Two enormous explosions ripped through Beirut’s port on Tuesday, wrecking buildings across the Lebanese capital. The explosions — which were heard in Nicosia, 240 kilometres (150 miles) away in Cyprus — were logged by seismologists, registering as the equivalent of a 3.3-magnitude earthquake. According to the Lebanese Red Cross, more than 100 people have been killed while over 4,000 have been injured.
“Until now over 4,000 people have been injured and over 100 have lost their lives. Our teams are still conducting search and rescue operations in the surrounding areas,” a statement said.
Following the devastating incident, Pakistani celebrities including Mahira Khan, Humayun Saeed, Mehwish Hayat, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Saba Qamar and Asim Azhar extended their prayers to those affected by the tragedy.
Prime Minister Imran Khan also said that he was “deeply pained to hear” of the incident.

Of all the films releasing this Eid, Parey Hut Love was probably the most hyped. Everything about the film – cast, set, costumes, locations – was larger than life and the cast of the film promoted it to death. So much so that even if you weren’t interested in the film, you’d still want to see what it is all about.
Naturally, that raises expectations and that’s when things begin to go down. I entered the cinema excited and left the cinema deflated because the film did not match up to my expectations and what I had been promised.
To begin with, there was no story and half an hour into the film, I had figured out the plot. Parey Hut Love is the story of Sheheryar (Munawar), a commitment-phobic struggling actor who meets Saniya (Maya Ali) at a family wedding. The two spend time together and fall in love. Saniya, who lives in Turkey heads back with the promise that the two will keep in touch. However, Sheheryar’s phone is stolen and Saniya thinks that he has ditched her and is heartbroken. The rest of the film follows the duo as they find their way back to each other despite almost getting hitched to other people.
The entire film was just lots of beautiful wedding scenes put together with many of the scenes inspired by Bollywood movies. You will find references from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Hum Tum and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and even from the Hollywood film Dear Rosie. I personally felt the plot was heavily borrowed from Dear Rosie and Hum Tum.
There was no flow of scenes and some of them, like Mahira’s entry, were so abrupt that it took you a while to put things together and figure out what was going on. It’s like the makers forgot that they had a story to tell.
Parey Hut Love belonged to Sheheryar and Sheheryar only. His character was the only one which was given attention and developed properly while the rest of the movie was rushed. Sheheryar and Saniya’s love story was poorly written. Maya barely had any dialogues and she was a little more than a showpiece.
Zara Noor Abbas and Ahmed Ali Butt were wasted in the film and their roles terribly written. Zara is a talented actor and her comic timing is brilliant which is why I honestly felt upset with the way she was presented. I wish she had more screentime and her character had been more developed because she lit up the screen every time she came on. Also, why wasn’t her styling given the same amount of importance as Maya? While Maya breezed through the film in one gorgeous outfit after another, Zara’s outfits and looks were lazily done. The makeup was also a letdown – the lip colours too light and the eyes heavily done. Maya is a stunning actor and she stole the screen in Teefa in Trouble. In Parey Hut Love not so much.
Zara looks out of place in this coral pink outfit
On the flip, the cinematography, especially the ariel shots, locations, costumes, sets were amazing because of which the film was aesthetically very pleasing. The songs were also beautiful. Kudos to Azaan Sami Khan for delivering one stellar track after another and to Nigah Jee for the brilliant choreography. Morey Saiyaan, Ik Pal and Haye Dil Bechara were a treat to watch and frankly the biggest takeaway from the film.
Munawar has grown as an actor and honed his talent. He has also worked on his physique and all his hard work showed in the film. Maya could have done much better. Ahmed, Zara and Hina Dilapazeer gave some of the best moments from the film with their impeccable comedy.
The surface of Parey Hut Love was polished till it sparkled while little to no attention was paid to the core – the inside of the film was hollow.
Note – This article was updated on August 1, 2020. With no new movies hitting cinemas this year due to the COVID-19 lockdown, TV channels are airing their previous releases. Parey Hut Love was 2019’s highest-grossing film.
Ever since Diriliş: Ertuğrul started airing in Pakistan, it has taken over the country by storm. The Turkish historical series has a cult following in the country and fans have been very excited since the cast expressed their wish to visit Pakistan.Esra Bilgiç who plays Halime Sultan in the series is particularly a favourite and the actor had earlier revealed that she will be endorsing three Pakistani brands.
One of them appears to be mobile company QMobile, who have announced that Esra will be the brand ambassador for their View Max Pro series.
Following their announcement, Yasir Hussain, who has been very critical of the government’s decision to air the drama on PTV, expressed his anger and disappointment over QMobile’s decision, saying: “Apko nahi lagta k Pakistan brand ki brand ambassador bhi Pakistani honi chahiye? Na Indian na Turkish? Pakistan Zindabad (Don’t you think Pakistani brands should have Pakistani brand ambassadors? Neither Turkish nor Indian).
The actor questioned why Pakistani actors like like Mahira Khan , Saba Qamar, Yumna Zaidi, Hira Mani cannot be brand ambassadors.
He added that he is not including his wife Iqra Aziz’s name in the list because she is already a brand ambassador for a mobile phone company.
Aiman Khan and Minal Khan also supported Yasir’s point of view.
Back when things were cordial between India and Pakistan, Pakistani artists had also criticised local brands for featuring Bollywood stars in their campaigns.
Hina Butt’s admiration for Maryam Nawaz is no secret. The Punjab Assembly MPA earlier ruffled a few feathers after she commented that Ertuğrul reminds her of the PML-N VP and now she’s done it yet again.
In a recent interview, when asked who would essay Maryam best if a biopic on her was made – Mehwish Hayat, Mahira Khan, Hareem Farooq or Zara Noor Abbas – Hina said none of them.
“I don’t think any of them. Because she’s tall-heighted. She’s fair. As an actress, I really like Sanam Saeed and Iman Aly. But they have a tan complexion. So none of these. Although Mahira is a good actress, I don’t think she can play a serious role like this,” said Butt.
In the same interview, when she was asked to rank Prime Minister Imran Khan’s performance as a cricketer and prime minister out of ten, the lawmaker responded that as a PM she would give him zero while as a cricketer, she would give him six because he won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1992.
The tragic suicide and death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajputhas prompted a debate on mental health and the importance of being there for your friends and loved ones. Yasir Hussain, in a social media update, has told his friends and colleagues in the industry that he is available for them and is just a phone call away.
“Koi bhi depression ka shikar ho, toh mujhe call karay. Aap ko hasana mera kaam hai (Anyone who is experiencing depression, please call me. Making you laugh is my job then),” said the actor, adding “Love you all”.
Other than Yasir, Mahira Khan, Maya Ali, Osman Khalid Butt and Mawra Hocane also urged their followers to be kind and listen to the silent cries of those around them.
Why have we made it cool to be ‘straight up’? That isn’t called honesty, it’s downright apathy! Be kind and proud. Wear it like a badge. Be kind. Be kind. Be kind. There is much more to people than they show. Be kind ffs.
Why do we realise only when someone is gone forever, why can’t we be kind to them when they need it the most. Please don’t wait for anyone’s call or message. Call or message or just say hi before it gets too late…
It’s so important for all of us to be Kind, to be compassionate, to be polite. We all have a role to play in each other’s life. Let’s all have a big heart for one another. Let’s please be KIND!!!!! ❤️#SushantSinghRajput RIP!
Someone's depressive episode might seem 'dramatic' to you, but that doesn't invalidate what they're going through. There is already such a stigma regarding mental health: we're conditioned to combat this on our own, to dismiss and suppress.
— Osman Khalid Butt 🇵🇸 (@aClockworkObi) June 14, 2020
But as someone who's been personally affected by the apathetic & frankly dismissive attitude towards depression, if someone reaches out to you, 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯.
— Osman Khalid Butt 🇵🇸 (@aClockworkObi) June 14, 2020
The untimely demise of Sushant Singh is yet another reminder for us to be there for our loved ones making sure they know they aren't alone. Mental health is a serious issue and should be dealt with as such. Take care of ppl around you#RipSushantSinghRajput#MentalHealthMatters

The lead cast of the film including Mahira and Fahad as well as the director of the film Nabeel Qureshi and producer Fizza Ali Meerza shared the poster on social media with the caption “Kabhi socha hai note per Quaid-e-Azam ki tasveer kyun hai (Ever thought why there is a picture of Quaid-e-Azam on the [rupee] note?”
Kabhi socha hai note per Quaid-e-Azam ki tasveer kyun hai ?
While the makers of the film did not share further details, Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad is expected to hit theatres on Eid ul Azha but given the current situation, it is unclear if the film will be releasing as per schedule. However, the shoot for the film has wrapped up and it is currently in the post-processing phase. Qureshi, while speaking to various media outlets, had earlier said that the team of the film is working on the film from home and they hope to release it as per schedule.
As to what the film will be about, Qureshi had shared that the film will be a satirical action-comedy – something along the lines of their previous film Actor in Law.
The murder of a black man George Floyd, allegedly by a police officer, in Minneapolis has sparked protests and outrage all over the world. While in the United States, people are taking to the streets to protest, in other parts of the world people are expressing their anger on social media. Celebrities and prominent personalities across the world are also raising their voice on the matter.
The incident has also started a debate on the obsession with fair skin, especially in South Asia and the use of skin lightening products. Celebrities who have endorsed fairness products – like Sajal Aly, Mawra Hocane, Priyanka Chopra, Disha Patani – are being called out for doing so.
Following the debate, journalist Haroon Rashid asked his followers to name “Pakistani/Bollywood celebrities who have never endorsed a skin lightening product.” Several Pakistani female actors, including Mahira Khan, Hareem Farooq, Sanam Saeed, Ayesha Omar and Momina Mustehsan responded to Rashid’s tweet and said that they had never endorsed skin lightening products, despite multiple offers.
Been refusing ever since I was a VJ till now. Never endorsed a skin lightening product. https://t.co/uGB1vPyaGX
Me! 🙋🏻♀️ been refusing offers to endorse various skin whitening products since 12 years. Have a very strong stance against it. https://t.co/UcMJ32L2Do
Same here 🙋🏻♀️ Always turned down all fairness product endorsements. The amount of melanin in your skin has nothing to do with how beautiful you are. If we ALL responsibly refuse whitening endorsements, it might cause a shift in the market. We have the power to change the narrative https://t.co/KSKh1XZ0yB
— Momina Mustehsan (@MominaMustehsan) June 5, 2020
Long before this debate, Yasir Hussain had publicly lauded his wife Iqra Aziz for rejecting an advertisement for a whitening cream. He said that even though a lot of money was being offered, Iqra stood her ground and rejected the offer.
Later when Haroon asked if those, who have in the past endorsed such products and later apologised for doing so, should be used as examples in a bad light, Mahira said they shouldn’t be.
“We are quick to cancel, not to converse,” said Mahira.
No they should not be used as examples in a bad light. We are quick to cancel, not to converse.
The brutal torture and murder of an eight-year-old child maid in Rawalpindi has sent waves of horror across the entire country. While many celebrities have raised their voice for Zohra, Osman Khalid Butt is demanding the government to abolish child labour.
Sharing a list of laws which apply on child labour and explaining their shortcomings, Butt said, “If we want change beyond #JusticeforZohra, we need to raise our collective voice to amend our child labour laws.”
— Osman Khalid Butt 🇵🇸 (@aClockworkObi) June 4, 2020
It is only the Sindh Prohibition of Employment of Children Bill that clearly states that no establishment or factory can employ a child less than 14. In the two links above, you'll notice that domestic labor is not mentioned in the list of prohibited/'hazardous' occupations.
— Osman Khalid Butt 🇵🇸 (@aClockworkObi) June 3, 2020
This is a very informative thread on what measures could be taken beyond adding a 'domestic labor' prohibition clause:https://t.co/ruunagJxGx
— Osman Khalid Butt 🇵🇸 (@aClockworkObi) June 3, 2020
Butt asserted that we cannot let another case just go by and should continue to raise voice until the laws are amended to protect the rights of children. He also encouraged people not to employ children as domestic help and “speak out if members of you family/friends have”.
Now, as to what we can do as individuals: Do not employ children as domestic help. Speak out if members of your family/friends 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦. There is a lot of literature on the negative physical & psychosocial impact of child labor. Use that knowledge to help them understand.
— Osman Khalid Butt 🇵🇸 (@aClockworkObi) June 3, 2020
“Can’t stress enough that until child labor laws are amended and implemented, we won’t see change,” concluded Butt.
𝘈𝘯𝘺 amount you contribute goes towards ensuring our lesser privileged children enjoy the same rights to education we do. Children need to be in schools. Period.
Can't stress enough that until child labor laws are 𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 and 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱, we won't see change.
— Osman Khalid Butt 🇵🇸 (@aClockworkObi) June 3, 2020
When a user commented that “families livelihood depends” on child labour, Butt responded that a better way to help is by sending a child to school.
If you have the money to keep a child as a full-time mulaazim, you have the money to send them to school instead and send the rest to the family/employ an adult from that family. It takes under 1500 per month to educate an underprivileged child.
— Osman Khalid Butt 🇵🇸 (@aClockworkObi) June 4, 2020
Mahira Khan, who had earlier condemned the brutal murder of Zohra, endorsed Butt’s point of view.
Meanwhile, among those who raised their voice for Zohra include Momina Mustehsan, Maya Ali and Ushna Shah.
Zohra Shah, a 7 year old child, was so brutally beaten by 2 adults that the little angel lost her life. Her crime? She set free an expensive bird. #JusticeForZohraShah is important. This isnt just a “case”. Its a murder of humanity! We demand stern action so it is NEVER repeated
— Momina Mustehsan (@MominaMustehsan) June 4, 2020
Totally shattered to hear the heart wrenching news of 8 year old Zohra Shah. Where has the humanity gone? I strongly condemn this brutal act by these so called humans. Speak up or stay silent forever.#JusticeForZohraShah
Eight-year-old child maid Zohra Shah was allegedly beaten to death by her employers for releasing their prized parrots from a cage. According to reports, she opened the cage to feed the birds on Sunday, only for the birds to fly away. This enraged her employers who then beat her unconscious before dumping her at a nearby hospital. She died of her injuries.
According to the first information report (FIR), the victim was alive when she was brought to the hospital. She had injuries on her face, hands, below her rib cage and legs. The FIR stated that she also had wounds on her thighs which suggested that she might have been sexually assaulted. Police have sent samples for forensic examination to confirm if an assault took place and are yet to receive a report.
The couple behind the heinous crime has been arrested.
