In a heartfelt conversation on Aamna Haider Isani’s podcast, she urged anyone who feels depressed to seek professional help.
She explained that it’s easy to talk about mental health on the surface but hard to delve deeper. Recalling the time she was “really, really, really depressed,” she said, “I couldn’t understand people telling me how incredible my life was.”
“That’s not what you say to someone because it’s a disease. It’s a chemical imbalance,” she stated. “Depression and other mental health issues are diseases. They have medicines and treatments for it.”
Khan shared that her prayers, best friends, family, and son were her pillars of strength during her darkest times. “The support system is very important,” she stressed.
She highlighted the need to openly discuss issues like depression, which carry shame. She emphasized the benefits of finding a support group of people with similar experiences. “I’ve had so many people come up to me and say thank you, and ask me, ‘What did you do, who did you go to?’ The amount of people I’ve sent to different therapists and psychiatrists is insane,” she revealed.
Mahira Khan finds inspiration in stars like Bushra Ansari and Atiqa Odho, who continue to thrive and look after themselves. “I think it has to come from love for yourself,” she said. “When you like yourself, you will think about yourself, you will say, ‘Can I take this break? Can I take this girls’ trip?’ Happy markers.”
Khan spoke about her happiness markers, such as music and traveling, which she indulged in more after marrying Salim Karim. “There was no such thing as holiday [but] ever since I’ve known Salim, his friends are regular travellers. They would travel rather than buy a car,” she noted.
She encouraged women to engage in activities that bring them joy, like gardening, cooking, or watching dramas. “I get immense joy from working, it keeps me healthy and happy. Whatever gives you joy, do it,” she firmly stated.
