Shahid Afridi to represent Pakistan again in competitive cricket

Former Pakistan captain and star all-rounder Shahid Afridi will return to competitive action as he is preparing to represent Pakistan in the IMC Over 40s T20 Cricket World Cup 2025.

The event will take place in Karachi from November 21 to December 1 and will feature veteran cricketers from around the world.

The Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA) confirmed Afridi’s participation and said the former captain will once again wear Pakistani colours at a global event. PVCA said Afridi’s involvement adds excitement and star power to the tournament that will host 12 international teams and feature 42 matches across multiple venues in Karachi.

Afridi remains one of Pakistan’s most celebrated cricketers. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he played 524 international matches and scored 11,196 runs while taking 541 wickets across formats.

He holds the record for the second fastest ODI century for Pakistan and retired as one of the leading T20I wicket-takers in the world.

Afridi has continued to stay active in franchise leagues and exhibition tournaments since retirement. He has appeared in the Legends League Cricket, Global T20 Canada and the T10 League where he remained a major attraction for fans.

In the upcoming tournament, the Pakistan Over 40s team will be led by former all-rounder Abdul Razzaq while Javed Miandad will serve as team mentor.

Both Razzaq and Afridi were Pakistan’s core match winners during the 2000s and their reunion is expected to bring experience and strong competitiveness to the veterans’ tournament.

Afridi last represented Pakistan internationally in the 2016 ICC World T20 and later retired from all forms of international cricket in 2017.

The complete squad for Pakistan Over 40s will be announced soon.

22-year-old police constable commits su*cide months before wedding

A 22-year-old police constable has committed suicide by shooting himself in the Wadala Dayal Shah area of Ferozewala, months before his wedding.

As per the details, Constable Sheroz Afzal Ansari, who belonged to Battalion No. 7 of the Punjab Constabulary and was posted on security duty at the MPA Hostels in Lahore, ended his life by shooting himself in the head at his home.

After the incident, Ferozwala police moved the body to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital for postmortem while further investigation is underway.

The incident is not the first of its kind as last month Islamabad also witnessed a distressing incident when Superintendent of Police (SP) Adeel Akbar of Industrial Area I-9 took his own life.

Initial reports said he was talking to someone over the phone before snatching the service pistol from a guard and shooting himself in the chest.

Rescue teams shifted him to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in critical condition where doctors tried to save his life, but he succumbed to injuries.

A heavy police contingent reached PIMS soon after the incident. Islamabad Police Inspector General Ali Nasir Rizvi visited the hospital, received updates from doctors and supervised postmortem arrangements.

Investigators retrieved SP Adeel Akbar’s mobile phone data as they tried to determine who made the final call to him and what had been discussed. Officers also detained the operator on duty, the gunman and other officials present at the scene for questioning.

SP Adeel Akbar belonged to the 46 Common Training Programme (CTP) batch. He had previously served in Balochistan and hailed from Kamoki.

His death raised serious concerns about stress, pressure and mental health challenges within the police force after it was revealed that a day before his death the cop visited a doctor at his private clinic and informed the medical practitioner that he was having suicidal ideation.

Psychiatrist Dr Sultan Muhammad, who checked the SP, suggested he take leave and get admitted to PIMS, but the deceased informed him that he had applied for leave that was not approved.

The doctor also asked the police official’s wife to keep his service weapon, knives and any other objects that could be used for self-harm out of his reach.

The deceased police officer held an MPhil in governance and public policy from the National Defence University and was an expert in security management, community policing, human rights protection, counter-terrorism and crisis response.

He was known among colleagues for his professionalism, humility and commitment to public service.

  • ‘Hundreds of animals killed as LDA demolishes pet market in Lahore,’ shopkeepers say; officials deny claims

‘Hundreds of animals killed as LDA demolishes pet market in Lahore,’ shopkeepers say; officials deny claims

Losses worth millions were reported by shopkeepers as Lahore Development Authority (LDA) razed a pet market in Lahore, allegedly killing or injuring hundreds of animals locked up inside – a claim rubbished by officials.

According to reports, Lahore’s famous Bird Market near the shrine of the famous saint Ali al-Hajveri, commonly known as Data Darbar, was bulldozed to the ground during the wee hours of Wednesday.

Business owners accused authorities of carrying out the operation without prior notice, claiming that hundreds of pets were buried under the rubble as a result.

They said they had earlier been informed that the site would be cleared to construct a bus stand for Data Darbar, however, “no notice was given prior to demolition” despite a meeting with LDA officials for clearance of outstanding dues, rent and utility bills amid negotiations.

The market, which reports said housed at least 165 shops, had been operating for decades since then-Punjab chief minister (CM) Nawaz Sharif’s government allotted the land back in 1992, shopkeepers said.

Reports quoted one shopkeeper as claiming that they requested a few hours to collect their earnings and relocate the animals, but officials ignored their plea and began the demolition immediately.

Viral videos on social media also showed several shopkeepers recovering animals, including birds and cats, from the rubble.

The visuals were also shared by animal rights groups who criticised the authorities over the action.

“At 4 am Lahore Develop Authority (LDA) demolished the pet and bird market without warning. Thousands of innocent cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, were buried alive under the rubble. Shopkeepers begged them to spare the animals. But the bulldozers continued to kill all in their path [sic],” Todd’s Welfare Society (TWS) said in a post on X.

Tahira Animal Welfare Foundation (TAWF) said authorities had the right to demolish the market if it was built illegally, but could have relocated the animals first.

“Last night, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) did something no one with a heart could ever justify. They demolished the bird and pet market in Lahore — and with it, buried thousands of innocent lives alive. If the market was built illegally, demolish it — but move the tiny lives first,” the group said in a post on X.

“Those cats, dogs, birds, and rabbits were not criminals. They were living, breathing beings who depended on humans for mercy. Islam teaches that taking one innocent life is like killing all of humanity. Yet, they buried countless souls without a second thought. Can anyone imagine if nature takes revenge and buries us alive the same way? We’ve already seen signs — horrific earthquakes and floods that remind us of how powerless we are before the Creator. Have we learned nothing? Where is our humanity?”

TAWF went on to say that the cries of the helpless beings still echoed, and silence made people a part of the cruelty. “Please speak up. Raise your voice for the voiceless before we lose the right to ask for mercy ourselves.”

Amid widespread outrage, reports quoted LDA officials as saying that the shops had been built unlawfully at 16-kanal state land that was included in the Bhati Chowk remodeling project aiming to get rid of the constant traffic mess and increasing noise and dust pollution in the area.

“There are no reports of birds killed during operation as the shopkeepers had already taken out all of them and other goods from their shops. And if they have any solid proof, show us,” a spokesperson said.

  • PFF announces plans for new national football league

PFF announces plans for new national football league

The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has announced that it plans to launch a new national football league, taking a major step toward rebuilding and strengthening the sport across the country.

The federation invited organizations and investors to submit Expressions of Interest along with detailed proposals before the deadline of December 6, 2025.

PFF said it aims to create a professional, competitive and sustainable league system that will support local talent and improve football standards nationwide. The federation will share information about the league structure, format and partner evaluation after the submission deadline.

The announcement comes during a period of renewed activity for Pakistan football.

Earlier this month, the PFF formed a partnership with FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation to upgrade Pakistan’s football infrastructure. The collaboration includes plans for a national training facility, FIFA-funded mini-pitches across the country and a modern academy system to support youth development and professional coaching.

FIFA Vice President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa visited Pakistan on Thursday and pledged complete support to revive football after years of administrative setbacks. Al Khalifa, a senior official from Bahrain, said FIFA will work closely with the PFF to develop infrastructure and create opportunities for young players.

Al Khalifa said he felt optimistic about the future of football in Pakistan. “I think the last high profile FIFA visit was in 2017, but I think I’ve come at the right time,” he said during a press conference. “We have an elected body at the PFF, led by President Syed Gilani, and we also see strong support from the government.”

He said he did not want to focus on past conflicts and instead wanted to look ahead. “What matters is the present and what we can do. We have a clear roadmap, and we all believe Pakistan has huge potential in football. Since development remained at a standstill for so many years, it is time to start moving forward.”

Al Khalifa said FIFA and the AFC will help Pakistan rebuild facilities and restart programs that were affected during the suspension. “We are here to help. We want to find the right solutions for the challenges we face,” he said. He also added that bringing international experts to guide Pakistan’s football system is among FIFA’s top priorities.

Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Program, thanked Al Khalifa for visiting and said the government aims to identify and train young athletes from all parts of the country. “Football has enormous potential in Pakistan,” he said. “Together with the PFF, we will identify talent, groom it and prepare stronger teams.”

He said the government is focusing on 23 sports and wants to develop athletes across all major disciplines. “Along with cricket, hockey and football, we are promoting gymnastics, athletics and other popular global sports,” he said.

FIFA has suspended the federation several times in recent years for third party interference, a violation that occurs when outside groups take control of a federation’s internal affairs.

FIFA imposed the most recent suspension in February 2025 when the PFF failed to adopt a FIFA approved constitution that would guarantee transparent elections.

The ban ended a month later after the federation accepted the document and elected Syed Mohsen Gilani as the 17th president in May.

  • $1 trillion for Elon Musk; Tesla approves enormous pay package

$1 trillion for Elon Musk; Tesla approves enormous pay package

Tesla shareholders have approved a one trillion dollar pay plan for Elon Musk, making it the largest pay package in corporate history.

Musk, who already ranks as the world’s wealthiest person, could become the richest person in history if he meets the targets attached to the package.

Shareholders voted during Tesla’s annual meeting in Austin, where 75 percent supported the plan. Several investors opposed the package, but the majority expressed full confidence in Musk’s leadership and long term vision for the company.

Musk thanked shareholders on stage and celebrated the approval by dancing with Tesla’s Optimus robots. He called the robots the future of the company and the future of humanity. Musk said Optimus will become “the biggest product in history” and claimed it will be useful in medical services and daily life.

Tesla tied Musk’s trillion dollar payout to strict performance goals. He must increase Tesla’s market value to 8.5 trillion dollars, which is eight times higher than its current valuation. The goals are divided into twelve milestones, and Musk also needs to present a long term succession plan.

He has a decade to meet the targets. During that period, Tesla must sell twenty million electric vehicles, one million humanoid robots, and one million robotaxis for commercial use. The company must also sell ten million full self driving subscription plans. Musk needs to keep Tesla’s quarterly revenue above four hundred billion dollars for four straight quarters. In comparison, Tesla reported 4.2 billion dollars in revenue in the third quarter of 2025.

The compensation plan exceeds the annual GDP of several countries, including Ireland, Sweden and Argentina. Critics say the package concentrates too much power in one individual and ignores challenges Tesla faces in an increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.

This is not the first time Tesla offered Musk a historic pay plan.

In 2018, Tesla shareholders approved a fifty six billion dollar pay package for him. Tesla investor Richard Tornetta challenged that plan in a Delaware court. He argued that Musk wrote the package for himself and that the board hid key details from shareholders. The court ruled that Tesla’s board acted improperly and struck down the plan.

Musk currently leads global wealth rankings with a net worth of 461 billion dollars.

Pakistan Shaheens name 15-member squad for Men’s Asia Cup Rising Stars 2025

Pakistan Shaheens have announced the names of the players to be included in their squad for the Men’s Asia Cup Rising Stars 2025, an eight team tournament that will take place in Qatar from November 14 – 23.

Mohammad Irfan Khan will lead the squad as Pakistan prepare to compete in a fast paced T20 format event designed to showcase emerging talent from across Asia.

According to the schedule, Pakistan Shaheens feature in Group B with Oman, India A and the United Arab Emirates. Group A includes Afghanistan A, Bangladesh A, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka A. The T20 tournament will follow a straightforward format, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the semifinals on 21 November. The final will take place on November 23.

Pakistan Shaheens will open their campaign on November 14 against Oman. They will face India A on November 16 in what is expected to be one of the most watched matches of the group stage. The final group match for the Shaheens will be played on November 18 against the UAE.

Pakistan Shaheens squad for the tournament:

Mohammad Irfan Khan (captain), Ahmed Daniyal, Arafat Minhas, Moaz Sadaqat, Mohammad Faiq, Mohammad Ghazi Ghori, Mohammad Naeem, Mohammad Salman, Mohammad Shehzad, Mubasir Khan, Saad Masood, Shahid Aziz, Sufyan Muqeem, Ubaid Shah and Yasir Khan.

Pakistan Shaheens serve as the national A team and act as the main platform for young and emerging players moving toward international cricket.

Their biggest achievement came in July 2023, when they defeated India A by 128 runs in the ACC Emerging Asia Cup final in Colombo.

Tayyab Tahir smashed 108 off 71 balls, helping Pakistan Shaheens post 352 for 8.

India A struggled in the chase and were bowled out for 224, giving Pakistan a dominant victory and the Emerging Asia Cup title. Bowlers Sufyan Muqeem and Arshad Iqbal played key roles in the win.

The 2023 title win showed the strength of Pakistan’s bench and highlighted players who later broke into the senior side.

In the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup, the Pakistan Emerging side produced a dominant tournament and defeated Bangladesh Emerging in the final to win the title.

Pakistan Shaheens also delivered strong performances in previous A tours. They played competitive cricket on tours to Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, where several players recorded career-boosting performances.

Many current Pakistan players, including Saud Shakeel, Tayyab Tahir, Mohammad Haris and Sufyan Muqeem, strengthened their careers through Shaheens-level tournaments.

  • ‘Commander of Defence Forces’ title among key issues to be decided in new amendments

‘Commander of Defence Forces’ title among key issues to be decided in new amendments

A new designation titled “Commander of the Defence Forces” is among the key issues that will be discussed as part of new amendments to Article 243 of the Constitution, media outlets have reported.

The new title is part of an effort to ensure greater coordination and unified command among army, air force and navy.

Sources have said that the move to finalise the new title has been shaped by both the recent May clashes with India and the emerging nature of new warfare that demands integrated responses.

The 27th Constitutional Amendment remains largely under wraps. However a few pointers had been revealed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), in a tweet he posted last Monday. Among the key points he listed were amendments to Article 243.

The Article states: “The Federal Government shall have control and command of the Armed Forces” and “the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces shall vest in the President”, among other things.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif made it clear during an appearance on a news channel that that consultations on 243 are underway. “Defence requirements have changed,” Asif said categorically, adding that his party, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is aiming for mutual consultations.

PPP, on the other hand, rejected most of the proposed amendments, but hinted at offering support to changes in Article 243. After a prolonged CEC meeting held in Lahore, Bilawal addressed a presser late on Thursday night, stating that his party will offer conditional support to amending Article 243.

Flanked by senior members of his party, Bilawal stated that the proposed changes included giving a new title to the office of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, creating a new office regarding Strategic Forces Command, and conferring the rank of Field Marshal upon the incumbent army chief following Pakistan’s declared military victory against India earlier this year.

The head of PPP, the party largely responsible for the 18th Amendment, then firmly rejected changes to National Finance Commission (NFC) formula for allocating resources to the provinces.

  • Shocking details revealed as Bangladeshi cricketer accuses former selector of sexual harassment

Shocking details revealed as Bangladeshi cricketer accuses former selector of sexual harassment

Bangladesh women’s cricket fast bowler Jahanara Alam has accused former selector Manzoor Islam of sexual harassment during the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup.

The cricketer said in a YouTube interview that she experienced repeated inappropriate behaviour and offensive advances and that senior officials ignored her complaints.

Jahanara, who stepped away from cricket because of mental health issues, said one member of team management made unethical proposals through a coordinator in 2021. She said the situation became worse when she refused.

“I tried to change the topic politely, but when I said no, the next day Manju bhai (Manzoor Islam) changed his behaviour toward me and tried to belittle me,” she said.

She added that the behaviour continued during the 2022 World Cup. Manzoor Islam tried to come close to her physically, she stated, and made offensive comments about her body.

“He put his hand on my shoulder, came too close and sometimes tried to hug me. All of us girls tried to avoid him,” she said. “Once he asked me, ‘How many days has it been since your period?’ I was shocked. I only said, ‘Sorry bhai, I didn’t understand.’”

Jahanara said she contacted several senior Bangladesh Cricket Board officials but received no action in response. She said she informed women’s committee head Nadil Chowdhury and BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury but nothing changed.

“They made inappropriate advances again and again,” she said. “When you work in a team, you cannot say everything openly. If your livelihood depends on it, it becomes difficult to protest.”

Manzoor Islam rejected all accusations. “I strongly deny these allegations. Ask other players what kind of a person I was,” he said. Another official named Babu also dismissed Jahanara’s claims and said she made up the story.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board responded to the interview and acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. BCB vice chairman Shakawat Hussain said the board will discuss the matter and decide the next steps.

“These allegations are very serious. We will sit together soon and decide what to do next. If needed, we will open a formal inquiry,” he said.

Jahanara is one of Bangladesh’s most experienced women’s cricketers. She represented her country for more than a decade in both ODI and T20 formats.

She played in several ICC Women’s World Cups and T20 World Cups and remained one of the team’s leading fast bowlers. She was also part of the Bangladesh squad that won the Women’s Asia Cup in 2018, the country’s first major international title in women’s cricket.
