Trump moves nuclear submarines after Russian ex-president’s statement

United States (US) President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines Friday in an extraordinary escalation of what had been an online war of words with a Russian official over Ukraine and tariffs.

Trump and Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s security council, have been sparring on social media for days.

Trump’s post on his Truth Social platform abruptly took that spat into the very real, and rarely publicised, sphere of nuclear forces.

“Based on the highly provocative statements,” Trump said he had “ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”

“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances,” the 79-year-old Republican posted.

Trump did not say in his post whether he meant nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines. He also did not elaborate on the exact deployment locations, which are kept secret by the US military.

But in an interview with Newsmax that aired Friday night, Trump said the submarines were “closer to Russia.”

“We always want to be ready. And so I have sent to the region two nuclear submarines,” he said.

“I just want to make sure that his words are only words and nothing more than that.”

Trump’s remarks came hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow had started mass producing its hypersonic nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile, and could deploy them to Belarus, a close Russian ally neighbouring Ukraine, by year-end.

The nuclear sabre-rattling came against the backdrop of a deadline set by Trump for the end of next week for Russia to take steps to ending the Ukraine war or face unspecified new sanctions.

Despite the pressure from Washington, Russia’s onslaught against its pro-Western neighbor continues to unfold at full bore.

Russian attacks have killed hundreds of Ukrainian civilians since June. A combined missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Thursday killed 31 people, rescuers said.

Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire, said Friday that he wants peace but that his demands for ending his nearly three-and-a-half year invasion were “unchanged”.

Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO.

Putin, speaking alongside Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, said Belarusian and Russian specialists “have chosen a place for future positions” of the Oreshnik missiles.

“Work is now underway to prepare these positions. So, most likely, we will close this issue by the end of the year,” he added.

    – Insults, nuclear rhetoric –

The United States and Russia control the vast majority of the world’s nuclear weaponry, and Washington keeps nuclear-armed submarines on permanent patrol as part of its so-called nuclear triad of land, sea and air-launched weapons.

Trump told Newsmax that Medvedev’s “nuclear” reference prompted him to reposition US nuclear submarines.

“When you mention the word ‘nuclear’… my eyes light up. And I say, we better be careful, because it’s the ultimate threat,” Trump said in the interview.

Medvedev had criticised Trump on his Telegram account Thursday and alluded to the “fabled ‘Dead Hand’” — a reference to a highly secret automated system put in place during the Cold War to control the country’s nuclear weapons.

This came after Trump had lashed out at what he called the “dead economies” of Russia and India.

Medvedev had also harshly criticized Trump’s threat of new sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine.

Accusing Trump of “playing the ultimatum game,” he posted Monday on X that Trump “should remember” that Russia is a formidable force.

Trump responded by calling Medvedev “the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President.”

Medvedev should “watch his words,” Trump posted at midnight in Washington on Wednesday. “He’s entering very dangerous territory!”

Medvedev is a vocal proponent of Russia’s war — and generally antagonistic to relations with the West.

He served as president between 2008-2012, effectively acting as a placeholder for Putin, who was able to circumvent constitutional term limits and remain in de facto power.

The one-time reformer has rebranded over the years as an avid online troller, touting often extreme versions of official Kremlin nationalist messaging.

But his influence within the Russian political system remains limited.

In Kyiv on Friday, residents held a day of mourning for the 31 people, including five children, killed the day before, most of whom were in a nine-storey apartment block torn open by a missile.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders.

“The United States has proposed this. Ukraine has supported it. What is needed is Russia’s readiness,” he wrote on X.

  • FACT CHECK: Did Trump just call Modi out for not responding to his tweets?

FACT CHECK: Did Trump just call Modi out for not responding to his tweets?

A screenshot of United States (US) President Donald Trump’s Truth Social post that called Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi out for not responding to the announcement of whopping 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on New Delhi, has turned out to be fake.

“So hard to believe that Prime Minister Modi STILL has not responded to my tweets, statements or tariffs concerns. We gave India so much, great deals, defense support, big crowds and yet, TOTAL SILENCE. Not even a thankyou [sic],” read the post, a screenshot of which went viral on social media on Friday.

“Don’t forgot I am the one who got India and Pakistan to declare a ceasefire. Nobody else could do that. Many people said I should have gotten the Nobel Prize for it!!,” it read, adding that India “continued to benefit while American workers suffer”.

“I have always liked Modi but this kind of disrespect will NOT be forgotten. Bad for business, bad for friendship #AmericaFirst,” the post said.

With a screenshot of the post going viral and several social media users sharing it, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), here, here and here, The Current conducted a thorough investigation into the authenticity of the screenshot, reviewing all of President Trump’s posts on Truth Social over the past 24 hours.

Going through all 40 posts shared by the US president on Truth Social over the past day, The Current was unable to find the one wherein he directly called out the Indian premier.

While any cached records were also not found– used to verify authenticity in case of post deletion – The Current discovered that the screenshot being shared online originated from an account named Wokeflix, a digital outlet that falsely attributed the statement to President Trump.

  • FBR posts Rs755 billion revenue for July, exceeding target by Rs7 billion

FBR posts Rs755 billion revenue for July, exceeding target by Rs7 billion

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has surpassed its collection target for the first month of fiscal year (FY) 2025-26, by collecting Rs755 billion in revenues against the monthly target of Rs748 billion. This was reportedly made possible by an improvement in indirect tax collection.

Data from reports suggests that the collection figure for the first month of FY 2025-26 was Rs96 billion higher compared to the corresponding period last year. This marks almost a 15 percent improvement in YoY revenue collections.

The federal government has set a staggering Rs14.13 trillion revenue target for FY 2025-26, a colossal task for the FBR as the target is 20 percent higher than that set in the previous fiscal year. Reports suggest that the revenue watchdog is utilising enhanced tax enforcement measures along with recouping taxes that have been “tied up in litigation”.

While the FBR has surpassed its overall collection target by Rs7 billion, only two sub-targets were met – customs duties and sales tax – while failing to meet the rest, including targets for federal excise duty and income tax.

Authorities were able to collect a staggering Rs106 billion in customs duties, a figure Rs14 billion higher than the targeted collection level. Reports indicate that this surge in customs duty collection came about as importers refrained from bringing goods into the country as they expected lower duties in FY 2025-26.

Sales tax collections were Rs12 billion higher than the target in place for the first month of FY 2025-26, with total collections reaching Rs302 billion. This marks a YoY increase in sales tax collections of Rs46 billion.

However, reports claim that high duty rates affected company sales for certain products. This strengthens the claim of some members of the business community who believe that the revenue target has been met at their expense.

This is because the federal government imposed a tax disallowance, resulting in business owners remaining unable to disallow 50 percent of claimed expenditures on the sales of goods valued over Rs200,000.

Businesses have logged their frustrations against this law via protests in July 2025, as it results in an increase in the taxable income of businesses. Recent reports suggested that this would allow the FBR to witness a boost in revenues, which is exactly what has occurred.

The FBR’s uptick in collection levels, however, has reportedly decreased profit margins for businesses, whose prices and sales volumes have remained unchanged, and who are compliant with taxation laws. The business community has also raised concerns about the presence of FBR’s tax inspectors at business sites, as the federal government claimed it would track production and sales values digitally.

  • Diesel prices up by Rs31 per litre since June 1

Diesel prices up by Rs31 per litre since June 1

After two consecutive hikes in petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices, the federal government has announced new petroleum rates for the upcoming fortnight. The price of petrol has been reduced by Rs7.54 per litre, falling from Rs272.15 to Rs265.61 per litre.

However, it merits a mention that the price of HSD has continued to rise, with the government increasing it by Rs1.48 per litre. As a result, HSD now stands at Rs285.83 per litre and will remain in effect until August 15, 2025.

Previously, analysts had indicated a possible fall in the prices of both petrol and HSD by Rs6.82 per litre and Rs1.68 per litre, respectively. Similarly, Arif Habib Limited (AHL) believed that persistent increases in fuel prices had created room for the government to reduce the prices of both HSD and petrol.

Data from reports suggests that the price of diesel has increased sharply since June 1, rising from a conservative Rs254.64 per litre to a staggering Rs285.83 per litre. This Rs31.19 hike in HSD prices since June 1 translates to a 12.24 percent increase in the rate of the commodity.

The hike in HSD prices is likely to raise operating costs for both the transport and agriculture sectors. This increase could have detrimental effects on the economy, as it directly increases food prices. HSD is widely used in agriculture to power tractors and other mechanised farming equipment.

An increase in HSD rates could also negatively impact the transport sector, given its reliance on fuel. For instance, the transportation sector has diesel as a primary input and thus requires vast quantities of the commodity. Higher HSD prices imply higher operational costs for businesses in the transportation sector.

Moreover, the projected increase in HSD prices is likely to stifle economic activity for businesses that transport goods from factories to stores, as transportation costs will increase, resulting in a drop in profit margins.

People relying on private buses and wagons for daily commuting are also likely to be affected, as transport fares are expected to rise to protect vehicle owners’ profit margins. Commuters may face higher fares for an extended period, since analysts point out that fares tend to remain high even after HSD prices decrease following an increase.

  • Four-year-old, parents hacked to death in Karachi

Four-year-old, parents hacked to death in Karachi

A couple and their four-year-old son were brutally murdered in the Ghaghar Phatak area of Karachi’s Steel Town on Wednesday, police said.

The victims were identified as Abdul Majeed (30), his wife Sakina (25), and their son Abdul Nabi. The family was reportedly attacked with axes inside their home. Police suspect they may have been drugged before the attack, as no screams or disturbances were reported by neighbours.

According to Steel Town SHO Aslam Billu, the couple had married of their own choice in Lasbela over five years ago, against the wishes of Sakina’s family.

They moved to Karachi about eight months ago. Although Sakina’s family had reportedly reconciled with the couple and even visited them recently, police believe the murder was likely carried out by her relatives, who may not have truly let go of their grievances.

Notably, the day before the murders, Sakina’s brother had come to visit her and gone shopping with the couple.

According to SHO Aslam Billu, Majeed’s brother, Imam Bux, received a call from an alleged killer, informing him that the family had been murdered and asking him to come and bury them. Imam Bux and another brother, Qurban, had been living with Majeed’s family in Karachi but had recently returned to Lasbela for agricultural work.

Qurban called his friend Munawar Abro after the call and asked him to ascertain the facts. Abro arrived at Majeed’s place, and he found the three family members lying dead inside.

The bodies were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities after police were informed. During the investigation, police recovered two blood-stained axes and other evidence from the scene.

The police waited for the legal heirs to file a formal complaint and start their legal proceedings.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar took notice of the murders, sought a detailed report from the Karachi police chief, and ordered that the suspects be arrested without delay.

The home minister also directed that peace in the area be ensured, the spokesperson added.

Saba Qamar says she’s ‘back’ after scary hospital stay in ICU

A-list star Saba Qamar suddenly fainted during a shoot, prompting her to be shifted immediately to a hospital in Rawalpindi.

After timely medical assistance from doctors, her condition improved, and she has now recovered and been discharged.

According to media reports, Saba Qamar was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital in Rawalpindi after her health deteriorated during a shoot.

She experienced heart-related discomfort, prompting her immediate admission to the hospital’s ICU.

Reports added that doctors carried out several medical procedures to stabilize her condition, including an angiography, a process where dye is injected into the bloodstream to look for blockages in vessels.

According to the doctors, her condition was “critical upon arrival”, and if timely medical help had not been provided, “the situation could have been life-threatening.” Fortunately, her condition improved and continues to do so.

Reports citing sources close to the actress revealed that she was working on a major project and had been under severe mental stress and exhaustion. Doctors attributed her health scare to “lack of sleep and extreme work pressure.”

Saba has now been discharged from the hospital. Doctors have advised her to take several weeks of complete rest and avoid any physical exertion to ensure full recovery.

She shared a photo with her caregivers and team in an Instagram story, thanking fans for their support.

She wrote, “Hey my loveliest people! Thank you soooo much for all the love, concern, and prayers I’m totally fine (promise!). Just had a little pause, but now I’m back like I never left!”

“And guess what? You’re stuck with me… foreverrr I’m not going any where so get ready for more work, more madness, and more me! Sending you all a big warm hug and lots of sparkle. Love you always,” she added.

  • Indian economy is dead, here’s why…

Indian economy is dead, here’s why…

India’s Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday reaffirmed US President Donald Trump’s assertion that the Indian economy is “dead”, sharply criticising the Narendra Modi administration’s approach to economic, defense, and foreign policies.

While addressing reporters outside parliament, Gandhi stated, “He [Trump] is correct. Everyone understands that the Indian economy is a dead economy, apart from the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister.” He accused the BJP of undermining the nation’s economy “to assist Adani,” referencing businessman Gautam Adani. Gandhi further questioned India’s lack of action on US tariffs. “Trump has now announced that he will impose 25 percent tariffs (along with a penalty for purchasing Russian oil and weapons). Why can’t PM Modi provide a response? What is the true reason? Who holds power” he questioned.

Donald Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on Indian imports, set to take effect from August 1. The US president associated his decision with India’s persistent trade ties with Russia and its defense collaboration. “I don’t mind what India does with Russia. They can suffer together with their dead economies, for all I care,” Trump remarked on Truth Social, signalling a marked departure from the usual cordial relations between the two countries. In response, the Modi administration stated it “will take all steps necessary to secure our national interest.”

Later, Gandhi elaborated on his criticisms in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “THE INDIAN ECONOMY IS DEAD. Modi killed it.” He outlined five reasons for his statement: the Adani-Modi alliance, demonetization, a problematic GST rollout, the failure of the “Assemble in India” initiative, and the ongoing crisis affecting farmers.

Though the post did not elaborate on the points, they echo themes Gandhi has previously discussed. He has frequently accused the government of favoring Adani through policy choices. Regarding demonetization and GST, he has held the government responsible for destabilizing small enterprises. Gandhi has criticized Make in India as a failed strategy, claiming it resulted in greater reliance on imports. He has also underscored the effects of policy changes on MSMEs and farmers, citing unemployment and increasing debt levels.

Meanwhile in Moscow, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev dismissed Trump’s comments as a “nervous reaction,” asserting that Russia would maintain its current path despite US alerts.

Seven-year-old booked under anti-terror act for sharing video on social media

A seven-year-old boy has been booked in a terrorism abetment case in Gwadar for allegedly sharing a video on social media, a news outlet reported, citing officials.

According to details, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Makran, accusing the minor of sharing a video of a speech by human rights activist Gulzar Dost in Turbat. The boy was presented in court on Thursday.

According to a news report quoting officials, the controversial speech delivered by Dost was shared on TikTok by the minor. Authorities claimed this act constituted a crime under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), as the orator had been placed on the Fourth Schedule by the provincial government.

Dost has been in detention for the last two weeks.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) condemned the action, saying that it was “appalled” by reports that a minor has been presented before an anti-terrorism court on charges of “terrorism” for allegedly sharing the speech of a rights activist on social media.

The commission said that the “misuse” of anti-terror laws reflected a “gross violation of child rights and due process”.

HRCP has demanded the “immediate withdrawal of charges, a thorough review of the FIR and accountability for the officials responsible for this alarming overreach”.
