    Imran Abbas wants politicians to take Karachi as seriously as Tabish Hashmi’s joke

    Actor Imran Abbas has weighed in on the controversy surrounding comedian and TV host Tabish Hashmi, defending him after strong criticism from Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.

    Sharing his views on Instagram, Abbas said the reaction from politicians missed the real issues highlighted in Hashmi’s remarks. 

    “If politicians took Karachi even 1/100th as seriously as they take Tabish Hashmi’s joke, since anyone can tell it wasn’t said in a literal sense, they wouldn’t be dodging the real issues he was pointing out,” Abbas wrote in an Instagram story without naming any politician.

    The debate began after Hashmi, while discussing the deadly Gul Plaza fire during a program on a private news channel, suggested the privatisation of Karachi. Comparing the situation to the government’s decision to privatise Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Hashmi said Karachi’s residents could manage the city better themselves.

    “If the government realised it could not run PIA and decided to privatise it, then Karachi should also be privatised. We, the people of Karachi Pathan, Baloch, Sindhi, Muhajir, Punjabi will handle it ourselves. If this is the current standard of governance, we can run it better, because it cannot be run worse than this,” he said.

    Sharjeel Inam Memon responded sharply to the comments, calling them “foolish” and “stupid” while speaking to journalists on Tuesday. Without naming Hashmi, the senior minister said the individual lacked an understanding of constitutional law, history, and the geography of Sindh.

    “The individual who said this had neither studied constitutional law nor understood Sindh’s historical and geographical importance. Such comments showed a serious lack of awareness about Sindh’s constitutional role within Pakistan,” Memon said.

    He also urged the concerned private television channel to conduct an internal inquiry and take disciplinary action against the anchorperson. “Media organisations must promote responsible journalism and avoid spreading misleading narratives about Karachi and Sindh,” he added.

    Memon further stressed Sindh’s central role in the creation of Pakistan and said many people comment on sensitive issues related to Karachi without proper knowledge of the province’s history and geography.

    The remarks came in the aftermath of a massive fire at Gul Plaza on the night of January 17. The blaze destroyed the multi-storey shopping complex, which housed around 1,200 shops selling children’s clothing, toys, crockery, and household items.

    According to reports, authorities have recovered more than 79 bodies so far, while rescue teams continue search operations at the site.

    Actor Imran Abbas has expressed disappointment over being labelled a liar for sharing that he was offered roles in multiple Bollywood films. He stated that he faced criticism despite never lying about the offers.

    Abbas stated in a recent interview, “People called me a liar when I revealed I was considered for the Heera Mandi web series.” 

    Sanjay Leela Bhansali, however, later confirmed that he had thought about casting Imran Abbas and other Pakistani artists.

    Imran Abbas disclosed during interviews on various national TV channels that he had received offers for multiple Bollywood films, which he couldn’t accept. He was, nonetheless, accused of lying, criticised, and mocked.

    He claimed that the Pakistani public and journalists believed certain Indian journalists – who are banned in India for spreading lies – over him.

    Without naming anyone, he said his statements about Bollywood offers were dismissed as lies under the influence of Indian journalists.

    Imran Abbas emphasised that he has been in the entertainment industry for 20 years and has worked in several Indian films. He questioned, “Why would I lie about such matters on TV?”

    He further explained, “Filmmakers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rajkumar Hirani are well-known figures, and I would never lie using their names.”

    He clarified, “I have always stated that I was offered several Bollywood projects but never claimed I rejected them.”

    Imran Abbas also expressed that he genuinely wanted to work in the films he was offered but could not because of circumstances, not because he turned them down.

    “I was offered not only the Heera Mandi web seriess but also Aashiqui 2. But, at the time, I was working on another project under Akshay Kumar’s production, which prevented me from taking up the role due to contractual obligations,” he said.

    Similarly, Sanjay Leela Bhansali offered him a role in the 2010 film Guzaarish, but unfortunately, he could not accept it.

    Imran Abbas also disclosed, “I was offered a role in Aamir Khan’s blockbuster film PK. I was considered for the role of Sarfaraz, played by Sushant Singh Rajput. However, I couldn’t work on that film either.”

    He expressed regret that even people in villages dismissed his claims as lies and refused to believe him, which saddened and disappointed him deeply.

    Imran Abbas made a strong appeal on Instagram: “Ceasefire now… What are we waiting for? Even the UK is speaking up, so why are we Muslims staying silent? You don’t need to belong to any religion to feel the pain of burning children and humans alive. There’s no excuse for this terrible brutality.”

    Hollywood actor Jenna Ortega, known for starring her role in the Netflix series ‘Wednesday,’ focused on the ongoing suffering of children in the genocide. In a post highlighting the harsh reality, she said, “People are arguing about a ceasefire while many children are still being killed. Where is the humanity?”

    Model and actor Saheefa Jabbar Khattak, who often speaks out on social media about important issues, shared her thoughts on Instagram. She criticized people who compare Israel’s treatment of Palestinians to Pakistan’s treatment of its minorities. Saheefa mentioned Kim Kardashian’s recent comment of “All lives matter” in response to a call for Palestinian liberation.

    Saheefa disagreed with the idea and said, “To those who say I should focus on problems in my own country first, I say: please learn about ethnic cleansing and genocide. The terrible things happening to minorities in our country are also wrong and should be condemned.”

    “But please, don’t say that one should condemn one wrong but not the other. To the people in power in the government of Pakistan, I ask you, as a taxpayer, and as a citizen of your country, to stop the genocide in our country. No one deserves this cruelty. We must remember that our flag is incomplete without the color white, which represents our minorities who are also contributing to Pakistan’s growth and economy.”

    Saheefa’s message continued to urge for better education and activism: “Stop justifying genocide, unlawful killings, rapes, assaults, and violence. When the Black Lives Matter movement started, some people responded with ‘all lives matter,’ not because they believed it, but to distract from the main focus of the movement.”

    Her passionate plea also included a call for targeted boycotting and a deeper understanding of the situation. She said, “Boycotting every company on the list isn’t practical. Many influencers, like myself, have stopped supporting various brands. Remember, the list is long, with hundreds of products from big companies. There’s a reason for focusing on specific boycotts.”

    According to Saheefa, a broad, untargeted boycott is “easier said than done” and might be harmful or impossible for “a third-world country with limited resources.” “Don’t boycott all 200 products. Learn why we’re targeting Coke, Starbucks, and McDonald’s. They were the first to publicly fund and support genocides. They fed IDF soldiers while children in the Gaza Strip were brutally killed, raped, and left hungry in the streets. Please, I urge each of you to educate yourselves,” she pleaded.

    The collective voices of these celebrities reflect a growing global demand for Palestinian liberation and an end to Israel’s apartheid regime that continues to claim Palestinian lives.     It is said “All is well that ends well”, a saying that perfectly captures our feelings for the show Tumharay Husan kay Naam. The drama series that had a slow narrative was weaved so meticulously that the ending made it all worth it.


    The coming-of-age story ended beautifully, capturing the essence of true love. Saba Qamar and Imran Abbas portrayed the characters of Salma and Sikandar perfectly; no one else could have done it better.


    The actual crescendo was the point when Salma and Sikander’s children put their parents’ happiness before themselves.     Actor Imran Abbas has taken to his Facebook account to discuss how entertainment talk shows have fallen in quality, after a series of controversies surrounding talk shows. The saga begun when model Ekra Faiz said Hania Amir was an overrated actress who was everywhere on television, and a resurfaced clip showed Sadaf Kanwal making demeaning comments about Mahira Khan’s appearance.

    Now, the ‘Tumharay Hussn Kay Naam’ actor has stated that he refuses to go on talk shows anymore because the conversations are focused on criticising one’s appearance, looks or deciding whether they are religious or not.

    “It’s one of the major reasons for me to refuse to go to these talk shows conducted by those fame-deprived hosts, who are known to no one, doesn’t have any claim to fame, and don’t have any acheivements under their belt, who even talk publicly about celebrities’ personal lives and at times about their religious and personal beliefs too and have the audacity to judge people and their work as well without any personal accomplishments of their own and without knowing these celebrities journey’s..”

    The actor urged talk show hosts to stop focusing on mundane, senseless issues that only seek to profit off other people’s misery, and to focus on important issues one can discuss in society:

    “Don’t you have anything decent to talk, any important issue left in our society to discuss and ponder, can’t you sit for a while for something deep and meaningful which needs our focus or anything which is humorous yet not derogatory?”

    Imran also urged other actors to join him in refusing to attend talk shows so that hosts can learn to remember their responsibility to make moral and ethical shows:

    “I request our fellow actors to discourage them by stop being a part of these ‘wanna be funny/ popular talk shows’…Please have some morals and set a precedent since we all have lots of responsibilities when we come on stage even as guests/ hosts.”
