Proposed digital service tax hike: A threat to E-Commerce growth

A new bill could cause businesses with e-commerce operations to suffer as lawmakers in Islamabad are considering imposing a 20 percent income tax on offshore digital services. According to reports, the government might also introduce a ten-year prison sentence for individuals who commit tax fraud and allow ‘junior’ Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials to arrest suspects at their discretion.

Islamabad could, as a result, grant FBR officers the authority to request that certain individuals be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL) while under investigation, allowing authorities to stop suspects from leaving the country before the resolution of their cases.

It could also be beneficial for the government, which has long struggled with individuals fleeing the country during or prior to their investigation.

A notable example is the escape of Deputy Commissioner Tashfeen Alam of Naushahro Froze, who fled Pakistan to Azerbaijan after potentially embezzling two billion rupees from the budget allocated to the Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway.

According to reports, officials from the government have revealed that Islamabad is considering increasing the penalties for non-filers and those who commit tax fraud. This development is not a surprise, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb have developed a hostile stance against all those who deliberately refuse to comply with taxation laws.

If the proposed changes take effect, authorities will also prevent individuals who are restricted from making property transactions and purchasing motor vehicles from buying tractors.

Reports have claimed that the bill only needs the approval of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to get passed. One of the proposals of the bill might financially hurt e-commerce stores in Pakistan.

The government’s decision to consider doubling the income tax rate on digital service fees might raise the costs of online advertising, website maintenance and email marketing. This might be financially unsustainable for small e-commerce stores that utilise these services.

A significant number of businesses run on slim margins as a result of the high level of competition in certain industries. For example, businesses that could be hurt are those that provide undifferentiated goods and services via their e-commerce stores. These include goods such as basic clothing and electronic accessories.

Business owners who are under investigation and need to travel extensively for work may also find their operations severely hindered. The government might have to consider relaxing the conditions that place such business owners on the ECL, as this could inadvertently hurt Pakistan’s economy.

Tan Man Neel o Neel: Episode 7 brings deep emotions

The latest episode of Tan Man Neel o Neel kept viewers hooked, stirring together all emotions from beginning to end with powerful performances and a gripping storyline.

The interaction between Ehsaan and Sonu’s mother, played by Naumaan Masood and Samiya Mumtaz, respectively, was particularly memorable and heartwarming. The two characters calmly discuss their past and how much time has passed. They agreed to move on for the sake of their children, but despite the tension, they both remained composed in the moment.

For a while, it seemed they had truly moved on, but by the end of the scene, it became clear they hadn’t. Ehsaan’s emotional breakdown outside Sonu’s house, along with Sonu’s mother quietly collapsing in her chair, was one of the most heartbreaking and raw moments in the series so far.

The episode also revealed that Ehsaan has been helping Ladoo’s (Arsal Khan) mother, though they’ve never had a romantic relationship.

Mehnaz, portrayed by Nadia Afghan, creates a simple yet beautiful moment as she retrieves warm clothes from the attic. The unique setting highlighted the drama’s attention to detail.

Kami, played by Usman Javed, is still trying to earn forgiveness from Rabi, played by Sehar Khan, but she isn’t letting him off the hook so easily. When Kami apologises for publicly accusing her, Rabi firmly demands that his apology should also be public in front of their family. Her confidence and refusal to accept disrespect are refreshing and empowering.

The bond between Sonu and Moon, played by Shuja Asad and Ali Ammar, respectively, remained strong in this episode, with their scenes radiating warmth and love.

It also appears that the darker aspect of the story is also developing as Rao Kashif and Bau Qaiser, played by Saife Hassan and Saleem Mairaj, are now working together. Their manipulative use of Moon for their political agendas threatens his chances of achieving justice, leaving viewers wondering what will happen next.

In a lighter moment, Rabi teased her mother and shared the good news that her father would no longer force her to marry Kami, ending the episode on a happy note. The chemistry between mother and daughter provided the perfect conclusion to the episode.

This episode of Tan Man Neel o Neel delivered a perfect mix of emotions, heartfelt moments, tension, joy, and sorrow. Directed by Saife Hassan and written by Mustafa Afridi, it continues to captivate its audience.

Rickshaw driver gets reward for helping Saif Ali Khan

A Mumbai auto-rickshaw driver is being praised for his quick thinking and kind act after he rushed Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan and his son Taimur Ali Khan to the hospital following a shocking attack by an intruder.

Saif Ali Khan, stabbed multiple times at his Bandra residence, was quickly rushed to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital in an auto-rickshaw with his eight-year-old son by his side. Despite the seriousness of the attack, he remained calm.

The driver, Bhajan Singh Rana, acted quickly, ensuring the father and son reached the hospital safely.

Recognizing the driver’s courage, Bhajan Singh Rana was rewarded INR 11,000 by an organization.

In an interview with Indian media, Rana expressed immense pride and joy for being part of such a crucial moment in the lives of the famous actor and his son.

“I feel very proud because I never imagined something like this would happen in my life. This recognition has brought me immense joy,” Bhajan Singh Rana stated.

Earlier, Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan looked remarkably fit in his first public appearance since getting stabbed last week after an intruder entered his Mumbai home in the early morning hours.

Despite getting stabbed six times, Saif Ali Khan looked hale and hearty and in good spirits after being discharged from Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, a hand brace and faint bandage on his neck the only reminders of his ordeal. His trademark beard was replaced by a clean shaved visage.

He waved to fans and the paparazzi, before climbing into a car where his wife Kareena Kapoor was already waiting for him in the backseat. Flashing a smile at the papps, he left in the car for home.

Doctors have said that Saif is expected to make a complete recovery.

A few days back, talking to Indian media, Bhajan Singh said, “I was going via Linkn Road, the building where he (Saif Ali Khan) lives is named Satguru Niwas. A woman came running shouting rickshaw, rickshaw, stop, and stop. She asked to stop the auto near the building gate.”

As first Bhajan Sigh didn’t recognize Saif Ali Khan and was unsure about the situation. “I did not know he was Saif Ali Khan. It was an emergency. I was nervous about who is this passenger that is getting into my auto. I was worried that I might get into trouble and that is why I was nervous,” Singh explained.

“He (Saif) was wearing a white shirt stained with blood. A child sat with him, a young man also sat with him,” Bhajan Rana Singh described.

When the auto driver asked where he should drive, Saif Ali Khan replied, “Take me to Lilavati.”

Upon reaching Lilavati Hospital, the driver recalled the scene: “A guard was called, and the hospital staff assembled. It was then that the passenger introduced himself: ‘I am Saif Ali Khan.’”

Donald Trump can become the guarantor of Imran Khan’s behaviour: Senator Mushahid Hussain

Senator Mushahid Hussain claimed on ARY News on January 20 that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lobby within President Donald Trump’s administration is stronger than the Pakistani government’s lobby, signalling hope for the possible release of incarcerated party leader Imran Khan.

“Donald Trump is not a traditional politician, and he won’t accept some file being given to him about Pakistan from the State Department. He considers his likes and dislikes only. When he sees Pakistan, he only remembers Imran Khan,” stated the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senator.

Social media blew up when Donald Trump’s close aide and envoy, Richard Grenell, demanded the release of former Prime Minister Khan in multiple X (formerly Twitter) posts.

Grenell’s multiple posts on December 16 last year calling for Khan’s release garnered hundreds of thousands of views.

The narrative gained further momentum when Matt Gaetz, another Republican and a former Trump nominee for attorney general, also wrote, “Free Imran Khan”.

The support was seen as a positive development for PTI, which had been lobbying and advocating for their leader’s release from prison since August 2023.

Many commentators and political analysts pointed out the irony of PTI trying to lobby the US to help out Imran Khan after Khan had accused Washington of conspiring against his government in 2022.

Khan’s government was removed from office in April 2022 after nearly four years in power, following a parliamentary no-confidence vote.

“I believe that Trump becoming the President of the United States is good news for everyone. He has exposed the deep state or the establishment in his country. He has made a ten-point plan for the demolition of the deep state, and by deep state, he means the CIA. Things like killing people in other countries or conducting regime changes, this is all work of CIA, which Trump is against,” stated the Senator.

He added that 25 years ago, the US President visited Pakistan to release his friend, Nawaz Sharif, “As history witnessed, Nawaz Sharif was indeed released during the Musharraf regime.”

The senator was referring to former US president Bill Clinton’s visit to Pakistan in 2000, after General Pervez Musharraf had removed Nawaz Sharif from power through a coup.

Show host Waseem Badami asked if Imran Khan would agree to remain silent without coming to power, similar to Nawaz Sharif’s decision. In response, Mushahid Hussain said, “President Trump may become the guarantor of Imran Khan’s behaviour. He could be the dealmaker.”

  • 114 percent rise in profit repatriation: A threat to Pakistan’s financial stability?

114 percent rise in profit repatriation: A threat to Pakistan’s financial stability?

The repatriation of profit on foreign investments rose by 114 percent in the first half of the current Fiscal Year (FY) 25. As per reports, profit repatriation was restricted in FY 24 as the cash-strapped nation could not afford to run its foreign reserves down.

Islamabad, however, was forced to loosen the restriction on the outflow of foreign currency because of conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Furthermore, foreign investors who had parked their funds in the country also found the financial restrictions to be harsh, as they frequently lamented Islamabad’s policy regarding repatriation.

The United Kingdom ranked first in terms of profit repatriation with an outflow of $423.7 million. China, which has a vested economic interest in Pakistan, ranked fourth, contributing only $91 million to the outflow figure.

While it seems like a good idea to restrict outflows during Pakistan’s time of crisis, financial experts have commented that it is only a temporary fix. The removal of these restrictions could encourage foreign investors as Pakistan will seem like an attractive destination for investments.

Islamabad has been attempting to attract foreign investors but with little success. Various initiatives have been set up, including Uraan Pakistan, which aims to increase the country’s investment levels.

Data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) revealed that during July-December FY 25, the outflows stood at a staggering $1.215 billion. This leaves the SBP with a reserve amount close to $11.5 to $12 billion, according to reports.

The reserves are alarmingly low for Pakistan as they are only enough to cover Pakistan’s import needs for 2.5 months. This reveals the country’s long-standing economic weakness, which stems from negative net export revenues.

The SBP wants to achieve its target reserve of $13 billion by the end of FY 25. However, with outflows growing, the SBP’s vision to grow its reserves may remain just that: A vision.

Furthermore, outflows could detrimentally impact the exchange rate, causing the rupee to weaken. This could reverse the progress of foreign reserve growth as import controls and restrictions on profit repatriation have previously played a key role in reserve growth.

This hurt the importers the most, as a depreciated rupee could procure fewer goods and services at previous prices. If importers choose to absorb the extra costs, causing their profit margins to shrink, the impact could worsen.

Another segment of the business community that will suffer are firms with debt denominated in foreign currencies. These companies will now have to foster higher profitability to be able to meet their rising interest payments. The interest payments will rise as a fall in the rupee’s value will require more currency to make payments.

Doctors have said that Saif is expected to make a complete recovery.

Earlier, Bangladeshi national Shariful Islam Shahzad has been arrested for allegedly attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan.

The friend and former co-worker of the accused, Rohmat Khan, described him as a kind-hearted man. Speaking with The Indian Express, Khan asserted that he “never imagined he could do such a big crime.”

“I have been following the news of the attack on Saif Ali Khan and kept wondering who would intrude upon such a high-profile person and launch an attack. Jitna main jaanta hoon, mujhe laga nahi wou itna barha kuch kar sakta hai (As far as I know, I never thought he could commit such a big crime),” the friend said.

According to the police, Shariful Islam Shahzad, originally from Rajabariya village in Jhalokathi district, Bangladesh, used the fake name Vijay Das to conceal his true identity. His real full name is Shariful Islam Sajjad Mohammed Rohilla Amin Fakeer.

The Bandra police informed Shahzad’s close friend, Khan, about his arrest since his family members were not in the city. Khan revealed, “He (Das) got the job through a contractor and worked with the Thane branch of Hotel Blabber All Day in the housekeeping section, while I was in the cafeteria section. He seemed to be a kind-hearted man. He never had any argument or fight with anyone and was good at his work.”

He also mentioned that Shahzad never opened up about his past, family, or his connection to Bangladesh.

According to a senior police officer, the accused confessed to the crime during interrogation. However, Shahzad’s lawyer strongly refuted the allegations, asserting, “Nothing has been recovered from my client; he is being framed.”

The lawyer argued in court that the allegations were baseless and that Shahzad was being made a scapegoat in this high-profile case because a celebrity was involved. “This case is the centre of attention because a famous individual has been targeted.”

Later, speaking to the media, the lawyer reiterated that nothing incriminating was found on Shahzad and emphasised his client’s innocence.

As per Indian media reports, Shariful Islam Shahzad has been remanded in the custody of Mumbai Police for five days as investigations continue.

  • Advance Pardon by President Joe Biden to important personalities Including Dr. Anthony Fauci: An Extraordinary Move

Advance Pardon by President Joe Biden to important personalities Including Dr. Anthony Fauci: An Extraordinary Move

President Joe Biden on Monday, January 20, 2025, forgives Dr. Anthony Fauci, General Mark Milley, and members of the January 6 Committee in an extraordinary use of the powers of the presidency in his final hours.

There is a possibility that the step is taken to save from retaliatory actions towards the trump administration.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has been the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infection Diseases from 1984 to 2022. He led epidemic American reaction during the COVID-19. Under his guidance, they played a crucial role in controlling the epidemic outbreaks and the preparation of vaccines.

However, in political circles, he had to face criticism on the basis of his policies and statements. He faced criticism, especially from the president’s supporters.

The reason for the forgiveness by President Joe Biden was to save the personalities from legal actions. Explaining the reason for this action Joe Biden says that these people have been busy in public services that’s why they should not face political cases.

New President “Donald Trump” has severely criticized these apologies and called these apologies very shameful. Donald Trump said that “he intends to forgive the people who were involved in the events of 6 January.”

He added “he will issue executive orders to change Biden’s policies”

Dr Fauci was retired from the government services in 2022. While expressing his gratitude he said that he always has been working for the betterment of public health. His mission “public service: is far away from politics.

This primitive forgiveness is unusual in the history of America. Because usually absolutions are granted to those people who already will be involved in some crime. However, Biden’s action reflects concerns that political opponents could be targeted through legal action.

In his professional life, Dr Fauci has played a crucial role in US efforts against pandemics such as HIV/AIDS, SARS, swine flu, MERS, Ebola, and COVID-19. Because of his services, in 2008 he was awarded the “Presidential Medal of Freedom” by President George W. Bush.

The main intent of President Biden behind the pardons is to protect these individuals from potential political action. So they can continue to serve and work for the betterment of the country without fear.

Champions Trophy: ICC rubbishes Indian claims of removing ‘Pakistan’ from jersey logos

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has dismissed Indian media claims that Pakistan’s name has been removed from the Champions Trophy jerseys.

According to reports, the ICC clarified that all teams are required to display the tournament logo on their shirts, which includes the name of the host country. If any team fails to comply with this rule, the ICC may take action against it.

The official logo for this year’s tournament, designed by the ICC, includes “Pakistan 2025.” Indian media, however, claims that India will avoid wearing shirts with Pakistan’s name during the tournament.

Meanwhile, sources from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) clarified that no official had spoken to the Indian media regarding the removal of the logo.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on the other hand, has refused to send captain Rohit Sharma to the tournament’s opening ceremony and captains’ meeting.

In light of India’s refusal to play in Pakistan, the Champions Trophy will follow a hybrid model. India will play its matches in Dubai, and if the country qualifies, the semi-finals or finals will also be held there.

The Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 9 this year, with Pakistan as the host and defending champion.
