  • ICC rates Pindi wicket below average, Babar Azam defends

    The Inter­national Cricket Council (ICC) rated the first Test match between Pakistan and Australia pitch “below average” and penalised it with one demerit point after the match ended in a dull draw earlier this week in Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

    In a report, Ranjan Madugalle, the ICC match referee for the Pak-Aus Test series said, “The pitch did not have a great deal of pace and bounce in it for the seamers nor assisted the spinners. In my view, this does not represent an even contest between bat and ball. Therefore, in keeping with the ICC guidelines, I rate this pitch as below average.”

    In response, The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) claimed that no Pakistani venue has received a demerit point before. However, it accepts ICC’s decision and has given assurance of the quality of pitches in upcoming matches.

    It is pertinent to mention that demerit points remain active for a rolling five-year period. When a venue gets five demerit points, it is suspended from hosting international cricket matches for one year.

    Pakistani skipper Babar Azam has defended the Rawalpindi pitch. The cricketer said that no matter how a pitch is it is important for players to perform on it.

    However, Australian opener David Warner said that he is hopeful of a result-producing wicket in Karachi Test against Pakistan which is going to be played tomorrow (Saturday).

    After the Rawalpindi draw match, Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry criticised PCB for “choosing a dead wicket” in the historic Test Match.

    Pakistan apologises to North Korea Embassy after police-conducted raid

    Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad has officially made an apology to North Korea after Islamabad police conducted a raid on the embassy on Monday evening.

    During a press conference on Thursday, Sheikh Rasheed said that incident happened due to some misunderstanding.

    He said, “We have apologised [to the North Korean mission, the incident had] happened out of misunderstanding.”

    According to Geo, the embassy has issued a letter to the Foreign Office and Inspector General of Police-Islamabad in which it stated that the police entered the embassy premises around 5 pm on Monday from the back door. They also threatened and harassed the staff. Police searched the storeroom at gunpoint when staff tried to stop them.

    The letter read, “The mission staff reminded them that premises are the embassy exercising the inviolable sovereign territory of DPR Korea and asked them to immediately stop this brutal act against the embassy.”

    According to the letter, the police also damaged property.

    Foreign Office spokesperson said in response, “They have also been informed that they cannot perform such a raid next time without having clearance from the Foreign Office.”

    Islamabad police spokesperson also apologised for the violation of the Vienna convention and will question the security personnel who were involved in the incident.

    He said, “We apologise for entering the embassy.” Police raided the North Korean embassy after receiving reports of having a large number of alcohol bottles on their premises.

    Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed on Thursday said National Assembly (NA) Speaker Asad Qaiser has the right to disqualify any Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Members of National Assembly (MNA) who “crossed floor” (to vote against your party) in the lower house and that “no one can challenge that”.

    According to the federal minister, all political parties gave this right to the Speaker in the 18th Amendment in an effort to stop horse-trading.

    “Let them [Opposition] fulfil their desire. Imran Khan is on his way towards winning. The Speaker has the right to disqualify any ruling party MNA who disrespects the votes they got due to IK,” he said.

    Talking to the media, the minister said the no-confidence move would be a “moment of satisfaction” for the premier. He also termed the week from March 23 to 30 as important.

    In a tweet, Rasheed urged PTI supporters to be present at Islamabad’s D-Chowk on the day of the vote to celebrate a “day of thanksgiving” for the PM’s success.

    Speaking on ARY News, Supreme Court lawyer Faisal Hussain gave a detailed analysis on the no-confidence motion and the government’s options.

    After submission of the no-confidence motion against PM Imran Khan, the government has come up with a strategy of not showing up on the D-Day. Asad Umar said that it is the Opposition’s job to show that they have the support of 172 MNAs and therefore government lawmakers would not attend the no-confidence vote.

    Talking to 92 News, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the Speaker will not count the votes of PTI members who vote against the PM.

    Nawab of Junagadh state, Nawab Jahangir Khan, and Dewan of Junagadh Shahibzada Ahmed Ali have said that the Junagadh state is fated to get independence from India.

    They addressed the students of the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) of Rawalpindi Campus on Tuesday, reports The Express Tribune.

    They also warned India that the princely state, Junagadh was and would continue a part of Pakistan.

    They dubbed the slogan of United India as the “biggest fraud”. They also appreciated and thanked Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan for including the state in the political map of Pakistan in 2020.

    They also suggested that the Junagadh issue be included in the educational curriculum to highlight the plight of the state.

    They claimed that the Hindu population of the state is also in favour of acceding with Pakistan.

    They also discussed during the session that India has occupied the land of Junagadh illegally despite the Muslim ruler’s agreement for annexation with Pakistan before partition.

    Both the United Kingdom (UK) and Pakistan administrations have learned that the diplomatic relations at this point of time have cooled off to the extent that the UK government has cancelled two important visits after Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the day Russia started assault of Ukraine and then PM’s blistering speech five days ago in which the prime minister said Western diplomats were treating Pakistan like slaves by pushing for tougher stance on Russia, reports Murtaza Ali Shah for The News.

    Pakistan’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Moeed Yousuf’s official visit to the United Kingdom for a meeting with UK’s National Security Adviser Sir Stephen Lovegrove was cancelled by the UK government to protest against Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Russia, both Pakistani and the UK sources confirmed to The News.

    This week, a high-powered delegation of the UK administration was supposed to visit Pakistan for talks on various issues but that visit has been called off, said the UK government source to The News, who confirmed that the message was conveyed to Pakistan.

    The source shared that tensions are so heightened that the UK government called over UK’s High Commissioner to Pakistan Christian Turner for a briefing in relation to the new situation, including the UK-Pakistan relations. The source said Turner has briefed his government policy makers during the London briefings where the UK’s aid to Pakistan came under discussion too and a new policy in this regard will be announced soon.

    The UK government source shared that PM Imran Khan’s public condemnation of the European nations have caused unease amongst the countries, especially Britain, which has often supported Pakistan at various international forums.

    The Pakistani source shared that Pakistan has decided to follow an independent foreign policy and PM Khan’s visit to Russia and his latest public statements are a reflection of Pakistan’s new approach.     Pak vs Aus: Fawad Chaudhry hits out at PCB for ‘choosing a dead wicket’ in historic Test match

    Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for “choosing a dead wicket” in the historic Test Match between Australia and Pakistan.

    “Test match after 24 years and look at the pitch,” Fawad tweeted. He said that the Pakistani pace attack did not need such dead pitches and hoped that the PCB will “give positive cricket a chance in next matches”.

    Australian leg-spinner and batter Steve Smith described the Rawalpindi wicket as “dead” and “benign”. He said it offered little to the seamers.

    Earlier, The Australian’s chief cricket writer, Peter Lalor, also remarked that the Rawalpindi pitch is “as dry as the local hotels”.

    Team Australia arrived in Pakistan for their first tour since 1998. and will play three Tests, three One Day Internationals (ODIs), and a T20I.

    The first Test match played in Rawalpindi between the two sides ended in a draw. The next Test match will begin in Karachi on Saturday (March 12).

    Today’s highlights: Opposition submits no-confidence while PM remains unfazed

    A total of 86 lawmakers from the Opposition parties signed the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Tuesday in an effort to oust the PM.

    Opposition leaders — Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif, and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman confirmed the submission in a joint press conference.

    The government’s current number of Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) stands at 179 while the Opposition has the support of 162 MNAs but they claim to have 186 members on their side.

    While addressing the conference, Zardari laughed when asked how many Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) assembly members are with him. He sarcastically said, “Naam bhi bata doon?” (Should I reveal the names also?)

    PM Khan remains unfazed

    PM Khan reportedly met with the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) to discuss legal aspects after the Opposition’s submission of a no-confidence motion against him. Not only this, the premier also had a meeting with YouTubers, in which he made several claims. He said that the army stands with the government, it will never support thieves.

    “After this, nothing will happen against this government till 2028. The Opposition will face a humiliating defeat,” he added.

    PM Khan is all set to visit Karachi tomorrow (Wednesday).

    Will Shehbaz Sharif become the new PM?

    Addressing the ‘Awami March’, former President Zardari hinted that Shehbaz Sharif might become the new PM (if the no-confidence motion is successful). He said, “It is time we bring a Shareef admi to replace the prime minister.”

    Another PPP leader, Naveed Qamar, said that it is likely that Shehbaz Sharif will be the next prime minister.

    CM Buzdar resignation matter

    As per reports, Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Usman Buzdar presented his resignation to the PM but he didn’t accept the resignation and reportedly said that Buzdar will always be CM of Punjab. Buzdar also vowed that even if he is no longer CM, he will always stand by Khan.

    Moreover, there are several media reports which suggest that members within PTI aren’t really happy with Buzdar. Aleem Khan and Jahangir Tareen group said that the only way to move forward in Punjab is minus-Buzdar.

    Awami March reaches Islamabad

    PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s Awami March has reached Islamabad. In an exclusive interview with Hamid Mir on Geo News’ programme Capital Talk, Bilawal said that the capital’s police is blocking its party convoy. “Until the whole caravan is allowed to come with me, we will protest,” he said.

    Tareen-Aleem partnership

    Top leaders of the disgruntled Jahangir Khan Tareen (JKT) group, including PTI’s Aleem Khan, are going to London to meet Tareen.

    On Monday, Aleem Khan formally joined Jahangir Tareen’s group. Aleem said the aim is to “save” the party after “loyalists who had been integral in PTI’s 10-year struggle were sidelined without any reason.”

    In response, PM Khan claimed that Tareen would never support “thieves”.

    Pak vs Aus: Imamul Haq, Shafique create Test record against Australia

    Imam-ul-Haq created a Test record and his opening partner Abdullah Shafique hit a maiden hundred as Pakistan’s first home Test against Australia in 24 years ended in a tense draw in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

    Imam-ul-Haq was the Player of the Match for scoring hundred in both the innings. He said that he has been working hard for the last couple of years and he feels good to score centuries in both the innings, especially against a team like Australia.

    Shafique finished on 136 as Pakistan were 252 without loss when the match ended without a result.

    The home team led by 208 runs after dismissing Australia for 459 in the morning session. Pakistan declared 476-4 in their first innings.

    Left-arm spinner Nauman Ali grabbed four wickets on Monday and finished with career-best figures of 6-107 in 38.1 overs — his third five-wicket haul in eight Tests. Shaheen Afridi bowled really well.

    The second Test of the series will begin on Saturday, March 12.

    The Australian cricket team is in Pakistan for its first tour of the country in 24 years.

    Pakistani authorities aren’t taking any risks and have deployed 4,100 security personnel, army snipers and road closures for the players.

    Former CEO of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Wasim Khan called it a delight and a privilege to welcome Australia to Pakistan and termed it a “huge occasion” for not only cricket fans in Pakistan but also around the globe.

    Speaking to Geo News, Wasim Khan said that he “gets very excited about the tour like all other Pakistanis and cricket lovers as it is a huge occasion for the whole nation”.

    He said that this will send out a “huge message” to the world.

    He admitted there had been concerns about touring Pakistan from the players a few months ago, but they had all been put away by Pakistan’s security arrangements.

    “Hockley thanked me for all the hard work that was done for nearly 18 months to finalise the details of the tour,” said Wasim.

    Wasim said that it wasn’t just a single person’s work but a team effort as many people played their part to make this possible. “I have been in regular contact with Cricket Australia’s management and also players like Usman Khwaja,” he added.

    Wasim Khan said that there are many people on both sides that have worked tirelessly over the months to make this tour a reality. “This tour also sends out a strong and positive message to the entire world.” And he is confident that when the Australian team returns home, they will leave with fond memories.

    Last year, England and New Zealand cricketers didn’t play in Pakistan because of security concerns.

    Wasim added that there is no reason left for both England and New Zealand to not tour Pakistan later this year.

    “It feels so great that such positive news is coming out of Pakistan. The statements from Australians are very encouraging, which is a real proud moment for Pakistan.”

    “I was personally very disappointed, in fact, everyone was, as all of us put so much effort to make that possible,” he said.
