  • Gold’s joyride speeds uphill, reaching Rs308,000 per Tola

Gold’s joyride speeds uphill, reaching Rs308,000 per Tola

The seemingly never-ending joyride of gold prices upward continues as gold prices recently summited a new peak of 308,000 rupees per tola – after experiencing a 3,800 rupee price spike. Moreover, reports reveal that the 10-gram rates have surged to 264,060 rupees.

Reports reveal that central banks across the world are making an active effort to build up their gold reserves, which has significantly contributed to the astronomical rise in gold prices that have been experienced recently.

Towards the end of 2024, central banks collectively purchased a staggering 333 tons of the precious metal, which marked a 54 percent year-on-year rise in central bank gold purchases. Notable purchases have been witnessed from the People’s Bank of China, the National Bank of Poland, and even The Reserve Bank of India.

The logic behind the rise in gold prices because of the aforementioned reasons is hidden in the market forces of supply and demand. Since large entities such as central banks are purchasing the commodity in bulk, it raises demand, whereas supply simply can’t keep up – as exploration and mining operations are time-consuming.

While central banks remain the largest driver of gold demand, smaller independent investors have also invested in the commodity. Speculative forces suggest that prices will surge past $3,000 per ounce.

According to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA), international gold prices are facing inflationary pressures because of US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose an extortionate 25 percent tariff on certain trade goods and commodities. This has reportedly resulted in gold prices rising by $34 since Tuesday to reach $2,944 per ounce.

Rising tariffs reduce the demand for the goods and services of the country against which tariffs are being levied. As such, the value of its currency falls accordingly because of the fall in demand for its goods. People are purchasing gold in order to safeguard their cash holdings from depreciating in value because of tariffs.

For reference, on 1 January 2024, 10-gram gold and one-tola gold rates reportedly stood at a conservative 188,357 rupees and 219,700 rupees. However, geopolitical and economic factors have caused prices to surge by 75,703 rupees (10-gram) and 88,300 rupees (one tola).

While rising gold prices spell great news for those who jumped on the bandwagon, when it was still slow, they are detrimental to certain businesses. For instance, chairman Mohammad Arshad of the All Pakistan Jewellers Manufacturers Association has revealed a severe decline in jewellery purchases as prices continue to rise.

As per reports, small to medium gold jewellery makers have not been receiving orders and sit idle. If this situation persists, it could push a large number of business owners out of the jewellery-making industry.

  • SOE losses soar to Rs851bn in 2023-24: report

SOE losses soar to Rs851bn in 2023-24: report

A shocking report was released on Wednesday by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) revealing that total losses of State Owned Enterprises (SOE) stood at a staggering 851 billion rupees during 2023-24. Moreover, the combined debt stock of SOE’s sits dangerously high at 9.2 trillion rupees.

According to financial experts, the accumulated debt stock is approximately equal to the entirety of revenues generated by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) which reflects poor financial management on the part of the directors who run these SOEs in question.

These findings came about from the Aggregate Annual Report of SOE’s which is compulsory under the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme which cash strapped Pakistan is a part of. As per the MoF, a few public entities generated meagre profits which were then invested in Pakistan’s Sovereign Wealth Fund (PSWF).

However, the gains from these investments were not enough to offset the losses causing the MoF to report a whopping net aggregate loss of 521.5 billion rupees. Moreover, the entities that generated the profits were left with strained cash flows as their money was used to assist loss making firms.

Collectively, the worst contributors to the colossally high loss value were companies in the power sector. These companies routinely cause losses which the general public has to shoulder. Islamabad is well acquainted with this fact as SOEs from the power sector significantly hurt the national exchequer.

However, the single largest loss was experienced because of the National Highway Authority (NHA) which stood close to 300 billion rupees. Combined, the SOEs wiped out 2.5 trillion rupees in economic value.

These losses were experienced despite a surge of 5.26 percent in the total revenues of the aforementioned SOEs. However, a closer look at their finances reveal that they faced a total net loss surge of 89 percent which translates into 13.5 trillion rupees. The losses were contained via federal grants and subsidies which reduced the aggregate loss value by an impressive 14 percent.

Many analysts consider privatisation to be a feasible avenue to save the national exchequer from the burden of inefficient SOEs. This might be the only way to effectively follow a contractionary fiscal policy to appease international lenders – as this will show creditors that Pakistan is willing to stringently follow austerity measures.

It is not yet clear how privatisation will be received yet as the book value of SOE assets grew by an enviable 6.37 percent on a year on year basis to 38.434 trillion rupees. On the other hand, Return on Equity (ROE), is negative sitting at an abysmal value of negative 0.5 percent. However, it is likely that the value could turn green once a profit maximising firm acquires these SOEs.

  • Cracks in Indian dressing room as star player blames Gambhir for Champions Trophy omission

Cracks in Indian dressing room as star player blames Gambhir for Champions Trophy omission

A new controversy has emerged in the Indian cricket team’s dressing room, as a star player has reportedly blamed head coach Gautam Gambhir for his exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad.

With India set to face Pakistan in a high-stakes clash on February 23, the Indian media is questioning whether everything is running smoothly within the team. India recently dominated England in white-ball cricket, winning the T20I series 4-1 and sweeping the ODI series 3-0.

According to media reports, a senior Indian cricketer has accused Gambhir of not considering him as the first-choice wicketkeeper in India’s Champions Trophy XI.

The report did not disclose the name of the wicketkeeper-batsman or confirm whether he is part of India’s Champions Trophy squad. However, since he was referred to as a “star player,” only a few candidates fit the description.

Sources told Times Now that a current Indian wicketkeeper is unhappy with Gambhir. Since he is not the first-choice selection in India’s ODI playing XI, speculation is growing about the reason behind his exclusion.

India is set to play its first match of the tournament against Bangladesh today (February 20), while the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash is scheduled for February 23.

  • ‘Personally drove car to Balochistan’; Mustafa’s murder suspect makes shocking revelation

‘Personally drove car to Balochistan’; Mustafa’s murder suspect makes shocking revelation

The prime suspect in Karachi student Mustafa Amir’s murder has revealed shocking details during a four-day physical remand, a leading English newspaper reported on Thursday.

As per the details, prime suspect Armughan admitted that he personally drove the victim’s car from Khyaban-e-Momin in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to the Daraji area in Balochistan, where Amir’s body was disposed of.

He confessed that he had taken measures to cover his tracks before being apprehended, admitting to deleting all data from the laptop at his home.

Meanwhile, according to police records, Armughan has been implicated in multiple serious crimes since 2019, including terrorism, attempted murder, drug trafficking, and extortion. Over the years, he has faced charges at several police stations, including Darakhshan, Sahil, Gizri, Boat Basin, and with the ANF.

Speaking to a private media outlet today (Thursday), Karachi correspondent Kamil Arif alleged that Armughan and Mustafa had been associated with a drug cartel.

Commenting on sophisticated weapons recovered during a raid at the Armughan’s house recently, Arif claimed that the firearms are not available in the Pakistan market, hinting that the guns might have been brought from the dark web.

He went on to further claim that only selected individuals knew Armughan by his real name; the rest, including his servants, called him the “boss”. “He [Armughan] had hidden his identity,” Arif said.

When asked about the suspect’s father’s background, Kamil claimed that Armughan’s father had once been associated with a musical band.

As per media details, Armughan had been running an illegal software house and call centre from his home in Gizri. This illicit operation allegedly defrauded foreign clients of millions of dollars over the years.

Bachelor Business Administration (BBA) student Mustafa had gone missing on January 6. The case came to light after the prime suspect opened fire at a team of the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) — a specialised unit of the Karachi police responsible for tackling cases related to murder and extortion — during a raid at his residence in Karachi DHA earlier this month.

On Jan 12, police found an unidentified body in a torched car in Hub, which Balochistan police later handed over to the Edhi Foundation for burial. The unclaimed body was buried at the Edhi graveyard in Karachi on Jan 16.

Arif claimed that the grave is being exhumed tomorrow (Friday) to collect DNA samples for matching with Amir’s mother.

  • Travel influencer laments restrictions of Pakistani boyfriend’s ‘weak passport’

Travel influencer laments restrictions of Pakistani boyfriend’s ‘weak passport’

Travel writer and content creator Kate Woodley has often posted videos praising Pakistan on her Instagram account kateacrossborderss. She has made videos about the scenery, the hiking and the food. But now she has posted a more personal video, about being in a relationship with a Pakistani man and the challenges the weak green passport poses for them.

Taking to her Instagram account, she posted a video of herself walking hand in hand with a Pakistani man who’s identity isn’t visible.

In the caption she wrote: “I’m currently with a wonderful Pakistani guy whose passport ranks 91/197. Its not great.”

She went on to write that the two will be restricted to being together in Pakistan and USA for the next three years. “For somebody who normally visits 10-20 countries a year, that’s a little tricky.”

She said that her boyfriend is coming to visit her family in the UK but added that she hates that this is a thing in their relationship and a topic in daily conversation.

Asking her followers whether the hassle was worth it, she went on to stress that he was “one of the best” people and said: “I am not going to walk away from that easily.”

The Henley Passport Index ranks Pakistan at 103 for weakness. Passport Index puts the country at 92. In either of the rankings, Pakistani passports fare quite poorly. That means that holders of the Pakistani passport need visas to visit the vast majority of countries in the world.

Singapore has the strongest passport in the world, with access to 193 countries without needing a visa. Japan comes in at number two.

Afghanistan is the weakest passport in the world. Syria and Iraq are also considered weak passports.

  • Arab leaders meet to counter Trump’s Gaza plan

Arab leaders meet to counter Trump’s Gaza plan

Arab leaders will gather in Saudi Arabia on Friday to counter President Donald Trump’s plan for US control of Gaza and the expulsion of its inhabitants, diplomatic and government sources said.

The plan stirred rare unity among Arab states which roundly rejected the idea, but they could still disagree over who will govern the Palestinian territory and who will pay for reconstruction.

Umer Karim, an expert on Saudi foreign policy, told AFP the summit would be the “most consequential” in decades in relation to the wider Arab world and the Palestinian issue.

Trump provoked international outrage when he announced that the United States would “take over the Gaza Strip”, moving 2.4 million Gazans living there to neighbouring Egypt and Jordan.

A source close to the Saudi government told AFP Arab leaders would discuss “a reconstruction plan counter to Trump’s plan for Gaza”.

Meeting with Trump in Washington on February 11, Jordan’s King Abdullah II said Egypt would present a plan for a way forward.

The Saudi source said the talks would discuss “a version of the Egyptian plan” the king mentioned.

Friday’s summit was originally planned for Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan.

However, it has been expanded to include the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the Palestinian Authority.

For Palestinians, any attempt to force them from Gaza would have echoes of what the Arab world calls the “Nakba” or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled in the fighting that accompanied Israel’s creation in 1948.

    Reconstruction

Reconstruction will be a critical issue at the summit after Trump highlighted this as the key reason for moving its inhabitants out while Gaza’s infrastructure is rebuilt.

Egypt has not yet announced its counter-initiative, but Egyptian former diplomat Mohamed Hegazy described a plan “in three technical phases over a period of three to five years”.

The first would be a six-month “early recovery phase”, said the member of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, a think tank with strong ties to decision-making circles in Cairo.

“Heavy machinery will be brought in to remove debris, while designated safe zones will be identified within Gaza to temporarily relocate residents,” Hegazy said.

The second phase will require an international conference to provide details of reconstruction and would focus on rebuilding utility infrastructure, he said.

“The final phase will oversee the urban planning of Gaza, the construction of housing units, and the provision of educational and healthcare services.”

A UN estimate on Tuesday put the cost of rebuilding at more than $53 billion, including more than $20 billion over the first three years.

The last phase would include “launching a political track to implement the two-state solution and so that there is… an incentive for a sustainable truce”.

Umer Karim believes that adopting this plan would require “a degree of Arab unity not seen before in decades”.

    Finance

One Arab diplomat familiar with the Gulf told AFP: “In the end, the biggest challenge facing the Egyptian plan is how to finance it.

“Some countries like Kuwait will inject funds, perhaps for humanitarian reasons, but other Gulf states will set specific conditions before any financial transfer.”

Karim said the “Saudis and Emiratis won’t spend any money if (the) Qataris and Egyptians don’t guarantee something on Hamas”.

Egypt’s plan seeks to address the complex issue of post-war oversight for Gaza, which Hamas has controlled since 2007, with “a Palestinian administration that is not aligned with any faction”.

It will comprise “experts” and will not be “factionally affiliated and is politically and legally subordinate to the Palestinian Authority”, Hegazy said.

The Cairo initiative also envisions a Palestinian Authority-affiliated police force supplemented with security forces from Egypt, Arab states and other countries.

    Differences remain, however.

Hegazy said that Hamas “will retreat from the political scene in the coming period”, while the Saudi source said Riyadh envisions a Gaza Strip controlled by the Palestinian Authority.

Qatar, a key mediator in the war, believes the Palestinians themselves must decide Gaza’s future.

“I think all regional actors understand that any alternative plan they propose cannot include Hamas in any form as presence of Hamas will make it unpalatable for the US administration and Israel,” Karim said.

“So overall some things within the Strip have to fundamentally change in order for this plan to at least have a chance.”

  • Here is how India reacted to Pakistan’s air show during Champions Trophy opening

Here is how India reacted to Pakistan’s air show during Champions Trophy opening

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 kicked off on February 19, with New Zealand facing Pakistan at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi.

However, an unexpected moment occurred when Pakistan Air Force fighter jets flew over the stadium, creating an extremely loud noise.

The incident took place shortly after Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and chose to bowl first. As New Zealand openers prepared to take the field, the deafening sound caused a brief moment of panic.

Opener Devon Conway instinctively ducked before realising what had happened. The crowd also reacted with fear — some fans covered their ears, while others clutched their chests in shock.

Soon after, social media users, particularly Indians, flooded the internet with jokes and memes about the incident.

    Here’s how Indians reacted:

The Champions Trophy 2025 is a historic event, marking the return of an ICC tournament to Pakistan after 29 years.

International cricket in the country was halted after the 2009 Lahore terror attack, which injured Sri Lankan players and caused several casualties. It wasn’t until 2015 that international teams, starting with Zimbabwe, resumed touring Pakistan.

In 2021, New Zealand abandoned their tour just before the first match amid safety concerns.
