Cristiano Ronaldo enhances security measures after threats in Saudi Arabia

Portugal’s star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez have made significant changes to their security arrangements in Saudi Arabia following threatening messages received on social media.

According to media reports, after receiving alarming messages, the Al-Nassr star and his partner decided to strengthen their security. They have replaced their former chief bodyguard and other security staff.

Additionally, they have reduced the online presence of their children and refrained from sharing personal family moments on social media. The Saudi police are also cooperating in their enhanced security measures.

A new chief security officer, Claudio Miguel Vez, has been appointed. He is known as an expert in high-risk protection in Portugal. Since joining Al-Nassr in 2023, Ronaldo and Georgina have been residing in Saudi Arabia, adapting to their new life with heightened security.

Moreover, Ronaldo has replaced his previous bodyguard, Claudio Vez, who has previously protected musicians and footballers residing in Portugal’s high-risk areas, including Rafael Leão and Gelson Martins.

Recently, during Paris Fashion Week, Georgina Rodriguez faced controversy when Vez used a powerful torch to prevent photographers from capturing her as she exited her vehicle. This act drew criticism on social media.

Shadab responds to nepotism allegations over national comeback

Pakistan’s T20 vice-captain, Shadab Khan, has addressed allegations that his return to the national team was facilitated by his relationship with former cricketer Saqlain Mushtaq, who is also his father-in-law.

In an interview with a cricket website, the all-rounder dismissed the claims, saying, “I have been playing for the national team for the past six to seven years and have performed well. It has only been two years since my marriage, yet my connection with Saqlain Mushtaq is repeatedly brought up, which is hurtful.”

Shadab further expressed his disappointment over the comments made by former cricketers.

“It hurts the most when our own former players say such things because they understand what a player goes through,” he said.

Addressing his performance and efforts behind the scenes, he remarked, “I have said before that a lot of work happens behind the scenes that people don’t see. But in our country, only results matter. We are working hard for them, and Saqlain Mushtaq is helping me improve my bowling.”

It is worth mentioning that Saqlain Mushtaq has been accused of lobbying for Shadab’s selection as vice-captain for the New Zealand tour, despite him not being initially included in the playing XI.

  • PSL: Salman Butt’s commentary gig leaves franchises unhappy

PSL: Salman Butt’s commentary gig leaves franchises unhappy

The inclusion of former Pakistan captain Salman Butt, who was convicted in a spot-fixing scandal, in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) commentary panel has sparked outrage among franchises.

In 2010, during a test played at Lord’s, Salman Butt, along with pacers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, was found guilty of spot-fixing, leading to their imprisonment in London. Following the completion of their bans, only Amir managed to make a comeback to the national team, while Asif relocated to the United States, and Butt is currently heading the Ghani Glass Institute of Cricket in Lahore.

According to reports, when PSL franchises learned about Salman Butt’s inclusion in the commentary panel, they collectively sent a letter to officials. Without mentioning any names, the letter urged authorities not to include any individual involved in unethical activities, fixing, or someone who has served jail time, as it could damage the league’s credibility.

However, PSL officials dismissed the concerns, and Butt’s name remained on the final commentary panel.

In response to the franchisees’ complaints, officials argued that Butt would only be doing Urdu commentary, meaning his involvement wouldn’t be widely noticed outside Pakistan.

Notably, Salman Butt recently conducted interviews with national cricketers for PCB Digital. Additionally, in late 2023, when chief selector Wahab Riaz appointed him as his advisor, he faced severe backlash, forcing an immediate reversal.

It is also worth mentioning that the organization Butt is currently associated with has a representative on the PCB Governing Board, raising further questions about his selection.

  • Faisalabad likely to host international cricket match after 17 years

Faisalabad likely to host international cricket match after 17 years

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly planning to host two T20I matches of the upcoming Pakistan-Bangladesh series in Faisalabad.

According to reports, the Bangladesh cricket team is scheduled to tour Pakistan in the third week of next month for a five-match T20I series.

The series is set to take place on May 25, 27, and 30 and June 1 and 3. Reports suggest that the first two matches could be played at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, marking the return of international cricket to the city after more than 16 years. The last international game hosted at this venue was on 11 April 2008, when Pakistan played an ODI against Bangladesh.

The remaining three matches are expected to be held in Lahore.

Initially, the series was planned to include three ODIs and three T20Is. However, after discussions between the PCB and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the format was revised to five T20Is as part of preparations for the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Historically, Pakistan and Bangladesh have faced each other 19 times in T20Is, with Pakistan winning 16 matches and Bangladesh securing victory on three occasions.

If the plan is finalised, Faisalabad will once again witness international cricket, adding excitement for local fans ahead of a highly anticipated series.

  • Arsenal stun Real Madrid by 3-0 in Champions League quarter-final

Arsenal stun Real Madrid by 3-0 in Champions League quarter-final

Arsenal delivered a sensational performance to secure a commanding 3-0 victory over Champions League holders Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Declan Rice was the star of the night, scoring two breathtaking free-kicks in the second half, putting the Gunners in a strong position to reach the semi-finals. Mikel Merino added a third goal before Eduardo Camavinga’s late red card compounded Real’s woes, leaving the Spanish giants in disarray.

Rice, who had never scored a free-kick in his career before this match, stunned even Real Madrid’s usually reliable goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, with his unstoppable strikes. His first goal, a sublime effort from 25 yards, curled around the wall and into the far corner, leaving the Emirates crowd in awe. The second, a thunderous shot from 20 yards, was another masterclass in precision and power.

Arsenal’s dominance was evident throughout, as they ruthlessly exposed Real Madrid’s defensive frailties. Mikel Arteta’s side will now head to the Bernabéu on 16 April with a firm advantage, knowing a semi-final clash against either Paris Saint-Germain or Aston Villa awaits them if they can maintain their lead.

This victory marks one of the most memorable nights in Arsenal’s storied history, bringing them within touching distance of their first Champions League semi-final appearance since 2009. Arteta had described this match as the “biggest night” of his career, urging his players to make history—and they rose to the challenge brilliantly.

Although Arsenal trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by 11 points, their European campaign now presents a genuine opportunity for Arteta to secure his first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2020. After last season’s quarter-final exit against Bayern Munich and their only previous final appearance ending in a 2006 defeat to Barcelona, this could be Arsenal’s best chance to claim European glory.

For Real Madrid, this result was a harsh reality check. The 15-time European champions have already suffered 10 defeats in all competitions this season and trail La Liga leaders Barcelona by four points. Their star-studded attack, featuring Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, and Vinícius Júnior, failed to trouble Arsenal’s disciplined defence.

Despite a promising start where Vinícius curled a shot wide, and Mbappé tested Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya, Real Madrid gradually lost their attacking rhythm. Arsenal, meanwhile, grew in confidence, with Rice’s powerful header from Jurrien Timber’s cross forcing a strong save from Courtois before Gabriel Martinelli’s rebound effort was also kept out.

As Arsenal’s intensity increased in the second half, Rice’s brilliance came to the fore. His first free-kick in the 58th minute left the stadium in awe, drawing comparisons to legendary set-piece takers. Arsenal nearly extended their lead moments later, with Courtois making a series of saves to deny Martinelli and Merino.

Rice’s second free-kick in the 70th minute was an even more spectacular strike, leaving Courtois helpless as it soared into the top corner. The Emirates erupted in celebration as fans chanted, “Declan Rice, we got him half price,” a nod to his £105 million transfer fee.

Arsenal sealed their dominant performance in the 75th minute when Merino calmly slotted home from 12 yards, turning the Emirates into a sea of red jubilation. Camavinga’s late dismissal for kicking the ball away only deepened Real Madrid’s misery.

As Arsenal prepare for the second leg, they carry the confidence of a team that has just outclassed one of Europe’s elite. With a place in the semi-finals within reach, Arteta’s men are on the verge of making history.

  • PCB responds to Ali Tareen’s PSL remarks

PCB responds to Ali Tareen’s PSL remarks

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Multan Sultans franchise have found themselves in a heated exchange ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

According to media reports, the PCB stated, “A franchise owner’s statements ahead of the PSL are an attempt to create controversy around the tournament. The PSL Code of Conduct grants us the authority to take disciplinary action against franchise owners, but doing so at this stage could damage the league.”

A senior PCB official added, “If anyone has complaints, they should reach out to us. Unfortunately, the person making these complaints does not even attend meetings. If he were present, these issues wouldn’t arise. The PCB does not wish to engage in this dispute. Our decisions to elevate the league are transparent.”

He further said, “We do not want to boast about our achievements, but for the first time, PSL commentary will be available in Urdu. We’ve also introduced advanced umpiring technology and made several other improvements. There is another league happening in our neighbouring country, and taking strict action at this time could harm the PSL’s reputation.”

Commenting on the recent controversy surrounding Ali Zafar’s inclusion in the PSL anthem, the official remarked, “As soon as Ali Zafar’s name was mentioned, statements were made without even waiting for the announcement of the remaining three names. The court has already dismissed the case against Ali Zafar, yet it was made controversial again.

    Ali Tareen’s Concerns and Criticism

Ali Tareen, the youngest PSL franchise owner, has raised serious questions about the PCB’s league management, expressing his frustration.

He said, “We keep hearing that this is the biggest and best PSL ever. I am tired of these repeated claims. The current PSL management lacks seriousness. We, as team owners, have no long-term control over our teams. Before adding new teams, there needs to be a clear policy. Otherwise, the league’s future will be at risk. The same six teams and four stadiums continue to host matches. Even last year, the final was decided on the last ball. I am not trying to disrespect anyone, but if they have a plan to expand the PSL, I would like to know about it.”

Ali Tareen also questioned the PCB’s approach to innovation. “It is disappointing to see how our most successful brand is being handled. Tell us what new things are being introduced this year compared to previous seasons. How is the PSL going to be bigger and more historic? At least make an effort, like the Big Bash League, which has made the game more exciting and attractive. The Big Bash introduced a four-over powerplay at the start, with the remaining two overs of the powerplay available for teams to take at any point. If there is no intention to introduce innovations, please stop making false claims.”

Ali Tareen also criticised the current franchise model of the PSL, stating, “All franchises are currently operating on a ‘rental model’, where team owners do not have actual ownership rights. Every year, franchise owners pay a fee to retain their teams, but they do not own them. Unlike the Indian Premier League (IPL), we do not have opportunities for foreign investment.”

Furthermore, he raised concerns about the league’s expansion plans. “The PCB has yet to present a clear plan for expanding to eight teams for the 11th edition of the PSL. Similarly, if revenue-sharing issues arise, it will create an awkward situation. IPL team owners can sell their teams to anyone, with the board only assessing financial capability and management plans. We, however, do not even have that option,” Ali said.

With PSL 2024 just around the corner, this public disagreement between the PCB and one of its franchise owners raises questions about the governance and long-term vision of the league. While the PSL continues to grow, the concerns highlighted by Ali Tareen suggest that significant structural and policy changes may be needed to ensure its sustainable success.

VIDEO: Travis Head refuses selfie with Indian fans

Australian opener Travis Head, who is currently playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has gone viral on social media after a video surfaced online, showing him shopping in a store.

In the video, fans can be seen insisting on taking pictures with Head, but he refuses. The person recording the video commented, “People in Hyderabad love you. At least, you should respond to them.” However, the cricketer walked away without saying anything.

The video has sparked mixed reactions online. While some criticized Head for ignoring fans, many defended him, arguing that players deserve privacy.

One user wrote, “Sunrisers Hyderabad fans are harassing Travis Head. They should be ashamed. They think every foreign player should be like David Warner, who always flatters India.”

Another user on X remarked, “Indians do not respect other people’s privacy.”

One comment took a dig at Indian fans, stating, “This is why Virat Kohli is leaving India.”

Many users defended Head, stating that he politely declined the request for pictures. “People think that just because they are fans, celebrities owe them something,” one comment read.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad have struggled in IPL 2025. After finishing as runners-up last season, they currently sit at the bottom of the table with just two points. The team has suffered consecutive defeats against Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

  • Virat Kohli creates history with T20 milestone

Virat Kohli creates history with T20 milestone

Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has once again etched his name in the history books.

Kohli became the first Indian batter to score 13,000 runs in T20 cricket. He achieved this feat in his 386th T20 innings, making him the second-fastest player in the world to reach this landmark.

During a match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Kohli’s team, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), secured a crucial victory against the Mumbai Indians. With this win, RCB moved up to third place on the points table.

Batting first, RCB posted a formidable total of 221/5, with Kohli playing a brilliant knock of 67 runs. However, the highlight of the match was Kohli reaching a remarkable milestone in T20 cricket.

West Indian legend Chris Gayle remains the fastest, having crossed the 13,000-run mark in his 381st T20 innings.

Fastest Batters to Reach 13,000 T20 Runs (By Innings)

Chris Gayle (West Indies) – 381 innings

Virat Kohli (India) – 386 innings

Alex Hales (England) – 474 innings

Shoaib Malik (Pakistan) – 487 innings

Kieron Pollard (West Indies) – 594 innings

To date, only five players in the history of T20 cricket have managed to surpass the 13,000-run mark.

  • Australian cricketing star, aged 27, announces immediate retirement

Australian cricketing star, aged 27, announces immediate retirement

Former Australia Test opener Will Pucovski has announced that he is retiring from all kinds of cricket with immediate effect, citing his struggles with concussions.

The decision comes after a panel of experts recommended he retire from professional cricket after suffering a series of concussions throughout his career. Pucovski has been hit on the head multiple times during his playing days, with the most recent concussion occurring in March 2024.

During a Sheffield Shield match in March, Pucovski was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the helmet by a delivery. The injury ruled him out for the remainder of the Australian summer and led to his withdrawal from his contract with Leicestershire for the 2024 English summer, according to ICC reports.

The 27-year-old said on Tuesday morning on SEN’s Whateley program: “I wish I was coming in under better circumstances. I’m not going to be playing cricket again. It’s been a really difficult year, to put it as simply as possible. The simple message is, I won’t be playing at any level again.”

Reflecting on his career, he added, “After that century in Sydney (in my second last game), I thought from a personal point of view things were starting to click for me. I put a mountain of effort into getting things right off the field to be good on the field.”

Pucovski had been recommended to retire by a medical panel last year after repeated concussion incidents. He played 36 First-Class matches, scoring seven centuries and nine fifties, including a top score of 255 not out against South Australia in 2020.

His sole Test appearance came during the 2020/21 season against India, where he scored 62 and 10 in his two innings.

While retiring from playing, Pucovski is set to remain involved in cricket as the head coach of the Premier Cricket side Melbourne, the club where he made his First XI debut as a teenager in the 2014/15 summer. “It’s definitely something that I’m really passionate about. I’m going to be coaching the MCC (Melbourne Cricket Club) next year, which is really exciting. It’s always felt like a second home to me, and I’ve always felt the love and support from the MCC while playing at higher levels or playing for them,” Pucovski said.

He further expressed his enthusiasm for coaching, stating, “I’ve been around there since I was 11 or 12 with their junior academy and all the way through. Coaching is always something that I’ve always wanted to scratch that itch with. I’m really excited to give that a go and see where it takes me.”

Pucovski’s decision to retire marks the end of a promising career that was unfortunately cut short by injury, but he remains committed to contributing to the game in a new capacity as a coach.

  • Basit Ali calls for immediate resignation of selection committee

Basit Ali calls for immediate resignation of selection committee

Former Test cricketer Basit Ali has called for the immediate resignation of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selection committee.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the 54-year-old former cricketer demanded that the selection committee step down following Pakistan’s humiliating defeats during the New Zealand tour.

He said, “I think the selection committee, consisting of Aleem Dar, Aqib Javed, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, and Hassan Cheema, lacks the expertise to form a team. They should resign immediately.”

The former cricketer added, “The members of the selection committee don’t know how to prepare a team. Since the Champions Trophy, everything has been a flop show. Even a tomato seller asks why spinners weren’t included in the team for the Champions Trophy.”

Basit Ali also said, “Aqib Javed should resign as well. If these people stay for another four months, then we will lose the upcoming series against Bangladesh too.”

With the T20 World Cup scheduled for next year, Pakistan gave opportunities to younger players during the New Zealand tour, leaving out senior players like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

On the other hand, New Zealand also fielded young players due to the unavailability of their stars because of the IPL, and these youngsters defeated Pakistan 4-1 in the T20 series. In the One-Day series, Pakistan’s senior team, including Rizwan and Babar Azam, whitewashed a Kiwi side that was missing its senior players.

Earlier, former wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal had also called for PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi to resign following the national team’s continuous failures.
