Legendary Filmmaker David Lynch Passes Away at 78

David Lynch passed away at the age of 78. He was a talented filmmaker, writer, and artist and is famously known for getting Oscar nominations for best director in Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and The Elephant Man. His family announced his death as a person and an artist on Facebook. A statement is written on Lynch’s Facebook page saying, “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us.”

Lynch was known for surrealism and was one of the most creative film directors in the modern world due to his eye-popping and deeply mysterious works. He was also known to combine dream sequences with strange imagery. It led him to become the master of surrealism. However, he received the Honorary Academy Award in 2019 for his long-term achievements.

Among the films that attracted large audiences were Eraserhead (1977), Lost Highway (1997), and Wild at Heart (1990), which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He was an artist who enjoyed meditating and often found talking about his films complicated and somewhat mysterious, so he frequently got involved in explaining them.

“A film or a painting, each thing is its own sort of language and it’s not right to try and say the same thing in words. The words are not there,” he told The Guardian newspaper in a 2018 interview.

Lynch’s filmmaking style gave rise to the term “Lynchian.” Vanity Fair magazine characterized it as strange, mysterious, and highly slow-motion. He used music to heighten the macabre and unsettling elements he inserted into the everyday and mundane in his films.

“A great author once said, ‘Killing anybody is terrible. When he began again, a great author talked about the business of making mood through visual and audio elements and cooperation,” said Lynch.

The New York Times glided into the style: “An eye for the absurd detail that thrusts a scene into shocking relief and a taste for risky. It often grotesque material perhaps made him Hollywood’s most revered eccentric, a kind of psychopathic Norman Rockwell.”

Mel Brooks described Lynch as “Jimmy Stewart from Mars” as a young Eagle Scout. Lynch’s creator became a counterculture icon. However, the roots were already emerging from a wholesome America.

People’s Reaction to David Lynch Death on the Internet

Social media has turned into a divisive and hazardous place for some people. In a survey on this topic, the Pew Research Center found that 64% of Americans believe that social media has had a mostly negative effect on the United States.

It might be hard to argue that the internet is not perfect. However, it might be harder to tell how much impact it has. Social media has had several negative and positive effects, such as David Lynch’s death.

As the authors of the study “Grieving Online” assert, “Grief is a taboo affair that forces individuals to come to grips with their grief alone.”

People can often feel invalidated or guilty for grieving and thus choose to go through their grief alone. Because of this, things can feel even more challenging. This could amplify if a public figure died.

Most people know that they do not know that famous person, but because of the profound impact that person’s work has on one’s life, it can sometimes feel like they did. It evokes strong feelings of loss even though there is not a real connection to discuss loss.

Social media helps people cope with this complicated emotion.

  • £190m case: Here’s how Imran Khan reacted to wife’s conviction in court

£190m case: Here’s how Imran Khan reacted to wife’s conviction in court

Former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has reacted to his and his spouse Bushra Bibi’s conviction in the 190-million-pound (Al-Qadir Trust) case. The reaction comes minutes after an accountability court in the federal capital sentenced him to 14 years in prison and his wife to seven years on Friday.

Khan and Bibi have been fined Rs. 1 million and Rs. 0.5 million, respectively. If they fail to pay the fines, the ex-prime minister will serve an additional six months, while Bushra Bibi will serve three more months.

According to the verdict, ex-PM Imran Khan has been convicted of “corrupt practices” and “misuse of authority,” while the former First Lady has been sentenced for “involvement in illegal activities.” Accountability court judge Nasir Javed Rana directed the authorities to place the Al-Qadir Trust University in the federal government’s custody.

The 148-page verdict mentioned that Bibi’s role was limited to aiding and abetting the corruption offences, which is considered a mitigating circumstance in her sentencing.

Following the announcement of the 190-million-pound verdict, she has been taken into custody.

“Bushra Bibi is entirely innocent in the Al-Qadir Trust case. The only purpose for including her in the case was to increase pressure on me. Even before this, Bushra Bibi was unjustly jailed for nine months,” the official account of former Premier on X (formerly Twitter) posted a message after the Al-Qadir Trust case verdict.

In October 2024, Bushra Bibi was granted bail after nine months of incarceration in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, in the Tosha Khana case.

Imran Khan stated in his official X handle: “By convicting me in the baseless Al-Qadir (University) Trust case they [installed regime] will make a mockery of themselves all over the world and cause themselves deep embarrassment. My sentencing is being sought in a case where neither have I derived a single penny of personal gain, nor the government has suffered a single penny of financial loss.”

“We will be writing a letter to Justice Aminuddin Khan [the head of the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench] to hear our petition about human rights violations. Our innocent people were subjected to brutal mental and physical torture while in military custody. Hearings on our petitions must be made a top priority. As we are not getting justice from any court in Pakistan, we have completed preparations for sending letters to international human rights organizations and to the United Nations in this regard. Qazi Faez Isa and Aamir Farooq have consistently acted as the establishment’s opening batsmen, and the newly formed constitutional bench is merely an extension of this.” read the post on Khan’s X account.

The £190 million case involves allegations that Imran Khan and others, in 2019, adjusted Rs 50 billion — equivalent to £190 million at the time — sent by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to the Pakistani government during his tenure as the country’s Prime Minister.

The amount in question pertains to assets of a property tycoon, which were seized by the NCA during PTI’s rule. The British crime agency had stated that the amount was to be passed to the Government of Pakistan, as its settlement with the Pakistani property tycoon was “a civil matter, and does not represent a finding of guilt.”

  • BCCI issues 10 strict rules for players ahead of Champions Trophy

BCCI issues 10 strict rules for players ahead of Champions Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a ten-point guideline for India’s contracted men’s players to encourage discipline, unity, and a positive team atmosphere.

This move is in response to recent poor performances in Test matches. The document warns that failing to follow these rules could lead to serious consequences, including disciplinary action, exclusion from domestic cricket and the IPL, and cuts to central contract payments.

The new policy, titled ‘Policy Document for Team India,’ takes effect immediately and was shared with the players on Thursday.

Policy Document for Team India (Senior Men)

    1. Participation in Domestic Matches is mandatory for players to remain eligible for selection in the national team and for central contracts, as per BCC guidelines. This policy ensures that players remain connected to the domestic cricket ecosystem, fostering talent development, maintaining match fitness, and strengthening the overall domestic structure. It also inspires emerging players by providing them opportunities to compete alongside top cricketers, ensuring continuity in talent progression. Any exceptions to this mandate will be considered only under extraordinary circumstances and will require formal notification and approval from the Chairman of the Selection Committee, ensuring fairness and transparency in the process.

    2. Players Traveling Separately with Families All players are expected to travel with the team to and from matches and practice sessions. Separate travel arrangements with families are discouraged to maintain discipline and team cohesion. Exceptions, if any, must be pre-approved by the Head Coach and Chairman of the Selection Committee

    3. Excess Baggage Limit Players are required to adhere to the specified baggage limits shared with the team. Any excess baggage costs will need to be borne by the individual player. This policy helps streamline logistics and avoid unnecessary expenses.
    Baggage policy

Away long-duration tours (more than 30 days):
Players -5 pieces (3 suitcases, two kit bags) OR up to 150kgs. Support staff – 2 pieces (2 big and one small suitcases) of up to 80 kgs.

Away short-duration tours (less than 30 days):
Rayers-4 pieces (2 suitcases, 2 kit bags) OR up to 120kgs. Support staff pieces (2 suitcases) OR upto 60 kgs

    Home series:
    Players-4 pieces (2 suitcases+ 2 kit bag) OR upto 120kgs. Support staff-2 pieces (2 suitcases) OR upto 60 kg

    4. Restriction on Individual Staff on Tour/Series Personal staff (e.g., personal managers, chefs, assistants and security) are to be restricted on tours or series unless explicitly approved by the BCCI. This ensures that the focus remains on team operations and minimizes logistical challenges. – this has to be done away with.

    5. Sending Bags Separately to the Centre of Excellence Players must coordinate with team management regarding equipment and personal items being sent to the Centre of Excellence, Bengaluru. Any additional costs incurred due to separate arrangements will be the player’s responsibility.

    6. Leaving Practice Sessions Early All players are required to stay for the entire duration of scheduled practice sessions and travel together to and from the venue. This rule ensures commitment and fosters a strong work ethic within the team.

    7. Personal Shoots During Series/Tour Players are not permitted to engage in personal shoots or endorsements during an ongoing series or tour. This avoids distractions and ensures that the players’ focus remains on cricket and team responsibilities.

    8. Family Travel Policy The family travel policy ensures a balance between players’ personal well-being and team commitments:
Eligibility: Players absent from India for more than 45 days during overseas tours can be joined by their partners and children (under 18) for one visit per series (format-wise) of up to a two-week period.

    * Provisions: The BCCI will cover shared accommodation with the player for the Visitors’ Period. All other expenses are to be borne by the player.

    * Coordination: Visits must be scheduled at a single time on dates agreed upon by the coach, captain, and GM of operations.
. Exceptions: Any deviation from this policy must be pre-approved by the Coach, Captain and GM Operations. Additional expenses outside the visitors’ period will not be covered by the BCCI.

    9. Participation in BCCI’s Official Shoots and Functions Players are required to be available for BCCI’s official shoots, promotional activities, and functions. These engagements are essential for maintaining the BCCI’s commitments to stakeholders and promoting the game effectively.

    10. Players Returning Home if Matches End Early Players are required to stay with the team until the scheduled end of the match series or tour, regardless of whether matches conclude earlier than planned. This ensures unity, fosters team bonding, and avoids disruption to team dynamics.

These rules were introduced amid the Indian cricket team’s struggles with poor performances in recent Test matches.

They lost to New Zealand 0-3 at home, and then Australia defeated India 1-3 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Sonya Hussyn and Imran Ashraf join forces for drama Masoom

Drama stars Imran Ashraf and Sonya Hussyn are set to captivate audiences in HUM TV’s upcoming drama serial, Masoom, directed by Barkat Siddiqui.

The Namak Haram actor shared a stunning behind-the-scenes (BTS) picture from the drama shoot on Instagram, captioning it: “She is not just an actress she is a powerhouse

Bass Thora sa intezar MAZAY ANAY WALAY HEIN INSHALLAH

    Masoom on HUM TV

    Directed by @barkatsidiki_official”

Earlier, during his program Mazak Raat, a member of the audience asked the show’s host, Imran Ashraf Agha, and actor Mustafa Hassan, which actress they would like to work with in their next project.

Ashraf revealed that he would like to collaborate with Bollywood actress Tamannaah Bhatia for a movie.

“As far as I am concerned, I want my next project to be with Tamannaah Bhatia,” he replied.

“I have never worked with the talented actress Saba Qamar. It would be a great honour for me if she agrees to work with me,” the Rasq-e-Bismil actor added.

Tamannah Bhatia has starred in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films.

Her many films include Paiyaa, Himmatwala, Ayan, Jailer, Entertainment, Baahubali 2, Sikandar Ka Muqaddar, Aranmania 4, Vedaa, Rebel, Happy Days, Babli Bouncer, Bhola Shankar, Racha, Chanda Sa Roshan, Aagadu, and Siruthai.

Actress Sonya Hussyn is setting up her career to be that of a thespian with the wide range of characters she has played on screen. In a post yesterday, she revealed that her next character, Murshid, is an addict, and debuted her look on Instagram.

Earlier, in an interview with ‘Independent Urdu,’ Sonya talked about her career and who she would like to work with. She mentioned Ali Zafar as her favorite on-screen hero, saying he has a special charm.

“I never really thought about it, but when it comes to movies, I find Ali Zafar very charming. He has that charisma of a movie hero. There are many good actors, like Fawad Khan, who also have charm, but when it comes to acting, I would choose Ali Zafar,” she said.

But things got interesting when Sonya talked about her experiences with offers from the Indian film industry. She revealed that she was approached for three different projects. “I have received three film offers from India. One was a Shakespeare screen adaptation of Measure for Measure. The other was a sequel to some old Santosh Kumar film – I can’t recall its name,” she noted.

One offer, in particular, caught her attention—a film with the famous Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi. “For that one, I even had a meeting with the relevant people but then the exchange with India stopped altogether,” she explained, referring to the stop in collaborations between India and Pakistan after the Uri attack and the subsequent ban on Pakistani artists working in India.

  • ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘Twin Peaks’ director David Lynch dies at 78

‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘Twin Peaks’ director David Lynch dies at 78

David Lynch — the singular and surreal director of “Mulholland Drive” and television’s “Twin Peaks,” who depicted the darkness lurking beneath the wholesome surface of American life — has died. He was 78 years old.

An enigmatic artist who turned his hand to arthouse and blockbuster film, television, painting and music, Lynch was considered one of US cinema’s great auteurs.

“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” read a statement on his official Facebook page.

The cause and location of death were not specified. Lynch, who lived in Los Angeles, had suffered from emphysema after years of heavy smoking.

He emerged on the US indie scene with his creepy 1977 horror “Eraserhead,” and drew both acclaim and a cult following with sadomasochist mystery “Blue Velvet” (1986) and surreal thriller “Mulholland Drive” (2001).

But he may be best remembered for his mesmerizing 1990s series “Twin Peaks,” which paved the way for many a prestige television drama.

With four Oscar nominations, including a trio of best director nods, the filmmaker recognizable by his shock of white hair took home just one honorary statuette, in 2019.

    – ‘Fearless’ –

Tributes from across Hollywood swiftly poured in.

Steven Spielberg called Lynch “a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” while Francis Ford Coppola said he was “astounded and heartbroken” by the “profound loss of the great David Lynch.”

Fellow director Ron Howard hailed “a gracious man and fearless artist” who “proved that radical experimentation could yield unforgettable cinema.”

Kyle MacLachlan, who starred in “Twin Peaks” and several Lynch films, called Lynch “an enigmatic and intuitive man with a creative ocean bursting forth inside of him.”

“I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision,” he wrote on Instagram.

Born in small-town Montana in 1946, the son of an agricultural research scientist, Lynch travelled extensively around Middle America as a young man.

He attended fine arts colleges in Boston and Philadelphia before joining the American Film Institute, where he began work on “Eraserhead.”

That was followed by 1980’s “The Elephant Man,” also shot in black-and-white and deeply tragic, but decidedly more mainstream and accessible, earning his first best director Oscar nomination.

Based on the diary of Joseph Merrick, the so-called “Elephant Man” born in the United States in 1862 with a condition that gave him a severely deformed physical appearance, it starred Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt.

An attempt to adapt sci-fi novel “Dune” in 1984 would be one of Lynch’s less well-received efforts, though it still has its admirers.

Lynch pivoted back to his arthouse roots with “Blue Velvet,” about a young man whose discovery of a severed ear leads him to the sinister side of his small town.

It starred Isabella Rossellini — whom Lynch dated for several years — and is often heralded as his greatest work, earning a second Academy Award nomination for directing.

After winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes with “Wild at Heart” in 1990, Lynch turned to television with “Twin Peaks,” which captivated and shocked Americans from its 1990 launch.

The tale of a tight-knit northwestern town reacting to the rape and murder of a popular but troubled high school girl, it was years ahead of its time.

But ratings plummeted as the show’s second season lost direction after the purported meddling of ABC executives, and it was cancelled. An even darker 1992 prequel film was initially panned, but is now considered a classic.

    – ‘Big hole’ –

In 2001, Lynch made his second undisputed masterpiece, “Mulholland Drive,” which brought a third best director Oscar nomination.

Naomi Watts plays a naive actress who meets a mysterious brunette suffering amnesia, before everything gets inverted in an astonishing twist that has fans arguing over its meaning to this day.

Film writer David Thomson called it “one of the greatest films ever made about the cultural devastation caused by Hollywood.”

Lynch’s final full-length feature film was 2006’s inscrutable “Inland Empire,” although he returned to the world of “Twin Peaks” with an acclaimed sequel series for cable network Showtime in 2017.

He never retired, continuing to produce short films, music and paintings, and practice his beloved daily transcendental meditation, from his studio and home — appropriately located just outside Hollywood, on Mulholland Drive.

He regularly posted whimsical weather updates to YouTube, underlining the optimistic and playful man behind his often troubling art.

“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us,” said his family’s statement.

“But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’”

It was released to accompany the music album Balloonerism, Miller’s last non-live album before he died in 2018. His family previously released a statement revealing Mac Miller’s plans for the upcoming project. According to recordings, the estate claims that Mac got the artwork for the project and began working on it. Mac Miller could release some unofficial versions he seamlessly put together years in advance.

Mac suggested arguments identifying the musical breadth and fearlessness but could never formalize them. It was this album that Mac Miller had to release. It made sense that he and many fans were curious to collaborate on the compilation Balloonerism, which features visuals that complement the music.

Ceasefire Gaza Agreement Phases: Will it Bring the Peace?

Hamas and Israel have come to terms on a ceasefire Gaza agreement after over 460 days of warfare that has crippled Gaza. This is as reported by the United States, Qatar, and Israel. Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed announced that the ceasefire Gaza would go into effect on Sunday. He also said that several procedural agreements with Israel and Hamas were being arranged. However, he estimated that an Israeli government vote would occur that Thursday.

There will be the release of both Israeli and Gazan prisoners as part of the agreement. Meanwhile, the bloodshed in Gaza will come to an end. Palestinians who have been displaced will finally be able to return to their homes, even if most of their homes still stand following the destruction campaign of Israel.

The First Phase of the Ceasefire Gaza Agreement

The first phase will start with a limited prisoner swap alongside the partial Israeli troop withdrawal and a massive increase in aid to the Gaza region. The Israeli army has stated that this phase will last for six weeks.

Let me give more context to what happened on October 7, 2023. The Hamas attack on southern Israel led to the capturing of 33 Israeli civilians, including women, children, and people above 50 years of age. As a result of an agreement to provide aid to 1000 civilians who were captured in October, Palestine was also forced to make some compromises to prevent an apparent defeat. The exchange would also be beneficial for other civilians. The greater exchange will encompass the release of Palestinian civilians who are serving life sentences in Israeli prisons.

Israel is also expected to change its strategy during the prisoner exchange and move its forces from Gaza’s borders to an area roughly 700 meters inland because of the use of excessive force.

Although the change was made in Israel, some places, like the Netzarim Corridor, were left out. However, Israel provided civilians with humanitarian help after repeatedly warning that a famine was spreading throughout the Gaza North. They allowed troops to cross the checkpoint while managing a 600-vessel control system in a single day to tackle this issue.

Israel will open the Rafah crossing with Egypt seven days after the first phase starts and will let injured Palestinians depart the Gaza Strip for medical assistance.

    Second Phase

Suppose everything goes according to plan for the second stage. In that case, every other prisoner, mostly male soldiers, will be freed by Hamas in exchange for more Palestinians jailed within the Israeli prison system. As per the document currently there, Israel would withdraw completely from Gaza.

However, the conditions that remain to be voted upon by the Israeli cabinet stand in contradiction with the adamant positions of several far-right-wing cabinet members in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet. He is still advocating for their former prime minister and positions. This contrast is specifically evident, as Netanyahu has made statements about Hamas inhabiting Gaza to continue the conflict.

    Third Phase

Details about a third stage are unclear. Suppose the requirements of the second stage are satisfied. In that case, the third stage will involve the transfer of the remaining hostages after implementing the rehabilitation plan, which is to be internationally supervised and will last between three and five years.

It has not been agreed on who will control Gaza in the events that follow the ceasefire Gaza. The US has advocated for a new version of the Palestinian Authority to prevent it.

Mark Carney Sets Sights on Becoming Canada’s Next Prime Minister

Mark Carney is officially running for the leadership of the ruling Chuadrian party, which replaces Post Justin Trudeau. He is the former leader of the Bank of Canada. Carney launched his campaign for the party leadership on Thursday at a rally in Edmonton, Alberta.

“I am back home in Edmonton to announce my candidacy for the leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister of Canada,” Mark Carney states after being endorsed by liberal lawmakers and supporters.

The 59-year-old is emerging as one of the top contenders for Trudeau’s position. He served as governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 before becoming governor of the Bank of England until 2020. He then chased the ‘Governor’ title of The Bank of England until 2020. In early January, Trudeau resigned from his position because of the revolving pressure and declining support from the public. However, during his resignation, he added that he would continue to work for the party until they find his successor, which is expected in March.

While he most recently served as Trudeau’s economic advisor, Mark Carney is the only Liberal leadership candidate who does not hold an elective office in Trudeau’s government. He has portrayed himself as an outsider with much economic experience to offer a country suffering from a slow economy.

According to Liberal Party bylaws, anyone who aspires to a leadership role can nominate themselves. However, they must also run for a seat in Parliament in the upcoming election. Mark Carney claims to plan to do so.

Mr. Carney’s speech to Canadians listed the nation’s problems, including the housing affordability crisis, stagnant wages, and climate change. Too many are being left behind,” he said.

He also identified the potential tariff threat from the newly elected president, Donald Trump. Trump has even threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods.

“I have helped to manage several crises. Moreover, I have been involved in saving two economies,” said Mr. Carney. “I know how business works and how to make it work for you.”

Harvard and Oxford-educated Mr. Carney possesses a strong economic background in this particular race. He worked for the investment bank Goldman Sachs before being called to serve Canada from 2008 onward. From 2008 onwards, Canada was the first economy to raise interest rates. He was appointed governor of the Bank of England during his transfer to London, a position he left in 2020.

He offered recommendations to help the UK economy during Brexit while in this position. However, his initial actions were deemed unduly political.

Mr. Carney has been advising Trudeau on economic affairs lately. He criticized the sitting individual for fumbling on that file.

“I know I am not the only Liberal in Canada who believes that the Prime Minister and his team would too often let their attention slip from the economy,” he said.

Members of Parliament wishing to enter the Liberal leadership race as Mr. Carney’s opponents include several incumbent members of Parliament.

Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland will announce her bid within days.
