After EU, UK and US express concerns over May 9 civilians’ military trials

After twenty-five civilians were sentenced to prison by military courts on December 21 for their involvement in attacks on military installations during the May 9 riots, the United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) have also raised concerns about the lack of transparency.

A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: “While the UK respects Pakistan’s sovereignty over its legal proceedings, trying civilians in military courts lacks transparency and independent scrutiny and undermines the right to a fair trial.”

“We call on the government of Pakistan to uphold its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR),” concluded the FCDO spokesperson on December 23.

Similarly, the US States Department issued a press statement which read: “The United States is deeply concerned that a military tribunal has sentenced Pakistani civilians for their involvement in protests on May 9, 2023. These military courts lack judicial independence, transparency, and due process guarantees.”

“The United States continues to call on Pakistani authorities to respect the right to a fair trial and due process, as enshrined in Pakistan’s constitution,” stated the press release by the US State Department.

Earlier, the European Union (EU) also raised serious concerns over the military trials of civilians, stating that the verdicts were seen as “inconsistent with the obligations that Pakistan has undertaken under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).”

An EU spokesperson pointed out that under the EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), beneficiary countries, including Pakistan, have voluntarily agreed to implement conventions that include the ICCPR in order to continue benefitting from GSP+ status.

GSP+ allows developing countries, including Pakistan, to export goods to the EU market at zero duties for 66 per cent of tariff lines. This preferential status is conditional on GSP Plus countries demonstrating tangible progress on the implementation of 27 international conventions on human and labour rights, environmental protection, climate change and good governance. Pakistan now exports approximately EUR 5.4 billion worth of goods, namely garments, bedlinen, terry towels, hosiery, leather, sports and surgical goods, to the European Union.

Pakistan’s military media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced the verdicts of civilians’ military trials over the May 9 riots a few days after the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench conditionally allowed military courts to announce their verdicts.

Ten-year sentences were handed down to 14 of the 25 persons convicted, with one each given nine-year, seven-year, and three-year terms; six years to two; four years to another two; and two years to four people.

  • Fakhar Zaman breaks silence on Babar Azam tweet

Fakhar Zaman breaks silence on Babar Azam tweet

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has finally broken his silence on tweeting in support of Babar Azam in October, explaining why he did so.

He appeared on PAKTV.TV on YouTube on Monday with sports Journalist Sanaullah, where he openly talked about tweeting in favour of Babar Azam and gave his reasons for doing so. The host asked him, “If you had tweeted, did it occur to you that there could have been a better way and that you should not have tweeted?”

“I completely thought that it would have been better if I had not tweeted,” Fakhar replied. “People also thought that I had criticized the Board’s (Pakistan Cricket Board) decision, but this was 100 per cent wrong. I had tweeted before the team was announced. Some of our journalists and former cricketers were saying that Babar should be dropped. It was coming to my mind that people do not see that Babar Azam has done so much for the country and are saying that he should be dropped.”

Fakhar said that he tweeted before the team was announced. “Think for yourself, I am also a cricketer, in a way, an employee of the PCB. I will tell all the players that you can never be above the Board, nor can you criticize any decision of the Board as long as you are playing. I did not tweet because Babar would sympathize with me, I always talk to him on and off,” he added.

He also said, “The young batter Khawaja Naffay is a good boy; he has a spark. You must have seen that Saim Ayub came in the beginning, and he also struggled a lot. The first thing I said about him was that if he takes care of himself, he can become an updated version of Babar Azam. Similarly, this boy Naffay also has a lot of spark, if he is groomed for big cricket, he can play for Pakistan for a long time.”

Fakhar had expressed his support for Babar Azam on X (formerly Twitter) on October 13, 2024, following Babar’s exclusion from Pakistan’s Test squad for the remaining matches against England. In his post, Fakhar highlighted that during Virat Kohli’s challenging period between 2020 and 2023, India did not drop him, suggesting that sidelining Babar could negatively impact the team.

  • Cricket integrity sacrificed for India in the Champions Trophy: The Telegraph

Cricket integrity sacrificed for India in the Champions Trophy: The Telegraph

Tim Wigmore of the British newspaper The Telegraph has taken a dig at India, saying the reputation of the game has been sacrificed to benefit the country in the Champions Trophy, while stressing that India is using its power to prevent Pakistan from hosting the final.

Wigmore, the Deputy Cricket Correspondent, termed the entire saga a “complete disgrace”. The two venues of the Champions Trophy are Pakistan and the UAE. The final is scheduled in Lahore, but if India reaches it, it will be played in the UAE.

Wigmore did not mince his words when dissecting that one country has so much power that it can prevent another country from hosting the final. The venue of the final will not be known until March 4, i.e. five days in advance, there is no example of this anywhere.

Lahore is preparing again after hosting the 1996 World Cup final, the fans and organizers do not know whether the final will be held there or not.

Pakistan was awarded the 2025 Champions Trophy with 15 matches, but India was not given the option to play the matches in another country, Tim said.

Wigmore pointed out that the seven countries in the event do not know where they will play the knockout matches; only India knows where they will play in the semi-finals and finals.

ICC events continue to sacrifice the reputation of the game for Indian interests. In the 2019 World Cup, India did not play a match for eight days after the start of the tournament, while South Africa was playing the third match, Tim wrote.

A gap of 15 days has been added from the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the international match. In the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups, India’s final group matches were kept at the end to see the run rate.

India’s final matches in the T20 and ODI World Cups were played against weaker opponents. This year, India’s semi-final was held in Guyana without considering the group position in the T20 World Cup, Tim said.

In the Champions Trophy, India will have to form a squad according to the conditions of one country, while the other seven teams will have to look at the conditions of two countries for their squads.

$5bn corruption case initiated against Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh has launched a probe into the alleged $5 billion embezzlement connected to a Russian-backed nuclear power plant by ousted leader Sheikh Hasina and her family, the anti-corruption commission said Monday.

Along with Hasina, the now-former prime minster who fled to India after being toppled by a revolution in August, those subject to the inquiry include her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and niece, Tulip Siddiq, a British lawmaker and government minister.

The allegations were raised by a writ seeking an investigation filed in the high court by Hasina’s political opponent, Bobby Hajjaj, chairman of the Nationalist Democratic Movement party.

“We seek justice through our court”, Hajjaj told AFP on Monday.

Key allegations are connected to the funding of the $12.65 billion Rooppur nuclear plant, the South Asian country’s first, which is bankrolled by Moscow with a 90 percent loan.

A statement Monday from the commission said it had launched an inquiry into allegations that Hasina and family members had “embezzled $5 billion” from the Rooppur plant via “various offshore bank accounts in Malaysia”.

It said its investigations were examining “questionable procurement practices related to the overpriced construction” of the plant.

“The claims of kickbacks, mismanagement, money laundering, and potential abuse of power raise significant concerns about the integrity of the project and the use of public funds”, the commission said.

Graft allegations also include theft from a government building scheme for the homeless.

Hasina, 77, fled by helicopter on August 5 into exile in India, infuriating many Bangladeshis determined that she face trial for alleged “mass murder”.

It was not possible to contact Hasina for comment.

Siddiq has “denied any involvement in the claims” accusing her of involvement in embezzlement, according to a statement from the British prime minister’s office.

Joy, who is understood to be based in the United States, was also unavailable for comment.

  • Journalist Aftab Iqbal ‘goes missing’ after detention at Dubai airport

Journalist Aftab Iqbal ‘goes missing’ after detention at Dubai airport

Senior journalist and late night host Aftab Iqbal has gone missing after detention by airport authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), his daughter said Monday.

According to Ayesha Noor Iqbal, the journalist was arrested from an airport in Dubai upon his return from the United Kingdom (UK).

“He returned from the UK with my mother and the immigration authorities took him away. Later, they said he has a clean chit from the UAE govt but they gave no further details of where and how he is,” she said.

Earlier, Iqbal’s brother Junaid Iqbal also claimed that his eldest brother was “nowhere to be seen” since after his detention at the airport.

While there has been no official statement on his arrest, the journalist had earlier this month made headlines for hurling accusations at former Pakistani army chief Gen (r) Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Talking about his hit satirical show that was taken off air by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) in 2022, Iqbal had claimed that he made a parody song with visuals related to the then chief of army staff (COAS), which offended him.

He said had he not made the parody, his show would never have gone off the air.

“PEMRA is the instrument of a fascist imported govt which can’t tolerate any justifiable criticisms. My Programme, which is recognised as satire, has been forced off the air. Is this democracy worse than Mussolini’s fascist Italy? I intend to contest these illegal actions on every forum [sic],” the journalist had said in a statement in 2022.

Following the announcement, several journalists, politicians, and activists had called on the government to review the action, citing freedom of expression concerns.

  • Sami Khan reveals shocking fight between two actresses on set

Sami Khan reveals shocking fight between two actresses on set

Actor Sami Khan has revealed shocking details of a fight between two famous actresses during the shooting of a drama set in Kashmir.

The incident, which involved two lead actresses, became so intense that one actress even threw a shoe at the other.

Appearing as a guest on After Hours with Ushna Shah, the Wrong No 2 actor opened up about the incident.

“I was sitting and talking on the phone when suddenly one actress came and sat right in front of me. Her behavior was a bit unusual, but I stayed calm and continued with my phone conversation,” Sami Khan explained.

The Aik Chubhan Si actor continued: “I went to the makeup room while talking on the phone. Suddenly, the door opened, and another actress came in. A heated argument broke out between them, and in the middle of it, one actress threw a shoe at the other. I was talking to someone very important at the time, so I quickly stepped out, ended the call, and returned to find out what had happened.”

Sami Khan further clarified, “I was told the fight escalated when one of the actresses slapped the other. Although both actresses were playing lead roles and were almost the same age, violence is never justified, no matter the situation.”

He emphasized that physical violence is never okay, no matter the situation.

“One of the actresses was the main lead, while the other was in a supporting role. But regardless of the roles, violence is never acceptable. I was supposed to witness a scene where the two were to embrace, but instead, a slap occurred. The justification for the slap didn’t make sense. If something went wrong, it should have been addressed with the director or producer, not through physical violence,” Sami Khan added.

Despite the chaos, Sami praised the professionalism of the actress who was mistreated. “After the incident, the actress who was treated wrong continued working without letting it affect her performance. She completed her last shot for the day, showing incredible professionalism,” he said.

Fans have speculated that the drama in question may have involved well-known actresses Alizeh Shah and Minsa Malik. However, the names of the actresses and the drama have not been officially confirmed by Sami Khan or the production team.

Earlier, actor Sami Khan appeared as guest on Mazaq Raat hosted by Imran Ashraf, where he talked about his craziest fan moment.

The cohost, Ayesha Shakoor, asked, “I’m sure you receive lines from fans because of how handsome you are. What was the craziest fan encounter you’ve ever had in your life?”

“It was a very crazy experience in Lahore. Everyone remembers that day in 2012 or 2013,” Khan remembered, recalling that it rained heavily, “so much that people said it looked like it was snowing.”

  • PTI-Government talks: A path to economic stability and business growth

PTI-Government talks: A path to economic stability and business growth

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and the government have agreed to settle their rising tensions via negotiations instead of protests. This is great news for the economy, as the’ long marches’ cost the economy an estimated 190 billion rupees per day at the peak of political clashes.

If negotiations prove to be successful, businesses will benefit enormously from the resulting stable political landscape. This is because businesses will not fear constant road closures and blockades which strangle supply chains across the country.

This will be great news for businesses that rely heavily on the transportation of their goods from warehouses to in-store locations. This also includes businesses in the petroleum industry, as, during the height of the protests, motorways remained closed, leaving petroleum tankers stranded.

The greatest gain will arguably be for investors – both local and foreign. The mere mention of the peace talks has resulted in KSE-100, which is the benchmark index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), to skyrocket by 4,200 points in intraday trading. This comes at a good time, as PSX recently recorded its largest fall in terms of points in the history of the exchange.

If the negotiations bear fruit, foreign investment is expected to rise. This is because foreign investors are not particularly comfortable investing in a country plagued by political uncertainty and violence. The beneficiaries will be local businessmen again, as they will be able to utilise foreign investment to expand the scope of their operations and rely on their international backers to capture a higher market share.

The greatest channel for business growth will most probably be the rise in domestic demand once political stability restores economic stability. Domestic demand will surge once citizens believe the economy is stable and that their livelihoods are not at stake.

As it stands, experts are claiming that protests resulted in lots of damage to local businesses either due to vandalism or, more commonly, because of road closures. When consumers are uncertain about their employment outcomes in the future, they tend to save funds to smooth consumption patterns once they lose their source of income.

Aside from domestic consumption rising due to certainty about employment, demand for local goods and services is also expected to increase due to lower interest rates. Interest rates were slashed last week and have settled at a two-year low of just 13 per cent, allowing consumers to purchase goods at a comparatively lower price tag as borrowing is cheaper now.

Political and employment certainty, along with interest rate cuts, are expected to allow businesses to reap the benefits of higher sales volumes, which might translate into higher profit margins.

Hospitality, tourism and travel companies will be the primary beneficiaries as they will not be forced to close down operations due to constant rallies and protests. This will be a welcome change for business owners in these sectors, as the protests have left many small companies teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.

Talking about the drama serial Gentlemen, Aalam praised its high production.

“The work was good, the story is solid, the people are great, and the production is top-notch, but, for some reason, it hasn’t fully clicked yet. Maybe it will once the proper love story starts because, in dramas, it usually picks up after around the eighth or ninth episode. It’s rare for a drama to take off right from the first episode”, he added.
