Man who shaved daughter’s head in Karachi granted bail

The man accused of shaving his daughter’s head and keeping her in confinement has been granted bail by a judicial magistrate in Karachi.

Along with the father, four other members of the family have also been released.

The police investigating team presented the victim’s father Niaz Husain, her relatives including uncle Kaleem Husain and three women—Zubaida, Shakeela, and Kinza Fatima—before the judicial magistrate in a Malir court to ask for a physical remand.

The Investigating Officer officially requested the court to remand the suspects to police custody for two weeks.

However, the judicial magistrate rejected the request, granting bail to the suspects, stating that the sections invoked in the FIR are bailable offences.

The court also ordered the suspects to submit surety bonds of Rs20,000 each, along with personal bonds.

The court order stated, “Since the alleged sections are bailable in nature, the accused are offered bail subject to furnishing surety bonds in the sum of Rs. 20,000 each and PR bonds of an equivalent amount.”

Furthermore, the order said that if the suspects fail to provide the required surety bonds, they will be remanded to jail custody.

The father and the relatives were arrested by the police on charges of detaining the victim and shaving her head as punishment for wanting to marry of her own choice.

Naz Fatima, who works as a nurse at the Ojha campus of the Dow University of Health Sciences, was forcefully confined to her father’s home.

Quaidabad SHO Farasat Shah said that after being informed, a police team raided the house, recovered the victim and arrested four suspects, including the patriarch of the house, Naz Fatima’s father.

The police informed the media that after being recovered, the victim later registered a case against her father Niaz Husain, uncle Kaleem Husain and others under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 337-V (Arsh for hair), 337-A-I (punishment of shajjah) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Naz stated in the FIR that her parents separated around seven months ago, after which she, along with her three sisters, began living with their mother in a rented house in Qadhafi Town.  Her father had been pestering her and her sisters to move in with him in Daud Chali, Quaidabad.

However, on December 12, her father beat her and her sisters, prompting them to temporarily seek refuge at her friend’s house in Green Town.

On December 20, Naz’s father, accompanied by her uncle and other relatives, stormed into her friend’s house in the afternoon, beat her, tore her clothes and shaved her head.

Then, they forcibly took her to his house in Quaidabad, where she was held in confinement until she managed to contact her lawyer.

Naz’s lawyer then reported her ordeal to the police, and she was subsequently recovered from wrongful confinement.

  • Student gang-raped in Multan’s Nishtar Medical University

Student gang-raped in Multan’s Nishtar Medical University

A student of Multan’s Nishtar Medical University (NMU) was reportedly kidnapped from the university campus and gang raped by two men.

Media reports suggest that the prime suspect, who kidnapped the student, is an employee of the university, while the second suspect is his friend.

An initial investigation by the police says that the suspects drove the girl to an unknown location, away from the university premises and raped her.

Dawn quotes Multan Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sohail Chaudhry as saying that the police acted promptly upon receiving the information and arrested the two suspects.

Dawn’s Asif Chaudhry reported that a senior NMU doctor said that the girl was in trauma.

The doctor also claimed that senior doctors are putting pressure on the university and hospital management to take up the matter with the police.

However, a medical examination and DNA testing are yet to be carried out.

Multan Cantonment SP Tahir Majeed told media that the police is trying to get a medical examination and DNA test to proceed with the case.

Notably, Nishtar Medical University Multan has been in the spotlight for the last few months because of the violation of medical protocols at the dialysis unit, causing more than 30 patients to contract Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections during dialysis treatment at the medical centre on October 26.

The incident surfaced when a patient breathed his last of HIV/AIDs complications and was identified as Shahnawaz (40). He was under treatment at the nephrology department of the hospital, where the doctors contacted the institute’s top management to refer him to the isolation ward for immediate care soon after he tested positive for HIV/AIDs after the completion of a dialysis session.

Following the incident, panic spread among the doctors, nurses and other employees of the nephrology department when news broke out that HIV/AIDS infections were transmitted to 30 other patients.

Investigation revealed that the police identified 30-35 people, including the Nishtar Hospital staff, who were behind the alleged tampering of the record of the kidney patients tested positive for HIV/AIDS.

However, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) expressed support for the medics, including the Nishtar Medical University (NMU) Vice Chancellor, who was suspended for negligence that resulted in infections of dozens of kidney patients with HIV in the hospital based on the findings of the probe committee made by the Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz.

Aftab Iqbal returns home after reported ‘missing’

Hours after reportedly going “missing” from Dubai airport, satirical comedy show host Aftab Iqbal has safely returned home.

“We went through a tough time, but Alhamdulillah, Aftab Iqbal has safely returned home. Thank you to everyone who prayed for us,” read a tweet posted on Aftab Iqbal’s official handle on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

Aftab Iqbal’s counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq, clarified in a post on his X handle on Tuesday that no case had been registered against his client in Pakistan, adding, “Aftab Iqbal’s name has not been included in the no-fly list due to judicial intervention. Despite this, he was stopped at Dubai airport last night and had left for home safely some time ago.”

Ashfaq further stated that Aftab Iqbal himself would narrate the story in a few hours.

Earlier, it was reported that a renowned host was “missing” after his detention at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Airport in Dubai.

According to Aftab’s daughter, Ayesha Noor Iqbal, her father was arrested after landing at Dubai airport.
“He returned from the UK with my mother, and the immigration authorities took him away. Later, they said he has a clean chit from the UAE government, but they gave no further details of where and how he is,” she said.

The host’s brother, Junaid Iqbal, confirmed the development in a post on his X account.

He stated that Aftab Iqbal was detained from Manchester upon arrival in Dubai without any explanation. “He [Aftab Iqbal] was stopped and detained there without assigning any reason. We have not yet got wind of him ever since,” he added.

He urged authorities to intervene and ensure Iqbal’s safe exit from the airport.

It may be recalled that days after the TV host’s detention at the Dubai airport, he accused the former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa of blocking his comedy show from going on air in 2022.

Iqbal claimed that he had made a parody song with visuals related to the then COAS, which offended him. However, he clarified that had he not made the parody, his show would never have gone off the air.

“PEMRA is the instrument of a fascist imported govt which can’t tolerate any justifiable criticisms. My Programme, which is recognised as satire, has been forced off the air. Is this democracy worse than Mussolini’s fascist Italy? I intend to contest these illegal actions on every forum [sic],” the journalist had said in a post on his X account in 2022.

Aftab has worked on many prominent news channels, including Geo News, Express News, Dunya News, and Samaa.
