Salim was trying to convince me for many years to get married: Mahira Khan

Superstar Mahira Khan has shared that her husband Salim Karim had been persuading her to get married for several years before the two finally tied the knot.

Mahira appeared on Nida Yasir’s Eid morning show alongside the cast of the film Love Guru. During the episode, she opened up about her personal life, emotions, and romantic nature.

“I don’t hide my emotions,” Mahira said. “I’m an expressive woman. I can’t keep anything hidden for long.”

“I’m a romantic person in real life too, and I don’t delay when it comes to expressing my feelings,” she added.

In response to a question, she revealed, “Salim had been persuading me for many years to get married,” although she didn’t specify exactly how long.

Speaking about her husband, she shared, “He’s a shy person. He doesn’t like being in front of the camera, which is why he’s rarely seen with me at programs or events.”

She recalled one instance during a trip: “Once, when we went to London together, everyone recognized me and kept saying, ‘That’s Mahira Saleem Karim.’ After that, he stopped attending events with me.”

Mahira smiled as she added, “After our wedding videos went viral, people memorized his face. Now everyone recognizes him easily, but he’s not used to the spotlight.”

Wishing her husband were more emotionally expressive, she said, “I wish he was romantic, emotional, and quick to express his feelings like I am.”

She also mentioned that this was her second Eid-ul-Adha after marriage and noted, “There haven’t been many changes in my life after getting married.”

Mahira Khan married businessman Salim Karim in October 2023. This is her second marriage. She was previously married to Ali Askari in 2007. The couple had a son, Azlan, before parting ways in 2015 after eight years of marriage.

‘Her own mistake’: Journalist victim blames Sana Yousaf for getting murdered

Journalist Naeem Hanif on Saturday appeared to victim-blame 17-year-old social media influencer Sana Yousaf, who was shot dead in Islamabad on June 2 by a man whose proposals she repeatedly rejected.

“Suspect [Kaka] is a social media expert and Sana Yousaf had been getting help from him for the past six to eight months to promote her social media accounts,” Hanif claimed in a podcast on YouTube channel RNN TV.

The journalist further said that as Hayat was assisting in promoting Sana’s social media account, they exchanged phone numbers.

He then said that Sana was killed by her “own mistake” provided that she was sharing locations on TikTok continuously. He added that when the suspect confessed his love to Sana, she then decided to get rid of him.

Additionally, Hanif said that on Sana’s birthday (May 29), the suspect reached Islamabad to contact her; however, she did not give any attention to him.

“When you are posting every second of your location on TikTok, then your location is not secret,” the journalist opined.

Omar Hayat aka Kaka, 22,  murdered 17-year-old Sana Yousaf at her house in G-13. He was arrested from Faisalabad within 20 hours of the incident. The victim’s mobile phone and the murder weapon were also recovered from his possession.

“The ruthless killer took the phone with him after the murder to destroy evidence. In order to apprehend the accused, raids were conducted at over 11 locations in three cities. The accused is a 22-year-old unemployed man who repeatedly attempted to contact the victim. Upon her refusal to respond, he committed the murder,” said Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi during a presser on June 3.

He added that the killer had tried to reach out to Sana at least seven to eight times.

The police chief stated that Sana repeatedly rejected the boy’s offers to become friends. She also rejected his marriage proposals.

“On May 29, which was Sana’s birthday, he tried contacting her. He tried for seven to eight hours to get in touch with her, including going to her home,” the IG said.

Ali Nasir Rizvi gave out other details of the murder, including that Sana was killed by two gunshots around 5 pm on June 2. The gun that killed her and her iPhone were recovered by the police from Kaka’s possession.

Sana Mir creates history with ICC Hall of Fame induction alongside Dhoni, Amla, other greats

Former Pakistan women’s cricket team captain Sana Mir has made history as the first female cricketer from the country to be inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame.

As per the details, Mir was among the seven new inductees unveiled by West Indies legend Ian Bishop at a ceremony ahead of the World Test Championship final. She was inducted alongside India’s MS Dhoni, England’s Sarah Taylor, South Africa’s Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith, Australia’s Matthew Hayden and New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori.

The former off-spinning all-rounder, who represented Pakistan for around 15 years from 2005-2019, set numerous records during her career, and has now joined an elite group of just 14 women and a total of eight Pakistanis who have received the honour.

She remains Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in women’s ODIs with 151 scalps and was the first Asian woman to play 100 T20 internationals. As captain for eight years, Mir led Pakistan to two Asian Games gold medals (2010 and 2014) and guided the team in five T20 World Cups and two ODI World Cups.

Her leadership produced landmark moments including Pakistan’s first ODI victory against South Africa and qualification for the 2017 World Cup Super Sixes where her 5/14 against Scotland proved decisive. Mir retired as one of Pakistan’s most decorated athletes in 2019.

“From dreaming as a little girl that one day there would even be a women’s team in our country to now standing here, inducted among the very legends I idolised long before I ever held a bat or a ball — this is a moment I couldn’t have dared to imagine,” ICC quoted her as saying.

“I am incredibly grateful for this honour and hope to give back to the sport in any way I can. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my teammates, coaches and family for all their support over the years,” she said.

It may be noted that the seven other Pakistani cricketers in the Hall of Fame are Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Javed Miandad, Abdul Qadir, Zaheer Abbas, Waqar Younis and Hanif Mohammad.

‘Too old to dance’: Mahira, Humayun hilariously respond to mean brutal trolls

Actors Mahira Khan and Humayun Saeed have responded to online criticism in the most entertaining and graceful way, winning the hearts of their fans during promotion for their new movie Love Guru.

The duo appeared on various platforms during the promotional campaign of the film, turning every moment into viral content. Their interviews and video clips have been making rounds on social media, especially one where they read out negative comments and respond with laughter and charm.

One user commented, “Is burhapy mein in dono se dance karwana zulm hai [It’s cruel to make them dance at this old age.]”

Mahira burst into laughter and even partially agreed while Humayun responded with a witty comeback, “There is a lot of passion, so we will continue to dance — and the real fun is in dancing at this age!”

Mahira went on to add that actual cruelty was making them dance in the heat.

Another troll targeted the film’s visual quality, saying that the cast looked just like they do in real life, implying poor lighting or production. To this, Humayun shot back, “By the way, this time everyone is saying that we all look fresh, it seems like a lot of money has been spent on production. Perhaps the commenter has watched some other film.”

A particularly harsh comment targeted Mahira, saying, “This old woman’s actions never end.” In response, Humayun joked, “They can’t end, they have been ingrained since childhood!” Mahira, laughing along, added, “Yes! It’s not possible for the actions to end!”

Love Guru, which is screening across the country, is receiving mixed reviews with some calling the film a mere money-making venture and others praising it.

At least 10 killed in separate road accidents nationwide

At least 10 people lost their lives and dozens were injured in separate road accidents that occurred in different cities on Sunday, including in Ghotki, Dera Ismail Khan, Layyah and Chichawatni.

According to details, four people were killed and two others injured when a car veered off the road and plunged into a ditch while coming from Dera Ismail Khan’s Al Markalan village.

Rescue officials confirmed that among the dead were two brothers and a child, adding that the bodies of the deceased, and the injured, had been shifted to a local hospital for medico-legal formalities and treatment.

Separately, in a tragic incident, three people were killed and over eight others injured when a speeding truck overturned on Motorway M-5 near Ghotki in Sindh.

Motorway Police said the deceased and injured were all from Muzaffargarh’s Alipur Jatoi area, adding that animals being transported in the truck were also injured in the incident.

  • Significant price hike likely for cars under 850cc: reports

Significant price hike likely for cars under 850cc: reports

The federal government has decided to revisit a proposal to increase the sales tax on smaller, locally assembled cars. Reports indicate a possible imposition of taxes on vehicles with engine capacities of up to 850cc.

These claims come despite Islamabad scrapping the idea just last week. According to a report, insiders familiar with the ongoing budget planning have stated that the earlier decision to hold off on the tax hike has been overturned and that the revised rates are being prepared for inclusion in this year’s Finance Bill.

If passed, the new rates on the aforementioned vehicle type could fall anywhere between 15 and 18 percent. This marks a steep increase from the current sales tax rate these vehicles are subjected to, a relatively conservative 10 to 12.5 percent.

Reports suggest that lawmakers need to boost revenue levels during fiscal year (FY) 2025-26. With the budget for FY 2025–26 looming, officials are under mounting pressure to find new cash flows. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) wants Islamabad to increase revenues, as it has asked the federal government to incorporate agricultural income tax into provincial budgets, along with the expectation that provincial governments will observe austerity measures.

Raising taxes on small cars has remained unpopular, as it erodes the purchasing power of households that aren’t wealthy. Details for reports highlight that historically, small engine vehicles have been subjected to lower tax rates, keeping them within reach for working-class and middle-income households.

This spells bad news for domestic automobile assemblers as well, as a spike in taxes is likely to translate into higher car prices, which could reduce sales volumes. Sales volumes only recovered as inflation rates normalised in the outgoing FY, coupled with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) cutting interest rates to a conservative 11 percent. However, sales may tank upon the implementation of a tax hike.

If approved, the higher sales tax on small cars may lock a large segment of potential buyers out of the market for cars. Higher costs might potentially even cause some buyers to abandon purchasing a car altogether if prices rise significantly.

However, it merits a mention that a formal announcement is yet to be made. Buyers may scramble to place purchase orders before the announcement of the budget to avoid bearing higher sales tax rate.

  • Budget session approved for Jun 10

Budget session approved for Jun 10

The Speaker of the National Assembly (NA), Ayaz Sadiq, has approved the federal budget schedule, confirming that the budget’s presentation will take place on Tuesday, June 10. According to details shared by the NA Secretariat, the assembly will not meet on June 11 or 12, giving lawmakers time to go through the proposed budget.

Reports reveal that Khurram Schehzad, adviser to the finance minister, announced that the Pakistan Economic Survey will come out on Monday, June 9. Following the release of the survey, a full debate on the budget will start in the NA from June 13. Reports indicate that parties represented in the assembly will be allotted time according to the rules to present their viewpoints and concerns during the discussion.

According to the NA Secretariat’s statement issued on Sunday, the debate will continue until June 21, with no session on June 22, and will reconvene on June 23 to review the necessary expenditures for the fiscal year 2025–26. Reports suggest that votes and debates on proposed cuts and grants will be held on June 24 and 25.

The Finance Bill will reportedly reach its final stage on June 26, with discussions and a vote. The assembly will then move on to other matters, on June 27, going over matters including “supplementary grants”. Any alterations to this timetable, however, will only be allowed if permitted by the speaker himself.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stated that his administration’s main objective in the budget is to offer relief to ordinary citizens. Alongside that, job opportunities, agricultural growth, housing, support for small and medium enterprises, and advancement in IT have been outlined as high-priority areas.

In similar budget-related developments, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal recently highlighted that the development budget would be around Rs1 trillion. He also gave a clear indication that the government may raise defence spending in the upcoming financial year.

Analysts will watch the budget sessions closely, as decisions made in the coming weeks will shape the macroeconomic landscape in the country. Latest data from the IMF suggests that government expenditure accounted for approximately 19.24 percent of GDP. If the federal government decides to boost expenditures in the upcoming budget, Pakistan’s GDP value will rise.

As per the details, the Saudi crown prince hosted a luncheon in honour of Muslim leaders visiting the Kingdom for Hajj, which was also attended by NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori.

Mohammad Bin Salman expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges being faced by the Muslim world.

The speaker, during his interaction with the crown prince, said that Saudi Arabia had always stood by Pakistan during difficult times, adding that the country was grateful for the clear stance of the Kingdom’s leadership on matters concerning Pakistan.

Sadiq expressed hope that bilateral ties between the brotherly nations would be further enhanced.

  • Deemak spooks audiences with record-breaking opening

Deemak spooks audiences with record-breaking opening

Pakistan’s biggest horror film Deemak has achieved remarkable success in its first week of release, setting a new milestone in the history of the country’s cinema.

The film, created in collaboration with Geo Films, has reportedly already grossed over an estimated Rs60 million and continues to dominate the box office amid overwhelming audience appreciation.

Viewers are praising the film for its gripping storyline, suspenseful sequences, terrifying visuals and use of cutting-edge technology. “The story, suspense, scary scenes and use of modern technology make Deemak completely unique from other horror films,” said one viewer in a social media post.

Written by Syed Murad Ali and directed by Rafay Rashdi and Ayesha Muzaffar, the film combines horror and thrill with powerful commentary on social issues.

At its core, Deemak doesn’t just aim to scare but it also sheds light on emotional trauma, generational neglect, domestic abuse, denial and the complex dynamics between women in a household, particularly the strained relationship between a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. Set against the backdrop of a haunting, the film uses horror as a metaphor for internal decay exploring how unresolved emotional wounds and suppressed tensions can slowly destroy families from within.

Deemak features Faisal Qureshi and Sonia Hussain in lead roles, supported by legendary actors Samina Pirzada, Javed Sheikh, Bushra Ansari and other artists.

  • Israel detains Greta Thunberg, 11 others as Gaza aid boat seized

Israel detains Greta Thunberg, 11 others as Gaza aid boat seized

Israel intercepted a Gaza-bound aid boat on Monday morning, preventing the activists onboard, including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, from reaching the blockaded Palestinian territory.

The Madleen, Freedom Flotilla Coalition aid ship, departed from Italy on June 1 aiming to bring awareness to food shortages in Gaza, which the United Nations has called the “hungriest place on Earth”. After 21 months of war, the UN has warned the territory’s entire population is at risk of famine.

AFP lost contact with the Madleen early Monday morning.

At around 3:02 am CET (0102 GMT), Israeli forces “forcibly intercepted” the vessel in international waters as it was approaching Gaza, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said in a statement.

“If you see this video we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters,” Thunberg said in a pre-recorded video shared by the coalition.

The Palestinian group Hamas condemned the diversion, saying in a statement the boat was being taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

The Israeli government had vowed to prevent the “unauthorised” ship from breaching the naval blockade of Gaza, urging it to turn back.

On Sunday, Defence Minister Israel Katz said the blockade, in place since years before the Israel-led genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, was needed to prevent Palestinian militants from importing weapons.

After diverting the boat, Israel’s foreign ministry posted a picture of the activists all in orange life jackets being offered water and sandwiches.

“All the passengers of the ‘selfie yacht’ are safe and unharmed,” the ministry wrote on social media, adding that it expected the activists to return to their home countries.

“The tiny amount of aid that was on the yacht and not consumed by the ‘celebrities’ will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels,” it added.

Israel is facing mounting international pressure to allow more aid into Gaza to alleviate widespread shortages of food and basic supplies.

It recently allowed humanitarian deliveries to resume after barring them for more than two months and began working with the newly formed, US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

But humanitarian agencies have criticised the GHF and the United Nations refuses to work with it, citing concerns over its practices and neutrality.

Dozens of people have been killed near GHF distribution points since late May, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency.

It said Israeli attacks killed at least 10 people on Sunday, including five civilians hit by gunfire near an aid distribution centre.

    ‘Risked their lives’ for food

Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal and witnesses said the civilians had been heading to a site west of Rafah, in southern Gaza, run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Witness Abdallah Nour al-Din told AFP that “people started gathering in the Al-Alam area of Rafah” in the early morning.

“After about an hour and a half, hundreds moved toward the site and the army opened fire,” he said.

The Israeli military said it fired on people who “continued advancing in a way that endangered the soldiers” despite warnings.

The GHF said in a statement there had been no incidents “at any of our three sites” on Sunday.

Outside Nasser Hospital, where the emergency workers brought the casualties, AFPTV footage showed mourners crying over blood-stained body bags.

“I can’t see you like this,” said Lin al-Daghma by her father’s body.

She spoke of the struggle to access food aid after the two-months Israeli blockade, despite the recent easing.

At a charity kitchen in Gaza City, displaced Palestinian Umm Ghassan told AFP she had been unable to collect aid from a GHF site “because there were so many people, and there was a lot of shooting. I was afraid to go in, but there were people who risked their lives for their children and families”.
