Lucknow woman hangs herself after husband’s derogatory remark

A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow in India died by suicide after her husband made derogatory remarks about her in front of her sister, police said. The incident took place on Wednesday in the Takrohi area of Indira Nagar.

The deceased has been identified as Tannu Singh, an aspiring model who had been married to her husband for the past four years. Her husband, an auto-rickshaw driver, reportedly passed the remark during what he described as a joking exchange.

Indira Nagar Station House Officer (SHO) Sunil Tiwari confirmed the incident, stating that the woman was allegedly called a “monkey” by her husband. Police said no written complaint has so far been submitted at the station.

According to the husband, the incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when he, his wife, their son, and his sister-in-law Anjali were at home. During light-hearted banter, he allegedly mocked Tannu, following which she became upset and quietly left the room.

Shortly afterward, the husband stepped out to bring food. Upon returning, he asked Anjali to call Tannu. When repeated calls went unanswered, Anjali went to the room and found it locked from inside. Looking through a window, she saw her sister hanging from the ceiling.

Hearing her screams, neighbours and family members rushed to the spot and brought Tannu down from the noose. She was immediately taken to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

A post-mortem examination later confirmed hanging as the cause of death. Police said further legal action would be decided after reviewing the post-mortem report and recording statements from family members.

  • ‘Lets finish them’; Muslim Kashmiri shawl hawkers attacked in Uttarakhand

‘Lets finish them’; Muslim Kashmiri shawl hawkers attacked in Uttarakhand

Indian police have arrested a man in connection with an assault on two Kashmiri shawl sellers from illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir in Uttarakhand’s Vikas Nagar area, following an incident in which one of the victims said the attackers referred to their religious identity.

In a video statement posted on X, Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajay Singh said the main suspect, identified as Sanjay Yadav, had been taken into custody and that further investigation was underway.

The victims, brothers Danish Ganai and Tabish Rashid, are residents of Kupwara district in Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Ganai has been travelling to Uttarakhand during the winter season for the past three to four years to sell Kashmiri shawls. This year, Rashid joined him after insisting on contributing to the family’s income.

According to Rashid, the assault occurred on Wednesday evening after the brothers returned from Poanta Saheb in Himachal Pradesh, where they had been selling shawls earlier in the day. While heading back to their accommodation, they stopped at a shop on the outskirts of Vikas Nagar to eat.

Rashid said the shopkeeper objected to them speaking in Kashmiri and told them that Uttarakhand was not Kashmir. “The shopkeeper initially took offence because we were speaking in the Kashmiri language. He said that Uttarakhand is not Kashmir. Then he pushed me and asked us to leave,” he said.

As they stood up, the shopkeeper allegedly picked up their sack containing shawls and other belongings and threw it onto the road. Rashid said the brothers protested, telling him they had done nothing wrong. “We told him we had not committed any mistake to deserve this humiliation,” he said.

The dispute then moved outside the shop, where Rashid alleged the shopkeeper took out a baton and began beating his brother. When Rashid attempted to intervene, another man arrived carrying an iron rod.

“He was speaking as if being a Muslim and a Kashmiri was a crime,” Rashid said. He added that the man pushed him aside and struck him on the head with the iron rod, causing him to lose consciousness.

Before passing out, Rashid said he heard the assailant tell the shopkeeper: “They are Muslims. Let’s finish one first and deal with the other later.”

Mohd Shafiq, another resident of Kupwara who has been assisting the brothers in Uttarakhand, confirmed that the two men were assaulted by the shopkeeper and his associate. He said several local Hindu men and women intervened during the incident and stopped the attack.

Rashid sustained injuries, including a fracture in his arm, while Ganai suffered wounds to his leg.

Rashid said he regained consciousness at a hospital, where he was surrounded by other Kashmiri shawl sellers and local residents. He later learnt that a Hindu woman who witnessed the incident testified that the brothers were not at fault.

Police at Vikas Nagar registered a case under Sections 117(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, against two persons. Rashid said cash amounting to nearly Rs 21,000, along with their shawls and other belongings, was missing after the assault. “There were 47 shawls worth several thousands in the sack,” he said.

He said his father had arrived in Uttarakhand and would decide the next course of action. “We have been attacked today, it will be someone else’s turn tomorrow,” Rashid said.

  • Taxila police register FIR against ‘jinns’

Taxila police register FIR against ‘jinns’

Police in Taxila have registered a highly unusual First Information Report (FIR) in a child abduction case, naming jinns as the alleged kidnappers, triggering confusion and criticism.

The case has drawn attention for its bizarre nature, with observers questioning how supernatural entities could be accused in a criminal investigation. Legal experts and citizens have raised concerns over the implications for policing standards and the credibility of legal procedures.

“Even if the child is recovered, how will the accused be produced before court?” legal expert Raja Tahir questioned.

Police later clarified that the complaint stemmed from the child’s father’s strong belief in supernatural explanations. Officials said his superstitious views shaped the narrative of the report, giving it the tone of a paranormal account.

They stressed that the FIR was registered to formally document the complaint rather than endorse the claim of jinn involvement. According to the police, the unusual wording reflected the complainant’s beliefs rather than an official investigative conclusion.

Influencer fined $12,800 for giving homeless man rice mixed with chicken bones

A Malaysian court has fined 23-year-old social media influencer Tang Sie Luk RM40,000 ($12,800) for filming and posting an offensive video showing teenage boys giving a homeless man rice mixed with chicken bones.

Tang pleaded guilty to knowingly creating and uploading extremely offensive content with the intent to cause annoyance under Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, according to foreign media reports.

Judge Sazlina Safie also ordered a four-month prison term if Tang failed to pay the fine. He paid the fine immediately after the verdict.

    Instagram Post

The video was first uploaded to the Chinese social media platform Douyin on August 3, 2025, before spreading rapidly to Instagram, where it went viral and drew strong public condemnation.

The video begins with a voiceover stating, “Today we are going to do a kind deed.” It then shows three teenage boys eating fried chicken from a KFC box before saying it would be “a waste” to throw the bones away. They packed the chicken bones with rice and claimed they planned to donate the food.

The boys later handed the food scraps to a homeless man along Jalan Wong Ah Fook in Johor Bahru while recording the interaction.

During mitigation, Tang, who represented himself, requested a minimum fine, expressing remorse and apologising for his actions. He admitted to uploading the video, which was over a minute long.

However, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission deputy public prosecutor Fadhi Ab Wahab urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, saying the act caused real harm to the victim.

“The victim has also said he felt insulted and angry by the accused’s actions. This was not an act of charity. It was a calculated act of exploitation, using human suffering to create social media content for entertainment and public attention,” he told the court.

PIMS executive director reveals details of Imran Khan’s eye procedure

An eye procedure performed on incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan was completed without complications, and he remained stable throughout, the executive director of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Professor Dr Rana Imran Sikander has confirmed.

Speaking early Friday, the hospital chief said the treatment lasted around 20 minutes and was carried out smoothly, days after Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed that Khan had been taken to a hospital in Islamabad for an eye-related medical procedure late on January 24.

“It [the procedure] was completed smoothly in approximately 20 minutes. During the treatment, the patient remained vitally stable and was discharged with routine post-procedure care instructions and follow-up advice and documents,” said Sikander.

The clarification from PIMS comes a day after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) moved the Supreme Court of Pakistan, requesting the apex court’s assistance in arranging a meeting between the party’s founder and his personal doctors through the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).

Dr Sikander said the 74-year-old former premier had complained of “reduced vision in his right eye”, prompting a thorough evaluation by a “qualified ophthalmologist” from PIMS, who conducted a “complete eye assessment at Adiala jail”.

According to the hospital head, the medical team carried out “strict lab examination, [ocular] endoscopy, intraocular pressure measurement, essential laboratory tests and OCT of the retina” as part of the assessment.

He added that the findings led to a diagnosis of right central vein occlusion, after which hospital-based treatment was advised.

“Accordingly, Mr Niazi was brought to PIMS on the night of last Saturday, Sunday for the advised procedure.”

Dr Sikander said that upon arrival at the hospital, the former prime minister was briefed in detail about the procedure.

“Informed consent was obtained from the patient prior to the procedure. The procedure was carried out in the operation theatre under standard sterile protocol and monitoring,” said Dr Sikander.

  • Ali Tareen eyes return to Multan Sultans: reports

Ali Tareen eyes return to Multan Sultans: reports

Former Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has decided to re-enter the bidding process for the Multan franchise ahead of an upcoming auction of Pakistan Super League (PSL).

According to the reports, Ali Tareen has formally submitted the required documents to take part in the bidding for Multan Sultans, marking a possible return to the franchise he once owned.

Tareen announced his departure from Multan Sultans on November 25, 2025, following public disputes with the PSL authorities.  The situation escalated when the PSL board issued a notice to the franchise, which Tareen tore up on video and shared online with mocking remarks.

Earlier, he had ruled out retaining the franchise and instead showed interest in bidding for the league’s two new teams. However, he withdrew from that process at the final stage saying if he returned to the PSL, it would be for South Punjab.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to auction the Multan franchise on February 8 or 9.

Earlier reports had suggested that PCB might run Multan Sultans for the upcoming season, but after the successful auction of two new teams, the board reportedly decided to auction Multan Sultans as well.

On January 8, the PCB auctioned two new teams for PSL 11 at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad. The Kingsmen Group secured the Hyderabad franchise for PKR 1.75 billion, while OZ Developers acquired the Sialkot franchise for a record PKR 1.85 billion.

With the addition of Hyderabad and Sialkot, the eleventh edition of the PSL will feature eight teams for the first time. Multan will complete the expanded lineup alongside the existing franchises.

Ahead of the new season, the PCB has also announced a major change to the league’s player recruitment process. The board has replaced the decade-old draft system with an auction model, starting from PSL 11.

HBL PSL 11 will begin on March 26 and run until May 3, 2026. The tournament will also expand its city footprint, with Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium set to host PSL matches for the first time, bringing top-tier cricket back to the city.

  • PM announces slashing electricity tariffs to ease business costs

PM announces slashing electricity tariffs to ease business costs

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced a Rs4.4 per unit reduction in electricity tariffs for industries, along with a Rs9 cut in wheeling charges, as part of government efforts to ease rising energy costs for businesses and strengthen export-oriented sectors.

The premier made the announcement while addressing a ceremony in honour of leading businessmen and exporters, attended by Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers, entrepreneurs and exporters, in Islamabad.

PM Shehbaz said the relief in power tariffs was aimed at lowering the cost of doing business and enabling industries to compete more effectively in international markets. As part of broader support for exporters, he also announced a reduction in the tax rate for exporters from 7.5% to 4.5%.

Addressing the gathering, the PM said all future economic policies would be framed in close consultation with the business community, stressing that export-led growth remained the only viable path for economic recovery.

He reiterated that the government did not believe in running businesses itself and that the private sector must lead economic activity, with the state providing a stable and predictable business environment.

Earlier, awards were distributed among exporters who made significant contributions to the national economy, with the premier personally presenting honours to prominent business figures from across the country. He also announced that traders receiving awards would be granted blue passports.

The PM praised exporters for performing strongly despite difficult economic conditions and said Pakistan’s exports had recorded a notable increase in 2025.

Referring to the broader economic situation, PM Shehbaz said the country had faced severe financial challenges amid speculation about default and bankruptcy when his government assumed office. He said inflation was gradually declining and policy rate had fallen from 22% to around 10.5%.

He also directed State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmed to engage closely with business leaders and to listen to their concerns, reiterating that economic policies would be finalised after structured consultations with traders and exporters.

  • ‘Senior journalists with fake reports think they can lecture others’: Azma Bukhari hits out at Hamid Mir

‘Senior journalists with fake reports think they can lecture others’: Azma Bukhari hits out at Hamid Mir

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has hit out at senior journalist Hamid Mir after he criticised the provincial government over the handling of the Lahore manhole tragedy from Wednesday night.

As per the details, the information minister was reacting to a viral video of Mir wherein he accused the Punjab government of spreading false information and attempting to shift blame in the aftermath of the incident.

Referring to official statements, Mir said government and police sources, particularly the Punjab info minister, initially declared the incident as “fake news”.

“On one hand, the media reported that a woman and her child had fallen into an open manhole and rescue teams were searching for them. On the other, government and police sources kept calling it fake news.”

He said the situation only changed after the bodies were recovered hours later.

“First, the woman’s body was found. A few hours later, the body of her nine-month-old daughter was recovered. If this had not happened, the entire blame would have been placed on the poor husband,” he said, adding that police would have made him admit that he killed his wife and daughter, and disposed of the bodies.

Criticising the provincial leadership, Mir also said the government repeatedly claimed it had turned Punjab into a model province.

“The chief minister frequently criticises other provinces, and the information minister not only attacks other provinces but also targets journalists she dislikes, accusing them of spreading fake news,” he said, adding that Bukhari had in this case made false claims herself.

It merits a mention that Mir was referring to initial statements by Bukhari among other government officials who either rejected the manhole story as fake or hinted at foul play involving the husband of the victim.

While CM Maryam Nawaz said that Bukhari was not at fault as she only shared information relayed by the administration that was attempting to hide its own negligence, the information minister hit out at Mir in an X post, sharing screenshots of his past reports that were later fact-checked and rejected.

“Senior and well-known journalists whose countless reports turned out to be fake and who never even felt ashamed still think they can lecture others,” she wrote.

Sharing Mir’s video, the information minister also went on to challenge him to present any evidence regarding his allegations.

“I rarely appear on talk shows, and most of my interviews are one-on-one. When did I commit this injustice? Please tell me?” she added in response to another claim by Mir who accused the minister of “only sitting with certain journalists and targeting others who decline invitations”.

It may be noted that public apologies over false claims regarding the incident have already been issued, and action has been initiated against officials who were responsible for it.
