‘Please go home’: Imran Khan’s detained sisters refuse to leave even after police set them free

Sisters of former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan, and at least two top Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, were briefly detained by the police for holding a sit-in outside Adiala Jail, saying they won’t leave until permitted to see the jailed party founder.

Sources, however, told The Current that Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, as well as PTI’s Aliya Hamza and Sahibzada Hamid Raza, were later set free when the police stopped the prisoner van at a distance from the jail and asked the detainees to go home.

“You’re not being taken to a police station… please go back to your homes,” sources quoted the police as saying, over which, they added, Khan’s sisters and Hamza refused to leave.

“If you have taken us into custody, then take us to the police station,” they reportedly told the police. The cops then dropped the detainees in front of a wedding hall, reports said, adding that after exiting the police van, the women sat on the lawn and refused to leave.

A peaceful sit-in, led by Imran Khan’s sisters, continued at the location by the time this report was filed.

Earlier, a clash broke out between PTI workers and police near Adiala Jail, leading to multiple arrests and a brief standoff.

The confrontation occurred at the Gorakhpur checkpoint, where PTI workers had gathered and chanted slogans after the party leaders were denied permission to meet the jailed party founder.

In response, police resorted to baton charging the protesters, while PTI supporters pelted stones at law enforcement personnel. Several PTI leaders and workers were taken into custody during the altercation.

The situation was defused after Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Omar Ayub intervened and assured police of cooperation.

PTI chief Barrister Gohar strongly condemned the arrests, saying that the court has clearly ordered that the family be allowed to meet the PTI founder, a private media outlet reported.

Barrister Gohar termed the detention of the PTI founder’s sisters “illegal and unconstitutional,” and asserted that no court order imposed conditional terms for such meetings.

“We did not pelt stones at police nor did we make any call for protest. We only came here to show support for the PTI founder’s sisters,” reports quoted him as saying.

Will remain outside Adiala Jail until allowed to meet Imran Khan: Aleema Khan

The sister of incarcerated former premier Imran Khan, Aleema Khan, has stated that she will peacefully remain outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi until she is allowed to meet her brother.

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail today, Aleema, who was accompanied by her sisters,  said that she was expected to meet Imran Khan in jail at 2 pm. She vowed to hold a protest if denied a meeting with her incarcerated brother.

In response to a question from a reporter, Aleema said that she had not been allowed to meet Imran Khan since March 20, adding that authorities did not reveal the reason for her being denied access to visit Adiala Jail.

However, Chairman PTI Barrister Gohar Khan, Barrister Ali Zafar, Zaheer Abbas, and other lawyers were allowed to enter the jail, media reports claims.

Aleema further said that a police force had been deployed so that they could not meet her brother. “Why aren’t they letting us meet,” she inquired.

Meanwhile, as per media reports, Aleema’s statement has prompted Rawalpindi police to implement extraordinary security measures around the prison.

Viewing the law and order situation, comprehensive security arrangements have been finalized, and special security teams have been formed under the supervision of Superintendent Police (SP) Saddar Division to secure the jail and surrounding areas.

Checkpoints have been established on seven entry routes leading to the jail. Elite Force personnel are stationed in the vicinity, and a large contingent of female police officers has been deployed at the Adiala Police Post.

Meanwhile, media reports claimed that traffic police would be positioned outside the jail to ensure smooth traffic flow during the protest.

Afghanistan is not our enemy: Imran Khan tells Aleema Khan

The sister of incarcerated former premier Imran Khan, Aleema Khan, on Tuesday, quoted her brother as stating that “Afghanistan is not our enemy.”

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Aleema quoted her brother as saying, “Afghanistan is not our enemy. Don’t attempt to make it the enemy.”

She further quoted Imran Khan as asking, “Why are you trying to trigger a war with Muslim brothers for no reason,” adding that whatever she was disclosing to the media was a private conversation with Imran Khan.

On being asked about Imran Khan’s point of view regarding the rapid uprising of terrorism in Pakistan, she argued that during her brother’s tenure as the country’s premier, terrorism was at its lowest level.

Aleema further said that terrorism in the country remained at its lowest level since 2021. However, a resurgence in terrorism was again observed in 2022. “You [reporter] will come to know after conducting research that the entire country accepts that he [Imran Khan] is the need of Pakistan,” and nobody can better handle terrorism issue than Imran Khan, she added.

Asked what the jailed Imran Khan’s reaction was after knowing that his party was not participating in Tuesday’s in-camera session of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS), Aleema stated that the PTI founder said his party would go to a PCNS meeting only with his permission.

Days after outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) terrorists attacked the Jaffar Express in the Bolan district of Balochistan last week, the in-camera session of the PCNS occurred on Tuesday.

The former ruling party did not attend the session. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, while speaking at a press conference in Islamabad hours before the initiation of the session, said that their party would skip the session until they were given access to the party founder in jail.

Raja confirmed that no PTI representative would participate except for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Ali Amin Gandapur, who is, in fact, attending the huddle in his capacity as the province’s representative.

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI) Lieutenant General Asim Malik, chief ministers of all four provinces including Ali Amin Gandapur, and other top officials had attended the meeting.

Complaining that her brother was not receiving newspapers nowadays and his TV set was turned off as well, she quoted her brother as claiming that he could talk to his children on the phone only four times during the last six months.

‘Bushra Bibi kept in isolation to pressurise me,’ Imran Khan alleges

Aleema Khan, the sister of incarcerated former Premier Imran Khan, has alleged that former First Lady Bushra Bibi has been denied access to her husband for the past three weeks.

Speaking outside Adiala Jail Rawalpindi on Tuesday (today), Aleema stated that after they inquired why the meeting had not been held, the jail administration informed them that they had been given orders against Bushra Bibi’s meeting with Imran Khan.

“Bushra Bibi was placed in isolation to break her down,” Aleema quoted her brother as saying.

Revealing the purpose behind Bushra’s isolation, she quoted her brother as saying, “They want to pressure me into accepting their demands.” However, when asked about the nature of the demands, Aleema said that Khan was unaware of them.

She also claimed that she held a protest at the Adiala Jail against the restrictions imposed on Imran Khan’s meeting with Bushra Bibi. “We received a message that if the protest continues, then our meetings with Khan in jail will also be suspended,” she added.

Additionally, Imran Khan had made it clear that he would not make any deal “no matter how much pressure they exert,” Aleema said, quoting her brother.

An accountability court in the federal capital sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and his wife to seven years last month.

The former premier and his wife were fined Rs. 1 million and Rs. 0.5 million, respectively. If they fail to pay the fines, the ex-prime minister will serve an additional six months, while Bushra Bibi will serve three more months.

According to the verdict, ex-PM Imran Khan was convicted of “corrupt practices” and “misuse of authority,” while the former First Lady was sentenced for “involvement in illegal activities.”

The 148-page verdict mentioned that Bibi’s role was limited to aiding and abetting the corruption offences, which is considered a mitigating circumstance in her sentencing.

Following the announcement of the 190-million-pound verdict, Bushra Bibi was instantly arrested.

It should be noted here that Bushra Bibi was arrested four months after she was released on bail in the Tosha Khana case in October 2024.

  • We’re praying Imran Khan gets convicted tomorrow: Aleema Khan

We’re praying Imran Khan gets convicted tomorrow: Aleema Khan

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, while talking to reporters today, stated that the courts would announce punishment for Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case tomorrow.

Imran Khan has faced these cases against him with so much patience while in prison, but you keep bringing up the stories of the deals,” she said, further commending him and adding, “He should be awarded an honourable mention.”

Aleema also asserted that the cases against Khan could have been completed “within four days, but it has taken them more than a year to drag them out,” adding that “When he [Imran Khan] comes out, we all will find out the legitimacy of these cases.”

She also said, “We are praying that Imran Khan will be punished tomorrow. Have you ever imagined we would say something like this? After his punishment, the case should be taken out of the jail court and brought to the High Court.”

The verdict in the £190m Al-Qadir Trust case against Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, was expected to be announced on January 13; however, the verdict was postponed for the third time.

Judge Nasir Javed Rana cited the absence of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi from appearing before the court in Adiala Jail as the primary reason for the postponement.

“Bushra Bibi had knowledge of the verdict being announced but did not appear before the court,” Judge Rana said. “The PTI founder was sent a message twice, but he also did not appear in court.”

The judge also mentioned that he had been present in court since 8:30 am, but “neither the suspects nor their lawyers appeared.” “The decision — fully ready and signed — is with me today,’ he asserted.

“The suspects were also given numerous chances during the trial,” Judge Rana added. According to the court, Imran had told jail officials that he would not appear in court until his lawyers and family members arrived.

Previously, the decision in the Al-Qadir Trust case had been postponed twice, on December 23, 2024, and January 6, 2025. It is now expected that the decision will be announced on January 17.

The Al-Qadir Trust case revolves around the allegation that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi illegally obtained billions of rupees and land worth hundreds of kanals from Bahria Town Ltd to legalise Rs50 billion that was identified and returned to the country by the United Kingdom during the previous PTI government.

  • ‘Gandapur brought Bani Gala offer to Imran Khan,’ reveals Aleema Khan

‘Gandapur brought Bani Gala offer to Imran Khan,’ reveals Aleema Khan

Aleema Khan, the sister of incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, has revealed that it was Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Ali Amin Gandapur who brought her brother the offer to shift him from Adiala Jail to his residence in Bani Gala.

Speaking to media persons outside the jail in Rawalpindi, Aleema said that CM Gandapur had brought the house arrest deal to Khan who had no intentions of making a backdoor deal.

“If he [Imran Khan] intended to make a backdoor deal, he would have done it by now instead of facing 200 cases,” she said, but did not reveal who was behind the offer that Gandapur conveyed.

It may be noted that Khan, in a statement on X, had last month said he was offered to be shifted from Adiala Jail to Bani Gala under house arrest, but he had refused the relief offer, saying that it was “illegal incarceration” in the first place. Amid speculations about where the offer had come from, government members had rubbished claims of any such offer for the jailed former premier.

On her brother’s condition, Aleema on Tuesday said his request for the provision of books had been refused and personal doctors were not allowed to visit him. “Imran Khan was even barred from talking to his children.”

In a sarcastic jibe at the government and judiciary, she also said that her brother was disappointed that he had not yet been sentenced in the Al Qadir Trust case.

To a question about why members of PTI’s negotiation committee were not allowed to meet Khan in jail, the incarcerated party founder’s sister said she could not make sense of it given how Khan was allowed to meet others. “We are facilitated to meet Imran Khan even at 7 am.”

It merits a mention that negotiations between the government and PTI have hit a roadblock since after last week’s second round of talks due to either side’s reluctance in agreeing to certain terms.

While the government has been stressing the need for PTI to present its demands in writing, the PTI itself refuses to hold a third round of talks before meeting and discussing the situation with Khan in jail.

Meanwhile, media reports have quoted PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as confirming that backchannel contacts have also been established for a possible solution to the political deadlock.

  • Imran Khan will urge overseas Pakistanis to halt remittances if demands are not met, says Aleema Khan

Imran Khan will urge overseas Pakistanis to halt remittances if demands are not met, says Aleema Khan

Aleema Khan, sister of former Premier Imran Khan, stated on Tuesday that her brother has warned that he would urge overseas Pakistanis to halt sending remittances if the government does not fulfill two of his demands.

“If a judicial commission comprising three senior Supreme Court judges is not established to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26 and political prisoners are not released, I will definitely give a call to overseas Pakistanis to stop sending remittances,” Aleema Khan quoted her brother as saying while speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.

Imran Khan’s sister claimed that overseas Pakistanis have already stressed that they will stop sending remittances once the party founder officially gives the call, but party leaders have advised Imran Khan to wait, fearing the move could badly affect the country’s economy.

“I care about the country, so I’ll wait a few more days,” Aleema quoted her brother as saying.

She alleged that with the help of former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, the incumbent government had compromised the independence of the judiciary by introducing amendments to the constitution.

“They [government] take their dollars abroad, […] while poor workers abroad send dollars back to Pakistan. You are running the country on those very dollars,” she said.

Additionally, Aleema mentioned that PTI’s political downfall was part of a London plan aimed at dismantling the party. She also condemned what she said was a crackdown on peaceful protests and party followers last month.

VIDEO: Aleema Khan ‘tears up’ describing Imran Khan’s jail conditions

Aleema Khan, the sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, can be seen in viral footage from December 13, engaging in an informal conversation with journalists about the conditions of the jail where her brother, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is detained.

When a reporter mentioned that Khan had been in prison for over a year, she corrected him, saying, “It has been a year and a half.”

The reporter then asked if Khan was able to speak to his sons abroad. Aleema replied, “He [Imran Khan] has said this multiple times in front of a judge. Every prisoner is allowed to talk with their family members once a week. Whatever Imran Khan requests, it is refused.”

She also revealed that Khan had asked for warm clothes, “but they don’t provide them to him,” adding, “It’s so cold, especially in his cell, because it’s open from above.”

“The second thing he asks for is a phone call with his sons, but they don’t allow that. If he asks for a book, it takes many days for them to deliver it. He’s asked for these three things, and we struggle to verify whether he’s been given them or not. They create so much confusion and delay,” Aleema remarked.

When a reporter asked if Imran Khan had requested “cornflakes cereal” in prison, she replied, “No, he has never asked for anything like that. He has only asked for these three things: warm clothes, books, and phone calls with his sons.”

Reiterating the conditions of his cell, Aleema further explained that it is open from above, and plastic sheets are placed above in winter. “But as you know, it doesn’t have much effect on the temperature because the breeze passes through.”

“We offered to give him weighted blankets for warmth, but according to prison rules, that’s not allowed. Only comforters are allowed. We will try again to provide him with other things for warmth. He has been given a small fan heater, but it doesn’t help much because of the open cell,” Aleema added.

“They don’t turn on the TV either, and he said that although it only has the PTV channel, he wanted to watch it. But they don’t allow that. The newspapers resumed a few days ago,” stated Aleema Khan.

Imran Khan has also instructed his party leaders and supporters to launch a “civil disobedience” movement starting December 14. He demanded the release of PTI workers and called for the formation of a five-member negotiation team in a statement from his X account.

  • Khan’s sisters are respectable, but party policy will be made by our committee: Shandana Gulzar

Khan’s sisters are respectable, but party policy will be made by our committee: Shandana Gulzar

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shandana Gulzar, while talking to a reporter, has stated that despite what Imran Khan’s sisters say, party policy “will be made by the parliamentary or political core committee.”

In recent times, controversy and infighting have surrounded the PTI as its founder, Imran Khan, has been in jail for more than a year while reportedly jail conditions become tougher for him. Party supporters are generally disappointed with the current leadership for their failure to get Khan out of jail or stop the recent 26th Amendment.

One controversy is that Khan’s sisters, especially Aleema Khan, have taken a significant role in delivering Khan’s message to the people.

Aleema Khan, the most politically active member of his family, and Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, have also clashed multiple times since Khan’s arrest and subsequent incarceration.

In August this year, many journalists talking to Imran inside Adiala Jail reportedly said that they heard Aleema and Bushra shouting at each other in a tiff over a female lawyer.

Around the same time, a message allegedly sent by Aleema Khan to Raoof Hasan asking him not to spread a “foolish” message that Bushra Bibi had sent was leaked to the public. However, the two have never publicly criticized each other.

However, the PTI leader Shandana Gulzar has stated: “Khan saab’s sisters are respectable but PTI follows parliamentary leaders, policy will be made by parliamentary party as Salman Akram Raja has clearly explained.”

Furthermore, in the short clip getting traction on X (formerly Twitter), the PTI leader also stated, “They [Khan’s sisters] have been very useful for the party. They gave us that information from Khan SB in difficult times when no one else could have. As for our party, Khan has always hated family or dynastic politics, but we’ll wait for Khan’s further orders.”

Aleema Khan reveals details of how she was arrested

Aleema Khan, the sister of the founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, has revealed details of how, along with her sister Uzma Khan, was arrested during the Islamabad protest.

Sardar Qadeer Advocate posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) in which Aleema Khan said that federal capital police arrested her following an interview she gave to a journalist, stressing, “We were not committing any violation at that time.”

She said, “Section 144 was imposed, not a curfew; I could have been arrested only if the curfew was imposed.”

Aleema Khan revealed that many elderly women around 60 to 80 years of age were detained by federal police in the same cell as her, and the police didn’t provide them medicine for two days.

Imran Khan’s sister said that they were deceived when the police shifted them to the I-H police line instead of presenting them before the court, and added, “We were apprehended, not even served food or medicines for multiple hours on the last day. The next morning, we did not have cash; police collected money to buy food and then served us breakfast.”

She demanded that authorities provide proof of the section 144 violation allegedly committed by the elderly detained women: “If it were proven, they would embrace even ten-year imprisonment.”
