‘Terrorist groups from Afghanistan pose gravest threat,’ Pakistan tells UNSC

Pakistan has told the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that terrorist groups operating from sanctuaries inside neighbouring Afghanistan remain the gravest threat to its national security, calling on the issue to be addressed as a priority for regional peace.

Speaking at the council’s briefing on Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad underscored that Islamic State-Khorasan, Al-Qaeda, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), the Majeed Brigade and others were among the terrorist entities that continued to operate from Afghan sanctuaries.

Ahmad said more than 60 terrorist camps were functioning as hubs for cross-border infiltration and attacks. “We have credible evidence of collaboration among these groups through joint training, illicit weapons trade, refuge to terrorists and coordinated attacks aimed at civilians, security forces and development projects in Pakistan.”

He said the threat extended to cyberspace where about 70 propaganda accounts traced back to Afghan IP addresses were spreading extremist messaging. “Curbing these networks requires full cooperation from social media platforms,” he stressed.

The envoy said Pakistan and China had jointly requested the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee to list the BLA and Majeed Brigade and expressed hope for swift action on the proposal. He detailed that the outlawed TTP had an estimated 6,000 fighters, as according to him, it was the largest terrorist group on Afghan soil.

He added that Pakistan had thwarted several infiltration bids, seizing sophisticated military-grade weapons left behind by foreign forces during their withdrawal from Afghanistan.

“These efforts come at a heavy price […] just this month, 12 Pakistani soldiers were martyred in a single incident,” he noted.

Drawing attention to Afghanistan’s economic and humanitarian crisis, the ambassador pointed out that the UN’s 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan had received only 27 per cent of its required funding. He further highlighted that Pakistan hosted millions of Afghan refugees for over four decades, often with inadequate international assistance, and called for a fairer sharing of the burden.

Ahmad acknowledged that civil war in Afghanistan had ended for the first time in 40 years; however, the situation remained deeply worrying, stressing that sustained engagement rather than isolation was the only way to achieve peace.

  • Intelligence agency thwarts major terror attack on PAF base: Report

Intelligence agency thwarts major terror attack on PAF base: Report

One of the country’s premium intelligence agencies has thwarted a major terror plan masterminded by a commander of the Afghanistan-based terror group Fitna al-Khawarij, aimed at carrying out a deadly assault on the strategically important Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Masroor Airbase in Karachi, The News reported today (Friday).

As per the report, the plan was led by a high-profile FAK commander who is already wanted in multiple terrorism cases. The plot involved nine highly trained terrorists, including five Afghan nationals.

The terrorists, who had recently infiltrated Pakistan from Afghanistan, planned to infiltrate the airbase through a pre-selected entry point, take control of the facility, destroy aircraft and infrastructure, and hold the base for as long as possible. They aimed to cause maximum damage and engage in a prolonged gun battle until death, the report claims.

The operation was reportedly under the direct supervision of FAK’s top leadership based in Afghanistan and involved nearly thirteen months of planning. The terrorists had taken up accommodation near the airbase and carried out extensive surveillance of the area to prepare for the attack.

The report further claimed that the agency launched a swift, covert, and coordinated operation the moment the assaulters were about to begin the final phase of their plot, arresting the suspects from various locations nationwide, as the intelligence agency had been closely monitoring their movements.

The agency crippled a key FAK terror network involved in several previous attacks, including the November 2024 assault on Chinese engineers at Liberty Textile Mills in Karachi’s SITE area. The same FAK commander captured in the current operation is believed to have masterminded that attack before fleeing to Afghanistan.

Authorities describe him as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) expert, trained in Afghanistan and a former militant alongside the Afghan Taliban during their conflict with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) forces.

Preliminary investigations suggest the involvement of hostile intelligence agencies, allegedly providing funding and equipping terrorist elements in a bid to destabilize Pakistan. Officials also referenced a similar terror plot foiled last October in which FAK and the hostile agencies had conspired to sabotage a major international event in Islamabad.

Despite such threats, Pakistan’s armed forces, intelligence services, and law enforcement agencies remain steadfast in their mission to protect the nation. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to rooting out terrorism in all its forms and safeguarding national security through coordinated, relentless vigilance.

Taliban govt-run corporation takes over luxury Kabul Serena hotel

Kabul (AFP) – Afghanistan’s Taliban government took over management of Kabul’s famed Serena hotel on Saturday, a hotel statement said, a luxury property targeted by Taliban attacks during their insurgency.

The Kabul Serena Hotel was run for nearly 20 years by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development in the Afghan capital and was popular with business travellers and foreign guests.

“Kabul Serena Hotel shall be closing its operations effective February 01, 2025,” a statement from Serena on Friday night said.

Hotel operations are now handled by the Hotel State Owned Corporation (HSOC), the statement added.

“Since opening in 2005, Kabul Serena Hotel has been an integral part of Kabul’s social fabric, an iconic presence in the city, and a symbol of our unwavering commitment to the people of Afghanistan,” the statement said.

Taliban government spokesmen did not immediately respond to requests for comment and AFP journalists were not allowed onto the property on Saturday morning.

On Saturday, the hotel’s website only showed the statement about the handover and Kabul has been removed from the Serena brand’s list of destinations.

The Switzerland-based organisation also did not respond to AFP requests for comment.

The Serena has been the target of multiple deadly attacks by the Taliban before they swept to power in 2021, ousting the foreign-backed government.

In 2014, just weeks before a presidential election, four teenage gunmen with pistols hidden in their socks managed to penetrate several layers of security, killing nine people, including an AFP journalist and members of his family.

In 2008, a suicide bombing left six dead, in an attack blamed on the current Taliban interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani.

In 2021, the United States and Britain warned their citizens to avoid hotels in Afghanistan, singling out the Serena, underlining the shaky security situation in the aftermath of the Taliban takeover.

In the years since their return to power, however, the Taliban authorities have worked to attract tourism to Afghanistan, touting a return to security.

Calls for aid not to be politicised

Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities on Wednesday said humanitarian aid should not be politicised, saying around 30 non-governmental groups had suspended activities in the country since the United States froze virtually all foreign assistance.

The United States is the largest aid donor in dollar terms globally and in Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries, which is reliant on foreign aid in multiple sectors, including emergency food assistance and healthcare.

After taking office on January 20, US President Donald Trump ordered a 90-day pause to reassess the country’s global assistance funding.

“Aid groups or countries should not use humanitarian aid for political gains,” economy ministry spokesman Abdul Rahman Habib told AFP.

“Around 31 local and foreign NGOs funded by USAID (US Agency for International Development) have seen operations supported by America suspended,” he said, adding that operations funded by other donors were ongoing.

I’m chilling’: YouTuber Luke Damant laughs off fake death rumours

Online death rumours often target celebrities. In the past such famous A-listers as Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron have been victims of the online fake death rumours mill.

Imagine being declared dead online, and laughing it off. That’s exactly what Australian YouTuber Luke  Damant did when fake death rumors about him spread across the internet.

The YouTuber, known for his adventurous travel vlogs and love for cheese parathas, recently became the subject of an unfounded rumor saying that he had passed away in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

In his post, Damant jokingly wrote an obituary about his fake death, saying he turned into a cheese paratha while trying to break a Guinness World Record.

“Authorities are still trying to figure out how a man can possibly turn into a cheese paratha, but it is believed that the old saying is true…”

He expressed his disbelief over the rumors, saying he couldn’t believe people thought he was dead.

“I can’t believe I have to make this post. Guys, I’m f**ng chilling! I’ve been saying for years that the media fakes news, and now, hundreds of thousands of people think I’m dead in a single day,” Luke Damant said.

While he joked about the viral fake death news, Damant made it clear that he had nothing to do with the rumors. “As much as I’d love to take credit for this genius marketing, I have to call it off. It’s gotten out of hand.”

The mock obituary humorously detailed how Luke had tragically ‘had his last paratha’  while attempting to break a Guinness World Record for the most cheese parathas eaten in one hour.

“ After a strong start, getting to 14 within the first 30 minutes of the challenge. It was at number 15, where Luke didn’t chew his paratha, swallowed, and after a 30 second struggle, he magically turned into one,” Luke humourously wrote.

Despite the silly rumors, Luke Damant stays positive and keeps traveling, sharing his exciting adventures with his fans.

Ali Amin Gandapur kay baal katnay ka waqt aa chukka hai: Faisal Vawda

Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Ali Amin Gandapur’s recent statement of answering a bullet with a bullet has been met with criticism, including former Senator Faisal Vawda who has said, “Gandapur kay baal katnay ka waqt agya hai.”

Appearing on the ARY News programme OFF THE RECORD, Vawda said, “Courts ko Ali Amin Gandapur kay controversial bayanat par intervene karna chahiye thaa. (Courts should have intervened on his controversial statements.)”

Lambasting the controversial conduct of former judges of Pakistan, he said, “It’s not the job of the judges to regulate vegetable prices and to demolish Nasla Tower.”

“The impression that the division among Supreme Court judges benefitting the PTI is also incorrect,” Vawda added.

In the same show, former Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar maintained that CM KP Ali Amin Gandapur’s statement regarding the direct talk of the KP province with the Afghanistan government was baseless.

Responding to the proposed constitutional amendments regarding the formation of the Federal Constitution Court (FCC), he emphasised the need for reforms in session courts, as the majority of cases are pending in lower courts.

Suicide bombers given numbing injections, reveals arrested terrorist

An apprehended terrorist belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Rooh Ullah, has revealed that suicide bombers are administered injections to numb them two days before planned attacks.

In a video statement, the terrorist revealed details about his and other suicide bombers’ training in a seminary in Afghanistan and how they crossed the border to get inside Pakistan.

He said that he was a student of the seminary Tarteel-ul-Quran in Tortam village in Afghanistan’s Dangam area for one year.

He’d received the training for 10 days under the supervision of men named Molvi Sibghatullah along with Farooq and Zakir.

He stated that the injections were administered to suicide bombers two days before their departure so they could no longer understand what was happening around them.

Rooh Ullah stated that after completion of their training, he, along with four other suicide bombers, travelled to the Afghan border, where a facilitator named Jawad helped them get inside Pakistani territory.

Then, the group’s responsibility was taken over by another man, Sajjad, who separated the suicide bombers and took Rooh Ullah to a mosque.

The terrorist had now been instructed to meet another individual, Suleman, whom he got to meet after travelling for one hour.

Suleman instructed the terrorist to receive a suicide vest from Jameel, who would also guide him about carrying out the attack in a cantonment area.

Pakistan is witnessing the most significant surge in terrorist attacks over the last two years as it blames the Taliban government in Kabul for not taking action against the TTP.
