    Onijah Andrew Robinson, the American woman who made headlines after being stranded in Pakistan for four months, is once again in the spotlight.

    The United States (US) citizen had travelled to Pakistan in pursuit of love but was shockingly left alone by Nidal Ahmed Memon, a young man from Karachi’s Garden area. After making headlines for months over her refusal to return to her country, she was finally sent back in February 2025.

    Months later, Onijah has made a surprising claim, insisting that the very man who abandoned her is still her husband.

    A viral video showed Onijah, who was reportedly stuck in Dubai for another month after leaving Pakistan, finally back in the US.

    “I’m glad to be back in New York. I’m happy about that. That’s all I have to say right now,” she said in the video.

    When asked if she was still in contact with anyone from Pakistan, she confidently replied, “Yes, I am [in contact] with my husband. He lives in Pakistan. I love you, baby. We are together.”

    Clarifying that she was referring to Nidal Ahmed, Onijah dismissed any speculation about being involved with someone else. She also said that she met him online and later went on a romantic date.

    Regarding a possible return to Pakistan, she responded vaguely, “We’re going to discuss that. But right now, we’re all staying in New York.”

    During her stay in Pakistan, Onijah sparked controversy by demanding $3,000 per week for her expenses. In the latest video, she made another bizarre claim about what her Pakistani “in-laws” had to offer. “They’re saying they’re going to give [me] land, they’re gonna give $20K, $50K straight.”

    “They were gonna give me $100K every week, but I left. So, we’re gonna see what they gonna work on while I’m not there.”

    The 33-year-old American woman’s story first went viral when she travelled from New York to Karachi to marry Nidal Ahmed, only for him to back out under family pressure—leaving her stranded in a foreign country.

    She arrived in Karachi on October 11, 2024, on a 30-day tourist visa. After overstaying, she was unable to leave Pakistan.

    Without a valid ticket, Airport Security Force (ASF) officials barred her from entering the airport. Eventually, after Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori intervened, arrangements were made for a new visa, a return ticket, and permission for her exit.

    However, when she was cleared for departure, Onijah unexpectedly refused to board the flight, accusing the airline staff of forcing her to leave.

    Adding to the bizarre series of events, she was later admitted to Jinnah Hospital’s psychiatric ward after her health reportedly deteriorated. Around the same time, her son, Jeremiah Robinson, posted a video from the US claiming that Onijah was bipolar.

    Eventually, after persuasion from US Consulate staff in Karachi, she agreed to return to the US.

    Even after everything that happened, Onijah insists her relationship with Nidal Ahmed is intact.

    IMF launches second diagnostic mission to address corruption in Pakistan

    The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has initiated proceedings to conduct its second ‘Corruption and Diagnostic Mission’ in the country.

    According to reports, the international lender intends to address issues that have plagued the country since its inception, over which, an IMF delegation will remain in discussions with domestic authorities till April 14.

    These meetings will go over multiple state departments and entities, reportedly including the Supreme Court’s accountability and registrar court.

    The IMF delegation is slated to engage with approximately 30 departments to improve governance, launch a crackdown against money laundering and to tackle Pakistan’s chronic corruption problem.

    The fight against the aforementioned issues can be conducted by focusing on improving financial oversight, analysts say, outlining the IMF’s keen interest in Pakistan’s corruption and governance problems.

    Reports reveal that the international lender is on a routine follow up visit to ensure that everything is running smoothly and in line with the objectives discussed in February as well.

    The delegation aims to write a report along with policy recommendations that could allow for Pakistan to reshape its governance mechanisms. Given Pakistan’s longstanding issues with money laundering and rampant corruption, many believe that the IMF’s advice would be for the country to tackle these problems.

    In 2024, Pakistan scored an abysmal 27 points on the corruption perceptions index. For reference, the index ranges from 0 to 100 with a score of 0 indicating rampant corruption and 100 reflecting the complete absence of corruption from institutions.

    According to data, Pakistan ranks as the 135th most corrupt country in the world. This helps explain the IMF’s interest in reforming the country’s systems to pave way for a fairer and more transparent system. Earlier, the IMF also intended on exploring the possible economic effects of these vulnerabilities in their assessment, which could be included in the final report.

    Moreover, the IMF’s persistent focus on money laundering is warranted as well. This is because as per the Basel Anti-Money Laundering Index (AML) index, that aims to assess the risk of money laundering and related financial crimes on a country-by-country basis, Pakistan has a fairly high risk score of 5.56 points.  

    For reference, a score of 10 indicates extreme vulnerability to such practices. With Pakistan’s score being less than envious, the IMF intends to ensure that the incidence of such financial crimes is reduced.

    Govt moves to cut circular debt amid power tariff relief

    The federal government remains locked in negotiations with commercial banks in a bid to reduce the power sector’s Rs2.4 trillion power circular debt, it has emerged.

    In discussions with the press, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Legahri announced that these discussions could unlock loans worth Rs1.34 trillion rupees, which would create some fiscal breathing room. He further said that agreements would only be finalised after commercial banks submit their term sheets.

    According to credible reports, this could allow for a staggering Rs300-335 billion reduction in the power sector’s circular debt.

    Authorities have revealed that the aforementioned loans will be financed via the debt servicing surcharge of Rs3.23 per unit. While the agreement stands under the current administration, reports have highlighted how repayments towards these loans will continue even if political power changes hands in the future.

    While the new loans will result in the aforementioned payments, lawmakers in Islamabad intend to reduce the financial strain on users of the national grid.

    Recently, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif slashed the power rate for residential and industrial zones by 12 percent and 13 percent, respectively, and Leghari has hinted at further cuts in electricity tariffs.

    As per reports, the fall in tariffs could be revised downward in June 2025, when tariffs are rebased. However, the minister has outlined how changes in fuel prices will have to be borne by consumers via fuel cost adjustment (FCA) charges.

    According to Leghari, a rise in interest rates or a fall in the value of the rupee could cause the quarterly tariff adjustment (QTA) to change. Moreover, if the procurement of fuel becomes expensive or if global energy prices rise, the FCA charges are likely to change.

    Aside from the aforementioned factors, reports suggest that a fall in hydropower generation could also be reflected within the FCA. Given how this news could have rattled users of the national grid, as many could believe that the recent reduction in electricity prices might be revoked in the future, he proclaimed that the recent slash in power rates was based on “solid and sustainable” factors.

    There is merit to his claim as the federal government has made great efforts in the recent past to end unfavorable contracts with independent power producers (IPPs). Moreover, Islamabad has also tacked on an additional Rs10 per liter petroleum development levy that, coupled with termination of contracts with IPPs, has allowed for a Rs4 per unit price reduction.

    All-rounder Khushdil Shah lost his temper after being subjected to sarcastic remarks from fans following Pakistan’s defeat by New Zealand in the third and final ODI of the series, giving the Kiwis a clean sweep. 

    The match, held at Mount Maunganui, saw New Zealand defeat Pakistan, completing a 3-0 series victory. After the game, fans targeted Pakistani players, criticizing their poor performance, which led to Khushdil Shah becoming visibly angry. In response, he advanced towards the fans, clearly upset, but was restrained by security personnel and fellow players who intervened to diffuse the situation.

    Viral images of the incident prompted Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to issue a statement condemning the inappropriate behaviour of foreign fans. 

    A PCB spokesperson expressed disapproval, stating that the foreign fans had used offensive language towards Pakistani players during the match. The spokesperson clarified that Khushdil Shah confronted the fans, asking them to stop their insults.

    However, the situation escalated when Afghan fans, responding to the confrontation, used even more offensive language in Pashto. The tension intensified when two Afghan fans attempted to engage with Khushdil Shah physically. As a result, following a complaint from the Pakistani team, the two foreign fans were escorted out of the stadium.

    The return of Fawad Khan, Pakistan’s superstar, to Bollywood has sparked debate in India. The actor is set to star in the romantic comedy Abir Gulaal alongside Vaani Kapoor, scheduled for release on 9 May 2025. However, ahead of its debut, the film is facing fierce opposition from political figures and industry leaders, particularly in Maharashtra.

    Veteran filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, also the President of the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA), has voiced strong opposition to Fawad’s casting. He told IANS that the entire nation would react negatively to the return of the Pakistani actor. He expressed disappointment with the Indian film industry for continuing to work with Pakistani artists despite an unofficial ban following the 2016 Uri attack. Pandit questioned the notion of “art having no boundaries”, stating that there should be accountability when it comes to showing solidarity with the nation.

    Pandit further added, “Which Pakistani artist has ever spoken out after an attack on Indian soldiers or civilians?” He warned that releasing the film could stir public anger and lead to mass protests.

    The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has also strongly opposed the film’s release in the state. They have vowed to block the movie, with a leader daring the filmmakers to release it. Similarly, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam criticised the popularity of Pakistani artists, saying that Indian audiences avoid watching Pakistani films and actors despite their curiosity. He stated, “There is widespread hatred for Pakistan in India,” adding that Pakistani artists should work within their own film industry.

    Fawad Khan, who has starred in Bollywood hits like Khoobsurat (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), was absent from Indian cinema following political tensions after the Uri attack, which led to a ban on Pakistani artists. While a petition to formally ban Pakistani artists was dismissed by the Bombay High Court in 2023, the industry still follows an unwritten rule avoiding Pakistani talent.

    LHC rules in favor of woman’s inheritance claim after 27 years

    The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ruled in favour of Sadiqan Begum, a woman from Toba Tek Singh, allowing her to reclaim her rightful share of her father’s inheritance, after nearly 27 years of being wrongly deprived of her share with the help of a fraudulent gift mutation.

    Justice Khalid Ishaq of the LHC overturned earlier decisions made by the trial and appellate courts, which had sided with Sadiqan Begum’s brother, Muhammad Siddique, in a dispute over the inheritance. The conflict stemmed from an oral gift mutation made in 1998, which the court found to be fraudulent.

    The property in question, which measures 59 kanals and 18 marlas, was owned by Muhammad Ibrahim, the father of Sadiqan Begum and Muhammad Siddique. After his death on October 8, 1998, Sadiqan, who was uneducated and from a rural background, trusted her brother’s word that the inheritance had been properly shared and she had received her fair share of the estate.

    However, years later, when Sadiqan wanted to sell her share of the land to support her children after her husband’s death, she was told she had no legal claim to the property. Upon investigation, she found that her brother had executed a fraudulent gift mutation in his favour without her knowledge or consent.

    In court, Sadiqan’s brother defended the gift mutation, claiming that their father had given him the property through an oral agreement before his death and that the mutation was approved in a public gathering. He also stated that he had been in possession of the land since then.

    However, Justice Ishaq rejected his claims, finding them to be unsupported by evidence. He criticized the common practice of using oral gifts to defraud heirs, particularly women. “This case highlights a recurring pattern in which women are denied their rightful inheritance through false claims of oral gifts,” Justice Ishaq said in his ruling.
