  • 4.4 magnitude earthquake jolts Islamabad, parts of KP

    An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Thursday evening, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre website.

    There were no immediate reports of casualties or loss of property.

    According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the earthquake struck 25 kilometres southeast of Mingora in KP and had a depth of 20 km.

    A strong earthquake of reportedly 6.4 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted different parts of the country on Friday night.

    The tremors were felt in the federal capital and cities across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), including Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Mardan, North Waziristan, Swat, Multan, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Lahore and adjoining areas.

    No losses of property or lives have so far been reported.

    However, panic spread amid the tremors as people were seen evacuating their houses and other buildings, reciting the Kalma.

    The epicenter of the quake is being reported as Tajikistan.

    Citizens have been advised to remain careful as the aftershocks of the earthquake are expected.

    Earthquake hits Swat on 15th anniversary of deadly 7.6 quake

    A moderate intensity earthquake has jolted Mingora in Swat and adjoining areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on the 15th anniversary of the deadly 7.6 quake.

    According to reports, the intensity of tremors was recorded 4.7 on the Richter scale.

    The depth of the quake was 100 kilometres with its epicentre in the Hindukush Mountain range, according to seismological reports.

    The 2005 Kashmir earthquake also occurred on October 8. It was centred near the city of Muzaffarabad and had also affected Balakot city in KP. The quake claimed thousands of lives and caused massive damage to infrastructure, especially in Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) and KP.

    On Thursday, the 15th anniversary of victims of the deadly earthquake was observed across Pakistan, including AJK. Last year in September, a 5.8-magnitude quake hit different parts of AJK. The quake hit some urban and rural parts of the region, including Muzaffarabad, Kotli and other areas.

    At least 40 people died and more than 500 were injured as a result of the earthquake. Around 6,000 houses were destroyed completely, while 7,100 cattle farms were also damaged.

    Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives and damage to property after an earthquake in Pakistan killed at least 40 and left more than 500 people injured.

    The Twitter handle “PMO India” wrote, “PM has expressed grief on the loss of lives and damage to property due to an earthquake in parts of India and Pakistan”.

    “PM expresses condolences to the families of the deceased and prays for the speedy recovery of those injured”, said the Tweet.

    A powerful 5.8-magnitude earthquake jolted several parts of Pakistan on Tuesday, particularly areas of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

    According to the geological wing of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the epicenter of the quake was stated to be one kilometer (km) southeast of Mirpur, 10 km beneath the earth’s surface.

    After an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted different parts of the country on Tuesday, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning that aftershocks are highly likely in the next 24 hours.

    When an earthquake strikes, most people believe that the best solution is to run out of their houses and offices but this might not be the safest solution.

    Here are a few tips you can follow to be safe:

    If you are indoor when an earthquake strikes

    Drop, Cover, Hold – Drop to your hands and knees. Cover your head and neck with your hands and hold your position until the tremors stop.

    Do not run outside – Falling debris or things from the roof can fall on you.

    Avoid using elevators

    If you are not near a desk or a table, drop to the floor next to an interior wall and protect your head and neck with your arms.

    If in bed stay there and cover head with a pillow, get out of bed only when tremors stop and wear footwear.

    Stay away from glass windows and doors.

    Do not go near to any furniture, large appliances, mirrors, cabinets filled with heavy items and hanging objects.

    If you are outdoors when an earthquake strikes

    Move to a clear area if you can do so safely. Avoid buildings, power lines, trees and other hazards.

    If you are near a tall building then get as far away from it when jolts start.

    If you are driving then safely pull over to the side of the road and stop when you are able to do so.

    Avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines, signs, trees and other things that might collapse or fall on the vehicle.

    Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking ends. If a power line falls onto your vehicle, stay inside until a trained person removes the hazard.

    As per the details, an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Lahore among other parts of northern and central Punjab besides Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and AJK.

    According to the geological wing of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the epicenter of the quake was stated to be one kilometer (km) southeast of Mirpur, 10 km beneath the earth’s surface.

    People of the areas where the quake was felt, rushed out of their homes and offices in panic reciting Quranic verses.

    At least three people were killed and 50 others injured after roads in Mirpur collapsed due to the intensity of the quake. Several vehicles, including passenger buses, were also seen falling and getting stuck in the massive cracks.

    People of the areas where the quake was felt, rushed out of their homes and offices in panic reciting Quranic verses. At least 50 people were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals in Mirpur.
