  • Village in India prays for success of Indian descent Kamala Harris

US vice presidential candidate for the democratic party, Kamala Harris, who is the first US senator of South Asian descent, came from a small south Indian village near the city of Chennai, called Thulasendrapuram. The residents of the village have taken pride in the fact that a person whose family originally hailed from their village will become the second-most powerful person in the world’s richest country, if she wins the elections.

“We are really hoping she wins,” said the head of Thulasendrapuram’s village committee Gurunathan, who is planning to hold a special prayer at the local temple on election day, “the village has received global fame because of her. She is our pride.”

“From Thulasendrapuram to America” declares one of the many banners put up in the village. Kamal Harris 35-year-old California-based niece also tweeted a picture of one of the banners plastered in the village.

Preparations are being made in the local temple to conduct an “abhishekam” – a Hindu ritual – to pray for Harris’ victory.

There is also a different sentiment being expressed by some members of the village. “…I think she is not proud of her Hindu roots, she identifies herself as a Christian,” the temple’s caretaker, SV Ramanan, said, “though she has reconnected with her Indian connection on the campaign trail, she has mostly played up her image as an American.”

  • ‘Modi has decided when India would be at war with Pakistan, China’

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Uttar Pradesh (UP) unit chief Swatantra Dev Singh has claimed that Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has “decided” on a time when India would be at war with Pakistan and China.

A minister in UP Chief Minister (CM) Yogi Adityanath’s cabinet, Swatantra Dev Singh made the remark during an event at the home of BJP’s Sikanderpur lawmaker Sanjay Yadav.

In a video clip of Swatantra Dev Singh’s remarks, the BJP’s UP chief draws parallels between the abrogation of Article 370 in held Kashmir, construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya where the Babri Masjid once stood, and the ongoing India-China military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

“Like the decisions on Ram Mandir and Article 370, PM Narendra Modi has decided when there would be war with Pakistan and China,” news agency PTI quoted Swatantra Dev Singh as saying in a video posted on social media by Yadav.

The BJP leader’s controversial remarks come amid an intense standoff between the Indian and Chinese armies in eastern Ladakh. Both countries have held multiple rounds of diplomatic and military talks to achieve disengagement in the region.

However, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement on Sunday contradicts the remarks made by Swatantra Dev Singh. While reiterating that India is seeking an end to the border tussle with China, Singh had said that New Delhi will not allow anyone to take away “even an inch” of Indian land.

Launching an attack on the BJP-led Centre, Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor tweeted:

“Amazing. So the PM (who will not even name the state that has encroached upon our land) is planning a war against an Unnamed Enemy, over territory he claims has never been taken, on a date that only he knows? So is this what he meant by “minimal government”!?” he said while referring to Swatantra Dev Singh’s remarks.

  • Donald Trump’s Indian fan, who worshipped him, dies ‘upset’ over president’s COVID-19 diagnosis

An Indian man, who earlier made headlines for worshipping Donald Trump, and was upset over the news of the United States (US) president contracting COVID-19, has died of a cardiac arrest.

Bussa Krishna was a fan of the president and said his devotion to Trump began more than four years ago when the leader appeared in his dream. He posted a tearful video on his Facebook page wishing for his idol’s recovery from the virus.

Recently, he went to Toopran, which is his maternal grandmother’s house. Ever since Trump tested positive, Krishna was reported to be suffering from depression and not eating or sleeping properly.

Despite his family members counselling him that there was nothing to worry about the president’s health, he did not change.

“He was not having food or proper sleep,” Krishna’s uncle Ashok said.

He said that Krishna spent about Rs1.4 (14 lacs) to construct the temple for Trump and another 80,000 to see him during his India visit in February.

“His only dream was to meet Trump, but he left the world without fulfilling it,” another villager said.

Though villagers used to make fun of him for building the Trump temple, Krishna never took their comments seriously and worshipped and admired the president as his god.

On several occasions, he had arguments with villagers and made a point that like others pray to Lord Rama, Krishna and Shiva, he offered his prayers to the president of a superpower.

The follower was popular as ‘Trump Krishna’ and always used to carry Trump’s photograph in his bag. He also always wore a Trump T-shirt.

16-year-old girl surrenders after killing father for abusing mother

A 16-year-old girl in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh allegedly beat her father to death because he used to get drunk and abuse her mother.

According to reports, a police official said: “The man was unemployed and lived off the earnings of his eldest son, who works as a mason (a bricklayer). The family was dealing with a difficult situation as the man was an alcoholic and would abuse his family. He was especially violent towards his wife.”

The family was sitting together to discuss the eldest son’s marriage when the father started fighting with the mother again.

Furious and tired of the daily abuse, the 16-year-old picked up a washing bat and beat her 45-year-old father. He began bleeding but the girl picked up a lohangi (a traditional stick with iron rings) and kept hitting him.

After killing him on the spot, she called the police and confessed to the crime. She also told them that she was waiting to be arrested.

Bhopal Police have registered a case and sent the teenage girl to a juvenile shelter, which helps to enforce protection, rehabilitation, and restoration of juveniles (below the age of 18 years) convicted for a crime.

  • Throwback to when press claimed Imran Khan and Rekha were getting married

There was a time when it was speculated that then cricketer Imran Khan and one of the finest actresses of Indian cinema, Rekha, were soon to get married, a 1985 newspaper clipping making the rounds on social media has revealed.

“Pakistan’s ace fast bowler Imran Khan and India’s screen glamour girl Rekha are to be married soon,” read a report in The Star citing an Indian film journal.

It further said, “According to the journal’s report, Imran Khan stayed almost the whole of April in Bombay. During this period, he and Rekha were seen enjoying each other’s company on the sea beach, the residence of Premi Shivar Godraj and at night clubs.”

The journal attributed a statement to Rekha’s mother in which she opined that the man best suited as life partner to her daughter could not be other than Irman Khan.

“She had gone to Delhi and consulted a najoomi [astrologer] if Imran could be an ideal suiter to her daughter. No one knows what the najoomi had said but Rekha’s mother was convinced that Imran could be a welcome addition to her family.”

According to a piece carried by Dawn in 2013, people linked Imran Khan to Bollywood actress Zeenat Aman and Rekha who seemed more eastern for the country’s most eligible bachelor instead of his former wife Jemima Goldsmith.

“After all, it was Rekha who had termed Raj Babbar as ‘side se dekho to bilkul Imran Khan’ in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Jhooti, right?”

Nonetheless, Imran and Jemima tied the knot in 1995 and they stayed together for nine years, during which he fathered two sons with her. The fairytale marriage may have ended but Imran is still on friendly terms with the mother of his children, who constantly supports his views on social media.

After Jemima and his second wife, journalist Reham Khan, now-Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Imran is currently married to Bushra Bibi.

With Indians being brutally trolled by the entire world for sensationalising the rebellion of Sindh police officials with civil war claims, Twitter is flooding with memes depicting the war that not just Indian media but also prominent citizens are claiming is going on in the southeastern province of Pakistan.

Amid the controversy surrounding Sindh police following Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Captain (r) Safdar’s arrest in Karachi, India on Wednesday once again lost it as it claimed that clashes were taking place between the army and the provincial police as a civil war erupted in the port city.

This time, however, it wasn’t just Indian media that made baseless claims, cracking people up on this side of the border…

“10 police officers of Sindh police martyred during their line of duty of saving people of Karachi from atrocities of army [sic],” prominent Indian lawyer Prashant Patel Umrao claimed.

He went on to say that the United States (US) Navy may enter Karachi port soon, drawing strong reactions from Twitterati, and not just those from Pakistan.

While many resorted to reacting strongly to Indian claims, such as deputy director of the Asia Program and senior associate for South Asia at the Wilson Center, Michael Kugelman, who said that Indian disinformation accounts were exploiting Pakistan’s current political crisis, some chose to give their peers a good laugh.

Woman pushed into well by Instagram friend for rejecting marriage proposal

A 22-year-old woman in the Indian state of Bengaluru spent three days in an open 60-foot-deep well without food or water after an Instagram friend of hers allegedly pushed her into the well for rejecting her marriage proposal. Indian media reported that the incident took place in a village near Devanahalli.

According to details, on October 13, a villager heard someone shouting from the well, upon which the villagers called the fire and rescue department. A team of police, fire, and emergency officials reached the spot with a crane and rescued the woman. The woman’s hand was fractured during the fall.

The woman revealed that she came to meet her 22-year-old Instagram friend named Adarsh. The two had become friends on Instagram a month back. Adarsh wanted to meet her personally, so the woman took a bus from her village and arrived in Devanahalli on October 10.

“I reached Devanahalli around 5.30 pm, and he picked me up on his scooter. He told me that he would show me his farmhouse and took me there. He started expressing his desire to marry me. I rejected his proposal, saying I’m already married and have a son. But he didn’t listen and started forcing me to marry him. He threatened to kill me if I rejected his proposal and pushed me into the well. He fled the spot, cursing me that I would die there,” she told police.

The police later arrested her ‘friend’, who said that he was upset because the woman rejected his marriage proposal.

Police said the woman luckily survived the fall because of the bushes in the well. They took her to a nearby hospital for the treatment of the injuries she sustained.

  • [VIDEO] IPL 2020: Umpire ‘changes decision after Dhoni’s angry stare’

The clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw the latter winning by 20 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium as Chennai kept their ‘#10YearChallenge’ of replicating their 2010 campaign alive.

While it was a needed win for CSK, there was a moment in the match that got netizens questioning the umpire and former Indian skipper Mahinder Singh Dhoni. In the 19th over, Shardul Thakur bowled another yorker outside the tramline.

Umpire Paul Reiffel was about to stretch his arms wide, but Dhoni was spotted getting angry and staring at him. The umpire did not give it a wide and now netizens are questioning this decision.

The controversial decision might not have played a big part in the outcome of the match but it does raise questions on how MS Dhoni’s “intimidatory” tactics against the umpire have come out to the fore again in IPL.

The result saw CSK go to the sixth spot in the points table and they will be hoping to sustain their momentum as they bid for the play-off spot. Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, have suffered yet another loss and it puts them in danger of not qualifying for the knockouts as the race for the top four spots intensifies.
