Pro-Gaza activists ‘stopped in Libya, Egypt’

Pro-Palestinian activists seeking to march to Gaza with the stated aim of breaking Israel’s blockade on the territory were stopped Friday in both Libya and Egypt, organisers said.

“Forty participants of the Global March to Gaza have had their passports taken at a checkpoint on the way out of Cairo,” organisers said in a statement.

“They are being held in the heat and not allowed to move,” the statement said, adding that another “15 are being held at hotels”. The activists are from France, Spain, Canada, Turkey and the United Kingdom, it said.

“We are a peaceful movement and we are complying with Egyptian law.”

The group urged embassies to help secure their release so they could complete their voyage.

It later sent video footage to AFP showing Egyptian security forces intervening to break up impromptu sit-ins.

Women were “molested and carried like cattle onto the bus”, according to a message from Florence Heskia, one of the protesters stuck on the road.

Sindh announces Rs3.45 trillion budget, salary hikes

Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah unveiled a Rs3.451 trillion provincial budget for 2025–26 on Friday amid loud opposition protests. According to data from reports, this marks a 12.9 percent jump from fiscal year (FY) 2024-25’s Rs3.056 trillion budget.

Sindh’s CM outlined that the province intended to run a budget deficit in FY 2025-26. Reports reveal that outlays exceed receipts, causing the projected deficit to stand at a whopping Rs38 billion.

As per CM Sindh, government employees in grades Basic scale-1 (BS) to BS-16 will receive a liberal 12 percent raise in salaries. However, officers in BS-17 to BS-22 are set to get a slightly lower, yet respectable, 10 percent hike in salaries.

Details from the provincial budget suggest that retirees will see an 8 percent spike in their pensions. In addition, CM Sindh confirmed that from the start of the upcoming fiscal year, Sindh Assembly members’ salaries will be aligned with those of lawmakers in other provinces.

According to CM Sindh, certain taxes and levies would be reduced under the newly introduced Finance Bill. The aforementioned duties include professional tax, cotton fees, entertainment duty, drainage cess, and local cess, which will all be abolished. For reference, the term ‘cess’ refers to a type of tax imposed by the government for a specific purpose and remains in effect until sufficient funds are collected for that purpose.

As per data from reports, approximately 75 percent of the revenue will come from federal transfers. Sindh anticipates total receipts of Rs3.41 trillion in FY 2025-26, which translates into a rise of 11.6 percent compared to the outgoing fiscal year.

Reports reveal that transfers from the federal divisible pool alone are projected at Rs1.927 trillion, indicating a rise of 10.2 percent from FY 2024-25. Additional federal funds are expected to push receipts from Islamabad up to Rs2.095 trillion. These additional funds are to be expected in the form of transfers and compensatory grants for the abolished Octroi and Zila Tax (OZT).

Current revenue expenditure is expected to reportedly reach Rs2.149 trillion. This marks a 12.4 percent increase on a Year-on-year basis. The education sector has received an allocation of Rs523.7 billion, compared to Rs458.2 billion last year. This accounts for 25.3 percent of the total current revenue expenditure.

All tiers of the education sector have witnessed a boost in their budget. As per reports, Rs156.2 billion will be allocated to primary education, which is a stark increase from FY 2024-25’s outlay of Rs136.2 billion.

  • VIDEO: Talha Anjum loses it during concert, again

VIDEO: Talha Anjum loses it during concert, again

Pakistani rapper Talha Anjum is once again making headlines for his on-stage outburst after a video from his recent performance at Expo Center Lahore went viral.

The clip shows the rapper calling out an audience member who allegedly threw a bottle at him during the show, and the situation quickly turned physical.

In the viral video, Talha is seen saying, “There was a brother here who threw a bottle on stage as if he was sending me his sister’s proposal. I have only one thing to say to him: if you have the courage, come closer to the stage and propose properly.”

He then pointed at the individual in the crowd and said, “He’s hiding at the back, come here, son.”

As the man approached the stage, a member of Talha’s security team grabbed him by the hair and pulled him away.

He then emotionally addressed the audience, saying, “I swear to God, I’m not that kind of person. Now, put yourself in my shoes. I came here to perform for you… And if I’m disrespected, should I stay silent?”

The video has sparked a storm on social media, with users divided over Talha’s behaviour.

One user commented, “I support this behaviour; artists deserve respect.” Another called the moment “satisfying,” and added, “Why even go to his concert if you’re just going to disrespect him?”

However, not everyone agreed. A critic wrote, “He’s an artist he should behave properly. This is why bottles get thrown at him.” Another added, “Every concert turns into this kind of drama. Talha bhai should learn to stay in control.”

Some also felt the incident reflected poorly on Pakistan’s concert culture. One user stated, “It’s not just about the artist; this kind of reaction sets a bad example.”

This isn’t the first time Talha Anjum has faced trouble during a live performance.

Previously, Talha made headlines after a similar confrontation at a concert in Islamabad. A fan had thrown water bottles at him during his performance, prompting Talha to stop mid-set and say: “Come on stage and throw that bottle at my face.”

Though clearly frustrated, he still performed one final track, saying the incident had “ruined his mood,” but he didn’t want to disappoint his real fans.

  • Everyone’s turn will come if Muslim world doesn’t unite: Kh Asif

Everyone’s turn will come if Muslim world doesn’t unite: Kh Asif

With the Middle East crisis deepening since after Israel’s deadly strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory action, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has cautioned that the Muslim world could face dire consequences in absence of unity against aggressors.

“If the Muslim world does not unite and [every country] keeps on protecting its own interests, everyone’s turn will come,” he said while speaking during a session of the National Assembly (NA) on Saturday, referring to Israel’s crimes against Palestine, Yemen and Iran.

He said that most Muslim countries were “militarily vulnerable” and those who had sophisticated weapons and equipment “lacked the motivation to fight”.

Underscoring Islamabad’s longstanding ties with Tehran, the defence minister went on to express solidarity with the country as the Israeli operation continues to target Iranian commanders, nuclear scientists and defence infrastructure.

The minister also alleged that Israel was “not alone” and had been “provided all sorts of cover” to target Iran’s nuclear facilities. “But we will protect Iran’s interests at the international level in whatever way they need. Iranians are our brothers and neighbours… their sorrow and joy, their pain and happiness is ours.”

Asif also said that Israel was committing atrocities against Palestinians and was responsible for the destruction of Palestine. “Israel’s hands are stained with the blood of Palestinians… the way children have been martyred and oppressed in Palestine has not triggered a strong enough response from the Islamic world. It is the conscience of non-Muslims that is awakening, but not that of Muslims,” he added.

Asif also called for a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Council (OIC) so that Muslim countries can “formulate a joint strategy to confront Israel’s illegitimate actions”.

Separately, he went on to criticise incarcerated former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan and ex-army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, accusing them of “undermining national dignity” by returning captured Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Abhinandan Varthaman to India following the 2019 stand-off.

IAF’s Wing Commander Abhinandan was six years ago captured by Pakistan after his MiG 21 Bison aircraft was shot down by a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) jet. Then-premier Khan, after consulting with the military leadership, had decided to return him to India soon after.

  • Petrol prices expected to rise

    Petrol prices expected to rise

Prices for petroleum products are expected to rise for the next two weeks by approximately Re1 to Rs5 per litre. Reports cite a spike in international oil prices as the primary factor behind the projected increase in domestic petroleum products’ prices.

Escalating tensions between Iran and Israel have led to an eight percent jump in the price of oil. Analysts fear that Israel could target Iran’s oil facilities, resulting in subdued production levels.

Reports indicate that Iran pumps out 3.3 million barrels per day, exporting over 60 percent of its total production. Moreover, the war could spread to the Strait of Hormuz, which witnesses the transport of 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, including exports from non-belligerent countries such as Kuwait, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The aforementioned developments are expected to push the ex-depot price of petrol by Re1 per litre in the domestic market. Moreover, high-speed diesel (HSD) prices may witness a more liberal rise, with analysts predicting an increase of Rs5 per litre.

The ex-depot price of petrol is projected to rise to Rs253.63 after the increase. Similarly, HSD prices are expected to rise too, coming to settle at Rs259.64 per litre.

It merits a mention that these are estimates, and the true magnitude of changes in fuel prices will only be revealed once the relevant authorities make a decision.

Aside from the base price of the fuel itself, Islamabad charges approximately Rs78 per litre petroleum development levy (PDL) on high octane and petrol. However, the PDL on HSD sits at a slightly lower Rs77.01 per litre.

The federal government extracts an additional Rs16 per litre from the sale of petroleum products by levying customs duty on petrol and HSD. Put together, the PDL and customs duty raise the federal government’s revenues to Rs94 per litre from petrol and HSD sales.

A rise in HSD rates could detrimentally impact the transport sector, given the sector’s reliance upon HSD. The rise in HSD prices is likely to stifle economic activity across various sectors.

For instance, the transportation sector has diesel as a primary input and thus requires vast quantities of the commodity. With a rise in HSD prices, these businesses could witness a rise in operational costs and, ultimately, a drop in profit margins.

As per analysts, bus fares tend to be sticky when diesel rates drop after an increase. As such, future drops in the price of diesel might not result in a proportional decrease in fares.

  • Pizza spike near Pentagon predicted Iran-Israel strike hours before it happened

Pizza spike near Pentagon predicted Iran-Israel strike hours before it happened

When Iran launched drones and missiles at Israel on April 13, 2024, an unusual activity was tracked thousands of miles away in Washington, D.C.

Pizza orders across the Pentagon skyrocketed at 6:59 PM ET, an increase detected by open-source intelligence monitors.

The X account Pentagon Pizza Report, known for monitoring delivery traffic around key U.S. security buildings, posted a real-time alert stating that nearly all pizza outlets near the Pentagon were unusually busy.

An hour later, Iranian state media reported explosions in Tehran, confirming what the pizza orders had correctly predicted: crisis mode was activated.

A nearby gay bar, which is usually packed on Thursday nights, was unusually vacant, according to the same witness.

For followers of this niche intelligence stream, the pattern was clear: officials weren’t out, they were inside government buildings, likely pulled into emergency meetings.

This phenomenon, which is often referred to as the “Pizza Meter,” has an odd but historically accurate reputation for predicting geopolitical emergencies.

The origins of this method stretch back to the Cold War, when Soviet intelligence officers reportedly tracked pizza deliveries to U.S. government offices as a proxy for military activity.

Based on the idea that pizza becomes the fuel of choice for high-level decision-makers who work overnight, the word “Pizzint,” which is short for “Pizza Intelligence,” was created to describe this strategy.

Far from being internet satire, the Pizza Meter has a record. A viral Instagram video recently broke down how spikes in Pentagon-area pizza deliveries have preceded more than 20 global crises over the last 35 years.

The video traced a timeline starting from the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada, the 1989 Panama Operation, and the CIA’s infamous 21-pizza order prior to Iraq’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

Similar patterns were noted prior to Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the U.S. airstrikes in Syria in 2017, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The same video highlighted the April 2024 Iranian attack on Israel, followed by the May 2025 Israeli airstrikes on Iran, both events flagged by noticeable spikes in pizza activity around the Pentagon.

Modern-day OSINT analysts rely on Google Maps and delivery applications to monitor real-time foot traffic and restaurant activities.

The digital footprint that display “busier than usual” signs at nearby Domino’s and Papa John’s have been used to identify when national security officials may be operating in an emergency.

The April 2024 spike was backed by crowdsourced posts from Reddit and X, showing high traffic across multiple delivery platforms in the Pentagon area just before the attack became public.

The Pizza Meter serves as an example of how ordinary data can provide extraordinary insights into world events.

It offers real-time crisis detection skills that complement conventional intelligence techniques, though not being infallible.

For citizens monitoring international tensions, tracking these patterns offers a unique window into government response levels during developing crises.

As geopolitics becomes increasingly digitised, unconventional indicators like the Pizza Meter may evolve into standardised early-warning systems – but only if rigorously validated against traditional methods and protected from manipulation.

  • ‘Extremely shameful’: Modi govt shamed for withholding vote on UN resolution for Gaza ceasefire

‘Extremely shameful’: Modi govt shamed for withholding vote on UN resolution for Gaza ceasefire

The Indian National Congress (INC) has trained guns at, and shamed, the Modi-led government for abstaining from voting on a United Nations (UN) resolution seeking ceasefire in Gaza as New Delhi was among the 19 countries that withheld vote on the critical issue.

As per the details, 149 countries supported the resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire earlier this week, whereas 12 countries voted against it. Among the 19 countries that abstained from voting was India, which drew strong reactions from opposition’s Congress and the general public alike.

In a post on X, the INC called India’s abstention “extremely shameful” and accused the government of abandoning its moral responsibility. The party said that India, once known for its principled support for Palestine, had now bowed to Tel Aviv’s pressure, reducing the country’s historic legacy to “rubble”.

“India has always stood for peace, justice, and human dignity. But today, as over 60,000 lives have been lost in Palestine, most of them women and children, India has chosen silence. Thousands are starving, international aid has stopped, and a humanitarian tragedy is unfolding. Yet, India stayed neutral when it should have stood for justice,” the statement read.

The party said that Modi’s government had failed to uphold the values that once made India a global moral voice.

Congress reminded the government that real leadership comes from speaking up with courage, not “staying silent during injustice”. “Global leadership is not built on silence. If we want India’s voice to matter, we must show courage and conscience.”

Earlier, Congress leader KC Venugopal also criticised the Modi government for isolating India on global forums. “India stands alone in South Asia, BRICS and SCO on this issue. A humanitarian catastrophe is happening in Gaza and we chose to look away,” he said.

On June 12, the UNGA adopted a permanent ceasefire resolution to stop the violence in Gaza. But India, shockingly, did not vote in favour despite its past record of supporting Palestine as a matter of principle.

As of now, over 60,000 people have been killed in the Gaza genocide, most of them women and children.

  • Humayun Saeed plans half-price cinema tickets after Love Guru’s big success

Humayun Saeed plans half-price cinema tickets after Love Guru’s big success

Pakistani superstar and producer Humayun Saeed has hinted at reducing cinema ticket prices after the box office success of his latest film Love Guru.

Speaking to news media alongside senior actor Mustafa Qureshi and Karachi Press Club President Fazil Jamili, Humayun Saeed discussed the challenges faced by the local film industry including the lack of cinema screens and high ticket prices that stop many people from going to the movies.

“Making a film in Pakistan is a challenge because the investment is high and the returns are uncertain,” he said.

When asked about making cinema more accessible, he shared, “If the film’s box office business keeps going strong, I plan to offer half-price tickets for the general public so more people can enjoy it in cinemas.”

He also opened up about his nervousness during the film’s early days. “In the beginning, I was anxious and stayed home,” he revealed. “But the film’s success gave me the confidence to come out and be among the public.”

  • Four inmates sentenced to death for raping, killing prisoner inside Adiala Jail

Four inmates sentenced to death for raping, killing prisoner inside Adiala Jail

Four inmates under-trial have been given death sentences for the rape and killing of a fellow prisoner on the night of January 1, 2024, within Adiala Jail.

The verdict was announced by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Afshah Ijaz Suri, who found Mohammad Waqas, Asif Khan, Naqash Raza alias Amir Raza, and Bilal Hussain guilty of sexually assaulting and killing 26-year-old Sabieel in the jail’s specialized AIDS ward.

Each convict was awarded the death penalty under Section 375(A) of the Pakistan Penal Code for sodomy, along with a fine of Rs200,000.

They were also ordered to pay Rs500,000 each in compensation to the victim’s family.

Under Section 302(b) PPC (murder with common intention), they received a second death sentence (Tazir).

Sabieel and his attackers were among nine prisoners confined within a single cell in the specialized AIDS ward at the time of the attack.

Around midnight, when Sabieel was having trouble breathing, inmates alerted staff, according to the jail superintendent’s FIR.

After receiving medication from a dispenser, he was discovered unconscious the following morning and was pronounced deceased at the jail hospital. Assault marks were discovered around his neck.

Based on the witness testimonies, the investigation found that the convicts strangled Sabieel with a piece of cloth after tying his limbs and raping him in turns.

One prisoner alleged that Waqas pressed his foot against Sabieel’s throat and chest.

The incident took place in Cell No. 2 (Chakki #10), where nine prisoners had been held despite the cell’s low capacity.

The case has brought attention to the extreme overcrowding at Adiala Jail, which is capable of holding 2,200 inmates but currently holds over 7,000.

In response, seven jail officials, including Assistant Superintendent Operations Ulfat Hussain, were suspended.

The construction of a new district jail has also been approved by the Punjab government, and construction is reportedly now under progress.

Judge Suri ordered that all case property be confiscated and destroyed following the appeals process. Sabieel’s last-worn clothes will be returned to his family.

The convicts remain in police custody and have seven days to challenge the verdict in a higher court.

The sentences are subject to mandatory confirmation by the Lahore High Court.
