Pakistan, Iraq eye stronger economic ties

Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan is attempting to boost economic ties with Iraq after signing a protocol to increase cooperation, highlighting its significance to the relationship between both countries.

Pakistan and Iraq have displayed their commitment to strengthen their partnership by following an agreement to collaborate in a diverse set of fields, including tourism, health, education, and trade.

One of the goals is to expand religious tourism, as large throngs of pilgrims flock to Iraq seasonally. The Middle Eastern country will consequently benefit from the increased inflow of Pakistani citizens, bringing with them funds to purchase Iraqi goods and services.

However, analysts predict that true trade gains can only be achieved through the exchange of goods. According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity, Iraq’s export revenues stood at a staggering $123 billion in 2022, with recent figures hovering close to $100 billion.

Iraq’s primary export is petroleum, constituting 97 percent of the country’s exports. It already exports its petroleum to Pakistan’s neighbours, with India and China accounting for 33.5 percent and 30.6 percent of Iraq’s crude oil exports, respectively.

Given that Pakistan is closer to Iraq than its other trade partners in the region, experts argue that it will be cheaper for Pakistan to import Iraqi petroleum. With Brent prices up by approximately 3.5 percent in the past five days and an upward trend predicted under Donald Trump’s threat to sanction Russia, it will be in Pakistan’s best interest to secure a source of petroleum that can be transported cost-effectively.

The commerce minister, however, is more interested in boosting export revenues for Pakistan and is already urging Iraqi authorities to ease visa restrictions for Pakistani businesspersons, as per Dawn.

Iraq imports approximately one billion dollars worth of rice and textiles each. Currently, Iraq imports approximately 60 and 32 percent of its rice from Thailand and India, respectively. It also imports a little under one percent of its rice from Pakistan, which reflects Pakistan’s huge potential to enter the market.

The figures for Iraqi textile imports are similar to China, catering to the Middle Eastern countries’ textile consumption. However, Pakistan could leverage its cost-effective labour to secure contracts from Iraqi importers with a lower per capita income on average as opposed to other countries that export their goods to Iraq.

  • When Atif helped Hamza Ali Abbasi talk to Naimal Khawar during Hajj

When Atif helped Hamza Ali Abbasi talk to Naimal Khawar during Hajj

Who would have thought legendary singer Atif Aslam would be the glue that helped keep actor Hamza Ali Abbasi and Naimal Khawar in touch?

But that is exactly what happened during the star singer and actor’s unforgettable Hajj trip together before Abbasi got married.

In a recent video as part of his digital project ‘Borderless World’, Atif recalled how he became Abbasi’s go-to person during the pilgrimage in 2019.

He said he remembered when Naimal messaged him because Abbasi didn’t have his phone with him.

“He took my phone and went to the side. I remember the conversations… ‘When is the wedding? Don’t cut your hair… don’t cut your hair’,” Atif said in the video alongside Abbasi and his now-wife Naimal.

Confirming Atif’s side of the story, Abbasi said he remembered it all. “I remember that entire phase… he [Atif] was [the] means of communication between me and Naimal.”

He went on to recall how he wasn’t even prepared for the trip.

“I didn’t even have a soap, and he gave it to me. I didn’t have a brush either… he gave me that too. I didn’t even have slippers and he gave me those as well,” Abbasi said while pointing at Atif.

He went on to say that the star singer was his wingman on Hajj and they now had a “bond for life”.

Earlier, in an interview with Amna Haider Isani’s Haute Talk, Abbasi talked about the challenges he faced in love and relationships before meeting his wife Naimal Khawar.

The Legends of Maula Jatt actor revealed that he had never truly experienced love “in the right way” before finding his soulmate.

“In life, I had never experienced love in the right way and I was never able to truly love [someone]. I had many bad experiences and I believe the fault was mostly mine. I wasn’t mature enough. I still don’t think I’m mature enough to say I’ve grown up,” he said.

“I’ve broken hearts and my own heart was broken too. I feel ashamed for hurting people,” the actor said while reflecting on his past.

After going through so many hardships Abbasi said, he turned to faith and made a sincere prayer.

“I prayed, ‘Oh Allah, I’ve never experienced true love, and I never thought of marriage.’ Then I chose a path and prayed for love or marriage. I didn’t know how to go about it but I trusted Allah, and I think my prayer was accepted. Allah took my hand and led me to love a person in a way that I had no control over. I couldn’t control myself and it was happening on autopilot.”

  • Punjab gears up for crackdown on wildlife abuse, illegal pets

Punjab gears up for crackdown on wildlife abuse, illegal pets

The Punjab government is planning to establish special courts to tackle wildlife violations, it emerged Wednesday.

As per the details, the Punjab Assembly’s Standing Committee on Wildlife has announced the setting up of special courts to take severe action against those committing violence against wildlife.

The move has come after amendments were made to the Wildlife Act of 1974, keeping in view the reports of brutal killings of endangered species such as striped hyenas, grey wolves and leopards in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur.

Earlier, the Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department had also proposed changes to wildlife law to regulate the rising trend of keeping large cats, including lions, tigers and cheetahs, as pets.

“The Punjab Assembly’s Standing Committee approved amendments to the Wildlife Protection Act,” Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said in a post on X. She added that the government had decided to establish special courts to address crimes against wildlife, which includes both abuse and illegal possession.

“Violators of wildlife protection laws will face fines of up to Rs 500,000,” the post said.

In the same post, the minister said that a complaint line, 1107, had also been established to report problems pertaining to wildlife.

Additionally, in the meeting of the Punjab Assembly’s standing committee, a new board called “Protected Areas and Wildlife Management” was approved to oversee these efforts. Meanwhile, special centres will also be set up for the breeding, treatment and protection of wildlife.

“A hospital costing Rs1.47 billion will also be built for the treatment of wild animals,” reports quoted the minister as telling the committee earlier.

“A comprehensive project has been launched in Punjab at Rs 1.73 billion for the protection of wildlife and the promotion of global tourism,” she said, adding that Achhali, Bansara Gali and Changa Manga forests will be used to promote tourism.

It merits a mention that the amendments to the act have been approved after 14 years. Last changes to the act were made in 2007. The Punjab government has also announced the Chief Minister Wildlife Rescue Force for protecting wildlife.

With this force, the government is aiming to address a longstanding gap in wildlife conservation in the province.

  • Top English all-rounder skips first-class cricket for PSL

Top English all-rounder skips first-class cricket for PSL

English cricketer James Vince has decided to skip first-class cricket for the 2025 season to participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He made this decision despite the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) new rules regarding No-Objection Certificates (NOCs).

Vince will continue to lead Hampshire’s T20 team but has stepped down as club captain after nine years and will not participate in the County Championship this summer.

The 33-year-old has been retained by Karachi Kings ahead of the PSL draft. In November, the ECB announced that it would issue No-Objection Certificates (NOCs)—required for players to join overseas leagues—only to white-ball players for tournaments held during the English cricket season.

With the PCB moving the PSL to April-May, Vince had the choice to either miss the PSL and lose out on the financial opportunity or change his Hampshire contract to focus solely on white-ball cricket. He opted for the latter, a decision the club confirmed on Wednesday.

Vince is the first major player to make a big career decision in response to the ECB’s new policy. While unlikely to add to his 13 Test caps at age 33, his decision is significant. He has been a key player for Hampshire since 2015, scoring 29 centuries and averaging 41.22 in his 197 first-class games.

Meanwhile, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, signed by Peshawar Zalmi, may follow Vince’s lead by switching to a white-ball contract to participate in the PSL. He is currently in talks with Somerset and the ECB for clarification.

A number of players have been upset since the ECB announced its new policy in November, with some even threatening to take legal action.

The ECB, however, has remained firm in its decision. Chief Executive Richard Gould stated that the policy is supposed to protect English cricket and prioritise the sport’s overall interests over individual players’ preferences.

  • Messi gearing up for Barcelona return in 2025?

Messi gearing up for Barcelona return in 2025?

Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi might return to his former club, FC Barcelona, on loan in a surprising move. His contract with Inter Miami runs until December 2025, but reports suggest that Messi could sign a new deal with the club.

Under Major Soccer League (MLS) rules, the football star could be loaned out during the off-season, which runs from November to March.

If Messi extends his contract with the Florida team until 2026, he could retire at the end of the American season. This would also put him in great shape for the 2026 World Cup, which Canada, the U.S., and Mexico will host.

A special clause in Messi’s contract could allow this move, similar to how Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned to Arsenal and AC Milan on loan.

Messi left Barcelona in 2021 amid the club’s financial issues. Since then, there have been talks of his possible return. After his departure, he spent two years at Paris Saint Germain before joining Inter Miami.

  • Sher Afzal Marwat to file £5 million defamation case against Adil Raja

Sher Afzal Marwat to file £5 million defamation case against Adil Raja

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat claimed on Tuesday that he will file a five-million-pound defamation lawsuit against YouTuber Adil Raja.

Speaking to a private news channel, Marwat revealed that he will soon visit the United Kingdom (UK) to file cases against those involved in editing his fake videos, saying, “In Pakistan, I might meet DG FIA tomorrow […] it will take two to three days to initiate probe (against individuals involved in spreading AI video).”

YouTuber Adil Raja and Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Sher Afzal Marwat have previously exchanged a war of words over party policy.

In November 2023, Raja and Haider Raza Mehdi were handed 14 and 12 years of jail sentence, respectively, following their Field General Court Martial for “inciting sedition”, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The military media wing, in a statement, said that both retired officers were convicted and sentenced “under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952 for the charges of inciting sedition among army personnel from the discharge of duties and violation of the provisions of Official Secrets Act, 1923 related to espionage and acts prejudicial to the safety and interest of the state”.

To a question on whether Marwat responded to the show cause notice on social media or submitted it to party leaders, he stated, “I will ask Barrister Gohar Sahab (party chairman) about it. If he (Barrister Gohar) leaves it up to me, then I will share my response on social media.”

Marwat, however, stated that sharing the show-cause answer on social media would create many new controversies. “I will respond as a lawyer,” he added.

PTI Additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi recently issued a show cause notice to Marwat over violating party policy by making “adverse and disparaging remarks” about the party’s Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and the ongoing negotiations with the government.

“You have, amongst others, made disparaging remarks against the Secretary General of PTI and even made adverse comments on the ongoing negotiations. This is clear violation of the Party Policy and Instructions issued by Founding Chairman, Imran Khan,” the notice reads.

Earlier this month, while appearing on a private news channel, Marwat challenged Salman Akran Raja’s position in the party when the latter downplayed Marwat’s remarks on the party founder the same day.

Marwat had said that according to the party constitution, Salman Akram Raja cannot become the party’s secretary general. “Only an elected person who has contested the intra-party election is eligible for the position of party secretary-general,” he explained.

He went on to say that Gohar Khan and Firdous Shamim Naqvi are public officeholders and that “Salman Akram Raja is a stranger [to the party].”

  • I don’t disown my people who made mistakes on May 9: Ali Amin Gandapur

I don’t disown my people who made mistakes on May 9: Ali Amin Gandapur

Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Ali Amin Gandapur, stated in an interview on ARY News that he does not disown Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers who made “mistakes,” referring to their involvement in the May 9 events.

“There are many of our [PTI] people who were uninformed or made mistakes, but I never disown them. They were my people. They were our party’s workers,” stated the CM KP.

Programme host Waseem Badami then asked Gandapur whether he believed those individuals should be punished or forgiven, to which Gandapur replied, “It is straightforward. Whatever the law says, the punishment should be according to the crime committed.

“I own them because if my worker has crossed a red line for any reason, whether it is ignorance, immaturity or emotions, there is a relative punishment in the law for crossing that line. That lawful punishment should be given to them.”

The Chief Minister, however, asserted that fairness does not justify unjust punishments, which must not be handed out to innocent people.

Badami also asked why Gandapur and his party did not publicly apologise for the May 9 accused if he accepted that they were “his people. “

CM KP replied with a stern expression, recalling that “my leader,” Imran Khan, had stated he was ready to be arrested. However, the manner of his arrest by the Rangers on May 9, 2023, within the court premises, was bound to provoke a reaction.

He added, “He is an internationally renowned leader, and they broke the windows, grabbed Imran Khan by the collar in front of everyone, and dragged him to the vehicle. This was a deliberate provocation, playing with the emotions of the people. It’s natural that, in such a protest, some individuals might cross a few lines. But does that mean they should be labelled as terrorists?”

As many as 25 civilians allegedly involved in the May 9 riots were sentenced by the military courts in December 2024. The sentences ranged from two to ten years and were handed out following the civilians’ court martial.

Previously, the seven-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court on December 13 had allowed military courts to announce the decision of under custody civilians about the May 9 incidents.

“On May 9, the nation witnessed politically provoked violence and arson at multiple places, marking a dark chapter in the history of Pakistan,” announced the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) following the military courts’ verdict.

  • Woman divorces millionaire for AI-generated Brad Pitt with cancer

Woman divorces millionaire for AI-generated Brad Pitt with cancer

A French woman who revealed on television how she had lost her life savings to scammers posing as Brad Pitt, has faced a wave of online harassment and mockery, leading the interview to be withdrawn on Tuesday.

The woman, named as Anne, told the “Seven to Eight” programme on the TF1 channel that she had believed she was in a romantic relationship with the Hollywood star, leading her to divorce her husband and transfer 830,000 euros ($850,000).

The scammers used fake social media and WhatsApp accounts, as well as AI image-creating technology to send Anne what appeared to be selfies and messages from Pitt.

    1736936414-YAWPDTEUUX.jpg

To extract money, they pretended that the 61-year-old actor needed money to pay for kidney treatment, with his bank accounts supposedly frozen because of divorce proceedings with his ex-wife Angelina Jolie.

Anne, a 53-year-old interior decorator with mental health problems, spent a year and half believing she was communicating with Pitt and only realised she had been scammed when news emerged of Pitt’s real-life relationship with girlfriend Ines de Ramon.

“The story broadcast this Sunday has resulted in a wave of harassment against the witness,” TF1 presenter Harry Roselmack wrote on his X account on Tuesday. “For the protection of victims, we have decided to withdraw it from our platforms.”

Anne was said by the channel at the time of its broadcast to have been suffering from severe depression and received hospital treatment.

The interview, in which she was filmed openly and even shared family photos with reporters, went viral on Monday.

It sparked a deluge of mocking comments and jokes, but some online critics accused TF1 of failing to protect a vulnerable individual who might not have been unaware of the consequences of going public.

Toulouse Football Club tweeted that “Brad told us that he would be at the stadium on Wednesday” for the team’s next match before withdrawing the message and apologising.

Netflix France also posted on social media promoting “four films to see with Brad Pitt (really) for free”.

Romantic scams have been a feature of the internet since the advent of email, but experts say artificial intelligence (AI) has increased the risk of identity theft, hoaxes and fraud online.

Anne told TF1 that she was first contacted by someone posing as Pitt’s mother shortly after she began using Instagram for the first time while on a ski trip with her family in France.

“She told me that her son needed someone like me,” Anne explained.

The scammers messaged her again several days afterwards, this time posing as Pitt.

“At first I said to myself that it was fake, that it’s ridiculous,” Anne explained to TF1. “But I’m not used to social media and I didn’t really understand what was happening to me.”

“I ask myself why they chose me to do such harm like this?” she continued. “I’ve never harmed anyone. These people deserve hell.”
