    The K-Electric (KE) on Thursday announced an hours-long power shutdown in parts of Karachi due to forthcoming “critical maintenance activity” at Malir Grid today (Friday).

    According to the official statement, the power distribution company would be undertaking a critical maintenance activity at Malir Grid on December 29.

    The maintenance work will be undertaken to ensure the stability and reliability of the power supply to consumers residing in these areas, the KE spokesperson said.

    As per the schedule, the power supply will remain temporarily suspended from 9am to 6pm for Malir Grid.

    For further guidance, customers may also reach out to KE’s social media platforms or via call centre 118, the company added.

    Following are areas served by the Malir Grid may experience power shutdown during the maintenance work:

    Chief Traffic Officer Amara Athar has good news for women

    Amara Athar, the first woman chief traffic officer of Lahore, has announced good news for women.

    After taking over the post, she has asserted that the department’s priority will be to get more girls to ride motorcycles and increase the capacity of women drivers.

    Pointing out that traffic jams are a major problem in the city, Athar said that her aim is to improve traffic flow within limited resources.

    Who is Amara Athar?

    Amara Athar was appointed as the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) of Lahore by Punjab government on December 12.

    The BS-19 police officer is the first woman police officer on central traffic control assignment in the provincial capital and the fourth woman police officer posted in Lahore.

    Dawn reports that according to an official, under Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar’s policy, female officers have been prioritised for field assignments to counter the “decades-old tradition of ‘male dominant’ policing in the province”.

    An official claims that while there were a number of male contenders for the top position of the Lahore traffic police, the IGP preferred a woman officer, especially after the outstanding performance of another female officer, Aysha Butt, who was posted as Gujranwala CTO who has reportedly bring about significant reforms in a short period since her appointment.

    Butt has built Pakistan’s first traffic theme park at Gujranwala with a long walking track that has traffic signs on both sides to create public awareness about traffic rules.

    On the occasion of International Volunteer Day, a Factor VII patient, Aniqa, was made an honorary in-charge for a day in Sargodha city.

    Factor VII deficiency is a rare disorder that is born due to lack of protein. Lack of production of factor VII leads to inability to form blood clots that can result in excessive wound bleeding.

    As an aspiring police officer, she was given the opportunity to administer the Police Protection Center for the day.

    While she was on duty, Aniqa gave a lady constable a two-day leave, met DPO Faisal Kamran along with other office matters, and also expressed her desire to become SHO for a day.

    Terrorists attack police station in Dera Ismail Khan

    Suspected terrorists attacked a police station on Monday in Dera Ismail Khan, the third terrorist attack in the district since Friday. The militants attacked the Gul Imam police station in Tank area. 

    One police official was injured as a result of attack.

    Police Constable Waheed Gul was injured in the exchange of firing. He was then urgently shifted to District Headquarters Hospital in Tank.

    With reinforcement personnel,District Police Officer (DPO) Tank Iftikhar Ali Shah reached the spot immediately, and then a search operation was started to wipe out militants.

    On Sunday evening, another policeman was injured in a terrorist attack on a checkpost in the Roori area of the Kulachi tehsil.

    Earlier, At least six people were killed and 20 injured after a blast in Dera Ismail Khan targeting a police van on Friday.

    Women’s police station in Rawalpindi rocked with allegations of theft

    A female constable working at a women’s police station has reportedly accused the station house officer (SHO) of theft and blackmailing staff.

    The spokesperson for the police, on the other hand, has deemed the complaint baseless allegations to dodge accountability.

    The complaint lodged by Lady Constable Anita Naseem states that a woman named Arisha Khalid met SHO Irum Khanam to submit an application. At the time of her visit, she lost her purse.

    CCTV footage shows SHO Irum Khanam taking money from the purse and putting it away under a blue chair.

    According to the report, since SHO Irum Khanam was mindful of the camera, she pressured Anita Naseem to keep hush about the incident and threatened her. It is also, allegedly, not the first time for SHO Khanam to take money from others.

    Apart from violating departmental rules, the complainant said that she has been subjected to psychological suffering.

    An inquiry into the matter is under way with the Headquarters SP leading the investigation. The initial findings of the inquiry did not support the accusations against the SHO.

    Peshawar students protest after schoolmate shot dead by robbers

    On Thursday, students from Edward College, Peshawar, gathered to protest against the murder of their fellow student who was killed in broad daylight on Wednesday.

    The 17-year-old student, Hasan Tariq, was on his way home after school in a rickshaw when two robbers stopped him and asked for his phone. Tariq, however, resisted, so they shot him on the spot.

    Dawn reported that the incident took place in the red zone area which encapsulates the provincial assembly, Peshawar High Court, Corps Commander House, Governor’s House and other government offices.

    The students demonstrated outside Peshawar Press Club, had closed Saddar Road for the time being, while some protested outside the provincial assembly.

    The young protesters held placards, chanted slogans, and raised concerns about the increasing crime rate in Peshawar. They also condemned the police administration and called for justice for their school-mate.

    Tariq’s parents were also present at the demonstration.

    Caretaker Chief Minister Mohammad Azam Khan has taken notice of the incident.

    According to a statement, he ordered suspension of the relevant station house officer and directed the police chief to submit a report into the student’s killing.

    “Those involved in the murder will be arrested and brought to justice,” Khan stated.

    Simultaneously, the caretaker minister for information, Feroze Jamal Shah Kakakhel, visited the Manga Dargai area of Charsadda district, the native village of Hasan Tariq.

    He also visited Edwards College and met with Principal Shujaat Ali Khan and other faculty members.

    Man arrested for harassing female varsity students in Karachi

    A clip of an incident of harassment went viral on September 28, highlighting the issue of rising rate of crimes against women in Karachi.

    In the video, filmed by a student in a van, a man can be seen exposing himself in front of the female students while chasing the van for five minutes near the UBL Sports Complex opposite Lucky One Mall.

    IG Sindh Police Rafat Mukhtar Raja took notice and the case was registered in Joharabad Police Station. It was pledged that the harasser would be made an example of. With the help of CCTV, the police made a raid near Federal B Area’s Block 15 and arrested the man who was identified as Adeel Zafar.

    Police have also recovered a small amount of heroin from him and it is confirmed that another case will be filed against the suspect.

    The total number of charges according to the Pakistan Penal Code are under Sections 294 (obscene acts and songs), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and 509 (insulting modesty or causing sexual harassment).

    A private bank’s cash van carrying Rs 6 crore and 35 lacs was robbed on September 19 in Karachi’s Korangi area.

    The suspect, Zohaib, has not been arrested yet.

    According to investigative authorities, Zohaib was the employee of a private security company, and had been working in Karachi since the past 10 months. He left his job two months ago to get married to his love.

    Officials revealed that after reaching his wedding destination in Okara, Zohaib found out that the girl he was interested in had already gotten married elsewhere.

    In a statement provided by relatives to investigative authorities, it was mentioned that the suspect was distressed due to the failed love affair and became a robber.

    Investigative authorities further revealed that Zohaib returned to Karachi and rejoined the same security company. He robbed a bank’s cash van in September and is still on the run.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and District Police Officer (DPO) of Battagram district, Sonia Shamroz Khan, received ‘Officer of the Year’ award from International Association of Women Police (IAWP) in Auckland, New Zealand.

    SSP Battagram Sonia Shamrose has been awarded for excellence in policing strategies and prevention of violence against women.

    She previously worked as DPO Chitral during which she actively worked on local social issues, including establishment of a complaint cell to prevent forced marriages.

    While speaking to Geo News, SSP Sonia Shamzroz Khan dedicated her award to all the women victims of gender discrimination and diligent women police officers who are working tirelessly to ensure peace and security.

    She added that she has always been mindful of cultural norms and sensitivity attached to certain issues while working. Previously, she highlighted, women in Battagram did not approach the police, but now, there is an increase in crime reports pertaining to their issues.

    Over 500 personnel deployed by Rawalpindi police to provide security for IESCO and WAPDA employees amid protests

    Large-scale protests erupted across Pakistan on Friday as traders’ associations and the general public voiced their frustration over skyrocketing electricity bills and heavy taxes. The demonstrations, which gained momentum in cities like Karachi and Islamabad, highlighted the widespread discontent with the financial burden faced by the population.

    In Karachi, a significant protest gathered steam with the backing of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party. The focal point of the protest was a call for a reduction in the surging electricity prices and the additional taxes added to power bills.

    Rawalpindi saw its own protest against added electricity charges, with citizens chanting slogans against the Islamabad Electric Supply Company. Protesters in various cities also directed their chants against the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) while symbolically burning electricity bills.

    The backdrop of these protests is the recent approval by the federal cabinet to increase the national average tariff. This move led to an increase of up to Rs7.5 per unit in the national uniform electricity tariff starting July 1, 2023. This pushed the total cost of electricity, including extra charges and taxes, beyond Rs55 per unit for certain categories of consumers.

    520 police officers deployed to secure IESCO and WAPDA offices

    The growing protests have also raised concerns about the safety of power company employees, prompting calls for enhanced security measures. In Rawalpindi, over 500 police personnel have been deployed to address potential public unrest.

    Here is a letter from IESCO requesting the police to enhance security at electricity offices:

    Amidst the escalating situation, the IESCO (Islamabad Electric Supply Company) has taken steps to secure their offices and installations. The Superintendent Engineer of Rawalpindi sent a request to the Central Police Officer (CPO) of Rawalpindi for additional security. According to Express Tribune, this step was taken due to agitated consumer groups visiting IESCO offices and staging protests, putting the safety of IESCO employees at risk during work hours.

    Following the request, the Rawalpindi police have taken action by assigning over 500 personnel to enhance security at electricity offices. A police spokesperson has confirmed that 520 officers and personnel are now in charge of keeping IESCO and WAPDA employees safe.

    The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and the police officials are on high alert to ensure everything runs smoothly.
