National leadership vows decisive response as ‘Operation Ghazab lil-Haq’ targets Afghan Taliban

Pakistan’s leadership has issued a unified and stern warning to the Afghan Taliban regime following a night of intense border escalations, confirming that “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq” is currently underway to neutralize threats to national sovereignty.

President Asif Ali Zardari described the response of the armed forces to the Afghan Taliban’s aggression as “comprehensive and decisive,” making it clear that Pakistan will make no compromise on peace and regional integrity.

“Those who consider peace a weakness should be prepared for a strong response, and no enemy will be beyond reach,” the President stated.

He added that the Pakistani nation and armed forces stand united like a “fortified wall” for the defense of the country.

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif affirmed that the nation remains fully prepared to safeguard its security.

In an official statement from the PM’s Office, the Prime Minister noted that under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, the forces are performing their duties with “utmost national dedication.”

The statement emphasized: “The Pakistan Armed Forces are committed to ensuring that the peace and security of the country are never compromised. Our forces possess the full capability to thwart any aggressive designs.”

The PM further stressed that while Pakistan has always promoted peace, any act of aggression will be met with a “decisive response.”

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that the Afghan Taliban made a “serious mistake” and will face “serious consequences.”

He strongly condemned the targeting of civilian populations, noting that the enemy attempted to target innocent civilians under the cover of darkness.

Adding to the provincial response, Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori said that the Afghan Taliban regime should “come to its senses,” warning they could be wiped off the face of the earth.

He noted that the air force and ground forces have destroyed enemy hideouts, stating, “Afghanistan started the war and Pakistan will end it.”

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Faisal Karim Kundi highlighted the international dimension, stating the United States must consider that the weapons it left behind are being used against Pakistan.

Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq condemned the infiltration from Afghanistan, labeling the attacks on Pakistani posts under the cover of darkness as “shameful and cowardly acts.”

Sadiq stated that Afghanistan has become “India’s proxy” and is destabilizing regional peace. “

The diplomatic and political condemnations follow a night of heavy military engagement.

The escalation began around 6:00 PM Thursday with unprovoked firing from Afghanistan across multiple areas, including Chitral, Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram, and Bajaur.

The initial attack resulted in two Pakistani security personnel being martyred and three getting injured.

In response, “Operation Ghazab lil-Hag”, translated as “Righteous Fury” was officially announced.

The Pakistan Air Force launched strikes targeting military installations in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia. Official figures state that 133 Afghan Taliban personnel were killed and more than 200 injured.

The strikes successfully destroyed 27 Afghan posts, two brigade headquarters in Kabul, one corps headquarters and one brigade headquarters in Kandahar, one corps headquarters in Paktia, and multiple ammunition depots and logistics bases.

Operations are continuing, and all armed forces and paramilitary units remain on high alert.

  • RT India deletes fake news post about Shehbaz Sharif’s meeting with Putin

RT India deletes fake news post about Shehbaz Sharif’s meeting with Putin

RT India deleted and later issued a clarification about an X post regarding Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during an international forum in Turkmenistan, after the claims we’re exposed as false.

The controversy began when RT India posted a video claiming to show Prime Minister Sharif waiting for almost forty minutes to see President Putin before joining the Russian leader and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a meeting. The post claimed Sharif remained in the meeting for approximately 10 minutes before leaving.

The tweet was later deleted, with RT India issuing a clarification on X (Formerly twitter) stating:

“We deleted an earlier post about Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif waiting to meet Vladimir Putin at the Peace and Trust Forum in Turkmenistan. The post may have been a misrepresentation of the events.”

The incident occurred on the International Forum dedicated to the International Year of Peace and Trust in Ashgabat, which brought together several global leaders, including Putin, Erdogan, and Sharif.

Reports state that after their delegations exiled the room, Presidents Putin and Erdogan were holding talks in a restricted format.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported that Prime Minister Sharif later joined the meeting, having initially expected a separate discussion with President Putin in another room.

Pakistani media reported that Sharif interacted with both leaders and discussed issues of bilateral and regional importance. During the visit, the prime minister also met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Following the forum, Prime Minister Sharif posted on X about his meeting with President Erdogan, describing him as a “time-tested and trusted friend of Pakistan.” He said the two leaders reaffirmed cooperation in trade, energy, defense, connectivity, and investment, and exchanged views on regional and global developments, including Gaza and Afghanistan.

The RT India post triggered reactions from several Pakistani political figures and commentators on X. Many accounts that are sympathetic to PTI used the now-deleted false news to score political points.

Former accountability adviser Mirza Shahzad Akbar wrote:

“From an orderly PM to an international gate crasher….”

PTI leader Dr Shehbaz Gill posted: “What a shameful and mannerless man, unfortunately representing our great Pakistan. The Pakistani nation deserves better leadership. Shahbaz Sharif has always been socially backward. Being the middle brother among siblings, often ignored by parents, may lead him to such silly acts.”

RT India’s clarification acknowledged that its initial post may not have accurately reflected the sequence of events.

  • PM Shehbaz, other Muslim leaders discuss end to Gaza war in meeting with Trump at UNGA

PM Shehbaz, other Muslim leaders discuss end to Gaza war in meeting with Trump at UNGA

A meeting held between United States (US) President Donald Trump and leaders of Muslim-majority nations, including Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif, on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, focused on the situation in Gaza and the wider Middle East.

Leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Jordan, Turkiye and Indonesia also attended the 50-minute meeting.

The meeting saw Trump call it an honour to meet Islamic leaders, and praised their efforts, saying, “You all have done an excellent job, which is commendable”.

Later, Trump declared the meeting extremely important. Speaking to the media, he said that the war in Gaza could possibly be concluded soon, adding, “We are going to end something that we did not start”.

He also outlined US plans for an Israeli withdrawal and post-war governance in Gaza without Hamas involvement, US media has reported.

Axios reported that the US wants Arab and Muslim countries to agree to send military forces to Gaza to enable Israel’s withdrawal and to secure funding for transition and rebuilding programs.

Israel faces global condemnation and isolation over its genocide in Gaza, where local health authorities say more than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed. Other estimates have placed the number as high as 400,000.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) member Turkiye castigated Israel’s attacks on Gaza and said they amount to genocide. Turkiye has halted all trade with Israel, urged international measures against it, and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Erdogan spoke to reporters after the meeting, saying a joint declaration from the meeting would be published and that he was “pleased” with the outcomes of the meeting, but did not elaborate. None of the other Muslim leaders spoke to the media after the meeting.

Speaking to reporters earlier at the UN, PM Shehbaz commended President Trump and his team for playing a significant role in the ceasefire between Pakistan and India during the May conflict, describing the US president as a strong advocate for peace and stability across the globe.

“President Donald Trump is a man of peace. He, along with his team, played a key role in bringing about the ceasefire between Pakistan and India,” said Sharif.

President, PM reaffirm commitment to sovereignty on Independence Day

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to the country’s sovereignty as the nation celebrated Pakistan’s 78th Independence Anniversary.

In messages of renewed unity and resilience, the leaders paid tribute to the sacrifices of the nation’s founders and martyrs, emphasising that in May this year, confrontation with India had reinforced the sanctity of Pakistan’s freedom and the resolve to safeguard it.

President Zardari said that the nation had recently reaffirmed its strength, resolve and unity in the face of external aggression.

“Our success in Marka-e-Haq and Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos is a landmark moment in our history. It was a demonstration of unshakable national will, professional excellence and united purpose. Faced with unjustified Indian aggression, Pakistan responded with clarity, courage and restraint. The world witnessed a nation that is peace-loving, but fully capable of defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said in a statement.

“This victory has given our people a sense of renewed confidence. It has lifted the morale of the people, restored faith in our institutions and enhanced Pakistan’s stature on the global stage. Today, the world sees Pakistan as a country that seeks peace but does not bow to coercion.”

The president said that the moment was about more than just military success as it was also a reminder of what the nation could achieve when “united, focused and committed to a common goal”.

“Let us now channel this spirit into our economic revival, educational reform, technological advancement, institutional development and environmental resilience. The same discipline, courage and clarity that led to our recent success against India can lead us toward victory in eradicating poverty, creating opportunities for our people, and building a just and inclusive society,” he said.

Expressing solidarity with the people of Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, he stated that their courage and struggle for justice and their right to self-determination remained close to the nation’s hearts. “Pakistan will continue to extend its unwavering diplomatic, moral and political support until their right to self-determination is realised.”

“Let this Independence Day be a turning point in our history. Let us rise beyond our divisions and stand together for a Pakistan that is built on justice, equality, faith, and service to all. May Allah be our guide and supporter. Ameen!” he concluded.

Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz called upon all political forces and citizens to unite in the spirit of 1947 and together build a strong and prosperous Pakistan for generations to come.

“I extend my heartfelt felicitations to the nation on completion of 78 years of independence of Pakistan. I pay tribute to Father of the Nation, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and the Thinker of Pakistan, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, who along with other resolute leaders and workers of the Independence Movement united the nation under one vision, one mission and one goal [sic],” the premier said in a post on X.

“The past 78 years tell a tale of resilience, strong faith and a hope of a bright future when as a nation, we braved several difficult challenges,” he added, linking the country’s endurance to its military success earlier this year.

“Pakistan’s historic victory in Marka-e-Haq during the four-day war imposed by India has not only reinforced the sanctity of our freedom, but has also instilled a renewed sense of ambition and national spirit in the hearts of our people, magnifying the pride and fervour of this Independence Day.”

Praising the armed forces for reviving their past glory, he said that the forces “shattered the false pride of enemy by acting as a Bunyan-um-Marsoos – a solid fortified wall” and paid tribute to martyrs “who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our freedom”.

Calling it “not merely a military conquest, but also the victory of the validation of the Two-Nation Theory”, PM Shehbaz vowed to “stand vigilant to defend and safeguard our national interests including water resources”.

  • FBR launches AI system to streamline Customs, boost tax collection

FBR launches AI system to streamline Customs, boost tax collection

Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched an AI-driven Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS), signalling a move towards automation in customs processes for imports and exports. This system aims to enhance efficiency, minimise manual involvement, and bolster tax revenue collection.

The initiative was showcased during a review meeting led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to officials, the RMS utilises artificial intelligence and automated bots to assess the cost and classification of goods entering and exiting the nation.

Preliminary outcomes from the system’s testing phase indicated substantial improvements. The number of Goods Declarations marked for taxation surged by 83 percent. Clearances through the green channel, which facilitates the rapid movement of low-risk goods, increased by 2.5 times. Overall performance saw an enhancement of over 92 percent, as reported by officials.

The system is being framed as a critical advancement toward automation and data-driven evaluations in customs operations. Officials mentioned that the RMS could alleviate pressure on customs personnel and expedite the clearance process, thereby simplifying operations for businesses.

The meeting also addressed the application of video analytics within the manufacturing sector. Authorities are considering its potential for monitoring production rates and automating tax collection. Initial tests indicated a remarkable 98 percent efficiency rate for this technology.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described these digital changes as a fundamental aspect of the government’s economic strategy. He remarked that the implementation of AI would contribute to a more transparent tax system and diminish opportunities for undue influence. He further instructed officials to maintain the system’s integration across various departments.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, the FBR chairman, and high-ranking government officials were present at the meeting.

In a different briefing, the FBR and the Intelligence Bureau released an update on their efforts against tax evasion and hoarding. The report highlighted that collaborative operations had resulted in the recovery of Rs178 billion.

Of this total, Rs69 billion was sourced from company mergers and unpaid dues from telecom companies. The Intelligence Bureau also conducted 515 raids across various sectors including sugar, beverages, edible oil, animal feed, tobacco, and cement. These actions yielded an additional Rs10.5 billion in tax revenues.

Our desire for peace should not be mistaken as weakness: PM Shehbaz

As Indian continues with its warmongering following the Pahalgam terror attack in held Kashmir, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that Pakistan’s desire for peace should not be mistaken for weakness.

“Pakistan is a peace-loving country, and peace is our preference and desire, but it should not be mistaken for our weakness,” he said while addressing the passing out parade at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) Kakul.

On New Delhi’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), the PM said that any attempt to stop, reduce or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan under the agreement would be responded to with full force and might.

“Nobody should remain under any kind of impression and confusion,” he said.

The premier further said that without verifiable evidence, Pakistan was blamed by the neighbouring country. He said a transparent investigation into such tragedies should be conducted, reiterating Pakistan’s openness to international scrutiny.

PM Shehbaz, while recalling India’s 2019 airstrike and Pakistan’s retaliation, said the country had already proven its military capability through a “measured yet resolute” response.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s support for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, he said, “Founder of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, rightly said that Kashmir is the jugular vein of Pakistan. Let there be no doubt… we shall continue to support the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people.”

The premier also said that Pakistan had always condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and underscored that as the world’s frontline state against terrorism, the country had rendered countless sacrifices.

“We do not and shall not tolerate any kind of terrorism… of any hue and colour… and that has been demonstrated beyond any ray of doubt,” he added.

Maj Gen (r) Zafar Ullah appointed chief of cannabis control authority

Major General (Retd) Zafar Ullah Khan has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority (CCRA).

The Cabinet Secretariat Establishment Division issued a notification dated January 29, which read, “The Prime Minister [Shehbaz Sharif] has been pleased to approve the appointment of Major General (Retd) as Director General Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority (CCRA) under Cabinet Division.”

As per the notification, Zafar Ullah Khan, Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), was appointed under Section 7(1) of the CCRA Act, 2024, which reads, “There shall be a Director General of the authority who shall be appointed by the Prime Minister at such remuneration and on such terms and conditions as may be prescribed by regulations.”

CCRA is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing the cultivation, processing, and sale of cannabis products in Pakistan. The authority is responsible for the issuance of licenses, setting standards, and enforcement of regulations to ensure the industry’s compliance with international conventions and national laws.

The authority was established in March 2024 after an ordinance was officially promulgated by then-President Arif Alvi.

In September 2024, the National Assembly (NA) passed the CCRA Bill 2024 to regulate cannabis cultivation and the sale of its extracts for medicinal use.

According to the text of the bill, cannabis was defined as “resin (charas) that is, the separated resin, whether crude or purified, obtained from the cannabis plant or leaves of the cannabis plant and also includes concentrated preparation and resin known as hashish oil or liquid hashish.”

Cannabis was further defined as “the flowering or fruiting tops of the cannabis plant excluding the seed and leaves when not accompanied by the tops from which the resin has not been extracted, by whatever name they may be designated or known, and include all forms known as bhang, siddhi or ganja.”

Earlier, the federal government had removed DG Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Ahmed Jahangir and reassigned him as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Establishment Division.

Reason behind UAE president’s ‘private visit’ to Pakistan revealed

A day after a viral video showed Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif having a candid chat with United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, netizens are speculating the circumstances surrounding the “sudden and mysterious” visit of the Emirati royal.

On Sunday, PM Shehbaz, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, was spotted meeting the UAE president at the Rahim Yar Khan International Airport.

The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including economic collaboration, regional stability, climate change, and the promotion of mutual interests on the global stage, a statement issued by the PM Office said following a high-level meeting.

During the meeting, the statement added, President Nayhan underscored the UAE government’s keen interest in collaborating with Pakistan in the mining, minerals and agriculture sectors.

“Delighted to meet with my dear brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, today in Rahimyar Khan. Reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to further strengthen Pak-UAE cooperation and elevate our ties to a mutually beneficial strategic partnership. Matters of mutual interest, including investments in Pakistan, were discussed with a resolve to move forward together [sic],” PM Shehbaz said in a post later in the day.

However, with the sudden visit and meeting taking many by surprise, social media users were seen speculating the reason behind the same.

Amid unverified claims, The Current has received exclusive details behind the Emirati royal’s private visit to Pakistan.

According to sources, the UAE president, along with Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, arrived at the Chandna Airstrip in Bahawalpur on Wednesday. The royals departed for their palace in southern Punjab’s Cholistan via two special helicopters.

“The Emirati royals are in Pakistan to engage in falconry and hunting during their one-week stay,” sources said, adding that they often privately visited the country from November to February to hunt Asian Houbara bustards.

    1736149305-ZGMA4KYTKM.jpg

The Houbara bustard is a desert bird similar in size to a chicken. It is an endangered migratory bird that was once common in the Arabian Peninsula. Thousands of these birds migrate from Central Asia to Pakistan in winters.

While hunting the Houbara bustard is illegal in the country due to its declining numbers, the Pakistani government often makes exceptions for Middle Eastern dignitaries, issuing yearly hunting permits.

The government argues that foreign hunters bring investment to underdeveloped areas, which contributes to the development of infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and roads. Locals also get jobs during the hunting season, it maintains.

Details of PM Shehbaz, ex-ISI chief’s gifts to US officials revealed

The United States (US) State Department has published the annual accounting list of 2023 wherein the list of gifts received by President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and US intelligence officials from multiple countries, including Pakistan, has been revealed.

According to the list, Pakistani officials presented four gifts to US federal government members in 2023. Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, on October 20, 2022, gifted President Biden a rug in a velvet case, valued at $525.

Former Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) Director General (DG) Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, on February 23, 2023, gifted a handcrafted table to US Senator Mark R Warner, which was priced at $120. On the same day, the then ISI chief also gifted a handcrafted table worth $152 to US Senator Jack Reed.

Meanwhile, Indian PM Narendra Modi topped the list by giving the most expensive present – a 7.5-carat diamond – costing $20,000 dollars, to First Lady Jill Biden.

India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval gifted US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan two distinct items – a silver Jaguar statue in January 2023 worth $485 and a wooden elephant sculpture worth $638 in July 2023.

The report also revealed that the Indian premier’s diamond was retained for official use in the White House’s East Wing while other gifts to the president and first lady were sent to the archives.

According to the document, Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Oksana Markarova gifted Jill a flower brooch valued at $14,063.

It merits a mention that gift-giving is a major part of foreign relations, which is viewed as a sign of respect and friendship between nations.

As part of tradition, several employees of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) also received lavish gifts including luxury watches, perfume and jewellery. The gifts were priced at a total of over $132,000.

However, nearly all gifts to CIA employees were destroyed under US government’s strict rules about what officials can do with gifts to avoid apparent or actual bribery from foreign governments.

Under law, federal employees are not allowed to accept gifts over a certain value “unless refusal of the gift would cause offence or embarrassment or would otherwise adversely affect the foreign relations of the US”.
