Pakistan ranks shockingly low in tourism, report reveals

World Economic Forum (WEF) has released a ranking of countries in the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) where Pakistan’s ranking is surprisingly low.

Pakistan has been ranked 101 out of 119 countries, classified as a lower-middle-income economy and is part of the Asia-Pacific regional group.

The top 30 countries in the TTDI accounted for over 75 percent of the travel and tourism industry GDP in 2022, and 70 percent of GDP growth between 2020 and 2022.

However, the lower half of the list consisted of African countries.

    Ranking among South Asia

In South-East Asia, Pakistan ranks slightly above Nepal (105) and Bangladesh (109), but far below India (39) and Sri Lanka (76).

    Ranking among Middle Eastern Countries

Within the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates topped the rankings at 18, followed by Saudi Arabia (41), Qatar, (53) and Bahrain (18). The United States topped the overall list, followed by Spain, Japan, and France. The remainder of the top ten list comprised Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, Italy, and Switzerland.

WEF report highlighted challenges being faced within the industry. Global inflation, global conflict, and environmental issues such as wildfires in tourist destinations, have generated additional pressure.

However, the report predicts that in the coming years, the travel and tourism industry will bear the brunt of geopolitical tensions, macroeconomic uncertainty, and possible challenges brought on by artificial intelligence.

Whilst developing economies like Pakistan have shown improvement in TTDI scores, many areas still need investment in enabling tourism conditions.

  • Imran Khan’s X account being handled from USA, Rauf Hassan reveals

Imran Khan’s X account being handled from USA, Rauf Hassan reveals

PTI in confusion: Who is running Khan’s social media?

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Makhdoomzada Muhammad Zain Hussain Qureshi recently gave an interview to journalist Asma Shirazi on Hum News where he backtracked from his party’s recent narrative and clarified that Khan’s social media account is, indeed, not being operated from abroad.

Qureshi stated, “There is no such thing as [someone] from outside the country handling Khan’s social media but is being operated according to Imran Khan’s instructions and party policy.”

Zain clarified, “It is obvious that he [Imran Khan] can’t use his own account because he is imprisoned so the party has the responsibility and it is done on his instructions.”

Qureshi’s contrasting statement clashes with PTI leader Raoof Hasan’s claim that Imran Khan’s social media accounts were being handled from America.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson Rauf Hassan revealed on Thursday to Kashif Abbasi on ARY News, that PTI founder Imran Khan’s official X (formerly Twitter) account was being handled from abroad. The head of PTI’s official social media team is based in the USA, Hassan confirmed.

Rauf Hassan also stated that he will investigate who uploaded the video about former Bangladesh president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the PTI founder’s official X account. PTI workers shared the video from Khan’s account in their personnel capacity, Rauf Hassan added.

The PTI spokesperson also said that he didn’t even see the video.

The development came when the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) started an investigation into the circulation of the video.

However, sources in Adiala jail confirmed to Aaj News that the former prime minister refused to meet the FIA team in Adiala jail.

  • In historic first, Mexicans expected to elect woman president

In historic first, Mexicans expected to elect woman president

Millions of Mexicans are expected to vote for their first woman president in a landmark election Sunday, following a long and sometimes acrimonious race overshadowed by soaring political violence.

In a watershed for a country with a long history of gender discrimination, two women have dominated the contest to lead the world’s most populous Spanish-speaking country.

Addressing a cheering crowd of thousands at her closing campaign rally, ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico was going to “make history” this weekend.

“I say to the young women, to all the women of Mexico — colleagues, friends, sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers — you are not alone,” the 61-year-old said.

Her vow to champion women’s rights was music to the ears of Evelyn Trasvina.

“I’m very excited,” said the 42-year-old accountant from western Mexico.

“Many people have been lifted out of poverty and one of the promises is the recognition of women’s unpaid work,” she told AFP.

Sheinbaum, a former Mexico City mayor and a scientist by training, was leading her main opposition rival Xochitl Galvez, also 61, by around 17 points in opinion polls days before the election.

Nearly 100 million people are registered to vote in the country of 129 million, and 61-year-old housewife Rosa Maria Miranda said that criminal violence meant Galvez would get her support.

“We women are fed up. We’re afraid to go out into the streets,” she said.

The campaign season ended on a tragic note Wednesday when a gunman shot dead an aspiring mayor in the southern state of Guerrero.

The attack brought the number of local politicians who have been murdered to at least 24 during what has been a particularly violent electoral process, according to official figures.

Some non-governmental organizations have reported an even higher toll, including Data Civica, which has counted around 30 killings.

Sheinbaum has pledged to continue outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s controversial “hugs not bullets” strategy of tackling crime at its roots.

Galvez, meanwhile, promised a tougher approach to cartel-related violence.

“You will have the bravest president, a president who does confront crime,” the outspoken senator and businesswoman with Indigenous roots told her closing rally in the northern city of Monterrey.

She accused Lopez Obrador of implementing “a security strategy where hugs have been for criminals and bullets for citizens.”

Sheinbaum owes much of her popularity to Lopez Obrador, a close ally who has an approval rating of more than 60 percent but is only allowed to serve one term.

It is almost a year since the contest for the ruling party nomination got underway, with Sheinbaum crisscrossing the country to meet supporters.

The ruling party candidate had the backing of 53 percent of voters as campaigning drew to a close, according to a poll average compiled by research firm Oraculus.

Galvez, who lashed out at her main rival in a series of televised presidential debates, calling her an “ice lady” and “narco-candidate,” was second with 36 percent.

The only man running, 38-year-old centrist Jorge Alvarez Maynez, had just 11 percent.

Tackling the cartel violence that makes murder and kidnapping a daily occurrence in Mexico will be among the major challenges facing the next leader, along with managing migration and delicate relations with the neighboring United States.

More than 450,000 people have been murdered and tens of thousands have gone missing since the government deployed the army to fight drug trafficking in 2006.

While Mexican women enjoy growing success in politics and business, gender violence remains a major problem in a country where around 10 women are murdered every day.

And while millions of Mexicans have escaped poverty in recent years, more than a third still live below the poverty line, according to official figures.

As well as voting for a new president, Mexicans will choose members of Congress, several state governors and myriad local officials. In total, more than 20,000 positions are being contested.

Fact Check: No hospital renamed in Maryam Nawaz’s honour, Punjab government clarifies

Social media was full of speculations after an alleged notification from the Punjab Health Department went viral, with many claiming that the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology in Lahore had been renamed the “Maryam Nawaz Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Lahore.”

Multiple accounts on X (previously Twitter) posted viral tweets with the notification and severely criticised the Punjab government for changing the name of the under-construction project.

Most of the accounts that were spreading fake news were handled by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers.

According to the viral notification, the name of the under-construction building of Jinnah Institute of Cardiology will be changed to honour Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, but later on, the Punjab government clarified that the issued notification was not real.

In a rapid move, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bohhari clarified in a post on X that the notification was fake and there were no intentions to change the name of the under-construction building.

Bokhari further confirmed that no hospital’s name was being changed.

  • China’s blood-red sky shocks citizens

    China’s blood-red sky shocks citizens

Residents of a city in Zhejiang province, China, were shocked to see the night sky turn blood-red last week. The phenomenon invoked the local meteorological department to investigate the reason.

The shocking spectacle occurred around 8 pm. Chinese social media went abuzz with videos and pictures of the red sky, with some claiming it to be supernatural. However, researchers rejected the claims.

It has been revealed that the red sky was caused by a fishing boat testing its lights before going out to the sea.

    Rayleigh Scattering

The scientists said the boat’s red light underwent a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering as it encountered particles in the atmosphere, reported Yahoo News. The particles were much smaller than the wavelength of light, scattering illumination in different directions.

It’s not the first time that something like this has happened as similar events reportedly occurred in the city’s Putuo district on May 7, 2022, and in Fuzhou, Fujian province, on May 10, 2022.

  • Dead patient decomposes, locked and forgotten in hospital store

Dead patient decomposes, locked and forgotten in hospital store

The locked store of the District Headquarter Hospital in Isakhel tehsil had been harbouring the decomposed body of an elderly patient, DAWN has reported.

According to reports, Mohammad Ali, son of Mohammad Asif, was an injured elderly man who was brought to the hospital in February by Rescue 1122 after an accident. He was admitted and treated for a fracture but no relatives paid him a visit.

Ali was said to be mentally ill and grappling with speech. The patients in his ward complained about him after which he was shifted to another room.

When the Punjab health secretary visited the hospital a few days back, Ali was taken to an empty store and locked in for the duration of the visit to avoid any “objectionable” behaviour from him.

He remained locked since the hospital staff reportedly “forgot” to take him out after the visit. Days later, when a revolting smell began spreading through the hospital, the staff began interrogating only to find Ali’s decomposed body in the store room.

Upon receiving the news, Mianwali Deputy Commissioner Khalid Javed Gorayia went to the DHQ Hospital and called for an investigation into the incident.

He established an inquiry committee, led by DHO (HR) Dr. Rafiqe Khan.

An autopsy report will be provided to determine the cause of death.

The hospital administration has reportedly buried the body as an unknown person.
