Visa-free entry in Pakistan for Bangladeshi citizens? No, not quite

Geo Fact Check has debunked social media posts that claimed that Bangladeshi citizens have been granted visa-free entry to Pakistan after Sheikh Hasina’s government was toppled.

Geo reported that officials from the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confirmed that Bangladeshi citizens could not enter Pakistan visa-free.

The Interior Ministry’s Director General of Media, Qadir Yar Tiwana, clarified that Minister of Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has announced a new visa policy for many countries.

The revised policy states that only citizens of Gulf countries will be granted visa-free entry and will require only a passport to arrive at Pakistan.

Tiwana said, “Bangladeshi citizens will now need to apply for a visa on arrival and will receive an electronic visa within 24 hours.”

Traders observe nationwide strike but social media has no patience for them

Traders across the country are observing a nationwide strike on August 28 to protest against the government’s tax reforms.

Many political parties, including Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), and the Awami National Party (ANP), are supporting the traders’ strike.

Traders’ representatives visited the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) headquarters to express their reservations about the Tajir Dost Scheme, the government’s initiative to bring retailers and traders into the tax net.

FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood told Dawn that the FBR will not withdraw the Tajir Dost Scheme; however, it was willing to resolve the “legitimate issues” the traders may be facing.

According to the Chairman, the retail sector contributes around 20 percent to the GDP, yet it remains largely untaxed.

Social media had no patience for the traders.

One social media user posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the retail sector pays less than Rs20 billion income tax annually while the salaried class pays more than Rs300 billion annually.

Similarly, another netizen took to X to condemn the political parties supporting the traders’ strike because they will be supporting “one of biggest chor sector of retail and wholesale in Pakistan.”

  • Oasis announce 2025 worldwide reunion tour kicking off in UK

Oasis announce 2025 worldwide reunion tour kicking off in UK

British rock legends Oasis announced Tuesday they will reunite for a worldwide tour, as brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher ended an infamous 15-year feud.

The band behind hit songs including “Wonderwall”, “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and “Champagne Supernova”, will play an initial 14 gigs next year in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and the Irish capital, Dublin, starting in July.

Oasis also plan to play in “continents outside of Europe later next year,” according to a statement posted on their website.

Formed in Manchester, northwest England, in 1991 and credited with helping create the Britpop era of that decade, Oasis’ reunion tour will be the Gallagher brothers’ first performances since 2009 after they fell out.

“The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised,” Oasis said, as it announced the reunion alongside the first details of the tour.

The announcement capped days of hints and heightened speculation the band was set to play again.

However, there was no announcement regarding the release of any new music, while Oasis will reportedly not play next year’s Glastonbury festival despite widespread speculation.

“Oasis today end years of feverish speculation with the confirmation of a long-awaited run of UK and Ireland shows forming the domestic leg of their Oasis Live ’25 world tour,” the online statement added.

    – ‘Hottest tickets’ –

The tour will begin over two nights at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital Cardiff from July 4, 2025, followed a week later by four gigs at Heaton Park in their hometown, Manchester.

Oasis will then play London’s Wembley Stadium — on July 25 and 26 as well as August 2 and 3 — before taking to the stage over two nights at Murrayfield Stadium in the Scottish capital Edinburgh.

The UK and Ireland gigs will conclude with two performances at Dublin’s Croke Park in mid-August.

“Their only shows in Europe next year, this will be one of the biggest live moments and hottest tickets of the decade,” the statement said.

A press release said there had been “no great revelatory moment that has ignited the reunion — just the gradual realisation that the time is right”.

It promised “a set full of wall-to-wall classics,” hailing the “charisma, spark and intensity that only comes when Liam and Noel Gallagher are on-stage together”.

Tickets for the UK dates will go on sale from 9:00 am (0800 GMT) on Saturday, with Dublin tickets available from 8am (0700 GMT) the same day.

Social media was abuzz with the news, with the band’s post racking up hundreds of thousands of likes and fans sharing their excitement.

Manchester teaching assistant Michelle Locke, 45, told AFP she was “well excited” after hearing the “great news”.

“We’ll be up early… trying to get tickets,” she said, posing in front of a mural to the Gallaghers in south Manchester.

    – ‘Best news’ –

In Camden, the north London neighbourhood famous for live music and where Oasis were fixtures in the mid-’90s, others were equally enthused.

“It’s the best news in the world… it’s what we need!” said Pauline Weir, 50, manager of the Modfather clothing store.

Oasis has long been synonymous with Britpop music, when it enjoyed a fierce rivalry with London band Blur, co-founded by Damon Albarn.

The Manchester outfit was also notorious for public fights between Liam and Noel.

The sibling tensions came to a head during a spat at a 2009 Paris festival, when Liam broke one of Noel’s guitars.

The brothers have not played together since — but both have still regularly played the band’s hits to sold-out crowds.

Until now, they had largely communicated in public through taking swipes at each other on social media.

The brothers have teased at a reconciliation before, with Noel last year saying “never say never”.

The hints became firmer more recently, with social media accounts for the brothers and Oasis all trailing Tuesday’s much-anticipated announcement.

The now-confirmed reunion will take place 30 years after Oasis’s 1995 album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”, which received international critical and commercial acclaim.

Meanwhile, tracks from the first recording session for its debut album “Definitely Maybe”, released a year earlier, will be put out Friday — a day after its 30th birthday — Britain’s Press Association (PA) news agency said.

  • Pakistan will ‘definitely invite’ Modi to SCO summit, confirms Khawaja Asif

Pakistan will ‘definitely invite’ Modi to SCO summit, confirms Khawaja Asif

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said on August 27 that Pakistan will invite Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Islamabad.

Commenting on the invitation to the Indian Premier, the Defence Minister said, “Yes, certainly there should be no doubt about it.”

Asif said that the host country has no right to choose which country’s head of state to invite, and SCO does not allow such moves.

He said, “Ministry External Affairs (MEA) hasn’t commented on Indian media speculation of Modi refusing to attend the regional summit.”

The SCO is a strategic partner of the United Nations (UN) on political affairs, peace, and security issues.

Commenting on Iran’s final notice to Pakistan on the gas pipeline delay project, Asif remarked, “The project should be completed; it suits Pakistan economically.”

“Iran is our neighbour country, and if we need oil, gas or other mineral resources, then the neighbourly countries are economically beneficial,” he concluded

  • Lahore will now have most number of tehsils

Lahore will now have most number of tehsils

The Government of Punjab has decided to establish five new tehsils in the provincial capital, Lahore.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the new tehsils, after which the Board of Revenue issued a notification.

The new tehsils include Nishtar, Wagah, Iqbal Town, Ravi and Sadar, while the existing five tehsils include Raiwind, Model Town, Lahore Cantt, Lahore City and Shalimar.

With the new tehsils, the total number of tehsils in Lahore has increased to 10. Five assistant commissioners have been assigned to the Commissioner Lahore for the newer tehsils.

Notably, this decision has made Lahore the largest city in the Punjab province in terms of tehsils. The decision has also shelved the plans to divide the city into two or three districts.

Allama Iqbal tehsil will now include the revenue circles of Chuhng, Niaz Baig, and Pandoki.

Nishtar tehsil will encompass Kahna and Kamahan circles.

Saddar tehsil will cover Barki, Heir, and Jahman, while Wagah tehsil will comprise Jallo, Bhaseen, and Lakhudair. Ravi tehsil will be formed with Shahdra, Naulakha, and Lahore Khas circles.

Following the creation of these new tehsils, the existing tehsils will be adjusted as follows: Raiwind will include Raiwind, Paji, Manga, and Maraka; Model Town will include Ichhra and Model Town; Cantt will include Lahore Cantt and Bhangali; Shalimar will include Baghbanpura and Fatehgarh; and City will include Sanda and Nawankot.

“It was the need of the hour since the existing tehsils were already overburdened,” said an official stressing that the creation of new tehsils would enhance service delivery for public.

  • Eight stabbed, hundreds arrested at London’s Notting Hill Carnival

Eight stabbed, hundreds arrested at London’s Notting Hill Carnival

Eight people were stabbed, and police arrested hundreds during last weekend’s Notting Hill Carnival, one of the world’s largest street festivals held annually in west London.

Updating on their policing operation late Monday, the capital’s Metropolitan Police said five people were stabbed on the final day of the world-renowned three-day celebration of British Afro-Caribbean identity.

That followed three knifings on Sunday, with three of the victims of the violence over the long weekend left in a life-threatening condition, the force said.

On Monday, officers made at least 230 arrests, including 49 for possession of an offensive weapon, in addition to scores of arrests the previous day.

Three firearms were seized, and 35 officers were also injured during the event, which attracts around a million people annually over the August bank holiday weekend.

The policing numbers were similar to last year, with ten stabbings and around 300 arrests

Hundreds of thousands of revellers packed the streets of west London for the carnival, filling the Notting Hill neighbourhood and surrounding districts with colour, costumes, dancing and music.

Around 7,000 officers were on duty for the event, which has repeatedly been marred by violence, in particular knife crime, but is enjoyed by the vast majority incident-free.

However, the Met’s deputy assistant commissioner, Ade Adelekan, said he was “tired of saying the same words every year” after a woman attending the carnival with her child was among those stabbed.

“We only very narrowly avoided a fatality,” he added, urging carnival-goers to report any crimes they witness.

The celebration of British Afro-Caribbean culture traces its roots back to the 1950s when the first surge in arrivals from former British colonies post-World War II occurred.

Feathered dancers, steel bands and earth-shaking sound systems feature in the vibrant yearly event.
