  • How eating three dates every day can benefit your mind and body?

How eating three dates every day can benefit your mind and body?

Healthy for the body and mind dates are considered to be a healthy indulgence. Dates are the delicious snack for any time of day. If you develop the habit of eating three of these soft and yummy fruit every day for one week, you may benefit your mind and body.

    Long-Lasting energy

Dates contain the natural sugars, glucose, fructose and sucrose that will help you boost your energy quickly whenever you need it. Dates contain other healthy components like fiber, potassium, magnesium, vitamins, and antioxidants that will maintain energy levels. So instead of having harmful energy drinks, you can have dates to increase your energy.

    Reduced risk of colon cancer

Along with ensuring that food moves through the digestive system at a healthy rate, dates also make sure the gut itself is healthy and free from harmful bacteria. When the digestive system and gut are working well then so is the colon, resulting in a reduced risk of colon cancer.

A study conducted by the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences found that those who consumed dates had enhanced colon health because dates increased the growth of good bacteria, preventing the growth of colon cancer cells.

    Improved digestive health

Dates improve your digestive system because of the fiber. In just a one-cup serving, you will get 12 grams of fiber. That’s 48 percent of your recommended daily intake. Fiber can benefit your digestive health by averting constipation.

A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that people who consumed seven dates per day for 21 days showed improvements in stool frequency compared to when they did not eat dates.

    Help you cope with stress

Dates contain Vitamin B6 that can improve the performance of the brain by helping the body make serotonin and norepinephrine. Serotonin (a compound present in blood platelets) regulates mood and norepinephrine (an organic chemical that functions in the brain) helps your body deal with stress.

Research has shown that low levels of Vitamin B6 are linked to depression. When your brain is clear from stress, and in a good mood, then it is sharp and ready to learn.

  • New York Chicken and Rice: Did Karachi’s Walla get it right?

New York Chicken and Rice: Did Karachi’s Walla get it right?

Anyone and everyone who has been to New York City has tried – and raved about – Halal Guy’s chicken and rice. The dish is so popular that there are copycat recipes of it online. I’ve tried making it once but to tell the truth, is not as easy as it looks.

The key is the sauce and the rice and of course, the chicken. You really need to get all three down to create that New York synergy.

The Halal Guys in New York. Check out those lines

A new hole in a wall restaurant in Karachi, Walla, situated in the upcoming restaurant hub on Khayban-e-Shahbaz, is run by a Pakistani who spent many years abroad. He’s come back because he believes there is a big market for a shawarma and chicken and rice joint in Karachi – and says that business has been good.

    Walla

I went in specifically to have the chicken and rice – and to see if it lived up to it’s inspiration.

Walla, which means “I Promise” in Arabic is a strange name for a restaurant but maybe since it has an instant Arabic recall, it was the name of choice. With a black and orange theme, an animated Shaikh with shades, it’s not your regular dhabba-style “Arbi Shawarma” joint. Seems like it’s got an uplift, perhaps an ode to the modernism being declared by Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman.

    The interior

    I called and ordered ahead:

“Just the chicken and rice?” the person taking my order asked.

    “Yes, with extra sauce.”

The white sauce was on point. Perfectly seasoned, with the right amount of garlic and yogurt. I could have just sat there and taken tiny spoonfuls of the sauce with nothing else. This particular chicken and rice also had a red sauce, which felt a little unnecessary – and also under seasoned. If they really wanted to keep the red sauce, they should just mix a little more than necessary Sriracha in the white sauce and be done with it.

I added a lot of white sauce and a sliver of red

The chicken was tender and flavourful, perfectly balanced. It had the tang of lemon and the zest of coriander but the knife in the heart of this almost, almost perfect dish was the rice.

I assume the chef thought that a Pakistani palette would require Pakistani masala. So instead of the rice being slightly tinted with yellow turmeric, the rice was shoved into haldi like no one’s business. With a mix of other masalas, the taste of the rice was so overpowering, it took over the whole chicken and rice and that’s where it’s New York inspiration disappeared into the Times Square sir. Poof.

Meanwhile, I didn’t try the shawarma but I’ve heard good reviews.

While Walla did not match up to Halal Guys, much to our disappointment, it was a close second and decent place one can go in case the cravings get unbearable. As for the rest of those who haven’t tried Halal Guys, you’ll probably enjoy it more.

Number plates with ‘Ajrak’ logos to be introduced in Sindh

The Excise Department of Sindh has decided to introduce new, technologically advanced number plates for vehicles and motorbikes with Ajrak logos by 2020.

As per reports, the manufacturing of these number plates, installed with chips and Ajrak logos, will take place in the first phase.

These modern number plates will contain all details about the vehicle including its model, owner, and other information. Stealing vehicles will also be caught by this initiative.

The approval for the number of plates will be first taken from the provincial cabinet and CM Murad Ali Shah.

Earlier in September, it was revealed that 15,000 vehicles of various government organisations and departments are being used without their original number plates.

The Excise Department confirmed that different departments of the Sindh government have not received original number plates for the allotted vehicles. Under the Sindh police, 8,000 government vehicles do not have original number plates, according to the report.

Mostly, the vehicles belong to senior officers which are being used with duplicate number plates.

  • Big idea into a successful business? Read this book

Big idea into a successful business? Read this book

The first thing you need to know about the book “Sprint: How to Solve Big Problems and Test New Ideas in Just Five Days” is that it’s been written by the guys at Google. Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky and Braden Kowitz are three partners at Google Ventures, an organisation that helps entrepreneurs by investing in their startups.

Post it notes play a big role in the Sprint methodology

The book isn’t tedious at all, which is what someone would expect from a book that discusses how to resolve problems. It gives you simple instructions and examples on how to sort out the issue your start up (or big firm) is facing.

The book is very hands on, asking the reader to arrange five days for five long sessions of meetings to identify a problem, question it, work it out and test it. So in just five days, you are able to test an idea and see if it works or not.

Interactive brainstorming leads to effective meetings

Although the method described in the book is for an already up and running startup, or a big business, the ideas and methodology can apply to one person or two. It just helps sort out a muddled idea or a difficult plan. And is a fun read too.

Don’t want to buy or read the book? Here is the video version of what the book is all about

We actually tried implementing the method which is why we are such big fans of it. We used the plan for day one and day two and implemented it on a small group of people who needed to resolve a problem and it was an effective way of getting the problem identified and also coming up with a solution to resolve it.

COMSATS student dies after management allegedly refuse him medical support

A student from Business Administration (BBA) department Inam in Comsats University Islamabad campus died today due to a severe heart attack and delay in medical treatment.

His fellow student has claimed that the reason for his death was a heart attack but he could have been saved if medical support was provided to him on time.

As per reports, Inam got a severe heart attack. Fellow students called for an ambulance but it was unable to respond for 40 minutes.

One of his classmates also tried to bring his car to take him to the hospital but the guards did not let him and said that personal cars were not allowed to enter. The student passed away before the arrival of the ambulance.

A massive protest has broken out, and students are demanding justice for Inam. They blame administration for the carelessness and are of the view that unnecessary restrictions on students’ mobility caused Inam’s death. They are calling for the accountability of those responsible for a precious life lost.

Currently, Comsats gates are sealed, and buses are not allowed to leave. The faculty and the management are locked inside the campus.

  • Dog culling: You don’t have to be an animal lover, but at least be human

Dog culling: You don’t have to be an animal lover, but at least be human

We starve them, kidnap them and even murder them, but the moral community that rejects the abuse of humans, does not consider what we are doing to animals as something wrong.

If you reside in any of the big cities of Pakistan, you must have woken up to the sounds of gunshots every few months. Gunshots, loud whimpers, more gunshots and then complete silence… a deafening silence.

Dog culling, which basically means to kill, takes place to reduce the population of stray dogs and the occurrence of rabies. It is a brutal and outdated practice that still exists in a few countries around the world — Pakistan being one of them.

As per a study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2010, around 97,000 dog bite cases are reported every year in Pakistan, however, there are still no exact figures of the number of deaths caused by rabies. And the governments’ solution to combating the spread of the deadly disease, is dog culling.

Every year, thousands of dogs are brutally murdered by being shot or poisoned. The government, under the municipal department, hires ‘dog shooters’, whose only job is to kill all the dogs in any area. These shooters are given old guns, which mostly miss the target, resulting in injured dogs suffering for hours as they slowly bleed to death.

According to the World Animal Protection (WAP), “Culling dogs is not the solution to rabies”. It is also not the solution to decrease dog population, because, for every dog that’s left, eight more puppies will be born and with the imbalance created in the environment due to dog culling, more food will be available for the new ones.

The surviving animals will keep on reproducing and these new dogs will then move to areas that were previously made ‘dog-free’. This cycle continues every year, the dog population doesn’t decrease and nor is rabies contained. So what is the solution that can eliminate both rabies and dog population? It is TNVR.

TNVR stands for Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return. You pick up dogs from the streets, spay/neuter them so they can no longer reproduce; vaccinate them so they do not get rabies, tag them or chip them and then return them to the area they were found in. This way, stray dogs will not only be free of rabies, but their population will also gradually start to decrease.

As per WAP, “the only way to eliminate the virus is through vaccination. Vaccinating at least 70% of the dogs in an area creates herd immunity, slowing the spread of rabies until it dies out”.

A single female can produce up to 2,048 puppies in just four years! Now imagine the effect of spaying one female. A study in India (Reece & Chawla, 2006) reported a decrease of 31.8% to 51% in dog population in six years when 50% or 70% of the population was spayed and neutered. Meanwhile, Thailand has seen a decline of 50% in just five years.

If we just talk about rabies drives, countries as Panama, Chile, Brazil and Argentina initiated countrywide rabies vaccine drives that have led to them being rabies-free for over 10 years now.

One of the major reasons why no time is spent on campaigns such as TNVR is because of the public opinion regarding dogs. In our society, dogs are looked down upon, and we consider them as non-feeling, non-thinking beings.

However, according to a 2012 University of Cambridge study, animals have a conscience, which means they think, feel and respond to the world in the same way as humans, but just because they express their emotions differently, we tend to overlook them.

The result of this willful forgetfulness is reflected in the way we treat dogs. We stone, beat and even shoot them dead every day.

Imagine the same for a human being; where he or she is starved, kidnapped, poisoned, murdered, shot or tortured. Most governmental bodies around the world, NGOs and individuals would agree that such acts are wrong. They would criminalise such acts and punish those who commit them.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for animals, their abuse is accepted by the same moral community that rejects the abuse of humans. As a society, we still do not see what we are doing to animals as something wrong. We are okay with watching animals suffer; we are okay with the constant and widespread abuse of animals.

Perhaps it is time for the citizens of this country to wake up and take a good hard look in the mirror. Have we become the very monsters we speak of? Have we become so selfish that we refuse to acknowledge the abuse that takes place outside our homes every day? Have we become so arrogant that we deny basic rights to other living beings around us? Have we completely lost humanity and compassion? But most importantly, are we even human anymore?
