    Internet divided after viral video shows Hamza Ali Abbasi officiating Nikah

    Social media users are divided over a viral video that showed actor Hamza Ali Abbasi officiating the marriage ceremony of a couple.

    According to the details, the video showed Abbasi reading a script off a phone, asking the groom if he accepted the bride, as per tradition.

    “Qabool hai [I accept],” the groom can be heard as saying all three times, to which Abbasi responds with “SubhanAllah [glory be to Allah]”.

    While the video was well-received by thousands who said that anyone could read Nikah that was “a legal and not a religious document”, others said that it lacked certain “decorum” that should have been there.

    “Nikah and funeral prayers can be conducted by any Muslim,” wrote one user. Another said that it was in fact a good practice and not every act should be criticised online.

    “My Nikah was officiated by my uncle and there is nothing wrong with that,” said a third.

    A couple others opined that marriage officiation should be left to those who “realise its significance”, while another jokingly wrote, “Now even this is being done by actors? Leave something for others to do.”

    Some even took to social media to point out how “handsome” the Nikah officiator was.

    It merits a mention that the video comes months after Abbasi made headlines for his new book called “My Discovery of God – Islam and Judgement Day”.

    Prior to this, Abbasi had announced embarking on “a journey of self-discovery” to research more on religion.

    “Alhamdullilah. For now, it is available in the USA [sic] only but soon it will be available globally and in Pakistan, will keep you all posted. Thank you,” the Maula Jatt star had said while announcing the book in a social media post last year.

    In November 2024, Islamabad failed to sell the national flag carrier to private entities, receiving only a measly 10 billion rupees from the owner of Blue World City – A real estate developer. According to reports, Islamabad has decided to momentarily shift the privatisation process of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to the second phase.

    The reasoning behind this move is to allow lawmakers and authorities to concentrate on the privatisation efforts surrounding power distribution companies (Discos). Reports reveal that Islamabad’s top priority is to sell off Discos despite analysts claiming that the government should take some time to oversee relevant actions to prepare for the process.

    Pakistan’s consideration of privatising Discos was discussed by domestic authorities with a World Bank (WB) delegation that is currently visiting the cash-strapped country. Reports revealed that the WB delegation comprises a team of executive directors who are in town to go over economic reforms which Islamabad plans to enact.

    The privatisation efforts are part of these reforms and fall under the umbrella of the Country Partnership Framework (CPF). The CPF was inked last month, unlocking a staggering $20 billion in indicative assistance from the WB.

    As per data from reports, the WB has divided this loan amount into two parts for Pakistan. Under the CPF, $14 billion will be provided in ‘concessional loans’ and will have advantageous terms for Pakistan. The rest of the loan, amounting to $6 billion, will be given to Pakistan at higher interest rates.

    Both the WB and Pakistan are expected to engage with each other in implementation workshops, as active collaboration could allow for the CPF to mature and meet its objectives successfully.

    After temporarily sidelining PIA’s privatisation efforts to the second phase, policymakers have moved Disco privatization up to phase one of the plan. The Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Khan Cheema, reportedly revealed to the visiting WB team that other State-Owned Entities (SOEs) will also be privatised in phase two.

    Privatisation has historically been viewed as a negative activity by the general public. However, these loss-making institutions are the root cause of the excessive taxes that citizens must bear to keep public industries up and running.

    If the taxes from Pakistanis are not enough, the government has to borrow funds to finance these industries to keep them operational. Ultimately, the burden of the interest falls upon citizens once again once the loans reach maturity.

    Ahad Khan outlined how about a third of the SOEs were ‘strategic’ assets, with the remaining assets being available to be put up on the auction block. As per reports, the minister conveyed to the WB delegation about Islamabad’s aims to privatize upwards of 50 SOEs within three to four years.

    Maverick leader Sher Afzal Marwat on Monday claimed that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif was wrongfully removed, alluding to his 2017 disqualification from power over undeclared assets.

    Speaking on a private media channel, Marwat asserted, “Definitely, Nawaz Sharif was wrongfully removed. Removing him for not receiving a salary from his son was [unjustified],” adding that Sharif could have been disqualified in the Panama Papers case or the Avenfield case instead.

    When told that such remarks might displease many of his companions, Marwat said, “I cannot tell a lie merely to make my party happy. I am a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Pakistan; I know that [Nawaz Sharif’s ouster] decision was not right.”

    The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) firebrand further alleged that former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General (r) Qamar Javed Bajwa was involved in orchestrating Sharif’s removal from office, noting that ex-Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar facilitated Bajwa.

    “You [Marwat] were a beneficiary [of Nawaz Sharif’s removal from power]. One should acknowledge that,” the talk show host said. In response, Marwat asked, “Why are you saying that I was the beneficiary?” adding that he was speaking about Nawaz Sharif not as a PTI leader but as a lawyer.

    When asked who was involved in his expulsion from PTI, the maverick leader, without naming anyone, said that the same party leaders who had previously expelled him were behind his recent ouster. “If I announce their names, then [Imran] Khan would be grieved. Khan knows very well who expelled me.”

    It should be noted that PTI issued a notification of Marwat’s expulsion on Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter), which reads, “Further to the Show Cause Notice issued to Mr Sher Afzal Marwat and his subsequent reply, the party has considered his reply and also his actions subject to the Show Cause notice.”

    “Taking both these aspects into consideration and on the instructions of Founding Chairman Imran Khan, Mr. Sher Afzal Marwat is being expelled from the party with immediate effect.”

    Revealing that the incarcerated party founder has summoned him to Adiala Jail for a meeting, Marwat said he would visit Imran Khan soon.

    “I will not take even a minute to resign,” Marwat responded when asked what he would do if Imran Khan demanded his resignation from the National Assembly, adding that he would not beg to be reinstated in the party.

    Israr Khattak (IRC) claimed the top spot in the full marathon, finishing first, followed by Mubariz Bukhari (IRC) in second place and Mumtaz Khan (KJFC) securing third.

    Christina from Austria finished in first place for the female full marathon.

    Kamran Sahi (KJFC) clinched the first position in the half marathon whereas Muhammad Ijaz (KJFC) and Umar Zaman (IRU) secured the second and third spots, respectively.

    In the female half marathon, Livia emerged as the winner while Aqsa Jafar (Punjab Athletics Academy) took second and Khadija Afiyat (Punjab Athletics Academy) finished third.

    Muhammad Bilal from Punjab Athletics Academy triumphed in the 5km male category, followed by Muhammad Arfan (KJFC) in second place and Abdul Wahab (Punjab Athletics Academy) in third.

    The top spot in the 5km female race went to Irum Shahzadi from KJFC, with Mahnoor Afzal (KJFC) finishing in second place and Kashaf Shafeeq (Punjab Athletics Academy) securing third.

    Apart from runners from Belgium, Russia, Thailand and the United States (US), a large number of expats also participated in the marathon that was declared a resounding success by visitors and spectators alike.

    Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani revealed the shocking story behind Hardik Pandya and his brother Krunal Pandya.

    Nita first met Hardik and Krunal more than a decade ago during a training camp.

    Speaking at an event in Boston, she said,  “In the IPL, we all have a fixed budget, so we have to think of new ways to scout talent. At that time, we were looking for fresh talent. I used to attend every Ranji Trophy match. One day, our scouts brought two skinny young boys to our camp.”

    Recalling her conversation with the Pandya brothers, she continued,  “When I spoke to Hardik and Krunal, they told me that for three years, they had eaten nothing but Maggi noodles because they had no money. But I saw the passion and hunger in them to achieve something big.”

    “Those two brothers were none other than Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya. In 2015, I bought Hardik Pandya for $10,000, and today, he is the proud captain of Mumbai Indians,” she added.

    Hardik started his career in 2015 with Mumbai Indians, followed by his selection for the Indian cricket team. Over time, he became one of India’s top cricketers and remains an integral part of the national team today.
