‘Why can’t we be romantic’: Asma Abbas wants older women to have different roles

During a recent candid appearance on Ushna Shah’s talk show, veteran actress Asma Abbas shed light on the lack of romantic representation for older women in Pakistani television dramas and questioned the stereotypes surrounding married life in desi culture.

“We’re very chill. Why can’t we have love stories,” she asked rhetorically. “Bushra Aapa got married, Samina Aapa got married… why can’t we be romantic? Have we been reduced to just arranging tea,” she said, referring to veteran actresses Bushra Ansari and Samina Ahmed, both of whom got remarried at a later age in life.

The actress expressed frustration over how television rarely shows mature couples engaging in lighthearted or romantic conversations.

“A husband and wife can have romantic conversations too. It’s not necessary that they only talk about children’s issues. Have you ever seen a husband in any drama say to his wife, ‘Let’s go for a drive’ or ‘Let’s go out for tea’? I don’t like what’s currently being shown,” she said.

Ushna asked what sort of roles she likes more, to which she replied, “I like to play serious roles. Thank God that I was given a chance in one or two shows but I think if I can do comedy, then I can do written comedy. Bushra Aapa’s talent comes from inside, I don’t have that much. I am not like her, I enjoy more serious roles.”

Ushna asked Asma if she had ever found a fellow actor attractive. “Yes, I can say that I might have, but there’s no one specific,” Asma responded honestly. Ushna pressed further, suggesting actor Farhan Ali Agha as an example. Asma smiled and said, “He’s younger than me and looks very decent. I look at him more like a younger brother.”

When Ushna brought up names like Humayun Saeed and Adnan Siddiqui, Asma replied humorously: “They won’t accept it! Behroze Bhai might, but what kind of romance can you create with him? If I ever said something romantic to him, he’d say, ‘You’ll get a slap from me!’” She added, laughing, “But he’s very cute,” of the actor who’s mostly played comedy roles.

On the mention of the debonair Javed Sheikh, Asma was full of praise: “Yes, Javed Bhai is very dashing.”

Asma also spoke about her ongoing show titled Punjabi Kuriyaan (Punjabi Girls), where she plays the lead in a cultural talk-show format called Asma Aapa Ka Verra (Asma Aapa’s Courtyard). She invites guests and mentors two young, spirited girls named Chanko and Manko, who are depicted as relatives learning life skills under her guidance.

“This show is very close to my heart,” she said with visible affection.

  • ‘Mehwish does not look like a college girl’; Khalil on casting Sajal in Main Manto Nahi Hoon

‘Mehwish does not look like a college girl’; Khalil on casting Sajal in Main Manto Nahi Hoon

Controversial Pakistani drama writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar recently commented on why actor Mehwish Hayat was not chosen for the lead female role in the widely discussed drama Main Manto Nahi Hoon.

In an interview with Sheikh Qasim, he stated that Mehwish Hayat does not look like a college student, which was a primary reason for not casting her in the role.

Speaking about the title and theme of the drama, Khalil explained, “The name itself implies that the central character, Manto (played by Humayun Saeed), is not as courageous as the real Manto. Manto was a very brave man who fought against societal disgrace with unmatched courage. I haven’t seen anyone braver than him. His pen was powerful enough to stand against a gun.”

When the host asked about the casting choices, particularly the transition to Sajal Aly, Khalil shared that while Maya Ali’s name was considered early on, they ultimately decided on Sajal. He added, “I hadn’t worked with her before and I felt I owed it to her that we should collaborate. She has done an incredible job, she’s an amazing actress.”

Addressing rumors that Mehwish Hayat was considered for the role, Khalil promptly denied them, clarifying, “Mehwish Hayat doesn’t look like a student, whereas Sajal Aly does. That was the main reason for choosing Sajal over others, including Maya Ali. Sajal is not only a very established actress but also visually fits the role of a student, which was crucial for the character.”

On the controversy surrounding the drama on social media, Khalil acknowledged the criticism but said, “Many have appreciated the drama as well. Those who criticize are entitled to their opinions. If someone has the ability to write, they also have the right to critique and comment.”

Main Manto Nahi Hoon has faced significant backlash online for multiple reasons. The central romance between a teacher and a student has been a particular point of contention. Actor Humayun Saeed, who plays the lead role, addressed the criticism by saying such relationships have occurred in reality. The drama has also been criticised for its bold dialogue and for using Manto’s name, despite having no direct connection to the legendary writer.

However, the show features a star-studded cast and continues to receive widespread viewership and praise from audiences.

‘Garam paani nahi aa raha tha’: Feroze Khan’s exchange with journalist draws mixed reactions

Mixed reactions have poured in on social media over actor Feroze Khan’s exchange with journalist Ambreen Fatima after being called out for showing up late at a press conference.

As per the details, the event was scheduled for 3 PM but started around 5:30 PM because of Feroze’s late arrival. Ambreen, who was among the journalists present, called out the actor for his lack of professionalism and stressed the need to be punctual.

Feroze, however, jokingly responded that he had no warm water at home, which had caused the delay.

Nonetheless, Ambreen dismissed his justification, pointing out that many media representatives had left disappointed after waiting for hours. She also emphasised that the media plays a major role in celebrities’ success, to which someone added that fans do as well, and the journalist agreed.

However, Feroze interrupted, saying that the media had been against him for the past three years, which prompted applause from the audience.

Here’s how social media is reacting to the exchange:

One user wrote, “A “man” couldn’t digest being questioned by a “woman.” Her time is as important as his time. If she can be professional, who is stopping him from doing the same. The audacity.”

Another said, “People like this for real doesn’t deserve the fame kudos to the women for standing up”

A user also pointed at the support of Feroze Khan from the audience, saying, “Why’s everyone hooting on this unprofessional behavior”.

One added, “He does not have the common decency to let the other person even finish saying what she is saying!”

Some of the actor’s supporters, however, joined in his defence, saying, “First of all, he apologized for being late as soon as he arrived and secondly paani nhi aa raha tha yaar ‍♀️”

Another added, “He apologized for being late as soon as he reached there so there was no need to create unnecessary drama by the reporter.”

The press conference was part of Feroze Khan’s promotion for his upcoming boxing match with YouTuber Raheem Pardesi.

  • Fake AI video of Pakistani dramas sparks outrage on social media

Fake AI video of Pakistani dramas sparks outrage on social media

A Twitter post from a fan page of journalist Mansoor Ali Khan has stirred controversy by sharing a fake video showing actors kissing in Pakistani dramas. The video, made using AI technology, includes two misleading clips that have drawn a lot of attention.

The first clip falsely shows actors Bilal Abbas Khan and Durefishan Saleem in a romantic kissing scene. The second clip features fake Hiba Bukhari and Danish Taimoor in a similar moment from the drama Jaan Nisar. However, these scenes are completely fake and do not reflect the original content of the dramas.

Pakistani dramas are known for maintaining cultural values, and such scenes are not part of the industry’s standards. The fan page that shared the video captioned it, “What has happened to Pakistani dramas? Why are they showing vulgarity? Where is PEMRA and the law?”

The post has sparked a heated debate online. While some users criticized the supposed content of the dramas, others pointed out the dangers of AI misuse in spreading misinformation.

The incident highlights the challenges posed by AI-generated content and its potential to harm the reputation of individuals and industries.

The drama Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum, a top trending show in India and Pakistan, was a fan favourite particularly for the chemistry between lead characters Mustafa and Sharjeena.

Fans had even given the couple a cute nickname, Musjeena. However, a video of the drama popped up on social media that raised quite a few eyebrows. The AI-generated video depicted Mustafa and Sharjeena in a kissing scene that never took place.

AI is a powerful tool that offers many benefits by making our work easier, but unfortunately, some people are misusing it, which is causing significant harm.

  • Worst performances in Pakistani dramas 2024

Worst performances in Pakistani dramas 2024

Pakistani dramas are loved not only here but also across the world. In 2024, many top-rated Pakistani shows received a lot of love internationally. However, not all performances hit the mark. Here are five of the worst performances in Pakistani dramas this year:

    Sonya Hussyn in Akhara

Akhara was an innovative Pakistani drama that carved out a niche as a sports thriller. Despite the show’s unique appeal, Sonya Hussyn’s performance was perceived as a weak link. Many viewers felt she struggled to integrate into the narrative, and her character’s styling did not complement the story’s overall tone. While Sonya is known for her versatility, her performance in Akhara fell short, creating a disconnect with the audience.

Amar Khan in Dil e Nadan

Dil e Nadan lacked purpose and direction, and Amar Khan’s performance did not help. Known for her realistic acting in shows like Belapur Ki Dayan, Amar significantly missed the mark. Her melodramatic antics and overly theatrical expressions muddled what should have been a subtle performance. Her attempt to play a young and naive girl was unconvincing, turning her performance into a full-blown disaster.

    1734007867-I3PVY1MINV.webp

    Adnan Jaffar in Ishq Murshid

Ishq Murshid started strong but lost its focus after the lead couple’s wedding. Despite the decline in narrative quality, the cast’s performances were generally impressive, except for Adnan Jaffar’s portrayal of a corrupt politician. His performance felt more like a caricature than a believable character, with a fake mustache making it worse. This exaggerated performance was difficult to watch.

    1734007888-09W36YNHET.webp

    Yashmeera Jan in Ghair

Yashmeera Jan, daughter of iconic actors Shabbir Jan and Fareeda Shabbir, plays the villain Shifa in Ghair. Her performance, however, left viewers baffled. Her expressions were out of sync with the scenes, and her wardrobe seemed out of place. Her heavy eastern formal suits clashed with the casual lawn outfits of other characters, making her role seem even less believable.

    1734007907-O1ZNJOPSB7.webp

    Ushna Shah in Ghair

Ushna Shah, widely acclaimed for her exceptional performances in Pakistani dramas such as Balaa and Alif Allah Aur Insaan, falls surprisingly short in her portrayal of Wafa in Ghair. Her performance lacks the emotional depth and conviction expected from an actress of her caliber. Weak expressions and a noticeable disconnect from the character’s struggles make it difficult for viewers to empathize with Wafa. The lack of effort in embodying the character is evident, leaving Wafa feeling one-dimensional and unconvincing.

  • Nadaan ends on a high note: Intense action and a powerful social message

Nadaan ends on a high note: Intense action and a powerful social message

HUM TV’s miniseries drama serial Nadaan concluded its impactful journey with an emotionally charged and thought provoking final episode.

Directed by Mehreen Jabbar and written by seasoned writer Saji Gul, the series tackled religious exploitation (Peeri – Mureedi), mob violence and intolerance and metal health, corruption in police and politics, drug addiction and trafficking.

The last episode showcased Dr. Tabeer as Ramsha Khan, escaping a life threatening situation.

After being falsely accused and targeted by a mob, she is rescued by the police, ensuring a safe return to her job.

This particular scene not only brought relief to viewers but also highlighted the triumph of justice in the face of chaos.

SHO Haider, portrayed by Ahmed Ali Akbar, emerged as a symbol of integrity, as he was promoted for his unwavering dedication to upholding the law.

What made Nadaan truly stand out was its ability to address multiple issues without overwhelming the audience.

The drama boldly portrayed the harsh realities of politics, corruption in the police force, and the challenges faced by girls in accessing education.

Despite its serious and sensitive themes, Nadaan also offered moments of hope and redemption.

A standout moment was when Tayyab, played by Kashif Hussain, responsible for much of the chaos in Jam Nagar, was saved, rescued from a mob’s anger due to Safiya Subhan’ s calm intervention at the hospital.

The scene powerfully showed how lies and hatred can be countered by rational voices, sending a strong and meaningful message.

The final scenes, where Tayyab faces the mob and the police intervene just in time to save Dr. Tabeer, were among the most powerful moments of the drama.

The performances in Nadaan were nothing short of remarkable.

Ramsha Khan, Ahmed Ali Akbar delivered compelling portrayals of their characters.

The stellar and brilliant performance by both of them brought the story to life.

A special shout out to Bakhtawar Mazhar for her standout role as Safiya Subhan.

Her character’s strength and determination were key to some of the drama’s most impactful moments.

Equally impressive was Kashif Hussain, whose nuanced performance added depth to his role, making each of his appearances memorable.

His character was as powerful as the antagonist, who is always spelling trouble around Jam Nagar Karachi.

Hammad Shoiab also left a mark as Dr Usama, and his character was well defined.

Overall Nadaan was a well-crafted drama by Saji Gul not only reflecting the issues troubling society but also a call for change.

With its strong performance, sharp writing and direction, it has left an indelible mark. Kudos to the entire team of Nadaan for bringing relevant story to life.

Nadaan is a reminder of the power of storytelling to address the most important issues we face, and it has set the bar high for future dramas. Saji Gul deserves credit for bringing this amazing story to life, always comes different and write about the societal issues.

Special credit goes to producer Sultana Siddiqui for selecting this script and to Mehreen Jabbar who brilliant direction created magic brought this project life in such an impactful way.

  • ‘I was genuinely heartbroken’: Madiha Imam opens up about trolling on marriage

‘I was genuinely heartbroken’: Madiha Imam opens up about trolling on marriage

Actress Madiha Imam has opened up about the hurtful trolling she experienced online, revealing how it affected her deeply.

Talking on Faysal Quraishi’s podcast, she discussed how she was trolled on social media.

The host asked, “Whose trolling hurt you on social media?”

Madiha replied, “It was during my wedding, I was heavily trolled, and I was genuinely heartbroken because I am usually not trolled much, as I keep to myself. But after my wedding, there was trolling about my husband being from India, about his religion. People linked it to his religion as if there’s only one religion in that country. I didn’t know that people here thought there was only one religion over there, when in fact, there are even more Muslims there than here.”

The Dil -e- Momin actress recalled how people made fun of her Nikkah ceremony, prompting her to share clarifications.

“When they made fun of my Nikkah, I shared pictures to clarify, and even then, I was humiliated. I realized that I shouldn’t have had to clarify, but I did it anyway because I have people who love me, who sometimes end up fighting with each other online. Out of the 1,200 comments, over 1,100 were negative, which was the first time I had experienced something like that in my life. It was ver.y embarrassing, and I thought, what I have done to deserve this,” Imam added.

She expressed her frustration over the personal attack saying, “Some people went as far as making fun of my facial features and belittling the sacred bond of Nikkah. But certain things are just not right. So, eventually, I decided to ignore it all. I thought, why bother clarifying, I tried very hard, but in the end, I was like, ‘To hell with it, man.’ Now, I just turn off my comments because it’s my personal life. You can’t disrespect any country, ethnicity, caste, or anyone’s appearance.”

The Beyhadh actress also discussed about how people are always watching her appearance closely.

Madiha said, “People would even mock my weight, saying, ‘she’s gained weight, maybe she’s pregnant!’ They’d go on about when I’d have a baby, and then they’d criticize that too. There’s no end to it. My mother would laugh and say, ‘Don’t feel the need to clarify. We know, your father knows, your family knows, and your friends know; let that be enough.’ But sometimes I still feel bad about what people say.”
Madiha Imam and Moji Basar tied the knot on 4 May 2023.
