These influential figures helped Lex Fridman increase his YouTube subscriber count to a stunning 4.5 million due to his ability to hold thought-provoking discussions.

    Proposed tax bill: Stricter non-filer measures set for review

    A bill concerning tax laws is set to be reviewed on Tuesday by the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance. If the legislation gets passed, non-filers will suffer as stringent restrictions will be imposed upon them.

    These restrictions will effectively block out non-filers from purchasing or registering any vehicles except for those that are 800cc or less. Furthermore, they will be unable to trade on the stock exchange over certain thresholds and will not be able to purchase property past a set limit.

    The restriction on stock market trading is expected to cause a slight slowdown in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) as a sizable amount of daily trades are made by non-filers.

    In order to appease the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Islamabad has remained unrelenting in its crusade against non-filers and tax evaders. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb have been leading the anti-non-filer campaign in an attempt to boost tax collection levels.

    According to reports, higher withholding tax rates on non-filers are not to be eliminated immediately. Rather, a phased reduction is to be followed once the bill passes.

    If the bill passes, non-filers will find their ability to perform financial transactions to be severely hindered. Lawmakers in Islamabad expect financial institutions such as banks to cooperate to ensure that the bill remains effective.

    Motor vehicle manufacturers are expected to suffer, as the bill might drop their sales volumes. Analysts predict that this may result in revenue levels for car giants such as Toyota Motors and Honda. The primary reason behind this is that these automobile companies manufacture cars that are above 800cc.

    While the bill seems like a surefire way of boosting tax collection levels by restricting the activities of non-filers, experts are outlining how they might dodge the system. For instance, the passage of the bill may cause non-filers to register cars and property that they purchase in the name of their family members. Such loopholes have historically weakened the effectiveness of tax collection improvement schemes.

    However, the bill might pose significant challenges for businesses. According to reports, the bill will allow Chief commissioners of Inland Revenue to seal business premises and seize the assets of businesses that do not comply with taxation rules on the spot.

    Business owners may now have to hire professional auditors to ensure that their operations are compliant with tax laws, thereby raising costs. More seriously, however, some analysts are outlining how granting sweeping powers to commissioners may cause a serious drop in business confidence as assets could get seized arbitrarily.

    • Executive Order 13769 (2017): Trump’s travel ban was known as Executive Order 13769, an executive order restricting entry into the US by certain foreign nationals. It was called a “Muslim ban” by many and quickly gained that title for what it did to constitute severe curtailments against countries with predominantly Muslim populations.

    PCB will give hefty bonus to foreign players in PSL 2025

    The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced significant financial support for foreign players ahead of the 2025 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). 

    According to reports, the Board will pay an additional $100,000 to each of the six high-profile foreign players who commit to participating in the tournament.

    The extra payment will come from a special fund created by the PCB for the PSL. The fund has now increased to a total of $1 million. The fund was set up as part of a deal to pay top players when the central revenue pool’s net broadcasting income reached three billion rupees.

    The fund will help cover the salaries of foreign players who have signed contracts for the PSL 2025 edition. Previously, the base salary for foreign players in the PSL draft was set at $200,000 per player, but this amount will be increased for this year’s edition.

    One of the players, David Warner, who will be joining Karachi Kings, is set to earn $300,000 for participating in the PSL, out of which $100,000 will be paid from the PCB’s special fund.

    This is the first time that PSL has offered such a financial package for its foreign players, highlighting the PCB’s commitment to attracting top-tier talent. A few years ago, the PSL Governing Council decided to allocate $500,000 annually for elite players’ salaries when the central revenue pool’s net broadcast revenue reached three billion rupees. Since this fund remained unused last year, the amount has now been increased to $1 million.

    Some of the foreign players joining PSL 2025 include big names like David Warner, Daryl Mitchell, Kane Williamson, Finn Allen, Matthew Short, Sean Abbott, Naheed Rana, Litton Das, Michael Bracewell, Roussie van der Dussen, and Corbin Bosch. These players are set to feature in the 10th edition of PSL.

    This year’s PSL will coincide with the Indian Premier League (IPL), as both leagues will overlap during their respective windows. PSL is scheduled to run from April 17 to May 22, while IPL will run from March 21 to the end of May. This overlap is expected to bring a competitive edge, as both leagues will be battling for attention during their final stages.

    With increasing financial support and top-level talent signing lucrative deals, PSL is strengthening its reputation as one of the biggest T20 leagues in the world. The PCB’s efforts to attract international talent through profitable contracts are aimed at raising PSL’s global profile while ensuring that Pakistan’s cricket benefits from the international exposure of these players.

    Bangladeshi national Shariful Islam Shahzad has been arrested for allegedly attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan.

    The friend and former co-worker of the accused, Rohmat Khan, described him as a kind-hearted man. Speaking with The Indian Express, Khan asserted that he “never imagined he could do such a big crime.”

    “I have been following the news of the attack on Saif Ali Khan and kept wondering who would intrude upon such a high-profile person and launch an attack. Jitna main jaanta hoon, mujhe laga nahi wou itna barha kuch kar sakta hai (As far as I know, I never thought he could commit such a big crime),” the friend said.

    According to the police, Shariful Islam Shahzad, originally from Rajabariya village in Jhalokathi district, Bangladesh, used the fake name Vijay Das to conceal his true identity. His real full name is Shariful Islam Sajjad Mohammed Rohilla Amin Fakeer.

    The Bandra police informed Shahzad’s close friend, Khan, about his arrest since his family members were not in the city. Khan revealed, “He (Das) got the job through a contractor and worked with the Thane branch of Hotel Blabber All Day in the housekeeping section, while I was in the cafeteria section. He seemed to be a kind-hearted man. He never had any argument or fight with anyone and was good at his work.”

    He also mentioned that Shahzad never opened up about his past, family, or his connection to Bangladesh.

    On Twitter (X), some users expressed scepticism.

    A user wrote, “He doesn’t look like the guy who escaped through the staircase! Mumbai police are doing this on behalf of Modi to pull Bangladesh down.”

    Another said, “At first, they said the accused was Shahid. Then others claimed it was Vijay Das. Now they are saying it’s MD Shariful Islam Shahzad (possibly Bangladeshi). It seems the religion card is being played more than focusing on catching the thief. How is this even possible?” 

    Another user added, “This guy doesn’t look remotely like the person going down the stairs after the assault.”

    Earlier, according to Indian media reports, Bangladeshi national Muhammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, accused of attacking Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, allegedly confessed to the crime. Police sources claim the 30-year-old admitted, saying, “Yes, I did this attack.”

    Police revealed that progress was made in the case after more than 70 hours of investigation into the attack on Khan. Shahzad was arrested approximately 35 kilometres from the actor’s residence in Bandra, Mumbai, in a forest area labour camp after a seven-hour operation based on a tip-off from a labour contractor.

    According to a senior police officer, the accused confessed to the crime during interrogation. However, Shahzad’s lawyer strongly refuted the allegations, asserting, “Nothing has been recovered from my client; he is being framed.”

    The lawyer argued in court that the allegations were baseless and that Shahzad was being made a scapegoat in this high-profile case because a celebrity was involved. “This case is the centre of attention because a famous individual has been targeted.”

    Later, speaking to the media, the lawyer reiterated that nothing incriminating was found on Shahzad and emphasised his client’s innocence.

    As per Indian media reports, Shariful Islam Shahzad has been remanded in the custody of Mumbai Police for five days as investigations continue.

    Days after former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case against them, senior journalist and analyst Dr Moeed Pirzada has alleged ‘foul play’ at the hands of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chief minister (CM) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) loyalist Ali Amin Gandapur.

    Former premier Khan and his wife were on Friday sentenced to 14 years and seven years in prison, respectively, as Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the much-delayed verdict in the case pertaining to misappropriation of funds recovered by the United Kingdom’s (UK) National Crime Agency (NCA).

    According to reporters present at the makeshift courtroom in Adiala Jail when the verdict was announced, Khan, who was “prepared for a conviction”, seemed uneasy over his wife’s sentencing that “came as a surprise”.

    Reacting to eyewitness accounts of Khan’s reaction to the verdict, journalist Moeed Pirzada has said that Bushra’s conviction caught Khan off guard, going on to allege that it was a result of KP CM Gandapur using his influence to get rid of the former first lady.

    “I have verified from multiple sources that this is actually what happened,” Pirzada said in a video, claiming that Khan had been conveyed the conditions of an alleged deal to avoid conviction in said case, but he also had the “assurance” that his wife won’t be sentenced.

    “According to my source, KP CM Ali Amin Gandapur was at the helm in getting her [Bushra] sentenced. He wanted her to get locked up… away from limelight, because she was causing him headaches.”

    He went on to claim that while all this put an end to speculations regarding Bushra Bibi’s alleged involvement with the establishment, the reason behind Gandapur’s alleged drastic step was the former first lady repeatedly challenging him and his decision-making.

    “Their rift was also witnessed during the PTI’s November march on Islamabad when Bushra Bibi refused to call off or redirect the rallies until she had spoken to Imran Khan. At the protests, CM Gandapur’s guards were also seen using foul language for Bushra Bibi, which showed what Gandapur thought of her,” he claimed, adding that the KP chief executive believes he can control the province’s politics better in Bushra’s absence.

    Pirzada went on to say that the PTI should initiate discussion to address the alleged rift and disclose the details of the situation.

    It merits a mention that political pundits have long been claiming cracks within the PTI in jailed Imran Khan’s absence, saying that the party had divided into groups led by different leaders, including Khan’s family.

    The government also claims that at least one of said groups want to keep the ousted former premier in jail so as to hijack the party.
