  • French court convicts ex-President, orders him to wear electronic tag

French court convicts ex-President, orders him to wear electronic tag

France’s highest appeals court ordered former president Nicolas Sarkozy to wear an electronic tag for a year Wednesday — a first for a former head of state — after confirming his convictions for corruption and influence peddling.

It also barred him from public office for three years.

The verdict means he could face 12 months under house arrest, depending on what a judge later decides.

Sarkozy, 69, who had been found guilty of illegal attempts to secure favours from a judge, will “evidently” respect the sentence, his lawyer Patrice Spinosi told AFP.

But he will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights within weeks, Spinosi added.

That will not, however, hold up Wednesday’s sanction, Sarkozy having exhausted all the legal avenues in France.

Spinosi said it was a “sad day” when “a former president is required to take action before European judges to have condemned a state over whose destiny he once presided.”

He said his client was “calm and determined”.

But Sarkozy himself said he was “not ready to accept the profound injustice that is being done to me”.

His appeal to the European court in Strasbourg “could, alas, lead to a condemnation of France”, he said. This could have been avoided, he added, “if I had benefitted from a level-headed legal analysis”.

    ‘Corruption pact’

In 2021, a lower court found that Sarkozy and his former lawyer, Thierry Herzog, had formed a “corruption pact” with judge Gilbert Azibert to obtain and share information about an investigating judge, in a case uncovered by wiretapping.

The deal was done in return for the promise of a plum retirement job for the judge.

The trial came after investigators looking into a separate case of alleged illegal campaign financing wiretapped Sarkozy’s two official phone lines, and discovered that he also had a third, unofficial one.

It had been taken out in 2014 under the name “Paul Bismuth”, and only used for him to communicate with Herzog. The contents of these phone calls led to the 2021 corruption verdict.

Before Sarkozy, the only French leader to be convicted in a criminal trial was his predecessor Jacques Chirac, who received a two-year suspended sentence in 2011 for corruption over a fake jobs scandal. But Sarkozy is France’s first post-war president to have been sentenced to serve time.

The court sentenced him to a three-year jail term, two of which were suspended with one to be served in home detention with an electronic tag allowing his movements to be monitored.

That verdict had already been upheld once, by an appeals court, last year.

    Other cases pending

The former president is to be summoned before a judge who will determine the details of his house arrest.

Sarkozy has always insisted he was innocent.

The right-winger was president for one term between 2007 and 2012, failing to win re-election. He has been embroiled in legal troubles ever since leaving office.

The “Bismuth” case comes on top of separate cases about campaign overspending, and the alleged financing by Libya of Sarkozy’s victorious 2007 election campaign.

Financial crimes prosecutors accuse Sarkozy and 12 others of seeking millions of euros from the regime of then Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi.

That case is to go to trial in January.

Despite his legal problems, Sarkozy continues to enjoy considerable influence and popularity on the right of French politics and has the ear of President Emmanuel Macron, with whom he is known to meet on occasion.

Sources have told AFP that Sarkozy held talks at the Elysee earlier this month in a bid to persuade Macron not to appoint veteran centrist Francois Bayrou as prime minister. The former president is widely known to despise him.

After a long hesitation, Macron went ahead and named Bayrou.

  • Virat Kohli loses cool in heated argument with Australian reporter

Virat Kohli loses cool in heated argument with Australian reporter

Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli had a heated exchange with the Australian media upon his arrival in Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test.

According to reports, Kohli confronted media personnel at the airport, believing that they were filming his family without permission. The former Indian captain made it clear that his family’s privacy must be respected, stating, “You just can’t film without asking me,” as per the report.

Channel 7 reporter Theo Doropoulos explained that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding. Kohli reportedly became upset after spotting video cameras, assuming they were pointed toward his children. “It was upon seeing the waiting cameras that Kohli became a little heated over what is largely a misunderstanding when he thought the media was filming him with his children,” Doropoulos said.

The journalist and cameraperson later clarified to Kohli that they were not filming his family members. Kohli then shook hands with the Channel 7 cameraperson and walked away.

  • Alia Bhatt’s Jigra leaves tears in your eyes and questions in your mind

Alia Bhatt’s Jigra leaves tears in your eyes and questions in your mind

Jigra might not have been a big hit at the box office, but it is creating a buzz on Netflix.
I chose to watch it because  Alia Bhatt’s movies are usually interesting, so I decided to give it a try. It was fine, even good, as it showcased the bond between siblings.

However, there are also some negatives because many mysteries were left unsolved, and several things felt missing.

Jigra features Alia Bhatt as Satya, a strong and determined woman on a mission to rescue her brother Ankur, played by Vedang Raina, from a high-security prison. Ankur is accused of drug trafficking in a fictional country called Hanshi Dao, where laws are extremely strict, and the punishment for drug-related crimes is death by electrocution.

The country is undergoing a revolution, but strict laws are still in place. How will Satya manage to achieve the impossible?

Jigra is a must-watch for several reasons. If you’re having trouble deciding what to watch this weekend, give this one a go. The first half of the movie might be a bit slow, which is why it might not have impressed cinematic reviewers, but the second half picks up remarkably well.

The story is set in the fictional land of Hanshi Dao, and filmed in Singapore, a country known for its strict drug laws. The characters speak with a Singaporean accent, making the setting feel authentic. Satya finds allies among the people of Hanshi Dao, but the real challenge is rescuing her brother.

Jigra’s storytelling is both predictable and riveting. We knew Ankur would get into deep trouble, but his ordeal was anything but predictable. Satya’s determination to rescue her brother, without relying on any typical Indian movie tropes, makes the film stand out.

The film includes powerful moments like the classic Bollywood song ‘Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka’ played during an action scene, adding an emotional touch. Alia Bhatt’s physical fitness is impressive, especially in intense fight scenes. The action is well-executed, making Jigra a thrilling ride.

The character of OIC Hansraj Landa, played by Vivek Gomber, adds to the conflict and tension in the story. The film also explores interesting storytelling techniques, often revealing backstory after a scene unfolds.

However, the movie has its share of flaws. The story begins with the suicide of Satya and Ankur’s father, but the film never explains why this happened. This crucial detail is left out, leaving viewers with unanswered questions.

Ankur, who is shown to be naive enough to get trapped in a false drug case, seems inconsistent considering his strong and savvy sister, Satya. It is hard to believe that Satya, portrayed as very capable, would not have taught her brother how to deal with such situations.

Moreover, the film does not reveal who framed Ankur, which leaves a significant plot point unresolved. The absence of this detail detracts from the film’s overall impact.

Another missing element is the response of the local police after Satya kills ex-police inspector Muthu. Given the strict law enforcement depicted in the fictional land of Hanshi Dao, it is surprising that there is no police reaction shown in the film. This oversight weakens the believability of the story.

Despite these shortcomings, Jigra hooks  you till the end. The film’s strength lies in its female lead, delivering a full-on action thriller without a traditional male lead. Alia Bhatt’s performance is a game-changer for Bollywood, proving that female actors can lead action-packed dramas with panache.

The film is your one-stop Netflix action thriller, perfect for thrill-seekers who crave action, drama, and great performances. It’s not entirely bad, though. I would rate it 3 out of 5 stars. It’s worth watching once, especially over the weekend if you haven’t seen it yet.

Jigra first released in cinemas in October 2024. It is directed by Vasan Bala. It has been available for streaming on Netflix since December 6, 2024.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finally resolved the long-standing impasse over the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Under the agreement, India’s matches in the eight-team event will be played at a neutral venue, while in return, ICC events hosted by India will also be played at neutral venues.

According to the press release issued by the ICC, “The ICC Board has today approved that matches between India and Pakistan played at ICC Events during the current rights cycle from 2024 to 2027 (which are to be hosted in India or Pakistan) will be played at a neutral venue proposed by the tournament host. This will apply to the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 (Pakistan), ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 (India) and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 (India and Sri Lanka).”

“In addition, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been awarded hosting rights of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2028, where neutral venue arrangements will also apply. Cricket Australia has also been awarded hosting rights for one of the senior ICC women’s events during the period 2029 to 2031.”

“The match schedule for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 will be confirmed in the coming days.”

Pakistan will host another ICC event after 4 years, in which Pakistan has been awarded the hosting of the 2028 Women’s T20 World Cup.

The 2028 Women’s T20 World Cup will be the first ICC event of the next cycle, and the Pakistan-India fusion formula may also be applied to the Women’s T20 World Cup.

According to the report, in addition to this, until 2027, both teams will play ICC event matches in each other’s country at neutral venues, and the host board will select the neutral venue.

India is hosting the Women’s World Cup 2025 and the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The cricket website report states that the ICC Board will formally approve the agreement between Pakistan and India.

The ICC has also agreed to a proposal for a tri-nation T20 series involving Pakistan, India and any other Asian full-member or associate-member team.

The series will also be held at a neutral venue, a proposal that has been put forward as compensation for Pakistan not being able to host India’s matches in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

  • Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a darvesh: Hans Raj Hans

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a darvesh: Hans Raj Hans

Some artists create a legacy that lasts forever, and Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan stands out as one of them. His music, filled with deep spiritual power, continues to inspire people around the world.

Indian singer and politician Hans Raj Hans recently unveiled a deep admiration for the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Journalist Farid Qureshi asked Hans, “What was your experience with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sahib?”

Hans Raj Hans replied, “Khan Sahib was a unique entity, I consider him a darvesh not just a singer. Such individuals are born very rarely. When the Almighty showers his blessings upon a creation, legends like Nusrat sahib emerge. These people are not born every day, Nusrat sahib was a genius and incredibly humble.”

During the interview, Hans Raj Hans also spoke about his love for Lahore and its spiritual and cultural richness.

“Upon entering Lahore, the first place I visit is Data Sahib, followed by Nanaka Sahib, and then I head to Pakpattan. I believe that no country feels as good as this one when it comes to Tasawwuf (spiritualism) and art. And when it comes to food, there is no comparison. Whether it’s Phajja’s paye (trotters) or the halwa puris from Lakshmi Chowk, it’s unmatched. Though I’m a vegetarian, I was told that having meat brings real joy.” Here he started thinking and someone from the audience interjected, “Cocoo Den” and he continued, “Yes! That and Phajja Sahab made me such amazing vegetarian that I haven’t had that sort till date”, he said.

Hans Raj Hans went on to express his admiration for several legendary musicians from Pakistan, calling them irreplaceable.

“When it comes to music, Pakistan has produced legends like Ustad Niazat, Salamat Ali, Tufail Niazi, Fateh Ali, Amanat Ali, Shaukat Ali, and Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi—the list goes on. You’ve got everything in Pakistan,” he added.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to music, the event organizers honored Hans Raj Hans at the House of Lords in London, England. Lord Rami Ranger hosted the event, organized by Samara Events UK, to celebrate his lasting impact on the music industry.

He has earned the prestigious Padma Shri civilian honor for his achievements. Hans has also released several ‘Punjabi-pop’ albums and collaborated with famous artists, including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the movie Kachche Dhaage.

He has also lent his voice to several Bollywood movies, including Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Mausam, Patiala House, Black & White, Bend It Like Beckham, 23 March 1931: Shaheed, Nayak, Jodi No. 1, Monsoon Wedding, and Bichhoo.

  • Hollywood star wears T-shirt honouring Palestinian grandfather

Hollywood star wears T-shirt honouring Palestinian grandfather

Hollywood star Melissa Barrera recently paid tribute to Hajj AbuDiya Nabhan, who was tragically killed in Israeli fire in Gaza. Barrera honored him by wearing a “Soul of My Soul” T-shirt, which was also the last shirt Nabhan wore.

Barrera’s gesture comes amidst her ongoing support for various causes, including women’s rights. She has been vocal about her stance on social issues and continues to use her platform to raise awareness.

Sheikh Khaled Nabhan, also known as Abu Diaa, was famous for his popular phrase “Soul of my Soul,” which he uttered as he lovingly kissed goodbye his granddaughter Reem, who was killed by an Israeli airstrike.

Khaled was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. He rose to prominence after a video showed him grieving his granddaughter, Reem, who was martyred alongside her brother Tariq, and describing the loss as losing the soul of his soul, i.e., his daughter’s daughter.

Since then, he had been seen helping the elderly, children, and animals of the besieged strip.

After his passing, social media is paying tribute to him, saying that his soul must have reunited with the soul of Reem, his beloved granddaughter.

Earlier, Melissa Barrera opened up about the darkest year of her life after facing a major career setback for taking a stand for Gaza. In a candid interview with The Independent, Barrera shared her journey of self-discovery following her firing from the Scream franchise.

A year ago, Barrera became known as a staunch advocate for Palestine. She actively called out Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his regime’s actions in Gaza.

“Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp,” she wrote in an Instagram story in October 2023. “This is genocide and ethnic cleansing.” In another post, she highlighted the struggle to find news on Palestinian suffering, criticizing Western media for showing a biased perspective.

Spyglass, the studio behind the latest Scream films, immediately dropped Barrera from the franchise. The company stated, “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

Barrera responded by condemning both antisemitism and Islamophobia, stating, “I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism.”

Reflecting on that time, Barrera described it as the darkest and hardest year of her life. For nearly 10 months after getting fired, substantial job offers were scarce, and she felt like her career might be over. “It was quiet for, like, 10 months. I was still getting offers for small things here and there — I’m not going to lie and say there was nothing — but the message was, like, ‘Oh, she probably doesn’t have work, she’ll say yes to anything,’” she explained.

Barrera used this time to reassess her identity beyond acting, realizing she was more than just an actor – she was a great sister, daughter, and friend.

Barrera expressed mixed emotions about her time in the Scream franchise. While she appreciated the career boost and loyal fans, the firing and backlash were tough to handle. Fans often bring up the controversy, making her feel like she failed at something. “They’re like, ‘What they did to you is so messed up, I’m so sorry that happened!’ And it’s something, I think, that’s never going to end. Because the franchise is never going to end,” she said.

Right after Barrera’s dismissal, Neve Campbell agreed to return for the forthcoming Scream VII, dividing the franchise’s fans. Some pledged to boycott subsequent installments out of respect for Barrera, while others remained loyal to Campbell.

Barrera is now finding her footing again in Hollywood. She is currently filming an espionage series for Peacock alongside Simu Liu, which she describes as a revitalizing experience. “It felt like I was invisible, and then all of a sudden, there was a switch that made me visible again,” she shared.

This new project has helped Barrera regain confidence. As she continues to rebuild, she is focused on aligning herself with collaborators who share her values and vision. “I was stuck in the dunes for a while, and now I feel like my feet are moving, I have an oxygen tank, and I’m, like … going up.”

  • Five Pakistanis dead, 35 missing in Greek boat capsizing

Five Pakistanis dead, 35 missing in Greek boat capsizing

The death toll from the boat capsize incident in Greece has surged to 40 as rescue efforts by authorities to find survivors ended without any success on Wednesday.

Officially, Pakistan’s government has confirmed the death of five people belonging to the Sialkot, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, and Narowal districts.

Among the five confirmed victims, two belonged to Pasrur, a tehsil of Sialkot, while one each hailed from Gujrat, Narowal, and Mandi Bahauddin. The fifth victim was identified as Muhammad Shabeer of Gakharkey village of Narowal.

Additionally, locals in Heelan village of Mandi Bahauddin also claimed that five youngsters from their village were also among the missing. The family of another victim named Awais of Uddu Fateh village of Pasrur told the media that he was also missing.
However, as the search by Greek authorities ended on Wednesday, 35 missing citizens are also presumed dead now, taking the tally to 40.

An earlier report suggests that 47 Pakistanis were among the rescued passengers.

    FIA investigation

Following the incident, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered six cases against suspects allegedly involved in illegal transportation of victims from Punjab to Libya with promises to send them off on boats to Greece, helping them enter Europe.

FIA officials have also ‘sealed’ the FIRs to reportedly conceal the identity of local facilitators.

Dawn quotes sources saying that three cases were registered with the Gujrat and Gujranwala circles of the FIA, adding that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the boat accident on Wednesday.

Reports suggest that at least four different teams — two each in Gujrat and Gujranwala — have been constituted to trace and arrest the human traffickers and their local facilitators in the region.

    PM chairs meeting

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday in a meeting directed strict action against human trafficking and sought a quick report on the incidents of human trafficking during the last year involving Pakistani citizens.

“The recurrence of such incidents is due to the sluggish action against the people involved,” the PM said.

In an effort to thwart illegal transportation, the premier instructed the immediate implementation of the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS) to monitor international travellers.

The authorities also informed the PM that 174 people involved in human trafficking had been produced before courts, with four of them convicted only.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister recalled that 262 Pakistani nationals had lost their lives in a similar incident in the same area last year.

However, in a report released by Pakistan’s National Commission for Human Rights, Pakistan it was stated,: “In the year 2023 alone over 6,000 Pakistanis undertook illegal journeys to reach European shores” — though some other estimates put the number significantly higher.

In 2023, more than 350 Pakistanis lost their lives when an overcrowded boat carrying hundreds of illegal migrants sank en route to Greece from Libya.

  • ‘I don’t think Mahira Khan is an experienced actor,’ says Syed Muzammil Shah

‘I don’t think Mahira Khan is an experienced actor,’ says Syed Muzammil Shah

TV host Syed Muzammil Shah recently expressed his personal opinion about beloved actress Mahira Khan, suggesting that she lacks sufficient acting experience.

Shah appeared on Zabardast, a program on New TV, where he discussed a range of topics, including the country’s political landscape, notable showbiz personalities, and his own career. In one of the segments, he shared his views on the beauty and acting skills of both Pakistani and Indian actresses.

In response to a comparison question, Shah ranked Indian actress Madhuri Dixit as the most beautiful, with Mahira Khan coming in second. He placed Alia Bhatt third and Mehwish Hayat fourth in terms of beauty.

Shah also shared his opinions on the acting experience of these actresses, ranking Mahira Khan last (fourth), Mehwish Hayat third, Alia Bhatt second, and Madhuri Dixit first.

He said, “I do not follow Mahira Khan’s work closely but disagree with the general public’s perception of her acting skills.”

“I don’t think Mahira Khan is very experienced in acting,” he added.

He mentioned watching her in The Legend of Maula Jatt and stated, “I did not understand her acting.” He praised Hamza Ali Abbasi’s performance in the same film.

Shah predicted that memes would be created based on his comments about Mahira Khan. His remarks sparked criticism on social media, with users questioning his expertise in evaluating acting talent.

  • Islamabad’s noose tightens around tax evaders but could strangle economy instead

Islamabad’s noose tightens around tax evaders but could strangle economy instead

Islamabad is continuing its crusade against tax evaders as a new bill was proposed to enforce tax compliance. Dawn News reported that tax authorities will be given sweeping powers to ensure that all tax laws are being followed.

The new bill will grant authorities the right to shut down non-complying businesses on the spot and seize assets at their own discretion. Moreover, non-filers will no longer be able to partake in a plethora of economic activities such as real estate transactions, trading securities, or even purchasing automobiles.

If enforced properly, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) could report a substantial surge in tax collection levels. This is because, in FY 2023-24, tax evaders were able to withhold a staggering $13.8 billion, which the FBR has set its eyes on now.

While the ‘war’ on evaders will boost tax collections and be lauded as a political victory for Islamabad, genuine business activities could get caught in the crossfire. For instance, the volume of sales in the automobile sector is expected to decline now as tax evaders will not be able to purchase cars more than 800cc.

Automobile giants such as Honda Atlas Cars and Toyota Indus both manufacture cars solely above 800cc and are expected to see a decline in sales volume and, ultimately, market share if the proposed bill is passed. Experts are speculating a possible drop in the value of both Honda and Toyota (traded on the stock exchange under the name ‘Indus Motor Company’). However, local car dealerships specialising in the sale of imported 660cc cars may benefit as they might witness a greater number of customers.

The real estate market is another agent in the economy that will suffer tremendously due to the crackdown on non-filer realty transactions. It is an open secret that the real estate market practically runs on black money, and as per Imlaak, the true amount could be in the trillions of rupees.

Tax evaders have exploited the gap between FBR and market valuations of land by paying the FBR value to the seller via official channels and paying the rest of the market value to the seller under the table. This land is then sold later officially at market value which allows them to launder their money.

The bill, however, proposes that non-filers shall not be able to buy property at all, resulting in a slowdown of the real estate market. This will likely hurt those individuals who have invested their life savings into real estate, as reduced demand for land will result in a fall in property prices.

Another cause for concern for businesses is the unchecked power that tax officials will obtain. The bill will allow tax officials to usurp business assets as they see fit if the business is evading taxes. Business owners are uneasy about these developments and are considering hiring auditors to ensure they are indeed complying with tax laws, which obviously comes at a cost to the business.

With the majority of economic agents viewing the bill in a negative light, it will be interesting to see if Islamabad will soften its stance against tax evaders. Only time will tell.

  • Dialogue with PTI will be subject to Nawaz Sharif’s approval, says Rana Sanaullah

Dialogue with PTI will be subject to Nawaz Sharif’s approval, says Rana Sanaullah

Advisor to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has clarified on Wednesday that whenever the government initiates negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), they will be subject to the approval of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif.

“Government will take establishment on board in negotiations during its talks with PTI. Likewise, whatever PTI decides [in talks with the government] will be subject to the approval of Imran Khan,” Sanaullah said in Geo News’ Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath.

Commenting on former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent call to launch a civil disobedience movement if two of his demands are not met, the advisor to the PM observed, “They [PTI] will not achieve anything from the civil disobedience movement, and it will fail just like the November 24 protest.”

“Overseas Pakistanis do not send rupees to the government; they send it to their loved ones,” Sanaullah pointed out. He asked why PTI is expecting that overseas Pakistanis would compromise their children’s education by not sending remittances to Pakistan.  Sanaullah then stated that PTI can fulfil its desire if it is in a hurry to launch a civil disobedience movement.

On November 6, Imran Khan announced the launch of a civil disobedience movement; however, following the request of his party leaders, Khan deferred the call for a “few days.”

Previously, Jailed Imran Khan had formed the committee comprising Opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Ali Amin Gandapur, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza, lawyer Salman Akram Raja and former speaker NA Asad Qaiser. This committee has been tasked with holding dialogue with the incumbent government to fulfil their two demands, including the release of “political prisoners” facing trial and the constitution of a judicial commission to probe the events of May 9, 2023, and a late-night crackdown on the PTI protesters on November 26.

On being asked about whether the government had offered the former ruling party to release Imran Khan in two weeks if the November 24 protest march was restricted to Sangjani, Sanaullah dismissed the claims by saying that apart from the release of Khan, the government indeed had offered to initiate dialogue with PTI.

Additionally, Sanaullah stressed the need for dialogue between the opposition and the government, saying that “political issues must be resolved only through dialogue.”
