  • Nawaz would have been PM in 2018 if PML-N had a different strategy: Shehbaz Sharif

Nawaz would have been PM in 2018 if PML-N had a different strategy: Shehbaz Sharif

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif says Nawaz Sharif would have been elected prime minister for a fourth time if the PML-N leaders had made a strategy based on consensus in the pre-2018 election period.

Shehbaz was responding to a question by Saleem Safi on Geo News programme, ‘Jirga’, about whether or not he was offered prime ministership before the 2018 elections on the condition that he would abandon his brother Nawaz Sharif and niece Maryam Nawaz.

When asked why was he failing to convince Nawaz Sharif and Maryam of the need for reconciliation, Shehbaz Sharif said he believed in “natural reconciliation”. Shehbaz said he wanted everyone to set aside their personal egos and join hands to eradicate poverty from the country. He further added that every matter in the party is decided with consultation, and his viewpoint is known to everyone.

The former Punjab chief minister said he was offered the prime ministership twice over the last couple of decades, adding that one of these offers was made by former president Ghulam Ishaq Khan and later, by General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

He said no single individual or a single institution was responsible for a weak democracy in the country, and “everyone is a culprit” [Is hamam me sab nangay hain].

Shehbaz Sharif said that Imran Khan had failed to deliver despite being provided all-out support by the establishment.

Shehbaz Sharif rejected the notion that he was about to resign from the party’s presidency, describing it as “fake news”.

A report in Daily Jang published last week stated that Shehbaz was angry after his strategy for the Azad Kashmir elections was ignored, resulting in the party’s loss. Thus, he threatened to quit party leadership. “When I was finally allowed to speak during the budget session, after four days of chaos [in parliament], I said the budget is a fake one since the people’s pockets are empty. Similarly, just like the budget, this news report is also fake.”

Shehbaz said that PML-N is his home and that Nawaz Sharif, every party leader, worker, and women [leaders] over the past 40 years have played their role in building the party. He also rejected the accusation that he helped his brother flee the country, saying that it was propaganda.

Shehbaz Sharif threatens to quit PML-N presidency

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif has threatened to quit party leadership, reports Daily Jang.

Shehbaz has shown anger after his strategy for the Azad Kashmir elections was ignored, resulting in the party’s loss.

Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz has reportedly stopped his father from stepping down.

“Hamza has also assured Shehbaz of taking up this matter with PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.”

It is also being said that PMLN-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz will remain inactive for at least one year.

When contacted for a comment, senior PML-N leaders, chairperson Raja Zafarul Haq, secretary-general Ahsan Iqbal, spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb, and Ata Tarrar, did not attend phone calls.

In May, senior anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada revealed that Shehbaz Sharif wants Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz to take a backseat from political activities and stay quiet. The focus should only be on the 2023 general elections. If Nawaz agrees to give full control to Shehbaz, then he will take all Opposition parties on board. He will then also hold a dialogue with the establishment. If Nawaz does not agree, Shehbaz will quit politics. He will not take part in any political activities after that.

‘PM Khan’s phone does not have messages of Gujarat massacre like Modi’: Fawad

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry, while speaking on Geo News’ programme ‘Jirga’, said, “Two days prior to the story of Pegasus spyware being published, I received a letter from The Guardian revealing that there was a list of phone numbers that had been hacked. Three numbers previously used by Prime Minister Imran Khan were also in the list.”

Fawad said that the letter further added that he needed to confirm whether the numbers included in the list belonged to PM Khan or not.

Fawad said that a team was being put together by the government, who would do the forensics to verify whether the premier’s phone was hacked or not. Only then will the government be able to tell if the attempt to hack the phone was successful or not.

“It is confirmed that an attempt to hack the phone was made,” said Fawad.

On being asked by Saleem Safi that if the phone was indeed hacked and the Indians did get the data from the premier’s phone, what implications would it have for the country, Fawad replied, ” PM Khan’s phone did not have messages of Gujarat massacre like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His phone does not have any orders of murder in it.”

Fawad condemned how Modi and his government had hacked the phones of Indian journalists, judges, his own government officials, and other world leaders and said that the United Nations must intervene in this regard.

Fawad Chaudhry added that the Foreign Office has taken notice of India’s use of Israeli spyware, Pegasus, to hack Prime Minister Imran Khan’s phone and had already said: “We call on the relevant UN bodies to thoroughly investigate the matter, bring the facts to light, and hold the Indian perpetrators to account.”

When questioned about the meeting between Imran Khan and Narendra Modi before he came into power and whether it was discussed with the then government, Fawad responded that PM Khan’s meeting was public and the media was present. Fawad criticised Nawaz Sharif’s meeting with Afghan National Security Adviser (NSA) Hamdullah Mohib in London and said this was news shared with the Afghan media.

“I won’t call Nawaz Sharif a traitor but it was a very irresponsible act by him,” added Fawad.

Earlier this week, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif was met by Afghan National Security Adviser Hamdullah Mohib and State Minister for Peace Sayed Sadat Naderi.

The National Security Council of Afghanistan (NSCA) gave an update about the meeting on Twitter Saturday, saying that the Afghan state minister for peace and NSA discussed “matters of mutual interest” with the former Pakistan prime minister.

Nawaz Sharif’s meeting faced extreme criticism from the government.

‘Being raised in the lap of Jews…still continues,’ Jemima Khan lashes out at Maryam Nawaz

In a series of comments against the children of leaders, Jemima Khan spoke out against PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz for saying that her children were “being raised in the lap of the Jews”. She said that she left Pakistan 17 years ago, “after a decade of antisemitic attacks by the media and politicians (and weekly death threats and protests outside my house). But still it continues”.

Her comments came after Maryam Nawaz lashed out at PM Khan for mentioning her son. Commenting on Nawaz Sharif’s grandson Junaid Safdar’s pictures of playing a polo match in London, PM Khan said, “This grandson who is playing polo in Britain […] I’ve met so many Kashmiris in London and Manchester, ask them what kind of person can play polo there.”

“You need a lot of money to keep a horse and play polo. So tell us where this dear grandson got this money from. It’s your [the people’s] money!” he told the crowd.

The next day, Maryam addressed his comments about her son in her speech and said, “[Junaid] is now the polo team captain and is increasing Pakistan’s respect [abroad]. [Imran] says ‘that grandson’ is going abroad and playing polo, he doesn’t even spare children,” she jibed. “He says, ‘where did he get the money to play polo’.

“I didn’t want to bring children into it, but the way you’re talking, you’re going to get a befitting reply,” she said.

“He’s Nawaz Sharif’s grandson, not Goldsmith’s. He’s Nawaz Sharif’s grandson, he’s not being raised in the lap of Jews,” added Maryam.

Jemima’s reply to Maryam came after referring to an article on how politicians need to keep children out of politics.

Maryam Nawaz alleges conspiracy to kill Nawaz Sharif when he was jailed

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz has alleged that there was a conspiracy to murder Nawaz Sharif when he was in jail.

“Opponents start to tremble as soon as they hear the name of Nawaz Sharif. He was ousted on the basis of Iqama. His position as a prime Minister was snatched from him,” said the Maryam while addressing a rally in Azad Kashmir.

"There was a conspiracy, a plan to kill Nawaz Sharif while he was still in jail," added Maryam.

“The Cabinet Meeting spends its time planning to stop Nawaz Sharif rather than investing its time for doing the public some good,” said Maryam.

“Nawaz Sharif resides in London and beats [the Opponents through votes] in their house in every election,” added Maryam Nawaz.

A photoshopped picture of Nawaz Sharif, which was allegedly tweeted by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz, has led to a meme fest on social media. The tweet has now been deleted.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan, Dr Shahbaz Gill, shared a screenshot of the deleted tweet that was a combo photo of Maryam and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, reports Dawn.

The picture on the left shows Maryam, who is leading the party’s election campaign in Azad Kashmir, standing at a picturesque spot in Keran, Neelam Valley and the picture on the right shows her father Nawaz — who has been in the UK since November 2019 — standing at the same exact spot. The tweet reads: “Ties with Kashmir are very old”.

‘Do I look like a terrorist to you,’ Nadeem Malik responds to FIA

The Counter-Terrorism Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has summoned SAMAA TV’s senior anchorperson Nadeem Malik and asked him to disclose his sources in the Judge Arshad Malik video leak scandal case.

Nadeem Malik has said that he will not appear. “The notice has been issued by the terrorism wing. Do I look like a terrorist to you?”

The notice demands that Malik reveal his sources. “There is no law across the globe that can force a journalist to quote their sources,” the anchorperson said.

On April 28, Nadeem Malik during his show ‘Nadeem Malik Live’ said that he had a chance to meet with two members of the FIA team that was investigating the video leak scandal against late accountability court judge Arshad Malik.

“It could be perceived from what they [members of the FIA team] told me that there was a video of Judge Arshad Malik. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was banking on Judge Malik granting bail to Nawaz Sharif. He had contacts with the PML-N, so there were assurances,” the anchorperson said.

“The other party, which I would not name, as many people can understand, they got their hands on that 30-year-old video of Judge Malik. It was an objectionable video that was recorded 30 years ago when Judge Malik was posted in Multan. There were other people too and the whole video is there.”

According to the anchorperson, the late judge was called to a place at Constitution Avenue and was told that the video would be made public if a ‘favourable’ verdict was not given in cases against Nawaz Sharif.

The judge gave the verdict and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif was disqualified.

“The PML-N got their hands on the same video and Judge Arshad Malik came to meet Nawaz Sharif and apologised, saying he couldn’t do anything as they had his video,” Nadeem Malik said.

“They [PML-N leaders] told him that they have the same video too, and, while Judge Malik was narrating the events, he was recorded once again. It was recorded by Nasir Sahib who has gone to London.”

The FIA is handling the case through its Counter-Terrorism Wing at its headquarters in Islamabad. It had told Nadeem Malik to appear on June 6, along with documents and evidence to support what he said on his show.

“Please refer to your Nadeem Malik Live Programme on SAMAA NEWS dated 28-04-2021 revealed that you have important information which can be relevant for the agency to further investigate the above mentioned and to link some relevant persons with this case,” the notice says.

Civil society and journalists condemned the notice.

’PPP is neither my priority nor my competition’: Maryam Nawaz

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice-president Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday said that since the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is not part of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) anymore, therefore, it is not her priority.

Speaking to the media outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC), Maryam denied there were rifts in the PDM, saying that all parties in the alliance had the same stance as Nawaz Sharif.

“We all share the same ideology and the parties in the PDM have the same position that Nawaz Sharif has,” she clarified.

Maryam Nawaz said that the PPP is no longer a part of PDM, therefore, it should not be discussed now.

“PPP is neither my priority nor I have any competition with it,” she said.

Maryam added that the benefits of resignations would have been evident only if all the parties in the PDM had resigned.

Maryam went to the IHC for the hearing of an appeal against her conviction in the Avenfield Properties reference.

  • What does PM Khan regret?

    What does PM Khan regret?

Federal Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed on Sunday said that Prime Minister Imran Khan regrets that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was able to escape from the grip of the law by leaving Pakistan for London.

He said that Nawaz deceived the government and went abroad using “fake medical reports” and the prime minister has great sorrow over this.

The government stopped Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif from going abroad and later placed his name on the Exit Control List (ECL).

Sheikh Rasheed said a person whose name was included in the ECL could challenge the decision in 15 days but Shehbaz Sharif did not challenge the Interior Ministry’s decision.

Rasheed went on to say that PM Imran Khan was lucky to have such an “incompetent” and “sluggish” Opposition.

He further added that the entire Jahangir Tareen group will support the upcoming budget.
