Trump welcomes Iran ‘calling off mass executions’ as protests ease

United States (US) President Donald Trump has thanked the leadership in Tehran for cancelling what he said were “hundreds of planned executions of protesters” after a crackdown.

In a social media post, President Trump said the mass hangings had been called off and praised Iran for the move, as deadly unrest across the country appears to be easing after a harsh crackdown.

Trump, whose repeated threats to act had included a vow to “take very strong action” if Iran executed protesters, said Tehran’s leaders had called off mass hangings.

“I greatly respect the fact that all scheduled hangings, which were to take place yesterday (Over 800 of them), have been cancelled by the leadership of Iran. Thank you!” he said in the social media statement.

Iran, however, has not publicly announced plans for such executions or said it had cancelled them.

The protests that erupted on December 28 over economic hardship and swelled into widespread demonstrations calling for the end of present rule, culminating in mass violence at the end of last week, Reuters reported.

According to opposition groups and an Iranian official, more than 2,000 people were killed in the worst domestic unrest since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

But several residents of Tehran reached by Reuters said the capital had now been comparatively quiet for four days. Drones were flying over the city, but there had been no sign of major protests on Thursday or Friday.

Another resident in a northern city on the Caspian Sea said the streets there also appeared calm.

The prospect of a US attack has retreated since Wednesday when Trump said he had been told killings in Iran were easing.

Earlier, US allies, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, conducted intense diplomacy with Washington to prevent a strike, warning of repercussions for the wider region that would ultimately impact the US, Reuters quoted a Gulf official as saying.

Meanwhile, Reza Pahlavi, the US-based son of Iran’s last shah who has gained increasing prominence as an opposition figure, urged the international community to ramp up pressure on Tehran to help protesters overthrow the present setup.

“The Iranian people are taking decisive action on the ground. It is now time for the international community to join them fully,” he said.

  • Police arrest two serial child rapists accused of assaulting over 100 children in Karachi

Police arrest two serial child rapists accused of assaulting over 100 children in Karachi

Police have arrested two serial child rapists accused of sexually assaulting more than 100 children in Karachi, media reports have stated.

According to reports, East Investigation Police arrested the suspects from Mehmoodabad within the jurisdiction of Tipu Sultan Police Station, acting on intelligence information.

Officers identified the main suspect as Imran while his accomplice is named Waqas Khan.

According to SP Investigation Usman Sadozai, investigators made the arrests after a child identified the suspects during a targeted operation by a special investigation team.

Imran runs a puncture repair stall in the Mehmoodabad area and lives in Manzoor Colony.

Police revealed that between 2020 and 2025, seven cases of child sexual abuse reached police stations across four districts of Karachi including Malir, Korangi, East and South.

DNA analysis confirmed that the same person committed all the crimes, which raised a alarm among investigators. All victims were boys aged between 12 and 13 years, while in one case more than one person assaulted the child.

SP Sadozai said that Imran has confessed to sexually assaulting dozens of children over the past six years.

He reportedly lured victims by offering motorcycle rides and then took them to deserted areas near the Malir Nadi, where he committed the assaults.

In all seven registered cases, the accused’s DNA matched the forensic evidence. In three cases, the victims positively identified Imran, while in one case the child identified both Imran and his accomplice Waqas Khan.

Police said that in one incident, the suspects attempted to take a child to Surjani Town but fled after the victim raised an alarm.

Police officials said that Additional Inspector General Karachi Azad Khan formed a special investigation team on January 6 under the supervision of DIG CIA Muqaddas Haider. The team, led by East Investigation, arrested the suspects within 11 days.

    Further investigations are going on.

  • ‘Simply unacceptable’: Danish shuttler Mia Blitchfeldt slams conditions at India Open

‘Simply unacceptable’: Danish shuttler Mia Blitchfeldt slams conditions at India Open

Danish badminton player Mia Blitchfeldt has intensified her criticism of the playing conditions at the ongoing India Open tournament in New Delhi, calling them “simply unacceptable and highly unprofessional” in a detailed Instagram post.

Blitchfeldt, who had previously voiced concerns about the conditions at the tournament, revisited her criticism with a lengthy statement that highlighted the difficulties players face in focusing on their performance amid the challenging environment.

“The past few days in India have been tough – tougher than I honestly expected. I had mentally prepared myself for ‘the worst’ once again, but the conditions surrounding us are simply unacceptable and highly unprofessional,” Blitchfeldt wrote on Instagram.

The Danish shuttler emphasized that the poor conditions have affected players’ ability to concentrate on their game and preparations.

    Instagram Post

“We are here to perform and to stay focused on our preparations, both on and off the court. Unfortunately, under these circumstances, it becomes extremely difficult to focus solely on competing and delivering our best performance. Everyone is stressed and frustrated by the conditions we are being met with at a World Tour Super 750 event. At first, you try to laugh it off, but in the end, it is neither funny nor fair to the players or anyone participating in this event,” she added.

Blitchfeldt expressed particular concern about the upcoming World Championships, which New Delhi will host later this year. She questioned whether the national capital can provide suitable conditions for such a prestigious event.

“I am glad that this issue is finally receiving the attention it deserves, and I truly hope for better conditions for us players in the future if we are to continue competing in India. Sadly, under the current circumstances, I find it very difficult to see how a World Championship could be held here. I hope @bwf.official will do more to ensure proper conditions and better protection for the players in the future,” Mia concluded.

Blitchfeldt’s criticism comes amid mounting frustration from international players about the tournament conditions.

Fellow Danish shuttler Anders Antonsen withdrew from the India Open 2026, citing severe air pollution in New Delhi. In an Instagram story, Anders said he hopes New Delhi’s air quality will improve later this year when the national capital hosts the BWF World Championships. Anders also confirmed that BWF has fined him 5000 USD.

According to media reports, players have also had to contend with bird droppings on the courts during matches. In another bizarre incident, a monkey entered the playing area, further disrupting the tournament and adding to players’ frustrations about the overall conditions at the Super 750 event.

Samiya Hijab threatens to ‘expose’ a cricketer

Amid a series of social media posts exposing men, particularly celebrities, having extramarital affairs or making unwarranted sexual advances towards women, TikToker and influencer Samiya Hijab has threatened to “expose a cricketer”.

“Itnay mard expose ho rahay hain, main bhe aik cricketer ko expose kr doon kia [So many men are being exposed, should I also expose a cricketer]?” she asked in the caption of a video on her account, which came as a wave of similar videos pertaining to celebrities’ infidelity, grips India.

Punjabi singer Karan Aujla recently faced similar allegations after a US-based singer claimed that he hid his marital status and got into a relationship with her. The singer, namely MS Gori, claimed that the singer pressured her to stay silent.

She also claimed that police officials and other relevant authorities in the US and Canada were aware of the matter, but nothing official had come out.

While Karan and his team have not yet responded to the allegations, the allegations are a series of similar claims targeting a number of prominent showbiz personalities, cricketers and social media influences in India.

Samiya herself recently made headlines when Islamabad police arrested a man for allegedly harassing and attempting to abduct her.

The influencer filed a case claiming the man stalked her for several days and attempted to forcefully kidnap her from her house.

The suspect, Hassan Zahid, later confessed to his crime before a district and sessions court in Islamabad.

Samiya, however, eventually dropped the case and reconciled with the accused, forgiving him “for the sake of Allah” in an exclusive interview with a social media outlet.

  • Mahmood Khan Achakzai is the new opposition leader in National Assembly

Mahmood Khan Achakzai is the new opposition leader in National Assembly

Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq on Friday notified Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the new opposition leader in the lower house, months after the post was left vacant after Omar Ayub was sentenced to imprisonment.

Achakzai, who also heads the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), was nominated for the position by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan following the disqualification of his predecessor Omar Ayub, who was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in a May 9 case.

“In pursuance of rule 39 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in NA, 2007, honourable speaker has been pleased to declare Mahmood Khan Achakzai, MNA, as Leader of the Opposition in NA with effect from January 16, 2026,” read the notification issued by NA acting Secretary Saeed Ahmad Maitla.

The notification followed a meeting between NA Speaker Sadiq and a delegation of opposition lawmakers, including PTI leaders Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Junaid Akbar, Aamir Dogar, Shahram Khan Tarakai, Latif Khosa and Jamal Ahsan Khan.

Achakzai’s appointment comes at a critical juncture as he has called for a national dialogue among all political parties to help steer the country out of crisis. PTI leaders have emphasised that the mandate to engage with the ruling coalition rests with Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

Speaking to a private news channel, senior PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Imran Khan had authorised Achakzai to negotiate with the government. “Achakzai can decide better what to do,” he added.

Since Imran Khan’s ouster through a vote of no-confidence in April 2022, PTI has been at odds with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). The party has staged multiple marches towards Islamabad, leading to police crackdowns and arrests.

PTI also faces challenges on the political and legal fronts, with its founder Imran Khan and senior leaders including Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Yasmin Rashid in custody over alleged involvement in the May 9 incidents.

  • Another setback for India as it winds down Iran’s Chabahar port after US threatens sanctions

Another setback for India as it winds down Iran’s Chabahar port after US threatens sanctions

India’s involvement in the development of Iran’s Chabahar port has effectively come to a halt following the reimposition of sanctions by United States of America and renewed warnings from President Donald Trump over trade with Tehran.

Trump said on January 12 that any country doing business with Iran would face a 25 percent tariff on “any and all business being done with the United States of America.” The statement followed the US decision to reimpose sanctions on the Chabahar port from September 29, 2025, ending a limited exemption that had allowed India to operate at the facility.

Despite the sanctions, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control granted India a six-month waiver after New Delhi submitted details of how it planned to wind down all activities at the port, including operations at the Shahid Beheshti terminal.

The waiver took effect on October 29, 2025, and remains valid until April 26.

More than a year before the sanctions were reinstated, India transferred the full amount it had committed to the project, estimated at $120 million, to Iran. A government source said the funds were moved in advance because officials were aware that sanctions would return after the signing of the long-term agreement.

“When the sanctions are reimposed, transfer of funds would have become difficult. So, before the sanctions came, all the funds were transferred to Iran,” the source said. “India now has no liability in its commitment given to Iran on Chabahar port.”

“The Iranian government is free to do whatever they want with the money transferred by the Indian government per the long-term agreement,” the source said. “If Iran wants to buy cranes and other gears for Chabahar port, they can independently do that and they can carry on operations at the port independently without any involvement from India.

“India has no choice but to exit the Chabahar port,” a second government source said. “Fortunately, we don’t have any assets there; we were only running the port with manpower from Iran; that was the main activity of IPGL.” The source added, “We have to exit unless the sanctions are eased by the US again.”

Chabahar port is located in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province on the country’s southeastern coast, outside the Persian Gulf.

The port was intended to give India access to Afghanistan and Central Asia through Iran and was also linked to the International North-South Transport Corridor, a 7,200-kilometre network connecting India with Iran, Russia, Central Asia and Europe through sea, rail and road routes.

  • Honey Singh apologises after vulgar remarks during concert

Honey Singh apologises after vulgar remarks during concert

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh has issued a public apology after facing severe backlash for passing vulgar remarks during a recent concert.

Two days ago, during a Nanku and Karun concert in Delhi, the rapper said to the crowd, “Have s*x in the car in Delhi’s winters. Condoms. Use condoms,” with suggestive words thrown in. A clip of his remarks went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism.

Following the uproar, the rapper shared a video on social media defending his intentions while apologising for the language he used.

“When I went on the show, I saw the Gen Z audience and thought I’d give them a message in their language, to not have unprotected s*x and use condoms. I thought I’d speak in the language they will understand better, the way they watch OTT content and movies,” Honey Singh explained.

He claimed he had recently met with gynecologists and sexologists who told him that Gen Z suffers from sexually transmitted diseases, which prompted him to offer the advice.

“But many were very offended by that language. I apologise to all who felt bad at what I said. I didn’t intend to hurt anyone. Humans make mistakes,” he said.

The rapper promised to be more careful with his words in the future.

“I’ll try not to repeat my mistake. I’ll make sure to make a comment keeping in mind to whom I’m talking and how I say it,” he added.

Signing off, he appealed to his fans for forgiveness. “I apologise to all of you. Your Yo Yo Honey Singh, keep loving me.”
