IMF flags $30-35 billion gaps in Pakistan’s import data, seeks review

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has told Pakistan to conduct a comprehensive review of its import data and statistical processes following the identification of discrepancies amounting to $30-35 billion in the country’s trade figures over the past seven years.

The most recent IMF staff report, published after the approval of a $1 billion tranche under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), highlighted the need to enhance Pakistan’s macroeconomic statistics.

As stated in the report, the inconsistencies in merchandise import data reported by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) have cast doubt on the reliability of official statistics, despite expectations that the balance of payments figures from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) will not be significantly impacted.

To continue receiving support from the EFF, the IMF has told Pakistan to assess the quality of its import data, reconsider the methods utilised for data collection and aggregation, and compile a comprehensive set of revised statistics along with explanations for public dissemination.

Approval from a technical committee will be necessary for these measures.

The government has committed to rectifying the discrepancies and enhancing the timeliness, quality and coverage of macroeconomic data. Recent initiatives include the release of the first Agricultural Census in 15 years, in addition to the Labor Force Survey and Household Integrated Economic Survey.

The PBS is set to roll out a new Producer Price Index (PPI) and will begin data collection for three key surveys in fiscal year 2026, including the census of manufacturing industries, the survey of small and household manufacturing industries and the family budget survey.

In accordance with the Government Finance Statistics (GFS) roadmap, Pakistan has formed a central GFS unit tasked with regularly collecting and classifying fiscal operations data.

The integration of GFS mappings will facilitate the generation of reports that comply with international standards once the system upgrades are finalised.

Cybercrime agency arrests eight for scamming people by impersonating relatives, friends

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has conducted a massive operation, arresting an eight-member group involved in financial scams in Islamabad’s Khanna Pul area.

According to a spokesperson for the NCCIA, the individuals would impersonate relatives or friends living abroad and deceive victims by claiming there was a medical emergency to extort funds.

An agency spokesperson said that the suspects were alleged to have used fake identities to defraud a citizen out of Rs1.5 million, which was subsequently transferred to the bank account of the main suspect.

They said that those arrested include Muhammad Salman, Mohsin Jamil, Nazakat Ali, Mehtab Ali, Muhammad Shah Nawaz, Nasir Ali, Abid Hussain and Fahad Jabbar.

Reports said that the suspects, originally from Bahawalpur, had also opened bank accounts in names of gullible individuals, retained the checkbooks and utilised said accounts for fraudulent activities.

Additionally, it was reported that the suspects had established bank accounts in Bahawalpur and surrounding areas. The scammers would travel to Islamabad to withdraw the stolen funds and were apprehended while attempting to withdraw money.

Cases have been registered against the accused, and action has been taken under various provisions, including the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).

  • Bondi attack: Australia mulls stronger gun laws, antisemitism measures

Bondi attack: Australia mulls stronger gun laws, antisemitism measures

Australian Prime Minister (PM) Anthony Albanese has committed to allocate “every single resource required” to tackle antisemitism in the country following the tragic shooting at Bondi Beach, where a father and son killed at least 16 individuals during a religious celebration by the Jewish community.

With law enforcement confirming that the weapons used in the shooting were licensed since 2015, the premier said that the federal government would contemplate stricter gun laws, including capping the number of firearms an individual can own, and conducting more frequent reviews of gun licenses.

Earlier, the 50-year-old father died on the spot while his 24-year-old son is in critical condition.

Media reports have identified the assailants as Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram, with law enforcement noting that one of the suspects had been previously known to them but was not viewed as an immediate threat.

Two Islamic State flags were also reportedly discovered from the attackers’ vehicle after the attack, which was characterized by PM Albanese as “pure evil” and a blatant act of antisemitism.

He vowed to foster national unity in response, saying, “The Jewish community is in pain today. All Australians embrace them and say, we stand with you. We will do whatever is necessary to eliminate antisemitism.”

This incident has amplified calls for action from political leaders and special envoys. Jillian Segal, the government’s special envoy for combating antisemitism, called for the expedited implementation of her July recommendations, stressing that merely denouncing hate is insufficient.

Her suggestions entail tighter regulations on antisemitic actions and protests, improved visa screening, and oversight of institutions that fail to address antisemitism.

Opposition members, including Liberal leader Sussan Ley and former treasurer Josh Frydenberg, criticised the government for inadequate measures. Ley stated that antisemitism “has been left to fester” and demanded immediate legislative reforms and increased security for Jewish community sites.

NSW Premier Chris Minns also denounced antisemitism and emphasised the need for both societal and legislative measures. He also confirmed that the state government was reviewing gun regulations after finding that one of the shooters held multiple firearms under existing licenses.

The Bondi shooting has elicited international outcry, including criticism from Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who accused the Australian government of not doing enough to combat antisemitism.

  • Prime suspect in Dr Warda murder case killed in ‘police encounter’

Prime suspect in Dr Warda murder case killed in ‘police encounter’

The primary suspect in the murder case of Abbottabad’s Dr Warda Mushtaq was killed in a police encounter, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police said.

According to the police, Shamrez was killed during a raid that came as he continued to evade arrest since the murder. Other suspects are already in police custody.

Per the details of the shootout, the suspect fired upon police when they approached him. He was shot dead as a result of retaliatory fire.

While his remains were taken to Ayub Medical Complex and access for media was limited, Abbottabad District Police Officer (DPO) Haroon Rasheed has revealed further details of the case.

He said that Dr Warda had entrusted 67 tolas of gold to her friend Rida for safekeeping two years ago. A conflict arose when Dr Warda sought the return of the gold, leading to her abduction and eventual murder.

“Dr Warda was killed on the same day she was abducted. The postmortem examination revealed that her neck bone was fractured, with strangulation and suffocation listed as the causes of death. Her body also exhibited clear signs of torture,” Rasheed said.

The police had earlier arrested Wahid, the spouse of one of the female suspects, and applied sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act against those in custody.

Dr Warda, who worked as a medical officer at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Abbottabad, went missing before her body was discovered on the night of December 4, based on information from her friend and accomplices.

Her father had filed a report at the Cantonment police station following her disappearance.

Investigators determined that on December 4, Rida contacted Dr Warda at the DHQ hospital and lured her to an under-construction house near Jadoon Plaza on Rehman Street.

Law enforcement analysed CCTV footage, call logs and interviewed over 35 individuals, which resulted in the arrests of Rida, Nadeem Zaib s/o Aurangzeb, and Pervez s/o Ayub.

During questioning, the suspects confessed to kidnapping and murdering Dr Warda besides burying her body in a pit in the Lari Banota forest. Pervez later directed investigators to the body.

  • Sydney gunman’s Pakistani namesake exposes Indian propaganda linking him to shooting

Sydney gunman’s Pakistani namesake exposes Indian propaganda linking him to shooting

A Pakistani namesake of the Bondi Beach gunman has become the victim of a coordinated misinformation campaign after Indian media outlets falsely linked him to the deadly attack that killed at least 15 people on Sunday.

The shooting took place during a Hanukkah gathering where assailants deliberately targeted the Jewish community. Law enforcement identified the suspects as a father and son, revealing that the father, 50, was killed at the scene, while his son, 24, remained in critical condition.

Authorities confirmed the son was born in Australia whereas the father, 50, had entered the country on student visa and later secured a partner visa. While police have not publicly disclosed the attackers’ country of origin or officially released the attackers’ names, local media identified one suspect as Naveed Akram.

The reports were followed by Indian and Israeli media outlets claiming the attacker had “links to Pakistan”, publishing fake images on social media.

Despite no official statement, some Indian reports went on to claim the suspect was a “Pakistani national from Lahore” or of “Pakistani-origin”.

The misinformation campaign ended up targeting an innocent Pakistani namesake of the attacker.

In a video on social media, Naveed Akram addressed the false reports.

“Today I’m going to talk about a very serious and terrible incident that has happened in Bondi Beach and so many people have been killed and I really condemn that attack. That should not have happened,” he said.

On claims regarding the identity of one of the shooters, Akram said some social media accounts had taken pictures from his Facebook account and linked him to the shooter.

“I’m going to clearly tell everyone that it is not me and I have nothing to do with that incident or with that person. That is a different person and I am completely outside of this matter.”

“This issue is very serious and I’m very stressed and scared about this and I cannot even go outside safely. I’m traumatized right now. Firstly, because something has happened over there. And secondly because my pictures have been shared by different accounts, which is putting my life at risk.”

“I just want everyone’s help to stop this propaganda. Please, if you see any posts that have my pictures, report that account and do not spread that thing because it can turn very dangerously against me,” he concluded.

  • Motive behind DSP’s double murder revealed

Motive behind DSP’s double murder revealed

Police have revealed the reason behind the double murder of a police officer, DSP Usman Haider’s wife and daughter in Lahore, stating that a property dispute was the reason for the pre-mediated murder.

According to the police, the conflict was related to a 10-marla plot. Investigators mentioned that DSP Usman Haider had two spouses and had acquired the plot under the name of his first wife. Police stated that the officer later sold the property and utilised the proceeds, sparking family disputes.

During the inquiry, the suspect informed the police that the money gained from the sale of the plot was spent on his brother’s wedding. Investigators noted that this decision increased disagreements among the officer and his first wife.

Police officials reported that DSP Usman Haider murdered his wife by stabbing her. They confirmed the recovery of the murder weapon as part of the investigation.

According to police, one body was recovered from the Kahna area, while the second was found in Sheikhupura.

The case came to light after the two were reported missing approximately one and a half months ago from the Burki area of Lahore.

Authorities indicated that DSP Muhammad Usman Haider Gujjar had initially contacted Burki police station and filed a First Information Report (FIR), claiming that his wife and daughter had been kidnapped.

Following the FIR registration, a police investigation was initiated to locate the missing individuals.

Investigators said suspicion arose after a delay in filing the missing persons report. The delay caused the police to do a deeper inquiry, which later led to the arrest of the officer and the identification of the motive behind the killings.
