Mahira Khan says lack of royalties leaves junior artists behind

Actor Mahira Khan has said that revenue generated by television channels does not reach junior artists, supporting performers and technicians, raising concerns about the absence of a royalty system in Pakistan’s entertainment industry.

During an interview with her Aag Lagay Basti Main costar Fahad Mustafa, Khan addressed the issue when the host referred to her earlier stance on artist royalties. She said that while lead actors are often able to manage well financially, others working in the industry do not have the same support.

“I think the world over there is a certain amount that goes to artists as royalties,” she said. “I’m not saying we should exactly follow Hollywood, but it is a system that ensures artists don’t go hungry.”

Khan noted that even in established industries, financial difficulties exist, but said a formal structure provides some level of protection.

“Yes there are many artists who are homeless and get bankrupt but that’s mainly because they were unable to save,” she said. “But technically on paper, no artist who gets a certain amount of royalty should face struggles.”

She pointed to the gap between what broadcasters earn and what is received by those working behind the scenes. According to her, television channels benefit from several revenue streams, some of which are not visible to artists.

“I feel if channels earn so much money and from multiple revenue streams, some of which even we are not aware of, artists like us still survive,” she said. “But then we hear stories about certain junior artists, support artists, technicians and crew and I feel that it is unfair and it should not have to be this way.”

Her remarks highlight concerns about workers who are not included in profit-sharing structures despite their role in productions.

Industry bodies exist that address such matters, including the Actors Collective Trust (ACT), which represents actors, and the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), which represents broadcasters. Producers also have representative groups. However, a system for royalties has not been implemented.

Internet divided over Mahira Khan’s Christmas celebration

Pakistani actress Mahira Khan has shared festive moments from her Christmas celebration on Instagram, sparking a mix of reactions online.

Some users questioned the trend of Pakistanis celebrating Christmas; however, supportive comments outweighed criticism, highlighting a largely positive response.

On Friday, the 41-year-old superstar posted a series of photos and videos showing her enjoying the holiday. The photos show Mahira celebrating around a decorated Christmas tree, with a Christmas-themed dinner completing the festive setting.

In her caption, she reflected on life and success: “I don’t know what the secret to success is … but I think the secret sauce to life is gratitude. For the big things … but mostly for tender mercies as my Ama says.” She also recommended the film Jay Kelly, saying it made her feel “so seen.”

The discussion online highlights broader conversations about celebrating minority festivals in Pakistan. After years of limited public observance due to religious extremism, initiatives like the 42-foot Liberty Christmas tree and celebrations in Punjab has created space for inclusive festivities.

Mahira Khan responds to online backlash after Neelofar clip goes viral

During a meet-and-greet event in London, Mahira Khan opened up about the ongoing conversation regarding her role in the highly anticipated romance drama Neelofar, expressing that she feels exhausted by the persistent criticism on her work.

Discussing a scene that has gone viral, in which her character strikes herself while looking into a mirror, she explained that the backlash has affected her significantly. She remarked, “One of my scenes from the film, where I hit myself, became viral. Anything I do seems to go viral, and even when I do nothing, that also becomes viral. So I am tired of it.”

Clips of the mirror scene went viral across social media. The moment depicts Mahira’s character having an emotional breakdown, but audience response indicated that the scene did not resonate as intended by the filmmakers. Some viewers commented that the portrayal failed to effectively capture the character’s internal turmoil and that the emotional transition was unclear.

Some social media users questioned the creative choice of placing a blind character in front of a mirror during a breakdown.

A user also shared a different take, saying, “The way the story line is sowed in with the backdrop of a city and two individuals is exactly how magic can unfold the film was so pure.”

Neelofer has garnered mixed reviews, with some praising the film’s cinematography and ode to Lahore, while others planned the story.

Discussions regarding the viral scene popped up amidst heated debates on the film. People said it struggled to maintain audience interest due to repetitive sequences and slow pacing.

  • Mahira Khan rejects claims of ‘silent rivalry’ with Saba Qamar

Mahira Khan rejects claims of ‘silent rivalry’ with Saba Qamar

Superstar Mahira Khan recently addressed speculation of an alleged “silent rivalry” with thespian Saba Qamar during an appearance on a television show, where she promoted her upcoming film Neelofar alongside fellow A-lister Fawad Khan.

During the show, a fan asked Mahira about persistent rumors surrounding the interactions between the two actresses. The fan inquired, “There have always been media reports of your and Saba Qamar’s unspoken animosity, how true is this?”

Mahira replied, “Not in the slightest. I have been asked this question numerous times, and my response has consistently been that there is absolutely nothing of the sort from my side; it is entirely untrue.”

Mahira elaborated on how such narratives often emerge when two prominent women are publicly discussed.

She stated, “This is a global phenomenon. When people observe two powerful and successful women together, they tend to pit them against one another.” She further noted that the attention often diverts to imagined disputes rather than their work, explaining that the situation “benefits everyone except those women.”

She also praised Saba’s talents, saying, “I’m not trying to be diplomatic; I believe Saba is a fantastic actress.”

She mentioned that while she and Saba have not yet collaborated, she would be open to it. “If we end up working together on a project, it could potentially result in an excellent outcome.”

The public dialogue surrounding the two actresses began in 2019 when Saba appeared on The Munshi Show. When questioned about her relationship with Mahira, Saba commented, “We are not friends.”

The statement sent social media into hyperdrive. Later, Saba clarified that there were no issues between them, asserting, “There’s no problem between us, primarily because we have never interacted or worked together. She is excelling in her own field, and I am doing the same in mine.”

Since that time, Mahira has been asked about the issue repeatedly and has consistently maintained that there is no conflict from her end. Saba’s responses have also remained unchanged, with both actresses stating that they operate independently and that the discussion if a rivalry arises from assumptions rather than any personal experiences.

Superstar Mahira Khan once again showcased her impeccable fashion sense, turning heads at a charity fundraiser held in Houston.

Known for effortlessly blending traditional and contemporary styles, Mahira opted for a graceful ensemble by designer Iqbal Hussain, paired with elegant Gianvito Rossi sandals.

The outfit, a standout piece from Iqbal Hussain’s latest collection, featured a turquoise blue long loose kurta in a vintage cut with a band gala neckline. The top was intricately embellished with handwork, including sequins, zardozi, marrori, and nakshi. Crafted in self-jamawar fabric, the kurta was adorned with delicate paisley booties and shimmering sequin work throughout.

The trousers mirrored the paisley and sequin detailing of the kurta and featured a richly embroidered border with sequins, zardozi, marrori, nakshi, and kaamdani sikka patti. Although the ensemble includes a beautifully embroidered dupatta, Mahira chose to wear only the kurta and shalwar, effortlessly combining desi elegance with modern flair.

The charity lunch was hosted by the Momina & Duraid Foundation and saw the several well-known celebrities in attendance, including Bushra Ansari, Humayun Saeed, Faysal Quraishi and many more. • Best and worst looks from 2025 Hum Awards

Best and worst looks from 2025 Hum Awards

Pakistani television stars not only know how to captivate audiences with their performances but also how to shine on a night of glamour and celebration.

The 10th Hum Awards, held in Houston, was nothing short of magical. Our stars dazzled on the red carpet, turning heads with their fashion choices. While many impressed with their style game, a few looks fell short of expectations.

Here’s a round-up of the best and not-so-best looks from one of Pakistan’s most prestigious award shows.

    Best Dressed Celebrities

    Mawra Hocane

Mawra turned heads in a stunning red gown by Gemmy Maalouf featuring a dramatic draped skirt. Channeling a modern-day Barbie, she styled the look with a delicate silver necklace by Hanif Jewelers. The overall ensemble was radiant and elegant, definitely a “wow” out of ten look.

    Hania Aamir

Always a charmer, Hania Aamir made a strong statement in a velvet blue ensemble by Mihha. The look included a sleeveless short shirt, bell-bottom culottes, and a dupatta elegantly draped around her neck. Her silver earrings from Sherezad Rahimtoola added just the right touch of sparkle. She kept her hair loose, complementing the effortless glam.

    Dur-e-Fishan Saleem

Dur-e-Fishan brought timeless grace to the red carpet in a black chiffon saree from Iqbal Hussain’s 2025 collection. Embellished with beadwork on the sleeves, the look was classic yet chic. Her statement earrings by Kundun.co by Fatima Ashar and nude makeup with dark eyes enhanced her dreamy aura. The white sports car she arrived in made the moment even more cinematic.

    Dananeer Mobeen

Dananeer embraced the “party ho rahi hai” spirit in a silk blue gown by Ahmed Manan. With her hair tied in a sleek high ponytail and a minimalist makeup look, she radiated youthful charm and energy.

    Mahira Khan

A timeless icon, Mahira Khan chose an ivory georgette saree by Iqbal Hussain adorned with intricate silk thread and lurex aari embroidery. The hand-embroidered borders, stonework, and subtle sequin spray exuded elegance. With a vintage-inspired side-parted bun, soft smoky eyes, and nude lips, Mahira embodied classic glam. She accessorised the gorgeous apparel with minimal silver jewelry by Sherezad Rahimtoola and silver bangles for a perfect blend of tradition and modernity.

    Ramsha Khan

Ramsha Khan stepped out in a bold, black suit by Nomi Ansari, featuring sequin and silver bead embroidery. Her wet-hair look and dramatic eye makeup gave a sharp, high-fashion edge to her appearance, standing out with confident flair.

    Underwhelming Fashion Choices

    Mehwish Hayat

Known for her impeccable style, Mehwish Hayat surprised many with a red embroidered three-piece shalwar kameez by Hafsa Imran Khan. While her commitment to elegance and culture is admirable, the outfit lacked the glamour typically expected at such an event. She wore her hair down with a center part and paired the outfit with red beaded earrings.

    Sajal Aly

Sajal made a grand entrance in a blue Ferrari, but the fashion didn’t quite match the drama. Her black starry gown, featuring beadwork and cut dana, failed to make a lasting impression. Given her style history, expectations were much higher.

    Sonya Hussaiyn

Sonya Hussaiyn wore a royal blue Sana Safinaz dress that didn’t resonate well with the crowd. Her silver eye makeup and tightly done bun didn’t complement the outfit, resulting in a less cohesive look.

    Kinza Hashmi

Kinza Hashmi’s golden dress by Omrose Couture was a miss. The shiny, silky frock didn’t flatter her the way her outfits usually do. Her dark red lipstick and golden jewelry clashed with the overly glitzy look, making it appear outdated.

    Men Who Stole the Spotlight

The men weren’t far behind on the glam meter. Celebrities like Bilal Abbas, Shuja Asad, Asim Azhar, Hamza Sohail, Humayun Saeed, and Adnan Siddiqui looked dashing in tailored suits and traditional prince coats.

Bilal Abbas Khan stood out in a maroon velvet suit, bringing richness and depth to the awards show, while Shuja Asad impressed in a classic black prince coat by Faizan Ahmed Khan, both giving major heartthrob vibes.

The 10th Hum Awards was a night to remember, full of fun, dance, glamour, and unforgettable moments. From dazzling gowns to bold fashion statements, Pakistani stars proved once again that their style is as powerful as their on-screen presence. While some looks missed the mark, many truly raised the bar, leaving fans in awe and fashion enthusiasts inspired.
