‘Right people for right positions’: Afridi says Mohsin Naqvi should seek advice from cricketing experts

Former Pakistan cricket team captain Shahid Afridi has advised Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi to appoint the right people in the right positions.

Speaking on a TV show with Nadeem Malik after Pakistan’s home defeat to New Zealand, he said, “Mohsin Naqvi should consult his seniors or experienced individuals who understand international cricket and focus on building the system. You don’t need too many people for advice—five, six, or ten are enough.”

“For example, when Mohammad Yousuf joined, he made a plan outlining what he would do in the next four to six months. But the main point remains—the right person should be in the right position,” he added.

Pakistan suffered a loss to New Zealand in the opening match of the Champions Trophy on February 19 at National Stadium, Karachi.

Following this defeat, the Pakistan cricket team and the selection committee have faced criticism from fans and former cricketers.

Earlier, Pakistan also lost two matches in the tri-nation series against New Zealand at the same venue.

    PAK vs NZ match summary

New Zealand started their ICC Champions Trophy campaign with a commanding 60-run victory over Pakistan in the opening match of the tournament at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi.

Chasing a target of 321 runs, Pakistan’s batting lineup faltered predictably, with the team getting bowled out for 260 runs. Khushdil Shah was the top scorer with 69 runs, while Babar Azam contributed 64 runs.

Salman Agha added 42, Fakhar Zaman scored 24, and Haris Rauf chipped in with 19 runs. Shaheen Shah Afridi added 14, Naseem Shah 13, Saud Shakeel 6, Captain Mohammad Rizwan 3 and Tayyab Tahir scored one run.

New Zealand’s Will O’Rourke and captain Mitchell Santner took three wickets each. Matt Henry claimed two wickets, while Michael Bracewell and Nathan Smith picked up one wicket each.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand posted a solid total of 320/5 in their 50 overs after being invited to bat first. However, their innings did not begin smoothly, as they lost three wickets for just 73 runs. Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell were dismissed for 10 runs each, while captain Kane Williamson fell for just one run.

New Zealand stabilized their innings with a crucial 118-run partnership between Will Young and Tom Latham. Young played a brilliant knock of 107 runs before getting out.

Following Young’s dismissal, Latham and Glenn Phillips added another 125 runs to strengthen New Zealand’s total. Phillips was dismissed in the 49.4th over after scoring 61 runs, while Latham remained unbeaten on 118.

For Pakistan, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah took two wickets each, while Abrar Ahmed claimed one.

  • VIDEO: ‘Shahbaz Gill stole Imran Khan’s phones, handed them over to Faiz Hamid’

VIDEO: ‘Shahbaz Gill stole Imran Khan’s phones, handed them over to Faiz Hamid’

Sher Afzal Marwat, who was recently expelled from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has accused Shahbaz Gill, a former special assistant to prime minister (SAPM) and close ally of party founder Imran Khan, of stealing the former PM’s mobile phones and handing them over to ex-spymaster General (r) Faiz Hamid.

The former PTI leader was referring to the incident of theft first reported in May 2022 when, interestingly, Gill had told media that Khan’s mobile phones were stolen during the party’s Sialkot rally soon after Khan’s ouster from government.

“When an investigation was launched into Khan’s missing phones, an investigation team claimed that Shahbaz Gill, who was his chief of staff at the time, stole the phones and handed them over to Faiz,” Marwat said in conversation with a private media outlet.

He claimed that after learning about the theft, Khan removed Gill from the post and never met him again.

When the talk-show host contested Marwat’s claim, clarifying that these were just “accusations”, the former PTI leader said that Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza as well as PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja were witnesses of the same, including Khan’s directives to remove Gill from the party’s political committee.

“Khan sent a message to him [Shahbaz Gill] two and a half months ago… either focus on vlogging or remain in the political committee,” Marwat revealed, adding that Gill was accustomed to disclosing all the committee’s secret conversations through his vlogs.

He went on to claim that Khan ordered Gill’s removal after he refused to abandon vlogging, but no action was taken. “Raja retained Gill in the PTI core and political committees.”

Reacting to the claims, Gill mocked the TV host and Marwat, calling the latter a “clown”.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gill shared the video clip from the talk show and wrote, “General Faiz [former ISI chief] is with your masters, take both phones. Keep one for yourself […] and yes, make sure to get their chargers from General Faiz’s house. Otherwise, you’ll be begging for it from the workers.”

It merits a mention that Marwat has been making headlines since after being expelled from the PTI. “Further to the Show Cause Notice issued to Mr Sher Afzal Marwat and his subsequent reply, the party has considered his reply and also his actions subject to the Show Cause notice,” read a party notification.

Reacting to the expulsion, Marwat had expressed deep disappointment, emphasising his unwavering loyalty to PTI and Imran Khan’s leadership.

He said that the decision appeared to be influenced by individuals who never accepted him within the party but reassured his supporters that he had never been involved in personal disputes or internal factionalism.

Instead, he always stood by the vision of Khan, prioritising the party’s unity over personal conflicts. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by Imran Khan, including limited access to information and the presence of certain individuals whose actions were detrimental to the party’s interests.

Despite this, Marwat said, he was hopeful that the party’s workers, who had stood by him, would continue to support justice in the future.

In a firm stance, he said that while he would accept PTI’s decision with dignity if the party did not reconsider, he would never beg for mercy. He strongly urged PTI leaders and workers to speak up against injustice and to remain united, particularly when facing difficult times.

Fans can’t keep calm as Hania Aamir, Diljit Dosanjh tease possible collab for ‘Sardar Ji 3’

The alleged unexpected team-up between Indian singer Diljit Dosanjh and Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in the much-awaited Sardar Ji 3 has social media buzzing.

As per the details, it started when both celebrities posted Instagram stories with the same picturesque scene, leading to speculations that a collaboration might be in the works.

“What’s cooking?” wrote one user. Another wondered if Hania and Diljit were collaborating for a film or song.

Amid speculations and excitement to see the two celebrities working together, Hania was spotted with crew of Sardaar Ji 3.

Directed by Rohit Jugraj, the third installment of Diljit’s adored horror-comedy is expected to release in June this year. In line with the franchise’s distinctive aesthetic, the movie is expected to have an ideal fusion of humor, horror and adventure.

Even though there hasn’t yet been an official confirmation or rebuttal to reports claiming Hania will be a part of the film, fans cannot keep calm at the idea of a collaboration between two of South Asia’s most prominent celebrities.

It merits a mention that Pakistan’s Hania and India’s Diljit both enjoy massive fan following across borders. Will the rumoured collaboration establish new standards for cross-border entertainment interactions? Only time will tell.

The reports come months after Hania was also spotted at a Diljit concert in London late last year. And while fans had interesting reactions to Hania being there, Diljit also made sure to make the evening a special one for the Pakistani actor.

The singer and actor invited Hania on stage and performed his song Lover for her. Later, Hania took to Instagram giving a sneak peek into the night, and wrote, “Hona ni mai recover, [I will not recover from this]. What a night. It was magic. The love, the respect, the soul. Impeccable. It was all heart. Diljit dosanjh sir ek he dil hai kitni dafa jeeto get. [Diljit Dosanjh, I just have one heart, how many times will you win it]. The entire team is just wonderful. An honour to have come across so many beautiful souls. Truly memorable. Thank you for all your love and warmth.”

While Hania had her sweet and memorable moment with Diljit, her fans had an interesting reaction. Referring to her character’s plight in the recent hit drama serial ‘Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum’, a fan commented, “Your husband Mustafa has no money to survive, and Sharjeena [Hania’s character] you are attending this concert. What is this behaviour?”

Gordon Ramsey says Pakistan has ‘some of the best food’

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey is notoriously hard to please. So when the world’s most famous chef says Pakistan has “some of the best food” in the world, you better believe that our cuisine has arrived on the global map.

Maryam Ishtiaq, a participant on Next Level Chef, has shared a video of Gordon and herself interacting on the show on her Instagram.

She tells Ramsey that she’s making tandoori chicken and then adds that she has a Pakistani background.

“Pakistan, beautiful. And some of the best food in Pakistan,” Ramsey replies to her while tasting a cream and chilli concoction that she’s making.

Later in the clip, Gordon Ramsey and another judge try Maryam’s tandoori chicken. A female judge praises the “home-made yogurt” for freshness while Ramsey says, “The chicken is delicious. That Pakistani foundation you grew up with is evident here and it’s strong. Well done.”

Maryam shared the clip on her Instagram account with the caption: “Spoiler When @gordangram says Pakistan has some of the best food, you better believe it! We are going to the drafts baby!!”

  • Controversy erupts as govt approves renaming Arbab Niaz stadium to Imran Khan Cricket Stadium

Controversy erupts as govt approves renaming Arbab Niaz stadium to Imran Khan Cricket Stadium

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has approved the renaming of the historic Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium in Peshawar. The stadium, located in Shahi Bagh, is set to be renamed as ‘Imran Khan Cricket Stadium.’ Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet is expected to approve the renaming today (Friday).

The decision has sparked opposition, particularly from Arbab Shehzad, the grandson of Arbab Niaz. Arbab Shehzad, a former Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and an ex-adviser to Imran Khan has rejected the decision, calling it an attempt to please Imran Khan at the expense of his grandfather’s legacy.

He emphasized that the Peshawar Municipal Committee had officially named the stadium after his father through a resolution passed after his death in recognition of his services. He also questioned whether the provincial government had sought Imran Khan’s approval for the renaming, noting that the former Premier has consistently opposed naming roads or buildings after living individuals.

Arbab Shehzad further highlighted that in 2013, the provincial cabinet had approved a decision in Imran Khan’s presence, stating that no buildings or roads would be named after living persons. He stressed that the stadium’s original name should remain unchanged.

Meanwhile, unverified reports suggest that Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches may not be held in Peshawar, as franchise teams have reportedly refused to play in the city.

  • Hospitalised Pope Francis still makes nightly call to Gaza

Hospitalised Pope Francis still makes nightly call to Gaza

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, has been admitted in hospital for bronchitis which turned into pneumonia in both his lungs. However, despite being quite unwell, the 88-year-old Pontiff is still making his nightly call to Gaza from his hospital bed.

Sometimes the Pope uses a video call and sometimes a text message to stay in touch with a small Catholic parish in the Gaza strip. Reverend Gabriel Romanelli, the priest of the church in Gaza, has confirmed to Vatican News that the Pope calls every night at 8 pm Palestine time, maintaining the almost daily contact he begun when Israel started its onslaught on the Gaza strip.

“Although we had a blackout in the whole area of Gaza City, he insisted and managed to contact us with a video call,” the Reverend told the Vatican media outlet, adding that the Pope inquires about the parishioners and gives blessings.

A video of the Pope saying “Asalam o Alaikum” to Muslims present at the church went viral a few weeks ago. Francis, the first Jesuit head of the Roman Catholic Church, has been a vocal opponent of Israel’s war on Gaza, going so far as to suggest that the occupying country must be investigated for war crimes.

He has also called Israel’s actions in the besieged strip “terrorism”, pleading for an end to the genocide multiple times.

The vocal opposition warned him the wrath of powerful Zionists, including the entire Israeli government, however, the Pope has not budged from his point of view.

Concerns for the Pope’s health peaked day before yesterday when his doctors said that his medical situation is “complex”. The next day, the Vatican said that though the Pope remains stable, slight improvement in his blood work shows that inflammation in his body is going down. As of Thursday, the Pope is said to have gotten out of his hospital bed to sit in an armchair for breakfast while his fever has also dissipated.

The pneumonia still afflicts him, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed on Thursday, but it is now limited to certain spots in the lungs instead of being spread throughout.

Moreover, Pakistani-led initiatives have played a key role in first aid training and emergency response services. For example, organizations like Coast2Coast First Aid in Oshawa offer essential first aid training programs, ensuring that communities are equipped with life-saving skills. Such initiatives reflect the Pakistani community’s dedication to public welfare and highlight their role in strengthening healthcare systems beyond their homeland.

    Strengthening Pakistan’s Global Image

The achievements of Pakistanis abroad help reshape global perceptions of the country. As Pakistanis excel in various fields, they serve as cultural ambassadors, breaking stereotypes and showcasing the potential of the nation.

Pakistani professionals, students, and business leaders contribute to international forums, ensuring that Pakistan has a voice on the global stage. Through sports, arts, and media, they bring attention to the country’s rich history and achievements, fostering a more positive and inclusive image.

Their efforts not only support Pakistan’s development but also enrich the societies they are a part of. Whether through entrepreneurship, advocacy, or initiatives like Coast2Coast First Aid in Oshawa, the diaspora showcases resilience, talent, and a deep-rooted commitment to progress. A lift at Lahore’s Mayo Hospital collapsed on Thursday, injuring eight people, according to media reports.

The incident occurred in the hospital’s orthopaedic ward, where a total of 12 individuals were inside the lift at the time of the accident. Notably, the lift had been inaugurated just six months ago. Among the injured were hospital staff members, including three nurses who sustained leg fractures.

Additionally, two students were also among the injured. All victims were immediately shifted to the emergency ward for medical attention.

The injured individuals have been identified as 40-year-old staff nurse Rubina Zaidi, 46-year-old Shazia Munir, 50-year-old Ashtar Rauf, 30-year-old Iram Shehzadi, 54-year-old Farhana Jabeen, 34-year-old Maryam Ramzan, 57-year-old Noreen Ameen, 50-year-old Samina Iqbal, 43-year-old Najma Parveen, 22-year-old Sonia Mumtaz, and 50-year-old Abida Parveen.

  • Sher Afzal Marwat says his cap was bugged

Sher Afzal Marwat says his cap was bugged

Member National Assembly (MNA) and recently expelled former member of PTI, Sher Afzal Marwat has claimed that he has recovered hidden cameras from his office and even his cap was bugged.

In an inclusive interview with a digital media outlet, Marwat stated on Wednesday, “We have removed cameras four to five times [from office]. If it were to be searched again, at least one camera might be discovered. A device was also found in the cap I used to wear.”

On being asked about accusations that he and Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Ali Amin Gandapur are close to the establishment, the maverick leader dismissed the allegations, saying, “It is the same as if I accuse you [the interviewer] of being close to the establishment.”

“I believe that after Imran Khan, Ali Amin has the most cases registered against him,” Marwat said, alleging that during custody, Gandapur’s toenails were removed and his hair was cut.

When asked who he believes is responsible for the November 26 protest crackdown against demonstrators in Islamabad, Marwat blamed Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi along with the establishment.

Asked if Gandapur can be replaced as CM KP, given that Junaid Akbar was recently appointed as the province’s party president, Marwat said that Gandapur arranged all the rallies that they had staged in the past and lamented that all political parties, including Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), hate him owing to his association with PTI.

He reiterated that the ex-Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, with the assistance of former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar, wrongfully removed PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif from power in 2017.

When informed that Imran Khan has opposing opinions about Sharif’s removal, Marwat responded, “I am a lawyer; my opinion will always be with the law.”

He was then asked if he would resign from parliament if Imran Khan demanded it. The KP firebrand said that he had announced earlier that he would resign as parliamentarian if Imran Khan asked for it.

Last week, PTI issued the notification of Marwat’s expulsion on X (formerly Twitter), which reads, “Further to the Show Cause Notice issued to Mr Sher Afzal Marwat and his subsequent reply, the party has considered his reply and also his actions subject to the Show Cause notice.”

“Taking both these aspects into consideration and on the instructions of Founding Chairman Imran Khan, Mr. Sher Afzal Marwat is being expelled from the party with immediate effect.”

Marwat concluded by saying, “I’m fed up with this kind of politics; maybe I won’t even stay in Pakistan.”
