak English despite being the captain of Pakistan.

Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, Rizwan addressed several topics, including the Pakistan Super League. He stated, “I am proud that whatever I say, I say it from the heart.”

He added, “I can’t speak English. I only regret that I couldn’t pursue higher education, but I am not ashamed that I’m Pakistan’s captain and I can’t speak English.”

The Multan Sultans skipper emphasised that his primary job is to play cricket, not to speak English. “The demand from me is to play cricket, not to speak English.”

He further said, “My Pakistan expects cricket from me, not English. If it needed English, I’d become a professor and come back after learning it.”

Rizwan also commented on the perception of his language skills, saying, “Most of the time, I feel I can speak enough English to explain myself to a foreigner.” He added that he is able to communicate with an English-speaking person -perhaps even “confuse” them a bit – but emphasised, “He won’t have any issue with my English; only those who want to stay upset with me will have a problem.”

The national team captain addressed critics, urging them to be constructive, saying, “Criticise the Pakistan team, but also help improve it. Tell us how to do better.”

He continued, “It’s painful when someone only criticises without offering any solutions. Recently, in the Champions Trophy match, Wasim Akram gave some valuable advice. I wanted to talk more with him, but there wasn’t enough time.”

“If someone criticises and teaches us something, it’s a good thing. But it hurts when people just criticise without explaining. Tomorrow, when we become seniors, if we only criticise, then juniors will also have every right to be upset with us,” he said.

Answering a question, Rizwan said, “Even the most successful people in the world were called crazy at first. Later, everyone follows them. Those who can’t tolerate criticism can never achieve anything.”

He also acknowledged the fans’ emotions and passion.

“It’s fair for fans to be upset. It’s their right because they love us. The Pakistan Super League has given a lot to Pakistan, and now it’s time for everyone to enjoy this league,” Rizwan said.

Islamabad United thrash Lahore in PSL 10 opener

Defending champions Islamabad United Friday kicked off their Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 campaign with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Lahore Qalandars, winning the opening match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Lahore Qalandars, after being put in to bat first, struggled to build momentum and were bowled out for 139 runs in 19.1 overs.

Opening batter Abdullah Shafique was the standout performer, scoring a resilient 66 off 38 balls, laced with six boundaries and three sixes.

Lahore’s innings got off to a disastrous start as Fakhar Zaman was dismissed for just one run in the second over, leaving the team under pressure at 4/1.  Shafique attempted to steady the innings, forming short-lived partnerships with Daryl Mitchell (13) and Sikandar Raza (23), but their dismissals derailed the Qalandars’ progress.

None of the remaining batters managed to reach double figures as Islamabad’s disciplined bowling attack tightened the screws.

Jason Holder was the pick of the bowlers for Islamabad United, delivering a match-winning spell of 4/26 in four overs. Skipper Shadab Khan also made a significant impact, claiming 3/26, while Imad Wasim, Naseem Shah and Riley Meredith chipped in with a wicket each.

Chasing a modest target of 140 runs, Islamabad United comfortably reached the finish line in 17.4 overs, losing just two wickets in the process.

Colin Munro led the charge with an unbeaten 59 off 42 balls while Agha Salman provided solid support with an unbeaten 41 off 34 balls. The duo stitched together an 80-run partnership, ensuring a smooth victory for Islamabad.

Earlier in the chase, Sahibzada Farhan contributed 25 runs off 24 balls, laying a steady foundation.

For Lahore Qalandars, Haris Rauf and Asif Afridi managed to pick up one wicket each but couldn’t prevent Islamabad from securing an easy win.

PSL10: Alex Carey unavailable for Islamabad United

Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey will not be available for Islamabad United in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10.

Carey is unable to participate in the tournament owing to his domestic cricket commitments in Australia.

Islamabad United had initially selected Carey as a partial replacement for South African batter Rassie van der Dussen. However, according to team management, van der Dussen is expected to join the squad soon.

Islamabad United will now have to adjust its plans as it aims for another successful PSL campaign without Carey’s presence on the squad.

  • Sarfaraz Ahmed hints at possible return to PSL

Sarfaraz Ahmed hints at possible return to PSL

Quetta Gladiators’ Director and former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has hinted at the possibility of making a comeback in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) if given the opportunity.

In an exclusive interview with a cricket website, Sarfaraz reflected on Quetta Gladiators’ previous season, stating that while the team performed well and qualified for the playoffs, they were unable to progress further. However, he believes that this season’s squad is stronger and has more firepower.

“Last year, our performance was good as we managed to qualify for the playoffs, but unfortunately, we couldn’t advance further. This season, the team is more balanced and has additional firepower,” he said.

He praised the recent performances of Finn Allen and Hassan Nawaz and highlighted the presence of Mark Chapman, Sean Abbott, and Faheem Ashraf in the squad.

“If you look at Chapman’s performance in New Zealand over the last two to three years, it has been excellent. He is also familiar with Pakistani conditions as he has toured here for the past three years,” Sarfaraz noted.

Speaking about his love for cricket, Sarfaraz admitted that it is difficult for someone who has played all his life to stay away from the game.

“Cricket is a passion that never fades. Someone who has played the sport for so long finds it challenging to stay away. Although I am currently serving as the team director for Quetta Gladiators, my heart still beats for cricket. If given the opportunity, I could be seen in PSL action once again,” he said.

Sarfaraz clarified that he has not yet retired from cricket and still aims to play for Pakistan.

“I haven’t announced my retirement yet. When a player is away from the game, it naturally feels disappointing. However, every cricketer has to step away at some point. Until that moment arrives, I want to play as much cricket as possible and perform at my best. When I feel the right time has come, I will announce my decision,” he added.

Regarding the criticism over receiving a high salary as a mentor from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Sarfaraz responded that judgments should be based on work and performance rather than personal opinions.

“I have always maintained that criticism should be directed at performance. People should evaluate a person based on their work rather than unnecessary speculation. Unfortunately, we tend to focus on the wrong aspects,” he concluded.

The former captain led Pakistan to two International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies during his career.

He is most famous for captaining Pakistan to win the Champions Trophy, but one of his victories often goes unnoticed: leading Pakistan’s junior team to the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2006, where they lifted the trophy. The opponent in that crucial match was India.

Pakistan won the ICC Champions Trophy for the second time under his leadership in 2017, claiming the title for the first time.

  • ‘If Warner hits us hard…’: Ali Tareen on Karachi clash

‘If Warner hits us hard…’: Ali Tareen on Karachi clash

As the highly anticipated PSL 10 kicks off today, Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has expressed concerns over the scheduling decisions made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

While discussing his team’s first match against Karachi Kings, Tareen acknowledged the potential impact of David Warner, stating: “If Warner plays and his travel is smooth, nothing will happen to us. But if Warner hits us hard, we are going to get cursed a lot online.”

The Sultans’ owner also voiced his frustration over the PCB’s decision to shift their opening home game to Karachi despite the tradition of starting the season in Multan.

“This time, they shifted our first home match to Karachi, even though it always starts in Multan. There, we engage with our sponsors, our team, and the people. And you see, Multan’s stadium is always full, so our fans are very engaged,” he said.

Tareen further pointed out that his team was denied the opportunity to conduct pre-season activities in Multan.

“We wanted to conduct our practice matches and activities there before shifting. But the PCB did not allow us that either,” he added.

“They told us that until PSL’s official security starts, we cannot bring in our overseas players and coaches. If you don’t allow us to bring people in, then you ask why we are not engaging,” Tareen said.

Despite the scheduling setbacks, Tareen remains optimistic about the tournament and is eager to see how his team performs.

“Karachi’s first match is against us, and it’s going to be a spicy fixture. So, I am looking forward to it, InshaAllah.”

While controversies continue to brew off the field, all eyes will be on David Warner and the Karachi Kings as they take on Multan Sultans in what promises to be an electrifying PSL 10 opener.
