  • Arshad Nadeem’s coach hits back at Athletics Federation over World Championship performance

Arshad Nadeem’s coach hits back at Athletics Federation over World Championship performance

Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem’s coach Salman Iqbal Butt has submitted his response to the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP), strongly defending his tenure and criticising the federation’s lack of support for the star athlete’s training.

AFP sought an explanation from Butt following Nadeem’s disappointing tenth-place finish at the recent World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

In his comprehensive reply, Butt reminded the AFP of his track record, stating the federation appointed him as coach and mentor for Arshad Nadeem in 2021. He highlighted Nadeem’s subsequent string of victories, including the historic gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Butt noted Nadeem’s success from 2022 to 2025, which includes four gold medals and one silver, arguing that one cannot expect any athlete to maintain peak form consistently.

The coach affirmed his commitment to his role, saying he will continue coaching as long as Arshad Nadeem desires him to do so. He also stated that he and Nadeem never refused to share any training details with the AFP.

However, Butt also expressed disappointment, claiming that the AFP had disengaged from all of Arshad’s activities over the past year. He revealed that a personal friend funded Nadeem’s training, including two trips to South Africa for training sessions.

Butt condemned the mockery he faced after the World Championship and Olympic victories, stating television programs referred to him as merely a “coordinator.” He contrasted this with the immediate shift in attitude following Nadeem’s single poor performance, where he suddenly became the ‘coach’ held solely accountable.

Addressing the performance in Tokyo directly, Butt detailed Nadeem’s preparation for the 2025 season, which started on December 10, with continuous consultation with renowned coach Terseus Liebenberg. He noted that Dr. Ali Sher Bajwa, an expert in sports injuries, frequently checked on Nadeem, visiting Pakistan three times, while Dr. Asad Abbas managed his full diet plan.

Butt disclosed that Nadeem suffered an injury on July 4, requiring surgery in England. The athlete then underwent a three-week rehabilitation program in London.

Upon arriving in Tokyo on September 8, the coach explained, the hot and humid weather, coupled with a hard javelin runway track, made Nadeem uncomfortable and aggravated the pain in his leg. He stated that despite Dr. Bajwa’s efforts to keep him fit, a calf muscle strain prevented Nadeem from achieving his best score in the final.

Concluding his reply, Butt emphasised that just as success receives collective credit, responsibility for failure must also fall upon all stakeholders.

AFP had sought a detailed explanation from coach Salman Iqbal Butt following Olympian Arshad Nadeem’s disappointing performance at the recent World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where he finished 10th in the javelin throw final.

The federation issued a show cause notice to Butt, requiring him to submit a written report by October 5. The AFP instructed the coach to clarify 10 distinct matters within his report, directly addressing the fallout from the World Championship.

Arshad Nadeem, the reigning Olympic Champion with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters in Paris 2024, struggled in the final with a best throw of 82.75 meters, resulting in his elimination after the fourth round.

Asad Ali Memon achieves very rare milestone

Pakistani mountaineer Asad Ali Memon has made history by completing the prestigious Seven Summits Challenge after successfully scaling Puncak Jaya, the highest peak in Oceania.

The Seven Summits Challenge includes climbing the tallest mountains on each of the seven continents. With his latest ascent of Puncak Jaya in Indonesia, Asad has completed all seven, becoming only the third Pakistani to achieve this feat after Samina Baig and Mirza Ali Baig.

The 27-year-old began his mountaineering journey in 2019 with Mount Elbrus in Europe and has since conquered Mount Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Denali, Mount Everest, and Mount Vinson before his final climb in Indonesia.

Indonesia denies visas to Israeli gymnasts in protest against Gaza genocide

Indonesia has refused to issue visas to Israeli gymnasts as a protest against the genocide in Gaza.

According to media reports, the decision came in response to Israel’s continued attacks on Gaza. As a result, the Israeli athletes will not participate in the upcoming Gymnastics Championship in Indonesia.

Eta Yuliati, the head of the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation, told reporters that the Israeli gymnasts’ participation in the event had been officially cancelled.

So far, there has been no official response from the Israel Gymnastics Federation regarding Indonesia’s decision. The championship is scheduled to take place in Indonesia from October 19 to 25.

The visa denial follows just days after Israel and Hamas agreed to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire under former President Donald Trump’s new peace plan.

The agreement, which includes the release of hostages and withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, marks the first phase of a broader roadmap aimed at restoring stability in the region.

Indonesia, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, has no diplomatic relations with Israel and has consistently voiced opposition to its actions in Gaza.

  • ICC to use AI for pitch reporting via Google Gemini

ICC to use AI for pitch reporting via Google Gemini

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has officially made its way into the world of cricket, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has begun using advanced AI technology for pitch reporting.

Before the tenth match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup on Thursday, former India captain Mithali Raj presented the pitch report with the help of Google’s Gemini AI tool.

Using the Gemini Live feature on her phone, Mithali showed the pitch through her camera and asked the AI: “We are at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam for a One Day International. The weather is hot and humid. What do you think about this pitch?”

Gemini analyzed the visuals and responded that the pitch looked smooth and suitable for batting, with little grass. It added that due to the hot and humid conditions, the ball might not swing much, making a high-scoring match likely.

Mithali Raj agreed with Gemini’s assessment, saying it indeed appeared to be a good batting pitch and fans could expect a match full of runs.

  • Same team for T20I World Cup 2026? Mike Hesson’s terms before becoming Pakistan’s white-ball coach revealed

Same team for T20I World Cup 2026? Mike Hesson’s terms before becoming Pakistan’s white-ball coach revealed

Mike Hesson set clear conditions before accepting the role of Pakistan’s white-ball head coach.

Speaking to a private news channel, senior sports analyst Abdul Majid Bhatti said Hesson told the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that he would work only on his own terms.

Hesson made it clear that he does not believe in changing players after every one or two series. He also insisted that he would choose his own captain and team management.

He asked PCB to keep the same captain and team combination until the T20 World Cup next year, and the Board agreed.

In recent days, social media was rife with unverified reports about Salman Ali Agha losing his captaincy and Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan returning to the T20 team.

Abdul Majid Bhatti rejected the rumors, saying the selection committee, head coach, and captain plan to continue with the same combination until the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan’s performance in the recent T20 Asia Cup 2025 added pressure on the team’s batting lineup, especially the middle order. In the final against India at the Dubai International Stadium, Pakistan seemed in control after a strong 84-run opening stand between Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman. But once the openers fell, the middle order collapsed dramatically, losing nine wickets for just 33 runs. From 113 for 1, Pakistan were bowled out for 146 in 19.1 overs, handing India a comfortable victory.

The defeat sparked widespread criticism from fans and former cricketers. Many questioned the team’s inability to handle pressure in crucial moments and the lack of stability in the middle order.

Virender Sehwag said Pakistan “destroyed themselves” despite a solid start, while Shoaib Akhtar slammed the team management for failing to fix the middle-order issues before the tournament.

Captain Salman Ali Agha admitted after the match that poor shot selection and the inability to rotate strike led to their downfall in the final.

The Asia Cup loss has put the spotlight back on Pakistan’s batting structure, making Hesson’s demand for consistency in selection even more significant as the team builds toward the T20 World Cup 2026.

Both teams will hold training sessions this afternoon at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

Interim head coach Azhar Mahmood is reportedly impressed with spinner Asif Afridi’s performance in the nets and is in favor of handing him a Test debut.

As per reports, the names under consideration for the playing XI include Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, and Babar Azam. South Africa suffers setback ahead of Pakistan series

South African fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been ruled out of the upcoming white-ball series against Pakistan and the lone T20I against Namibia due to a hamstring injury.

Cricket South Africa confirmed that Maphaka sustained the injury during a four-day domestic match last week. The left-arm pacer bowled 5.5 overs in the first innings before leaving the field after feeling discomfort in his hamstring.

Initial scans suggested a minor issue, but further medical tests revealed a Grade 1 to 2 hamstring strain. According to Cricket South Africa, Maphaka will undergo a four-week rehabilitation program.

Ottniel Baartman has been named as Maphaka’s replacement for the T20I against Namibia on October 11 and the three-match T20I series against Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Lizaad Williams, who was already part of the T20 squad, has also been added to the ODI squad for the Pakistan series.

South Africa’s tour of Pakistan begins on October 12 with a two-match Test series, followed by three T20Is starting on October 28 and a three-match ODI series running until November 8.

  • ‘Disrespect’: Former cricketer bashes Gautam Gambhir, others for pushing Kohli, Rohit into retirement

‘Disrespect’: Former cricketer bashes Gautam Gambhir, others for pushing Kohli, Rohit into retirement

Former Indian batter Manoj Tiwary has said that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could soon retire from international cricket, saying the two legends had been treated with disrespect despite their immense contributions to Indian cricket.

Speaking to an Indian cricketing website, Tiwary said that the recent decisions made by the Indian team management, including the appointment of Shubman Gill as ODI and Test captain, had left the senior players feeling unwanted.

“Why would Virat have left Test cricket? He had already started preparing for the England series. But the environment made him feel unwanted. When a player feels he is not needed or respected, a player with self-respect will never continue,” he said.

Tiwary added that Rohit might also consider walking away if the situation persists. “If things continue this way, I think there’s a possibility that Rohit might also take that step, not because he wants to, but because no great player should be made to stay where he feels disrespected.”

The former cricketer also questioned the timing of Gill’s promotion as captain. “They clearly want one captain across all formats. But why now? Rohit was already winning matches and leading the team well. After what both Virat and Rohit have done for Indian cricket, treating them like this is nothing short of disrespectful,” he added.

Kohli retired from T20Is after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph and from Test cricket in September 2025. Rohit, on the other hand, retired from T20Is after the same tournament in 2024, but continues to play ODI cricket.

  • PHF clears pending dues of players, officials

PHF clears pending dues of players, officials

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has cleared all outstanding dues of players and officials, addressing one of its long-standing financial issues.

According to PHF President Tariq Bugti, payments for senior, junior, and under-18 teams have been finalised.

He confirmed that daily allowances and other payments have been settled, with special attention given to the junior team preparing for the Sultan Johor Cup in Malaysia.

The federation stated that payments were made through Habib Bank Limited (HBL). Players with HBL accounts have already received their funds, while those using other banks may face brief delays due to inter-bank processes.

This step comes as the PHF looks to restore players’ trust and strengthen the organization ahead of a busy international schedule.

The junior team is currently in camp and will soon depart for Malaysia to participate in the Sultan Johor Cup.

  • Pakistan’s Ihsanullah challenges India’s Abhishek Sharma

Pakistan’s Ihsanullah challenges India’s Abhishek Sharma

Pakistani right-arm pacer Ihsanullah has issued a bold challenge to India’s in-form opener Abhishek Sharma, claiming he could dismiss the left-hander within just three balls.

The 22-year-old fast bowler expressed confidence in his ability to trouble the Indian batter, saying, “Abhishek Sharma has not played in front of me. He will not survive for more than six deliveries. I will dismiss him within three balls of my over.”

Ihsanullah made his T20I debut for Pakistan on March 24, 2023, against Afghanistan, while his only ODI appearance came against New Zealand in April the same year.

Since then, he has featured in four T20I matches and one ODI but has yet to make a comeback to the national side in the last two years. With Pakistan’s busy international calendar ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 and ODI World Cup 2027, Ihsanullah appears eager to impress selectors for a return to the team.

Abhishek Sharma has been in sensational form for India. The left-handed opener dominated Asia Cup 2025, scoring over 300 runs in the tournament.

Within a year of his T20I debut, Abhishek climbed to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings and broke Dawid Malan’s record for the highest-ever rating points in the format, reaching 926.

Despite his remarkable form, Abhishek has been left out of India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, with Yashasvi Jaiswal getting the nod instead.

However, he will return to action in the T20I series, where he is expected to open alongside Shubman Gill. The series will also mark Abhishek’s debut on Australian soil, where he will be tested against pace and bounce.
