    Karachi’s traffic plan for New Year’s Eve

    The Karachi traffic police has announced a traffic plan for New Year’s Eve.

    According to the route prepared by the traffic police, no main roads will be closed for traffic this year. However, traffic from Sea View McDonald’s to Village Hotel will be one-way, while parking will be not allowed on Sea View, Shah-Ra-e-Faisal, Abdullah Haroon Road and Ziaud Din Ahmed Road. Parking will also be banned on Mai Kolachi Road, Korangi and MT Khan Road.

    The traffic police added that if anyone rides a motorcycle without a silencer, they will be handed over to police. Aerial firing is also banned and people can send video complaints of aerial firing via WhatsApp on 0343 -5142770.

    The police will be appointed in all areas of Karachi from 8 pm today to 3am tomorrow.

    Earlier, it was reported that a ban will be imposed on aerial firing in the city and restaurants and commercial centers can only remain open till 8 pm on New Year’s Eve.

    On December 30, it was reported that Karachi Commissioner Navid Ahmed Shaikh instructed the police to keep Sea View and surrounding areas open for the public on the day with better traffic and security arrangements.

    The directives came amid the current pandemic while checking the security and traffic plan and other arrangements for December 31.

  • Bomb scare creates panic at Karachi airport

    Panic gripped at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport following the detection of an unclaimed suspicious bag beeping on a motorbike in the parking area by the Civil Aviation Authority.

    As per details, around 03:15 pm in the afternoon, CAA viligance and cargo staff informed the security staff about a suspicious cotton pooch hanging from a motorbike, with a beeping sound coming from it.

    A bomb disposal squad (BDS) was immediately called. They reached the site and defused the device.

    The BDS confirmed that the device did not carry any explosive material but it did carry flammable material which was capable of starting a fire.

    The airport police took the motorbike in custody and the area was marked clear.

    The bike owner was identified as Sundeep Kumar who works as a guard at the Royal Airport Services, Malir SSP Irfan Ali Bahadur confirmed.

    According to the owner, he had installed a flashing device at the Chota Gate, Malir and insisted that it was just a flashing device. Police verified the bike owner’s statement by the mechanic who had installed the flash device and later handed over the bike back to Sundeep.

    Highest COVID-19 positivity rates recorded in Karachi, Abbottabad throughout December

    The National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) announced on Monday that the highest COVID-19 occurrence has been recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s city of Abbottabad and the city of lights Karachi for the month of December. 

    The positivity rate is obtained by dividing the number of people who test positive for the coronavirus with the total number of tests conducted in 24 hours.

    As per reports, Abbottabad’s positivity rate on Sunday was 25.5% and Karachi has been reporting positivity rate of above 12% in the last 10 days.

    The NCOC said the national positivity rate, however, has decreased in the past few days. The month’s highest coronavirus ratio was recorded at 9.71% on December 6 while the number stood at 6.13% on Sunday.

    The country has reported 1,974 cases in the past 24 hours while 55 people lost their lives and 1,760 recovered. Pakistan has reported 473,309 cases so far.

  • Four killed, over 18 hospitalised after toxic gas leak in Karachi

    At least four people have died and over a dozen have been hospitalised after a toxic gas leak in Kemari area of Karachi over the past two days.

    According to a hospital spokesperson, at least 22 patients were brought to the hospital in the last two days and all of them were complaining of breathing problems. 18 were discharged after they were given medical attention, while four died during the treatment.

    The spokesperson of Ziauddin Hospital said that the deceased had the same symptoms as the people who were brought to the hospital in February after purported soybean dust in the area had caused many residents to fall ill.

    The incident came under the spotlight after a release of a statement by the hospital that raised alarm over the worsening situation. The government authorities, on the other hand, are still clueless as to what was happening in the area, just like the last time when over 14 people lost their lives to to mysterious gas leak in the same area.

    In February, alleged soybean dust had killed over 14 and affected 300 people.

    A report compiled by the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at Karachi University had found aeroallergen from soybean dust in blood samples collected from the people who died.

    The survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan has revealed that 92% of the respondents think that Karachi is the best place to live expressing that the Sea View was their most likeable feature of the city, while garbage/littering is the most unlikable aspect of the city.

    Over 500 people from across Karachi took part in the poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan that was held from Oct 27 to November 17, 2020.

    8 out of 10 citizens representing 82% of the respondents have shared that they felt safe in their neighbourhood during the day. 3 out of 4 expressed that they feel unsafe in the city due to violent crimes.

  • Man takes shop owner to court for selling poor quality shoes to his wife

    A man on Friday approached a consumer court for seeking action against a shop owner who allegedly sold his wife a pair of poor quality shoes.

    As per reports, the claimant stated that his wife bought a pair of shoes from a shop at Tariq Road worth Rs1,600. One piece of the pair broke into two pieces in a few days. The man also added that the shoes were his wife’s favourite ones.

    He said he contacted the shop owner to tell him about the broken show but he didn’t listen. He requested the court to take action against him. He further demanded that the court charge the shop owner with a heavy fine for selling low-quality shoes.

    After initial arguments, the court admitted his application for hearing and called in witnesses to record their testimonies.

    Karachi’s Burns Road to be converted into a traffic-free food street

    The district authority of South has decided to turn Karachi’s Burns Road famous for its food variety into a food street.

    As per reports, the Deputy Commissioner for the South district has created a team of nine members to supervise the transformation of the spot.

    The buildings constructed in the pre-partition era will be restored for their aesthetics, while furniture and signboards, inside and outside the cafes and restaurants will be designed to enhance the look.

    The established team will present its suggestions and ideas on the cleanliness, sewerage and how to beautify Burns Road.

    The food street will be lit with ornate lights after road repair work is completed with new tiles.

    The management plans to make the food street made traffic-free in the evening and will divert the general traffic and pedestrians passing by.

    COVID-positive employee booked for ‘forcibly kissing’ boss after suspension of pay

    An employee of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, who was suspended over corruption complaints, hugged and kissed Human Resource Director Jamil Farooqui and other senior staffers at the building before telling them that he tested positive for coronavirus.

    Shehzad Anwar, the KMC land assistant director posted in Landhi, was suspended on October 5 and his salary was being docked by the HR department after his failure to report to the HRM director following the suspension.

    Samaa quoted Farooqui saying that Anwar tried to get close to him by entering his office on a false pretext.

    After Anwar revealed that he had tested positive for the deadly virus, there was pandemonium at the secretariat, with people rushing out.

    Farooqui said he would take legal action against the KMC assistant director, Anwar, for his attempt to cause harm to him and other staffers. “I tested positive for COVID four months, but I will however retake the test following my interaction with Anwar,” he added.

    Subsequently, a case was filed against Anwar under sections 34 (common intention), 186 (obstructing a public servant) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the City Court police station. According to the FIR, Anwar, who was a stenographer at the KMC, “[forcibly] hugged and kissed” him on his neck.
