UnitedHealthcare CEO fatally shot outside New York hotel

A masked gunman shot dead a top US health insurance executive outside a New York hotel Wednesday in an apparently targeted hit, before fleeing on a bicycle and triggering a citywide manhunt.

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down as he prepared to address investors with the gunman firing several times before using a rented bike to flee in the direction of Central Park, police said.

Police released security camera images showing the killer brandishing a handgun and wearing a hooded top. Detectives offered a $10,000 reward for the man’s capture.

Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the shooter arrived on foot about five minutes before Thompson as pedestrians streamed past an access door to the Hilton.

Kenny said he approached Thompson from behind and opened fire, cleared a jam in the firearm, and fired again.

“The motive for this murder currently is unknown, but based on the evidence we have so far, it does appear that the victim was specifically targeted. But at this point, we do not know why,” Kenny told a press conference.

UnitedHealthcare is a major player in the multi-trillion-dollar US health care market, providing workplace insurance, as well as administering huge health care programs like Medicare and Medicaid for older and low-income people funded by state budgets.

Thompson, 50, was shot just before 7:00 am at the hotel in the Midtown district of Manhattan, with the CNBC broadcaster suggesting a silencer had been used.

Kenny would not confirm the report of a silencer being used, saying that the question would be part of the investigation but did confirm that a cell phone had been recovered from the scene.

He said that Thompson apparently had no security detail.

Video footage showed officers performing CPR on Thompson before he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The detective had no comment when asked at the press conference whether the killing could have been carried out by someone who had been denied insurance coverage for a medical condition — a common problem in the United States.

Minnesota-based Thompson’s wife Paulette Thompson told the NBC News outlet that he had received unspecified threats.

“There had been some threats basically I don’t know — (over) a lack of coverage? I don’t know details,” said Paulette Thompson who had two children with her late husband.

In a statement, UnitedHealth Group — the parent company of UHC — said it was “deeply saddened and shocked.”

Officers said the lighting of the Christmas tree at the nearby Rockefeller Center, a major annual event that draws vast crowds of tourists and locals, would proceed normally amid tightened security.

    Central New York

UnitedHealth Group had revenues of $100.8 billion in the third quarter of the year.

UnitedHealthcare’s Employer and Individual products are used by almost 30 million people in the United States according to an investor presentation.

Thompson’s own compensation package in 2023 was $10.2 million according to a regulatory filing.

He had been chief executive of UnitedHealthcare since April 2021, according to a separate Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Before that, he oversaw UnitedHealthcare’s government programs including Medicare from July 2019 to April 2021.

The company was due to hold an investor day in New York on Wednesday at which Thompson was scheduled to deliver a keynote speech.

The event was canceled, CNBC reported, and the company did not respond to an AFP request for comment.

The New York Hilton Midtown is one of the city’s biggest hotels, popular with tourists and business travelers, and describes itself as Manhattan’s largest self-contained function space.

It was not answering calls in the wake of the incident.

Outside the hotel, senior police commanders briefed officers as plainclothes detectives passed by upturned paper cups placed on the ground to mark evidence.

The suspect was described as a white man wearing a hooded jacket, black face mask, black and white sneakers, and carrying a grey backpack.

  • ICC meeting on Champions Trophy fate postponed, again

ICC meeting on Champions Trophy fate postponed, again

India has once again refused to accept the formula proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) regarding Champions Trophy deadlock, leading to further postponement of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) board meeting scheduled for Thursday.

As per the details, the meeting scheduled for the day in Dubai will now be held on December 7 — only after India responds to Pakistan’s position, and all stakeholders are confident of a solution that could be accepted by both countries.

The PCB has made it clear to the ICC that the meeting should only be called once India has responded, and a decision can be made, reports said.

Earlier, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Dubai to attend the meeting scheduled for the evening on Dec 5. A major decision on the Champions Trophy was likely to be made during the same.

Meanwhile, an Indian cricketing website claimed that the Champions Trophy will be held under the hybrid model and “Pakistan has accepted it”.

However, PCB has officially only offered a two-nation formula instead of the hybrid model. Under said arrangement, Pakistan shall also not play any ICC tournaments on Indian soil for at least the next three years.

Among other conditions put forth by Pakistan, a 3-nation series with India should also be played at a neutral venue.

While reports say that India is not likely to accept any demands but a majority of the board members “will agree to hold Champions Trophy under two-nation formula”, PCB has rubbished all claims and reiterated its stance.

  • Natural disasters cause $310 billion in economic losses in 2024

Natural disasters cause $310 billion in economic losses in 2024

Natural disasters have caused an estimated $310 billion in economic losses around the world this year, swelling six percent from 2023 as the climate crisis takes its toll, reinsurance giant Swiss Re said Thursday.

Insured losses, meanwhile, swelled by 17 percent year-on-year to $135 billion, with the devastating hurricanes Helene and Milton pushing up the costs, Swiss Re said in a statement.

It marks the fifth consecutive year that insured losses have topped $100 billion, the Swiss company said.

“Much of this increasing loss burden results from value concentration in urban areas, economic growth, and increasing rebuilding costs,” Balz Grollimund, Swiss Re’s head of catastrophe and perils, said in a statement.

Swiss Re, which serves as an insurer of insurance companies, emphasised the impact of climate change, with this year set to be declared the hottest year on record.

“By favouring the conditions leading to many of this year’s catastrophes, climate change is also playing an increasing role,” Grollimund said.

The company highlighted in particular the swelling insurance cost of floods, with intense flooding in Europe and the United Arab Emirates alone seeing insurers dish out $13 billion.

2024 was thus the third-costliest year for floods globally and the second costliest for Europe, it said.

The United States meanwhile saw the highest insured losses.

Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which struck the southeast United States in quick succession in late September and early October, alone resulted in estimated insured losses approaching $50 billion, Swiss Re said.

Coupled with a high frequency of severe thunderstorms, this meant the United States accounted for at least two-thirds of 2024’s total global insured losses, its estimates showed.

  • VIDEO: ‘Kohli probably dying to play in Pakistan’

VIDEO: ‘Kohli probably dying to play in Pakistan’

Former Pakistani pacer and cricket legend Shoaib Akhtar has claimed that the Indian cricket team and Virat Kohli were eager to play in Pakistan, but their government was not allowing them to come to the country for Champions Trophy 2025.

Speaking to a digital media outlet, Akhtar said that Indians wanted to come and play in Pakistan more than Pakistanis themselves.

“They are dying to play in Pakistan… Virat Kohli might also be dying to play in Pakistan,” he said, adding that he had worked with the Board of Cricket Control India (BCCI), and knew that Indians in Pakistan would get the opportunity to earn a lot more in terms of TV rights and sponsorships.

To a question by former skipper Mohammad Hafeez regarding India’s hesitation, Akhtar said their government did not want the national team to travel across the border.

The Indian government and the BCCI have decided not to send the Indian cricket team for Champions Trophy 2025 scheduled to be held in Pakistan next year. Amid negotiations led by the International Cricket Council (ICC), Pakistan has also opposed a proposed hybrid model enabling India to play its matches at a neutral venue.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has said that nothing comes before the country’s “honour” and if India cannot play cricket in Pakistan, Greenshirts won’t go play any matches or tournaments across the border either.

Under PCB’s “new formula” for the upcoming tournament, both teams will play ICC event matches at neutral venues for three years.

With both countries at loggerheads, the ICC Board is likely to meet on the issue this evening (Thursday), for which PCB chief Naqvi has also reached Dubai.

According to reports, a major decision regarding the holding of the Champions Trophy is likely to be made in said meeting.

Meanwhile, a reception is being hosted in honour of India’s Jay Shah, who has assumed the post of ICC chief. A meeting with ICC broadcasters is also underway ahead of the board meeting.

The PCB chief maintains that he is sticking to his stance, and if the new formula is rejected, the PCB can take “strict action”. Pakistan is also reportedly considering legal options to resolve the dispute.

Syed Muzammil Shah’s residence comes under attack

Journalist and social critic Syed Muzammil Shah’s residence in Lahore came under attack on Tuesday night when two of his neighbours opened aerial fire while attempting to break into his home.

Muzammil Shah broke the news a day after the attack on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting, “Two armed men from a neighbouring house, who seems to have taken offence over my recent political opinions, entered the premises of my house around 5: 30 PM yesterday in my absence.”

Syed Muzammil Shah’s recent video on his YouTube channel was named “Drop scene of Imran Khan’s Final Call,” in which he criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its aggressive approach towards the federal capital on the “final call” of party founder Imran Khan.

    1733386258-IUUHKG01QH.jpg

Muzammil had also slammed Prime Minister’s (PM) Shehbaz Sharif-led government over their handling of the former ruling party’s protest march, saying, “They [PTI convoy] were supposed to come from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and you [Mohsin Naqvi] shut down all of Punjab.”

Additionally, Shah, in his vlog, said that both parties, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and PTI have a fascist mindset, placing them in the same category: “It is intra-fascist conflict.”

However, Syed Muzammil Shah’s other video was published recently, along with Muneeb Qadir, but by the time the story was edited, the video was privatised.

Despite two First Information Reports (FIRs) being registered, Shah voiced his frustration, saying, “The main culprit, Naveed, is still at large who openly threatened to gun me down.”

“If I or my family are harmed, the authorities ought to take responsibility,” he added.

Shah, a philosophy enthusiast, has 194 videos on his YouTube channel. He started his career as a newscaster after completing a master’s degree in politics from Forman Christian (FC). Currently, he hosts the talk show ‘Statecraft’ on Express News.

Pakistani journalist fraternity and social critics condemned the incident.

  • Rashid Khan hits out at Taliban for banning women from medical education

Rashid Khan hits out at Taliban for banning women from medical education

Afghan cricket team captain Rashid Khan has raised his voice against the Taliban government’s decision to ban women from medical education.

After imposing several restrictions on women in Afghanistan, the Taliban government has now also banned them from pursuing medical education, prompting the Afghan Cricketer to raise his voice against the Draconian decision. Rashid has called the ban “regrettable” and has appealed to the government to reconsider.

He issued a statement on Instagram, speaking out for  Afghan women.

He wrote, “Learning knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim man and woman. I am saddened and disappointed by the news about the closure of education and medical departments in front of the sisters. It’s very painful to see pictures of sisters and mothers on social media and depression. Just as the foundation of a country’s development begins with education, our sisters also have the right to educate and be able to serve their community in every field except the medical sector. I hope that this decision will be reviewed and our sisters will be provided with education according to the principles of the holy religion.”

“Education holds a central place in Islamic teachings, emphasizing the pursuit of knowledge for both men and women. The Quran highlights the importance of learning and acknowledges the equal spiritual worth of both genders. It is with deep sadness and disappointment that I reflect on the recent closures of educational and medical institutions for the sisters and mothers of Afghanistan. This decision has profoundly affected not only their future but also the broader fabric of our society. The pain and sorrow they express through social media serve as a poignant reminder of the struggles they face,” he added.

The Cricketer wrote, “Afghanistan, our beloved homeland, stands at a critical juncture. The country desperately needs professionals in every field, especially in the medical sector. The acute shortage of female doctors and nurses is particularly concerning, as it directly impacts the healthcare and dignity of women. It is essential for our sisters and mothers to have access to care provided by medical professionals who truly understand their needs.”

He further wrote, “I sincerely appeal for the reconsideration of this decision so that Afghan girls may reclaim their right to education and contribute to the nation’s development. Providing education to all is not just a societal responsibility but a moral obligation deeply rooted in our faith and values.”

Afghanistan, where many restrictions have been imposed on women after the Taliban government came to power, has now issued a new order banning women from pursuing health education in the country.
