Senate body approves significant hike in cash withdrawal tax for non-filers

The Senate Standing Committee on Finance has approved a proposal to increase the withholding tax on cash withdrawals to one percent for the fiscal year 2025–26. According to reports, the hike will apply only to non-filers.

The move was reportedly recommended by Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Rashid Mahmood Langrial, who suggested that the withholding tax should be raised from its current rate of 0.6 percent. Reports have outlined how the one percent tax on cash withdrawals by non-filers is higher than the 0.8 percent rate that was initially proposed.

In the outgoing fiscal year, cash withdrawals made by non-filers via credit cards exceeding Rs50,000 were also subject to a 0.6 percent withholding tax. The increase in the tax rate is now intended to boost the federal government’s revenues for FY 2025-26.

In the weeks leading up to this development, it emerged that the FBR aimed to use the tax hike to “penalise” non-filers. The government also appears to target non-filers on other fronts, with reports suggesting that Islamabad may scrap the non-filer category altogether, curtailing their financial freedoms.

Reports suggested that non-filers may not be allowed to make financial transactions of any kind. While the government expects its move to broaden the tax net by penalising non-filers, analysts have outlined how this could lead to the rise of unrecorded transactions.

This may cause a significant setback to the federal government, which is implementing reforms to transition the economy towards a cashless system. According to reports, in meetings held prior to the release of the budget, the finance minister pushed for stronger digitisation efforts and a move to limit cash transactions.

Reports indicate that withdrawals larger than Rs50,000 will result in tax deduction from the entire amount. Under a one percent withdrawal rate, withdrawals amounting to Rs75,000 in a single day will result in non-filers paying Rs750 to the federal government. Similarly, non-filers withdrawing Rs100,000 in a single day will have to face a tax of Rs1000.

While the tax seems nominal at first glance, it could prove to be a respectable source of revenue for the government if non-filers continue to use the formal banking system. However, the government will have to ensure that non-filers do not resort to informal channels for transferring cash.

Israeli attacks kill at least 140 across Gaza in 24 hours

Gaza’s civil defence agency said 33 more people were killed by Israeli fire in the Palestinian territory on Wednesday, including 11 who were seeking aid, bringing the 24-hour death toll to at least 140.

The Israel-led genocide of Palestinians in Gaza worsened after Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, ravaging the Strip with Israel deliberately creating severe shortages of food, fuel and clean water.

Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 11 people were killed and more than 100 wounded “after the occupation forces opened fire and launched several shells… at thousands of citizens” who had gathered to queue for food in central Gaza.

The military told AFP that its forces operating in central Gaza identified “a group of suspicious individuals” approaching “in a manner that posed a potential threat to the forces.”

It said its troops then fired “warning shots”, but that it was “unaware of injuries”.

In early March, Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza, amid a deadlock in truce negotiations, only partially easing restrictions in late May.

    – Soldier killed –

Since then, chaotic scenes and a string of deadly shootings have occurred near areas where Palestinians have gathered in hopes of receiving aid.

The civil defence agency said another 19 people were killed in three Israeli strikes on Wednesday, which it said targeted houses and a tent for displaced people.

The Israeli military told AFP regarding one of those attacks that its troops were “operating to dismantle Hamas military capabilities”.

Later Wednesday, the Israeli army said a soldier — staff sergeant Stav Halfon — had been killed during an operation in the southern Gaza Strip.

In another incident, three more people were killed in an Israeli air strike on a neighbourhood northeast of Gaza City on Wednesday, Bassal said.

Israeli restrictions on media in the Gaza Strip and difficulties in accessing some areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence agency.

The agency reported that at least 53 people were killed on Tuesday, as they gathered near an aid centre in the southern city of Khan Yunis hoping to receive flour.

After Israel eased its blockade, the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began distributing aid in late May, but its operations have been marred by chaotic scenes and dozens of deaths.

    – ‘Acute food insecurity’ –

UN agencies and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the foundation over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives.

However, the UN humanitarian office OCHA pointed out Tuesday that incidents “are also increasingly occurring along routes used by the UN to deliver humanitarian supplies”, not just GHF.

It added that its humanitarian partners, including the World Food Programme (WFP), have reported that fuel in Gaza was reaching “critically low levels”.

“Without immediate resupply, essential services — including the provision of clean water — will grind to a halt very soon,” the statement added.

OCHA said on Monday that its partners “continue to warn of the risk of famine in Gaza, amid catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity”.

The Gaza health ministry said on Wednesday that 5,334 people have been killed since Israel resumed major operations in the territory on March 18, ending a two-month truce.

The overall death toll in Gaza since October 7, 2023, has reached 55,637 people, according to the health ministry.

Sydney Sixers picks Babar Azam in Platinum category: Here is how much he will earn

Australian Big Bash League (BBL) team Sydney Sixers have signed Pakistani cricketer Babar Azam in the Platinum category for the league’s 15th season. The Sixers used their pre-draft signing right to secure Babar as their overseas pick.

‘Pakistan knows Iran very well, better than most’: Trump following meeting with COAS Munir

US President Donald Trump met with Field Marshal Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Syed Asim Munir in the White House’s Cabinet Room on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, President Trump was asked whether the discussions included the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

In response, he said: “They [Pakistan] know Iran very well, better than most, and they’re not happy about anything. It’s not that they’re bad with Israel. They know them both, actually, but they know Iran better. He [Field Marshal Munir] agreed with me.”

President Trump also thanked Field Marshal Asim Munir for not going to war with India, and expressed similar gratitude to Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, whom he said had met with him “a few days ago.”

“These two very smart people decided not to keep going with a war that could have been a nuclear war. Pakistan and India are two big nuclear powers,” he added.

President Trump also reveal that the US is working on a trade deal with Islamabad and New Delhi.

Field Marshal Asim Munir has become the first serving Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to hold a one-on-one meeting with a sitting US president. It also marks the first time a serving Pakistani army chief, without holding political office or ruling under martial law, has been formally received at this level.

Meanwhile, just hours after Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated in a video message that Prime Minister Modi had a 35-minute phone call with the U.S. president, during which Modi reportedly said the US had no role in mediating between Pakistan and India, President Trump dismissed the claim.

Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn later that day, Trump asserted that it was, in fact, he who had stopped the war.

He said, “Well, I stopped a war … I love Pakistan. I think Modi is a fantastic man. I spoke to him last night. We’re going to make a trade deal with Modi of India. But I stopped the war between Pakistan and India.”

PHF responds to unpaid allowance claims during Nations Hockey Cup

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Tariq Bugti has responded to reports alleging that players have not received their daily allowance in the ongoing Nations Hockey Cup in Malaysia.

Speaking to a private news channel in Kuala Lumpur, where he is present to support the team, Bugti clarified that daily allowances are not given in advance. “Payments are made after the event ends and only when funds are available,” he explained. “Even with limited resources, I’m trying to do everything possible to secure a better future for Pakistan hockey.”

Bugti maintained that the real priority should be the semi-final against France and reaching the final. He stressed that winning the tournament would allow Pakistan to qualify for the prestigious FIH Pro League.

He stated that the federation is aware of the players’ difficulties and is doing its best despite limited resources. “The government’s support is there, but it needs to improve. Once we start receiving funds in line with our needs, things will become more manageable,” he said.

“We want Pakistan to win this Nations Cup and qualify for the Pro League,” he said. “Despite challenges like financial constraints and fewer international matches, the players and management have shown great commitment.”

He also highlighted an improvement in Pakistan’s world ranking. “When I took charge, Pakistan was ranked 18th. We are now in 13th place, which reflects the positive direction we are moving in.”

Earlier, there were reports that players had not received their daily allowance for more than ten days despite reaching the tournament’s semi-finals.

FIH Nations Cup: New Zealand edge Pakistan out 4-3 in thrilling contest

New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 4-3 in a thrilling encounter at the FIH Nations Cup in Malaysia, despite the Green Shirts holding a strong lead early in the match.

Pakistan played aggressively in the beginning and was up by 3-1 at the end of the first half. Nic Woods opened the scoring for New Zealand in the sixth minute, but Abdul Rehman struck twice in the 13th and 14th minutes to give Pakistan the lead. Rana Waheed Ashraf added a third goal in the 28th minute to strengthen their advantage.

The momentum shifted in the third quarter when Scott Colson scored back-to-back goals in the 43rd and 45th minutes, levelling the score at 3-3. He then completed his hat-trick in the 52nd minute with a goal from a penalty corner, putting New Zealand ahead 4-3.

Pakistan must now wait for the result of the Malaysia vs Japan match to know their semi-final fate. A defeat for the host team would open the door for Pakistan to qualify for the final four.

Meanwhile, France and South Korea have already booked their spots in the semi-finals from Pool A.

  • Careem bids farewell to Pakistan

    Careem bids farewell to Pakistan

After almost 10 years of operations, ride-hailing app Careem is shutting down its services in Pakistan in July this year but has said that it will stick around in a “different role.”

Mudassir Sheikha, co-founder and CEO of Careem, took to LinkedIn to post about “a new chapter” for the company.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share this update: Careem will suspend its ride-hailing service in Pakistan on July 18,” Sheikha said, adding that it was “an incredibly difficult decision.”

“The challenging macroeconomic reality, intensifying competition, and global capital allocation made it hard to justify the investment levels required to deliver a safe and dependable service in the country.

“In the end, the Careem Rides team had to make this tough call,” he wrote.

He referred to the ride suspension as “the end of an ironic chapter — one built with purpose, grit and a ton of relentless hustle”.

Sheikha pointed out several remarkable accomplishments of Careem while functioning in Pakistan, such as providing safe rides on demand, allowing women to travel with strangers, and promoting the use of smartphones and digital payments in daily life.

He praised his team for creating a service that millions of people in Pakistan depend on “to move and earn”.

Sheikha mentioned that while ride-hailing is finishing, Careem’s presence in Pakistan will persist in a new capacity.

“Careem Technologies (the spinout building the Everything App) will continue to build from Pakistan for the region.”

Sheikha mentioned that around 400 Careem employees from various departments, including engineering, are working on developing the Everything App and its range of services (food and grocery delivery, payments, etc.).

Careem officially entered the Pakistani market in October 2015, providing a website, an app, and a helpline for customers to request rides. It currently operates in 12 countries in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as in Turkiye and Pakistan.

  • Sonam Kapoor’s throwback with Fawad Khan sparks mixed fan reactions online

Sonam Kapoor’s throwback with Fawad Khan sparks mixed fan reactions online

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor recently posted throwback photos with Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, prompting a wave of nostalgia, sarcasm, and political jabs in the comments. The pictures, shared on her official Facebook page, were from their 2014 hit Khoobsurat, which marked Fawad’s Bollywood debut and earned him widespread fame in India.

Sonam captioned the stills: “Magic on screen with Fawad Khan,” reviving memories of their charming on-screen chemistry. Fawad played the royal character of Prince Vikram Singh Rathore opposite Sonam, and his performance won him the Best Debut Male award at the Filmfare Awards.

While many fans appreciated the post, calling the duo a “one-time Jodi with endless memories,” others took a more critical and/or sarcastic approach.

One user commented, “I think every time Sonam fights with her husband, she posts these pics. And she has posted them a lot of times.” Another said, “Ah… so Sonam is stuck in the never-ending cycle of Fawad charm? I get it.”

Some took a dig at Bollywood itself, with a user writing, “RIP Bollywood.”

Others brought in political tones, with a comment saying, “Go Pakistan and do romance with him,” while another added, “Your memories are burning your own Indians.”

Despite the mixed reactions, many fans from Pakistan jumped in with love and support, saying, “Love from Pakistan, both are looking fantastic.”

This post comes amidst the tensions between Pakistan and India following increased escalation last month, in May.

The relations between the two nations worsened after the deadly Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on April 22, in which 26 civilians, including tourists, were killed. India accused Pakistan of backing the attack, an allegation Islamabad strongly denies as baseless and one that India has yet to prove.

India has since launched a digital and diplomatic crackdown on Pakistan. It blocked access to the social media accounts of dozens of Pakistani actors, athletes, and public figures. This included celebrities like Fawad Khan, singer Atif Aslam, cricketers Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and retired stars like Shahid Afridi and Wasim Akram. Five Jaffar Express coaches derail after explosion on track

An explosion on the railway track in Jacobabad has derailed five coaches of the Jaffar Express.

According to Railways Police, five coaches of the train derailed following the explosion near Jacobabad’s vegetable market.

No casualties have so far been reported, police said, adding that operations had however been suspended since after the explosion.

Jacobabad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Saddam Hussein Khaskhaili said that bomb disposal squad was determining the nature of the explosion and an investigation into the incident was underway.

It merits a mention that while the nature of the explosion remained unknown by the time this report was filed, the incident comes months after armed men attacked Jaffar Express in Balochistan.

In March 2025, a group of terrorists launched an attack on a train en route to Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), from Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, carrying over 400 passengers. Following the assault, the terrorists took passengers hostage.

In a statement, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that intelligence reports have unequivocally confirmed that the attack was orchestrated and directed by terrorist ringleaders operating from Afghanistan, who remained in direct communication with the attackers throughout the incident.

Director General (DG) ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, while speaking to a private media channel minutes after the completion of the rescue operation, claimed that security forces had eliminated all 33 Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) terrorists who had hijacked the Jaffar Express. However, 21 passengers were martyred by the terrorists before the clearance operation commenced, he said.

The military’s media wing spokesperson detailed that the army, air force, Frontier Corps (FC), and Special Services Group had participated in the operation and successfully recovered the hostages.
