Game of Thrones star joins Greta Thunberg on aid ship sailing to Gaza

Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), an international group, has said that one of its boats left the Italian port of Catania on Sunday, heading to Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. This follows a previous attempt that was stopped after another flotilla was attacked by drones in the Mediterranean.

The volunteer crew includes climate activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham, who played Davos Seaworth role in Game of Thrones. They are traveling on the ship Madleen, carrying barrels of what the group called “limited amounts, though symbolic,” of relief supplies.

Earlier, another FFC boat called the Conscience was hit by two drones near Malta in early May. FFC blamed Israel for the attack.

Greta Thunberg spoke before the trip, saying, “We are doing this because no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity.”

She also added, “No matter how dangerous this mission is, it is nowhere near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the lives being genocided.”

FFC said the trip “is not charity. This is a non-violent, direct action to challenge Israel’s illegal siege and escalating war crimes.”

The United Nations said on Friday that the situation in Gaza is the worst since October 7, 2023, even though some limited aid deliveries have started again. Israel ended an 11-week blockade on Gaza and allowed some UN-led aid operations to continue.

On Monday, Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began work. It is supported by the United States and Israel. However, the UN and many international aid groups refuse to work with it, saying it is not neutral and its aid distribution forces some Palestinians to move.

  • Heinrich Klaasen retires from international cricket at 33

Heinrich Klaasen retires from international cricket at 33

South African cricketer Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a memorable seven-year journey with the Proteas.

After retiring from red-ball cricket in 2024., the 33-year-old shared the news on Monday, saying he will no longer play white-ball cricket for South Africa.

Klaasen said it wasn’t an easy decision, but one he made after careful thought about his future and his family.

“It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what was best for my family and me in the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

He wrote, “From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country, and it was everything that I had worked for and dreamed about as a young boy. I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life. Playing for the Proteas gave me the opportunity to meet great people who changed my life, and to those people, I can’t say thank you enough. My road to wearing the Proteas shirt was different than most, and certain coaches in my career kept believing in me. To them, I will always be grateful.”

“To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career. I look forward to spending more time with my family, as this decision will allow me to do so. I will always be a big Proteas supporter and would like to thank everyone who supported me and my teammates during my career.” he added.

Many in the South African cricket community praised Klaasen for his contributions. Director of National Teams and High-Performance Enoch Nkwe said Klaasen had the power to change the game quickly and always gave his best to the team.

“Heinrich has been a true match-winner for South Africa. He was a player capable of changing the course of a game in a matter of overs,” said Nkwe. “His commitment and impact in the white-ball formats have been immense, and we thank him for his outstanding service to South African cricket.”

Cricket South Africa CEO Pholetsi Moseki also thanked Klaasen for being a great role model.

“Heinrich has been a fantastic ambassador for South African cricket, both on and off the field. His performances in the green and gold have brought joy to many South Africans, and his legacy will undoubtedly inspire the next generation,” said Moseki.

Heinrich Klaasen made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2018. He played 60 ODIs and scored over 2,000 runs, with an average close to 44. One of his most memorable performances was a stunning 174-run knock against Australia in 2023, which became the second-highest score by a number-five batter in ODI history.

In T20 Internationals, he played 58 matches and had a strike rate of 141.84. Klaasen was known for his aggressive batting and his ability to dominate spin bowlers. His fearless style made him a key player in South Africa’s white-ball teams throughout his career.

Man who assaulted biker in Karachi on the run as police register case, conduct raids for arrest

Karachi police have arrested two employees of Salman Farooqi after a viral video showed a young motorcyclist being assaulted in the Defence Phase 6 area.

According to reports, the incident occurred in Khayaban-e-Ittehad, Defence Phase 6, Karachi, where Farooqi, reportedly the CEO of a private company, was travelling in a luxury car. A minor collision between his vehicle and a motorcycle led to the motorcyclist being beaten. In the video, a woman, reportedly the motorcyclist’s sister, can be seen pleading for mercy as Farooqi continues to physically abuse her brother in public.

After the video went viral, Darakhshan Police arrested Farooqi’s driver and security guard and seized the vehicle involved. However, Salman Farooqi himself remains at large. Police say he turned off his phone and fled after the video circulated online. Law enforcement teams were sent to his home and office late at night, but he could not be found.

DIG South confirmed that Farooqi has not been identified as a government employee. “No one is above the law, and the victim will get justice,” said the DIG, adding that efforts are underway to contact the affected family and that a First Information Report (FIR) is being registered.

SSP South Mehzor Ali stated that although police have not yet heard directly from the motorcyclist, they are trying to locate him. “Once we are in contact with the victim, we will formally register the case and proceed with legal action,” he said.

Police presence has been increased outside Farooqi’s office while the investigation continues. Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar has taken notice of the incident and requested an immediate report.

  • Indian YouTuber arrested for derogatory remarks against Turkish women offers apology

Indian YouTuber arrested for derogatory remarks against Turkish women offers apology

Days after Indian YouTuber Malik Swashbuckler was reportedly arrested for passing derogatory remarks and rape jokes at Turkish women, posted a video on his Instagram account on Monday, offering an apology.

As per media reports, the Indian content creator’s derogatory remarks against Turkish women in his videos kicked off a storm among Turkish people when multiple clips circulated online.

In one of the clips, Swashbuckler can be heard asking a shopkeeper whether he has Indian flags on display while entering a Turkish store. After the shopkeeper said he didn’t, the influencer used foul language against the shopkeeper in Hindi.

In another video, he termed a Turkish woman “maal” while speaking in Hindi, so that the target of his offensive remarks could not understand what he was saying. However, some Turkish social media users, who understood what was being said in the videos, flagged the videos.

Swashbuckler has taken down all videos from his YouTube and Instagram accounts in the aftermath of the controversy. However, clips from the videos are still circulating online.

In the video statement, Malik said his remarks were for “fun and comedy”.

“I was just making videos for fun, making vlogs. I was doing it only for comedy. I didn’t know something like this would happen. I had no idea it would turn into something bad, and I don’t even understand how it happened. I only recorded it with the intention of being funny. I’m truly sorry to all of you, especially to the women in the video and my friends in the video. I was only making a funny video with you, and you know I told you that we would be recording something funny,” he said.

The Indian YouTuber further said that his videos were not intended to insult Turkish women, reiterating that he made the remarks for fun.

“This will never happen again in my life, not anywhere. I will never be disrespectful again. I apologize to all of Turkey, to the Turkish nation.”

“I could never do such a thing intentionally. I want to change my life. Please forgive me. I apologize to President Erdoğan, to the entire Turkish nation, and to the Turkish people. I am deeply sorry,” he concluded.

  • Ukraine drones strike deep in Russian territory on eve of new talks

Ukraine drones strike deep in Russian territory on eve of new talks

Ukraine said Sunday that its drones destroyed Russian bombers worth billions of dollars as far away as Siberia in its longest-range assault of the war, as it geared up for talks on prospects for a ceasefire.

In a spectacular claim, Ukraine said it damaged $7 billion worth of Russian aircraft parked at four airbases thousands of kilometres across the border, with unverified video footage showing aircraft engulfed in flames and black smoke.

A source in the Ukrainian security services (SBU) said the strikes hit 41 planes that were used to “bomb Ukrainian villages”.

The drones were concealed in the ceilings of transportation containers that were opened remotely for the assault, the source added.

    Ceasefire talks

The long-planned operation came at a delicate moment three years into Russia’s invasion.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that he was sending a delegation to Istanbul led by his Defence Minister Rustem Umerov for talks on Monday with Russian officials.

Turkey is hosting the meeting, which was spurred by US President Donald Trump’s push for a quick deal to end the three-year war.

Zelensky, who previously voiced scepticism about whether Russia was serious in proposing Monday’s meeting, said priorities included “a complete and unconditional ceasefire” and the return of prisoners and abducted children.

Russia, which has rejected previous ceasefire requests, said it had formulated its own peace terms but refused to divulge them in advance.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart Marco Rubio spoke by telephone Sunday about “several initiatives aimed at a political solution to the Ukraine crisis”, including Monday’s talks, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement carried by the TASS news agency.

    ‘Spider’s Web’

Zelensky on Sunday hailed “brilliant” results of the coordinated attack, code-named “Spider’s Web”, which he said had used 117 drones and was the country’s “most long-range operation” in more than three years of war.

Russia’s defence ministry confirmed on Telegram that several of its military aircraft “caught fire”, adding that there were no casualties.

Rybar, an account on the Telegram message platform that is close to the Russian military, called it a “very heavy blow” for Moscow and pointed to what it called “serious errors” by Russian intelligence.

The SBU source said the strikes targeted Russian airbases in the eastern Siberian city of Belaya, in Olenya, in the Arctic near Finland, and in Ivanovo and Dyagilevo, both east of Moscow.

The operation was prepared for over a year and a half, the SBU source said, and aimed to destroy “enemy bombers far from the front”.

Zelensky said one of the targeted locations was right next to one of the offices of the FSB Russian security services.

    ‘First such strike on Siberia’

Russia said it had arrested several suspects, including the driver of a truck from which a drone had taken off, state agencies said.

But Zelensky said people involved in preparing the attacks were “extracted from Russian territory in time”.

Igor Kobzev, governor of Russia’s Irkutsk region, which hosts the Belaya airbase, said it was “the first attack of this sort in Siberia”.

He called on the population not to panic and posted an amateur video apparently showing a drone in the sky and a large cloud of grey smoke.

    Russia drone strikes

Russia has been announcing Ukrainian drone attacks on a near-daily basis, usually saying they had all been shot down.

At the same time, Russia has been carrying out constant attacks on Ukraine.

On Sunday, Ukraine’s air force said it was hit by 472 Russian drones and seven missiles overnight, a record number since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022.

In a rare admission of its military losses, the Ukrainian army said Russia’s “missile strike on the location of one of the training units” had killed a dozen soldiers, most of whom had been in shelters during the attack, and wounded more than 60.

The attack led Ukrainian ground forces commander Mykhailo Drapaty to announce his resignation, saying he felt “responsibility” for the soldiers’ deaths.

Separately on Sunday, the Russian army said it had captured another village in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, where Kyiv fears Moscow could mount a renewed ground assault.

  • ACC postpones Women’s Emerging Asia Cup

ACC postpones Women’s Emerging Asia Cup

The Women’s Emerging Asia Cup, scheduled to begin on 3 June in Sri Lanka, has been quietly postponed, amid ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India.

While no formal statement had been made earlier by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), it was widely believed that the lack of Indian interest played a key role in the postponement. However, on June 2, 2025, the ACC officially confirmed that the tournament had been rescheduled.

According to an ACC press release, the decision was made following a letter from Shammi Silva, President of Sri Lanka Cricket, to ACC President Mohsin Raza Naqvi. The letter cited adverse weather conditions in Sri Lanka and health concerns due to the spread of the chikungunya virus as reasons for seeking a postponement.

“The ACC is committed to providing opportunities for young women cricketers to develop their skills and compete at the highest level,” said Mohsin Raza Naqvi. He added that the ACC understands the strategic significance of the tournament and will work to reschedule it at the earliest possible date.

Recently, PCB official Salman Naseer met with ACC officials in Dubai to discuss tournament arrangements. Meanwhile, sources say the ACC’s next major challenge is organising the Men’s Asia Cup in September, which is scheduled to be hosted by India.

So far, the ACC has not announced new dates for the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup but has assured that all stakeholders, including teams and commercial partners, will be updated soon.

  • Squid Game’s final season trailer is out and it looks more intense than ever

Squid Game’s final season trailer is out and it looks more intense than ever

The trailer for Squid Game Season 3 is out, and it looks intense. The final season is coming to Netflix on June 27, and it picks up right where Season 2 ended. Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) is still trying to fight back against the people behind the deadly game, but things haven’t gone well as he’s lost almost everything.

Team X or Team O? Red light or green light? The choices are harder and deadlier than ever.

According to the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, Season 3 will explore what Gi-hun does after all his efforts have failed. The trailer shows a more broken, more emotional Gi-hun full of guilt, regret, and pain. But can he still rise again and fight back with humanity, kindness, and courage? That’s the big question.

Squid Game, however, would be incomplete without the terrifying new challenges. The creepy doll Young-hee is back, and there are new life-threatening games that look even scarier. The pink guards are still as ruthless as ever, and Gi-hun’s enemies are closing in.

The Front Man is back, too. In fact, things might finally get personal between him and Gi-hun. In one scene from the trailer, we see the Front Man take off his mask and say, “Player 456, do you still have faith in people?” Could this mean a face-to-face showdown is coming?

Actor Lee Byung-hun, who plays the Front Man, says fans “won’t be disappointed.” With the drama building up over two seasons, it looks like Season 3 will be explosive.

  • Glenn Maxwell bids farewell to ODI cricket

Glenn Maxwell bids farewell to ODI cricket

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his immediate retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), confirming he will now focus solely on the T20 format for Australia.

The 36-year-old revealed his decision during an in-depth interview on the Final Word Podcast, citing the physical demands of 50-over cricket and a serious leg injury sustained in 2022 as key reasons for stepping away from the format.

“I just felt like my physical condition was starting to let the team down,” Maxwell explained. “I told the selectors that I’m not looking at the 2027 World Cup. It’s better to give younger players a chance to prepare for that position.”

He added that he didn’t want to occupy a spot in the squad without merit. “I never wanted to sit in my place if I wasn’t capable of performing. I didn’t want to be selfish and hang around for just a few more series.”

Maxwell’s ODI career concludes with 149 matches, 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81, and 77 wickets. His strike rate of 126.70 is the second-highest in history among batters who have scored over 2,000 ODI runs.

One of the iconic moments of his career was during the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan, when he single-handedly rescued Australia from 91 for 7 with an unbeaten 201, despite battling severe cramps and effectively batting on one leg. It was not only Australia’s first-ever double century in ODIs but also the first double hundred ever scored in a run chase.

Maxwell is expected to continue playing T20 Internationals at least until the 2026 T20 World Cup.

  • ‘I don’t need anyone’s permission to live my life’; Alizeh Shah will not bow down to trolls

‘I don’t need anyone’s permission to live my life’; Alizeh Shah will not bow down to trolls

Actress Alizeh Shah has boldly responded to trolls who were criticising her dresses, saying that she has never needed public approval for her style and doesn’t seek anyone’s permission.

In a statement shared on Instagram, she said, “I have been wearing sleeveless dresses, shorts, and skirts since childhood. My mother never forced me to follow a certain way of dressing or stick to outdated traditions. She gave me love, not limits. This is part of my personality not a new behaviour.”

Alizeh Shah went on to say that the backlash isn’t really about clothes but about a mindset that seeks to control women.

“This is not just about how I dress this is about a mentality that wants to keep women confined,” she said. “I am not here to meet anyone’s standards. Whatever I’ve achieved is through my own hard work, and I do not need anyone’s permission to live my life.”

She also addressed those who issue religious judgments against others, “Those who issue fatwas on others should first reflect on their own actions.”

In a heartfelt appeal to her critics, Alizeh quoted verse 256 from Surah Al-Baqarah: “There is no compulsion in religion.”

She concluded by saying, “If you think it’s wrong for women to act or appear online, then watching those dramas and videos is also wrong. Islam teaches us self-accountability before judging others. Every individual is accountable to Allah not to public opinion.”
