    Elon Musk plans to fire Twitter employees to save money

    Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is putting his plans into action after acquiring Twitter for $44 billion. In an attempt to obtain money for the takeover, he told banks that he wanted to cut the salaries of board members and executives and also pitched ideas for monetizing tweets.

    Musk presented the pitch to the financiers just days after making his bid on Twitter on April 14. He previously stated that if the offer was accepted, board members’ wages will be cut to zero, saving Twitter $3 million per year. It seems clear that Musk plans to lay off people to save money.

    The tech mogul also remarked that Twitter has a considerably smaller gross margin than similar sites like Facebook and Pinterest. He claimed that this freed up a lot of room for the corporation to run more cost-effectively.

    Musk detailed his ambitions to create features that will help his company generate more money from tweets that contain essential information or become viral.

    In the near future, a fee could be charged if a third-party website quotes or incorporates a tweet from verified individuals or organisations.

    Former United States (US) President, Donald Trump has announced that he has no intention to rejoin Twitter following the agreement with Elon Musk to buy the social media platform.

    While talking to Fox News on Monday, Trump revealed that he is satisfied with his own platform, Truth Social which was launched earlier this year.

    He said, “I am not going on Twitter. I am going to stay on Truth,” Trump was quoted telling the network. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on Truth.”

    Trump’s account was suspended after he incited violence on January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack through the social media platform. He had about 89 million followers on Twitter at that time.

    Trump has sued Twitter, Facebook, and Google’s YouTube against censoring his posts while posts by conservative commentators are widely shared on social media.

    In an interview, he said that he welcomed Elon Musk’s decision to buy Twitter, but he want to focus on his own platform. He did not see Twitter as his competitor.

    He said, “Truth Social will be a voice for me,” he said. “And that’s something nobody else can get.”

    Elon Musk is the world’s richest person and advocates free speech on all platforms. He had said before that he wanted to purchase Twitter and privatize it to allow free speech on the platform. He proposed some changes to the platform, including relaxing restrictions on content. Yesterday, he closed the purchase agreement for $44billion with the company.

    In the last few months, the popular Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has made news by adding new and widely requested features in its Beta releases.

    Many other features, including enhanced file sharing size, emoji reactions, and the ability to hide last seen from select contacts, will be available in the live release of the app soon, according to the business.

    As per reports, WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new update for iOS that includes support for 32-person talks, a redesigned call user interface, waveforms, and other enhancements. On iOS, the update will be available in the live build of WhatsApp.

    Until now, WhatsApp users had been able to make group phone calls with numerous people at once. Previously, a group voice discussion could only hold up to eight people, but WhatsApp is now rolling out a new version that allows up to 32 individuals to join.

    In WhatsApp Groups, voice calls with up to 32 participants would be possible. To accommodate the new members, the platform has changed the way participants are displayed on the screen. Different WhatsApp users are labeled using waveform pictures.

    This new capability is included in the update version 22.8.80, which is 109.7MB in size for iOS devices. Android users will get a similar upgrade with these additional features in the near future, but it will not be available on the windows or desktop version.

    Elon Musk offers $43 billion to acquire Twitter

    Elon Musk has submitted a takeover bid for Twitter, offering $54.20 per share, days after becoming the group’s largest shareholder. This is an offer worth more than $43 billion.

    According to a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, Mr. Musk described this as a “best and last offer,” reflecting a 54 per cent premium over the day before he commenced investing in the business in late January 2022.

    Musk stated in the filing that “I don’t have faith in the management” and that he could not make the adjustments he desired in the public market.

    As per a letter written to CEO Salesforce and chairman of Twitter, Bret Taylor, Musk stated that if the proposal is not accepted, he will reassess his status as a shareholder as Twitter has a lot of potential which needs to be unlocked.

    The billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and the world’s richest man, purchased a 9.2 per cent share in Twitter on April 4, according to a regulatory filing. The tech mogul was invited to join Twitter’s board of directors the next day, but he denied the offer by the end of the week.

    Musk wrote to Mr. Taylor on April 13: “I invested in Twitter because I believe it has the potential to be the global platform for free speech, and I believe free speech is a societal requirement for a healthy democracy”.

    “However, after making my investment, I’ve come to recognize that the company, in its current form, can neither thrive nor serve this societal need,” he wrote. “Twitter should be turned into a private firm”.

    Considering the tweeted document, Musk’s financial adviser for the proposal is Morgan Stanley.

    Instagram may introduce voice message replies for stories soon

    Instagram is reportedly working on a feature that would allow users to reply to stories with a picture or a voice message. This was signaled by the application developer, Alessandro Paluzzi, who further mentioned in his tweet that Instagram is also testing a feature that will allow users to share posts using a QR code.

    Paluzzi’s screenshots show the traditional message box where you may reply to users’ stories, with a twist, as one snapshot includes a GIF sign, while another has a mic icon in addition to the GIF button that was already available.

    Users will probably use these icons to respond to Instagram stories with an image or a voice message.

    The social media platform introduced a feature in February that allowed users to like other users’ stories without having to respond with a direct message.

    Until then, the only option to respond to a story was to send a direct message to the user through the text box at the bottom of the story (or using pre-set emojis, GIFS, or stickers, which were almost similar.

    The rumored new picture reply function will complement existing capabilities and provide users with more options for creatively responding to stories. These features are also well-suited to Instagram’s long-term strategy.

    All of this may be included in the coming days as the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, had already stated that the Meta-owned platform will be focusing on the videos, messaging as well as creators.

    Facebook has decided to lock Facebook accounts that did not activate the ‘Facebook Protect’ feature. Facebook has sent e-mails to all its users, however, many of them did not respond to it.

    Many users have received e-mails with the subject, “Your account requires advanced security from Facebook Protect.”

    In the e-mail, Facebook sent a link and requested users to click the link and activate ‘Facebook Protect’ for more protection. It also warned if users did not activate this feature, users would not have access to their profile after the deadline, March 17.

    However, some users did not respond to it at all as they considered it a spam message.

    According to Facebook, this feature is “a program designed for people that are likely to be highly targeted by malicious hackers, including human rights defenders, journalists, and government officials.”

    Facebook sent emails through security@facebookmail.com. As the deadline to activate ‘Facebook Protect’ passed, many users have lost access to their accounts.

    Don’t want that friendship message? Meta introduces online women safety initiatives in Pakistan

    Meta has launched an online safety initiative for women in Pakistan that includes Online Safety Guide and StopNCII (Non-consensual intimate images). These programs would provide protection to women users in cyberspace.

    Online Safety Guide, is available on “Safety@Facebook” to connect with established helplines in Pakistan. It is easily accessible in both languages English and Urdu to avoid restraints in providing assistance to victims. There are safety guide tools that will help women to protect themselves from online fraud.

    Stop NCII.org is a platform where women can register their case if someone is threatening to leak their intimate image online which is referred to as ‘Revenge Porn’.

    This platform was established with the help of Meta’s expert guidance. It was funded by the collaboration of a global NGO partner —the UK Revenge Porn Helpline.

    It was already providing global services and now it has joined collaboration with regional partners to advocate the rights of victims.

    The portal is also available in the Urdu language so that women will not hesitate in asking for assistance from experts.

    The partner of Meta in Pakistan, Digital Rights Foundation (DRF) has organised an online roundtable for launching the Urdu-based portal of Stop NCII in Pakistan.

    Giant social media platform, Facebook has joined its rival social media platform, Tiktok. The company created its official account last week which reached more than 18k followers. It is verified now but has not uploaded any videos on the account.

    A Facebook spokesperson also confirmed the Facebook account on Tiktok to a news agency Adweek.

    He said, “Brands leverage a variety of channels, including some of our social media platforms, to reach and engage with the people using their products and services every day. Our intent with establishing a brand presence and cultivating a community on platforms like Tiktok or others is no different.”

    Facebook has an official account on Twitter as well which is also a rival platform.

    Metaverse recently introduced reels on Instagram which has an audience from 150 countries. The company has already announced monetisation features for advertisers on the platform.

    Tiktok also has a verified account with 26 million followers on Instagram.

    Russia blocks Facebook, restricts Twitter access

    The Russian government has officially blocked Facebook and has restricted Twitter in the country.

    The regulator, Roskomnadzor, said there had been 26 cases of discrimination against Russian media by Facebook since October 2020, including restrictions in recent days on state-backed channels like RT and the RIA news agency, Reuters has reported.

    Meta’s head of global affairs Nick Clegg said the company would continue to do everything it could to restore its services.

    “Soon millions of ordinary Russian will find themselves cut off from reliable information, deprived of their everyday ways of connecting with family and friends and silenced from speaking out,” he said, in a statement posted on Twitter.

    Meta in a blog said it was working to keep its services available “to the greatest extent possible” but it had stopped showing ads to users in Russia and barred Russian advertisers from running ads anywhere in the world “due to the difficulties of operating in Russia at this time.”
