‘Apology or criminal prosecution’: Talha Anjum served legal notice for draping Indian flag

Pakistani rapper Talha Anjum has been served a legal notice for draping the Indian flag during his concert in Kathmandu last week.

Reports quoted the notice as claiming that the rapper “inflicted widespread outrage, mental anguish, and profound injury to the national, patriotic and religious sentiments of millions of Pakistani citizens both domestically and abroad”.

It further stated that Talha’s actions “exacerbated existing tensions between Pakistan and India, where diplomatic and military relations remain severely strained due to historical conflicts, border disputes and ongoing security concerns”.

The notice demanded an “unconditional public apology” from the rapper, warning that non-compliance would result in filing of an FIR and criminal prosecutions without further notice.

It merits a mention that Talha’s move had earlier this week sparked extreme reactions from people on this side of the border.

Critics reminded him that platforms, including YouTube and Spotify, had removed his tracks on Indian authorities’ orders, and questioned why he chose to show affection to a country where the government has “banned” him.

Responding to the backlash, the 30-year-old rapper, known for his blunt attitude and quick temper, had refused to back down.

“My heart has no place for hate. My art has no borders. If me raising an Indian flag sparks controversy so be it. I will do it again. I will never care about the media, the war mongering governments and their propagandas. Urdu rap is and will always be borderless [sic],” he had said in a post on X.

FIR registered after viral video shows woman driver assaulting biker

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against a woman, days after a video went viral online showing her abusing a bike rider, Syed Irfan, in Islamabad.

The FIR, filed at the Women’s Police Station in Islamabad’s Sector G-7 on Tuesday, stated that the unknown woman hit the rider from behind with her silver Toyota Corolla on Monday around 5 PM at Sector G-6, outside Polyclinic Hospital.

“When I [Irfan] stopped, the woman again attempted to hit me at high speed,” the FIR stated, prompting the rider to put his hand on the car bonnet, causing the bike to fall to the ground.

Additionally, the FIR stated that when the car stopped, the woman instantly came out and physically assaulted the rider. “While abusing, the woman beat and threatened to kill me. The unknown woman attempted to kill me through negligence, carelessness, and over-speeding,” the FIR read.

In the viral video, the woman can be heard hurling abusive words while committing an offence against the rider, whereas the rider can be heard giving clarifications to the woman.

“How dare you touch my car? Why did you hit my car?” the woman shouted at the rider, arguing that her car was more expensive than his bike. Bystanders tried to calm the situation, but the woman persisted in her aggressive behaviour before finally leaving in her car.

Media reports claim that police have begun raids to arrest the accused woman, identified as Masooma Bibi, a resident of Bani Gala.

Since the video went viral, it has sparked outrage online, with social media users lambasting her for assaulting the rider.

A social media user wrote, “Instead of apologising after hitting the motorbike rider, she started beating the poor boy and also hurling nasty abuses. No one is going to question the elite who oppress the poor.”

“It is possible that the Bykea rider was at fault, but the woman acted as if she were the judge. She hurled obscene insults at the Bykea rider and humiliated him. Does the poor have no one to speak for them? Will the Islamabad police take any action against the woman?” another user opined.

One user, however, asserted that the woman was mentally unfit. In response, a netizen questioned how she could take the car on the road if she was mentally unfit, arguing that this is a tactic used to shield the elite from accountability.

  • TLP’s Pir Zaheerul Hasan Shah arrested for inciting violence against CJP Isa

TLP’s Pir Zaheerul Hasan Shah arrested for inciting violence against CJP Isa

Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) Vice Emir Pir Zaheerul Hasan Shah was arrested on Monday for inciting violence against the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, Geo News reported.

His arrest came after a case was filed against him for an inflammatory speech targeting the CJP outside the Lahore Press Club during a protest against the SC verdict in the Mubarak Sani case.

In February 2024, in the Mubarak Sani case the Supreme Court ruled that Ahmadis, while declared non-Muslims, retain the right to profess and proliferate their religion.

TLP, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S), Mili Yakjehti Council Pakistan (MYC) and Wafaqul Madaris-ul-Arabiya (WMA) voiced severe opposition to the court’s verdict in this case.

Pir Zaheerul Hasan Shah had gone in hiding in Okara but he was arrested, while his FIR includes provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act amongst others.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated, “The state will not allow anyone to issue a fatwa calling for someone’s murder.”

“There has been malicious propaganda about the chief justice and he has been targeted for a long time,” said the federal minister.

FIR registered against Ahmadis for sacrificing goats on Eid-ul-Azha

As Eid-ul-Azha approached, Muslims around the world including in Pakistan celebrated by enjoying public holidays, holding large social gatherings, giving meat to the needy but it has not been a festival for the minority Ahmadi community as right-wing religious activists, mostly from Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), targeted them on the Holy days.

Social media is abuzz with videos showing TLP members, helped by local police, searching for meat among the homes of Ahmadis.

In Gojra, an Ahmadi was booked for sacrificing a goat on Eid-ul-Azha on the complaint of a TLP activist.

“The suspect has committed severe abuse by following the rituals of Islam while pretending to be a Muslim,” said the FIR.

A spokesperson of Jamaat Ahmadiyya in Pakistan stated, “Shocking reports of police and extremists raiding Ahmadi homes, confiscating meat. What kind of Eid celebrations is this for Ahmadis in Pakistan?”

A 2022 Supreme Court judgement by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah ruled that obstructing non-Muslims from practising their religion within the confines of their place of worship was against the Constitution.

The 2022 written order stated, “to deprive a non-Muslim (minority) of our country from holding his religious beliefs, to obstruct him from professing and practicing his religion within the four walls of his place of worship is against the grain of our democratic Constitution and repugnant to the spirit and character of our Islamic Republic.”
