Karachi cop shoots robber dead despite surrender

A police officer in Karachi has shot dead a robber despite the latter surrendering to him, a viral CCTV video has revealed.

As per the details, the video being shared over the internet showed an encounter between two cops and a street criminal in the Parda Park are of the port city.

According to Geo News, the video was recorded Tuesday when two police officers chased a robber on a motorcycle. As they inched closer to nabbing him, the robber threw his pistol away and got off the bike. He then raised both his hands, surrendering to the cops.

The video then showed the cops parking their motorcycle as at least one of them opens fire at the robber.

The video also showed a large number of people gathering at the site of the incident after hearing the gunshots.

Police, in an official statement, said that multiple robbery cases were registered against the deceased, namely Munir, at various police stations across the city. However, they said, an investigation was being conducted into the firing incident that led to Munir’s death.

Notably, a report released by the City Police Liaison Committee indicated that in the first six months of 2024 alone, 10,304 mobile phones were stolen, and 135 vehicles were snatched at gunpoint.

Moreover, 4,639 motorcycles were stolen during the same period.

Incidents of police harassment and brutality are increasingly becoming common as previously in September, Dr Shahnawaz Kunbhar from Umerkot in Sindh was fatally shot by police in an alleged extra-judicial killing in Mirpurkhas, a day after he was arrested on allegations of blasphemy.

The body was handed over to the family but an angry extremist mob followed them and eventually burnt the body.

In the days that followed the investigation revealed that the slain doctor was killed in a fake encounter, and 45 suspects were made part of the FIR as the news was highlighted by civil society and media groups, putting pressure on the government to solve the case.

The suspects nominated in the FIR include top police officials and a cleric.

It was suggested in the inquiry report presented by Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar that the family must register an FIR against the suspects.

  • Lawyer wants contempt of court for not writing ‘Honourable’ before Chief Justice’s name

Lawyer wants contempt of court for not writing ‘Honourable’ before Chief Justice’s name

Advocate Afaq Ahmed has filed a contempt of court application in Lahore High Court on the matter of not righting “Honourable” before the Chief Justice in a notification pertaining to the appointment of new judges.

Lahore High Court’s Justice Farooq Haider chaired the proceedings of the office objection on the petition of Afaq Ahmed Advocate.

The petition was filed against Secretary of Judicial Commission Niaz Muhammad Khan. The petitioner in the case stated that writing “Honourable” before the name of the Chief Justice is a legal requirement. However, it was skipped in the notification for the appointment of new judges, making it disrespectful.

Thus, the petition requested the contempt of court proceedings to be initiated against the Secretary Judicial Commission for issuing an ambiguous notification.

While hearing the case, the court directed the Advocate General Punjab to provide judicial assistance on the matter of not writing ‘Honorable’ before the name of the Chief Justice in the notification for the appointment of new judges.

The Advocate General will be assisting in the light of the decision of the higher judiciary.

Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court’s Registrar’s Office objected to the application and emphasised that the notification was issued correctly and the application was inadmissible.

  • Tan Man Neel o Neel sheds light on taboo topic: Sexual assault on men

Tan Man Neel o Neel sheds light on taboo topic: Sexual assault on men

Produced by Sultana Siddiqui, Tan Man Neel O Neel is the third installment in Hum TV’s mini-drama series.

In her own words, she has produced these three series because she wanted to address and highlight social issues with mob-mentality being the most important.

Tan Man Neel O Neel is turning out to be a refreshing addition to prime-time Pakistani dramas that are on air these days.

Episode 2 hit the right cord with its messaging and entertainment, balancing light-hearted and intense plot lines beautifully, making it highly watchable.

The latest episode delivers powerful messages and a compelling storytelling relatable to all generations, especially Gen-Z.

Moon- played by young actor Ali Ammar- put up a harrowing performance in a scene depicting him enduring sexual assault. The portrayal of a male victim of sexual assault, a topic rarely addressed, is handled with care by the director and actors. Moon’s struggle with anger, shame, and helplessness is heart-wrenching, particularly in the scene where he smashes a brick over his foot, aligning the reaction which most studies point out that the male victims of assault tend to be aggressive, post the incident. The moment was powerful, showing the physical manifestation of his inner turmoil. His relationship with Sonu, who stands by him despite not fully understanding his pain, highlights the importance of friendship and support which could help a survivor heal.

However, the most apt part was the whole execution of the scene where it clearly shows that assault is many times an outcome of the abuser making use of power to crush a victim, not always because of sexual attraction. Writer Mustafa Afridi, like all times, aced it fully in the writing which was just amplified by the people on set.

Rabi, played by Sehar Khan, sets an example for young girls with her smart decision to send a pin location and a picture of her driver to her mother in the guise of sending it to an uncle who is in the police. This act of caution not only depicts the situation of many young girls working and travelling on their own, adding a layer of realism to the character, but also sends a valuable message about staying safe yet independent for young girls.

Our heroine also continues to impress. She balances light-heartedness with thoughtful moments, advising Sonu to support his friend and not let him down. Her belief that confidence is more important than status sends a positive message of inner strength and courage. Rabi’s interactions are filled with wisdom and care, making her a standout character.

The episode also shines a light on other relationships. Rabi’s bond with her mother, played by Nadia Afgan, is honest, supportive, and joyful. This non-toxic, close-knit mother-daughter relationship is a delight to watch. Similarly, Sonu’s relationship with his mother is heartwarming, showing a progressive shift in storytelling where a dancer by profession raised a sensitive and good-natured son like him.

Another highlight is the evolving bond between Rabi and Sonu. Their relationship is developing into something substantial, going beyond the usual “girl meets boy” trope. They recognise and appreciate each other’s inner qualities, which makes their connection more relatable and engaging.

Performances across the board are top-notch. Saleem Mairaj is menacing right from the get-go, Ali Ammar’s portrayal of Moon makes your gut wrench, Sehar Khan brings depth to Rabi while making you smile and Shuja Asad’s Sonu is endearing and sweet as well.
The supporting cast, including Nadia Afgan, Samiya Mumtaz, and others, contribute to the show’s richness.

Director Saife Hasan and writer Mustafa Afridi deserve applause for bringing this unique story to life. They tackle untold stories with a fresh perspective, making Tan Man Neel O Neel a must-watch.

  • As Bitcoin’s value rises, luxury brands consider accepting crypto payments

As Bitcoin’s value rises, luxury brands consider accepting crypto payments

Bitcoin’s soaring value has attracted the attention of luxury fashion brands and retailers, prompting further interest in offering cryptocurrencies as a means of payment to tap into fresh pockets of wealth and build loyalty with crypto investors, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Until recently, only a handful of luxury brands, including LVMH watch labels Hublot and Tag Heuer, as well as Kering-owned fashion brands Gucci and Balenciaga, have experimented with crypto payment offers.

In recent weeks, upscale French luxury department store Printemps announced it was teaming up with the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, and French financial tech company Lyzi to accept cryptocurrencies including bitcoin and ethereum in its stores in France — becoming the first European department store to do so.

The move, coming as bitcoin rises, has been noticed by other brands and retailers who are showing interest in joining in.

“There have been quite a few calls — it’s generated interest,” said David Princay, president of Binance France, who said the company is in talks with other luxury labels.

Luxury lighter and pen maker S.T. Dupont told Reuters that it aims to accept cryptocurrency payments in two Paris stores before the holidays.

In the realm of experiences, cruise company Virgin Voyages began this month offering its first product accepting Bitcoin as a payment option — a $120,000 annual pass for up to a year of sailing on its cruise ships.

Regulators have long warned that cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are high-risk assets, with limited uses in the real world. High volatility has been another barrier to wide adoption as a means of payment.

But pledges of support from US President-elect Donald Trump, who is expected to bring in more friendly e-currency regulation, have fueled record-breaking rises for bitcoin.

S&P analysts say the narrative is starting to shift, noting that blockchain innovation in financial markets could increase predictability for cryptocurrencies.

    Seeking innovative branding

Luxury labels have long sought to cater to affluent shoppers from the tech industry by opening stores in upscale Silicon Valley malls and issuing products like the Hermes Apple Watch, for example, which combines signature, stitched leather straps of the French Birkin bag maker with tech giant Apple’s connected timepiece.

Now, new wealth generated by bitcoin’s recent highs — topping $107,000 on Monday — comes as the luxury industry faces its biggest slump in years and searches for new sources of growth.

Offering cryptocurrency payments can be a way for companies to brand themselves as innovative rather than a stuffy old brand that’s only selling to the boomers, said Andrew ONeill, digital assets lead analyst at S&P Global Ratings.

The payment option remains largely symbolic. Retailers usually reconvert the funds to euros or dollars to offset risks of volatility, while for most shoppers, payment methods are seen overall as something that has been solved already by such transaction platforms as PayPal or Venmo, said O’Neill.

But for bitcoin investors who have seen a strong rise in the value of their investment, luxury goods — a designer handbag or high-end watch — are an obvious choice for diversifying one’s portfolio, analysts say.

In a sign of growing interest from designer labels, Balenciaga recently issued a leather card holder designed to hold Stax hardware from crypto wallet company Ledger.

The black leather accessory, which retails for 350 euros ($368), includes a keychain and Eiffel Tower charm, and an NFC chip fitted underneath the brand logo. Ledgers Stax Crypto hardware, its recently developed higher-end hardware with a curved touch screen, sells for $399 at Best Buy.

The company’s Flex hardware, which resembles a mini Amazon Kindle, sells for $249 while the Nano version, which looks like a USB key, sells for $79.

    Reaching younger clientele

Gregory Boutte, chief client and digital officer for luxury conglomerate Kering, has described the group’s strategy when it comes to technology as test and learn rather than wait and see. He emphasised the embrace of new technologies as key to reaching younger and Asian clientele.

Kering’s star label, Gucci, has since 2022 made purchases available through 10 cryptocurrencies for most of its products in the United States.

Printemps is working to expand its crypto payments service to New York City, where it plans to open a multibrand retailer in the Wall Street district in March.

Bitcoin’s rise in late 2021 prompted an initial flurry of interest from luxury brands with Tag Heuer, headed at the time by LVMH luxury scion Frederic Arnault, as well as Gucci, accepting payments in cryptocurrency the following year for some purchases in the United States.

One crypto advocate who recently used digital assets to make luxury purchases is Eunice Wong, an investor and influencer known as “Eunicorn”.

Wong said she used cryptocurrency to buy several high-end watches this year including an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak model. But she is not interested in being drawn in by high-end brands seeking to build a closer client relationship, preferring to bypass traditional retail stores and sales routines.

That takes too much time, in her view.

“If I will buy, I’ll buy on the secondary market, not through them,” she told Reuters. “I want it now.”

  • Mahira Khan reveals she was almost cast in Netflix’s Heeramandi

Mahira Khan reveals she was almost cast in Netflix’s Heeramandi

Pakistan’s beloved actress Mahira Khan has revealed that Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted to cast her in his hit Netflix series Heeramandi 15 years ago.

In an interview with BBC Asian Network’s Haroon Rashid, Khan shared, “I was a big fan of Bhansali’s work. I recounted that my childhood friend was getting married in Bombay, and Moin Baig, who came up with the concept, was in Pakistan looking for actors.”

Her friend, who was meeting designer Rizwan Baig for wedding clothes, found out they were looking to cast someone and suggested Khan, who was working as a video jockey at the time.

She traveled to India and had a last-minute meeting with Bhansali himself. They met and “spoke lots,” Khan said. “The director was very excited for me to be part of the project, which was supposed to be a movie. However, I could not star in the series due to political tensions between India and Pakistan.”

She said, “I later met Bhansali when I went to work on Raees,” she recalled, referring to her Bollywood debut alongside Shah Rukh Khan.

Earlier this year, Bhansali discussed his casting choices for the show and said, “At one point, it was also Mahira Khan, the Pakistani actor, then Fawad Khan and Imran Abbas. But then it all changed.”

Reflecting on the “crazy ride” she said her audience traveled along for, Khan maintained that she felt more at peace with herself now.

  • I do not have a button to shut down the internet: IT Minister

I do not have a button to shut down the internet: IT Minister

State Minister for Information Technology (IT) and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has addressed the issue of internet shutdowns and the ban on X (formerly Twitter) in the country.

Addressing the floor of the National Assembly on Wednesday, the IT Minister said that shutting down the internet does not benefit the government, adding, “I do not have a button to shut down the internet.”

She further stated that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reports suggest that the internet has improved by 28 per cent in Pakistan since last year, adding that mobile internet users have grown by 24 per cent.

Responding to the ban on X, Khawaja remarked that freedom of expression has nothing to do with the prohibition of X and substantiated her claims by saying, “On the public level, Facebook and TikTok are widely used, while only two per cent of Pakistani citizens use X.”

She said if there really was to be a ban on freedom of expression , then “Facebook and TikTok would have been banned” instead of X.

Khawaja stated, “I don’t think any other country has as much freedom of speech as this country has.” However, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) 2024 reports on the World Press Freedom Index placed Pakistan on the ranks of 152 out of 180 countries.

Additionally, the IT Minister, however, while highlighting the negative side of freedom of expression, said that people often use social media to defame others and treat public officeholders as if they are “public property.”

It merits a mention that after the general election of 2024, X was banned in the country and was only accessible through Virtual Private Network (VPN), which the government had also started to ban due to “security concerns.”

Meanwhile, on December 16, following approvals from the federal cabinet in June this year, the IT Minister tabled the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill, 2024, in the NA session, which aimed to create a digital identity for citizens to centralise social, economic, and governance data.

The bill read that it was expedient to enable the people to become a digital nation by leveraging the transformative power of digital technologies, responsible use of data, innovative service delivery models and robust digital public infrastructure to accelerate sustainable economic development, improve citizen well-being, and modernise governance frameworks for efficient and effective public service delivery.

As per the bill, key governance bodies such as the National Digital Commission (NDC), Strategic Oversight Committee (SOC), and the Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA) will be established.

Here are some reactions on the statement of the IT Minister On X ban in Pakistan:

  • No quitting: Bollywood’s Aamir Khan wants to keep acting

No quitting: Bollywood’s Aamir Khan wants to keep acting

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bollywood superstar and filmmaker Aamir Khan considered quitting cinema for good after dominating the Indian film industry for more than four decades.

“It was in the middle of Covid and I was… thinking of a lot of things, and I suddenly felt that I had spent all of my adult life in this magical world of cinema,” Khan told AFP in London, draped in a heavy purple shawl and sporting a handlebar moustache.

He is not wrong, having helped shape Indian cinematic culture for years, becoming one of Bollywood’s most popular actors.

He has amassed a formidable oeuvre of Hindi-language films, including “Lagaan”, nominated for best foreign language film at the Oscars in 2002, as well as movies such as “3 Idiots”, “Dangal” and “Taare Zameen Par” (Like Stars on Earth).

Starting as a child actor in the 1970s and synonymous with Bollywood ever since, Khan realised he had “not really given the kind of bandwidth to my personal life that I would have liked to”.

“The realisation that I’ve lost all that time was something that I was finding difficult to come to terms with and I was going through a lot of guilt… My knee-jerk reaction to that was that I’ve had enough of film,” Khan said.

However, his family, including two children, eventually convinced him not to retire. “In my head, I quit. And then I didn’t,” said Khan.

Now, turning 60 in March, Khan, who lives in Mumbai, wants to “continue to act and produce for some time”.

He also wants to use his company Aamir Khan Productions “as a platform to encourage new talent… whose sensibility is close to mine. And (who) want to tell stories which affect me.”

    – ‘Jumping genres’ –

One of those stories was “Lost Ladies”, a Hindi-language comedy about two young brides, which he co-produced with his ex-wife Kiran Rao and was recently promoting in London.

It was released this year, becoming India’s entry for the Oscars foreign film category.

Khan and Rao’s partnership on “Lost Ladies” began when Khan spotted its script at a screenwriting competition which he was judging, leading him to suggest that Rao direct the film.

“I like to react organically to material that comes my way. I feel that a film should begin with the writer, the thought,” Khan said.

“I like that the story should emerge from the writer and then, as a producer or as an actor,

I come in at the right time, when I deserve to,” he added.

Many of his films touch on social issues in India, from women’s rights in rural areas and the sports industry, to the toxic culture in higher education and disability rights.

However, Khan has refused to be boxed into just one type of movie or role.

“I’m happy to jump genres and, experiment with different kinds of stories. I like to surprise myself and my audience.”

He is also not afraid to admit slip-ups, and has been vocal about his disappointment with his last performance in “Laal Singh Chaddha”.

The 2022 Indian adaptation of Tom Hanks’s “Forrest Gump” was a rare blip in the otherwise glowing critical reception of Khan’s work.

“I’m not really happy with my last performance, actually,” said Khan, adding that he thought he was too high-pitched in the role.

“I hope this one’s better,” he said of his upcoming film “Sitaare Zameen Par”, which he says is a “thematic” sequel to “Taare Zameen Par”, a drama about special needs education.

Despite winning dozens of Indian film awards as well as India’s third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, Khan still grounds his idea of success in the film itself.

“Filmmaking is very difficult… telling a story through so many art forms which come together to form cinema,” he said.

“So when I look at the film that we’ve made, and then I look at the script that we set out with, (I ask): has the film reached where we thought it would?”

“And if we’ve reached where we wanted to, and we’ve made the film that we set out to, then it’s a big relief.”

Malik Zaman stated that the betrayal was part of a carefully planned strategy.

“The plan was set for Sunday night, but Rajab didn’t show up at home that night. He arrived around 5 AM the next day, and by then, everyone had already left. The next day, they executed their plan. I’m amazed at how quick their response was. After Sunday, they acted fast and caught him,” he added.

Zaman described how the police arrived at Rajab’s home while he was sleeping.

The wildlife department had arrived to check on the cub. The police took Rajab to the police station and found a gun in his room.”

Malik Zaman also clarified that Rajab had the proper license for the rifle he had received as a wedding, saying, “As far as the situation with the gun and the rifle is concerned, Rajab was given a rifle as a gift at a wedding, and it had been licensed in his name. The license was applied for, and it was going to take about 25-30 days to process.”

Malik Zaman made it clear that Rajab Butt followed all legal procedures for the rifle, he also stressed that the arrest was the result of a betrayal by someone close to him. The situation has left many questions unanswered, and it’s unclear how this will affect Rajab’s career and personal life.

Earlier, YouTuber Rajab Butt has been detained for displaying weapons and keeping a lion cub.

According to details, the police, along with the Wildlife Department, raided Rajab’s house, and the Chung police took Rajab Butt into custody.

The police say that Rajab Butt was detained for displaying weapons and keeping a lion cub.

The wedding celebrations of the famous YouTuber Rajab Butt have been going on for the past several days.
