Stay home if Adiala jail doesn’t suit you, but let us complete our five years: Rana Sanaullah

Advisor to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Friday spoke about government demands that might be included in negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Appearing on 365 News political talk show Head On, Rana Sanaullah stated that the incumbent government was of the view that if Imran Khan didn’t want to be imprisoned in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi, then he could come home but let the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) led government will complete the five-year term.

Ex-PM Imran Khan stated on Friday that he was offered home arrest.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the party founder remarked, “The proposal I received for a deal was: Negotiate with us, and we will give your party ‘political space’, but you will be placed under house arrest and moved to Bani Gala.”

“My response was that all other political prisoners must first be released. I would rather stay in jail than accept any deal. I will neither go into house arrest nor to any prison in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” he added.

However, contrary to Imran Khan’s claim, PML-N top brass Rana Sanaullah denied that the government had offered house arrest to Imran Khan, noting, “Being the former premier, courts might grant Imran Khan house arrest.”

On being asked about whether the government will agree to hold elections in the next two to three years as a demand of negotiations with the PTI, the Advisor to PM on Political Affairs clarified, “This time, I’ll say it is a non-negotiable demand.”

When questioned whether the government was concerned about the United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Envoy for Special Missions, Richard Grenell’s consistent posts in favour of Imran Khan, the former Punjab Law minister categorically said, “We [government] should not worry even if the Donald J Trump himself issues such statements.”

Declaring Richard Grenell’s remarks about Imran Khan a stunt, Sanaullah maintained, “Richard Grenell’s statements don’t hold any importance for the government.”

Following the crackdown of Pakistan security forces on PTI demonstrators on November 26 in Islamabad, former US ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell initially posted on his account on X in favour of Imran Khan, writing, “Free Imran Khan!”. However, he did not receive much attention at that time.

Grenell was discussed in Pakistan politics on December 15, when Trump appointed him as his Special Envoy for Global Missions in his administration. His social media posts then were amplified by PTI supporters.

Imran Khan admits govt saved country from bankruptcy

Founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan acknowledged on Thursday that the incumbent federal government led by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has stabilised the country’s economy, which was on the verge of collapse in the past years.

“The government has successfully prevented the economy from going bankrupt,” he said while speaking to journalists at Adiala Jail Rawalpindi after a hearing of the ToshaKhana case.

On being asked whether he was conceding that the government had improved the economy, the former PM responded, “The economy has been stabilised, and it has been rescued from bankruptcy, but it has not seen growth yet.”

The former Premier’s statement comes as the country witnesses improvement in economic indicators, with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) touching an all-time high and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) slashing the interest rate to 13 per cent from a historic high of 23 per cent.

A brokerage report said on Tuesday that Pakistan’s annual consumer price inflation rate is expected to drop to 4.1 per cent in December, the lowest level in more than six years.

“We expect inflation in December to decline to 4.1 per cent YoY [year-on-year], down from last month’s 4.9 per cent. This marks the lowest inflation reading since April 2018, when it stood at 3.96 per cent,” said Arif Habib Limited in a report.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, clarified on Thursday that her brother will not accept house arrest.

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Aleema Khan said that knowing that rumours had been spread that her brother would be shifted to Bani Gala or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Khan made it clear that he will not accept house arrest or be moved from jail.

“I am clarifying that all political prisoners be released, and if they want to keep me in jail, they can, but I will not agree to house arrest,” Aleema Khan quoted her brother as saying.

She also stated that her brother expressed concern over the reported airstrike by Pakistani jets near the Pak-Afghan border and said that the country’s economic development is linked to peace in Afghanistan.
“Such actions in Afghanistan will destroy peace in Pakistan as well as have a direct impact on the country’s economy,” she said while quoting Imran Khan.

When questioned about the first phase of the civil disobedience movement aimed to halt remittances, Aleema said that Khan made it crystal clear that the remittance campaign would only end once the government addresses Khan’s two demands: the release of PTI workers and the formation of a judicial commission comprising three senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, to probe the event of May 9 and November 26.

Prime Minister directs further reduction of electricity prices

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to further reduce power tariffs and expedite the implementation of the action plan for future power generation projects, Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.

Presiding a meeting in Islamabad to evaluate and discuss the country’s future electricity and power plans, the prime minister stressed the need to prioritise low-cost power projects based on local resources.

PM Shehbaz said that low-cost power projects produced environment-friendly and affordable electricity.

He further directed that the current electricity generation capacity should also be shifted to solar energy.

“Globally, electricity is being produced from environmentally friendly, low-cost solar energy,” he noted, adding that Pakistan was fortunate in this regard as the country had vast potential for solar energy.

The prime minister was informed about the progress of ongoing hydropower projects across the country and was also briefed on the progress of phasing out inefficient power plants that consumed more fuel but produced less electricity.

He ordered the immediate closure of such outdated power plants, adding that closing them would not only save valuable foreign exchange but also reduce electricity costs for consumers.

The premier instructed that immediate action be taken against all officials deliberately obstructing reforms in the power sector and that reforms in the electricity transmission system be expedited.

“The power transmission system should be upgraded according to international standards,” the prime minister ordered.

He also directed the swift implementation of a system based on modern technology for the selection and transmission of low-cost electricity.

The prime minister issued instructions to complete all measures for the reform of the power sector within the specified timeline.

The meeting was attended by federal ministers Ahad Cheema, Awais Leghari, Dr Musadik Malik, Minister of State Ali Pervaiz Malik and other senior officials.

Today’s meeting came after the federal government on Tuesday approved settlement agreements with eight independent power producers (IPPs) running on bagasse, aiming to reduce electricity tariffs and save around Rs240 billion for the national exchequer.

The decision was made during a federal cabinet meeting. The approval followed recommendations from the Ministry of Energy’s power division.

The power plants agreeing to revised production costs included DW Unit I, Unit II, RYK Mills, Chiniot Power, Hamza Sugar, Al-Moez Indus¬tries, Thal Indus¬tries and Chinar Industries.

After the agreements’ approval, the Central Power Purchasing Age¬ncy will seek approval from the National Elec¬tric Power Regulatory Authority for tariff adjustments.

The Prime Minister’s Office had said in a press release the agreements were expected to reduce electricity prices for consumers and provide an estimated Rs238bn relief to the exchequer.

Next target is Shehbaz Sharif’s bedroom if Khan allows: Ali Amin Gandapur

Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur addressed lawmakers in the KP Assembly yesterday, claiming, “If Imran Khan allows, we will reach Shehbaz Sharif’s bedroom next time.”

Gandapur has recently come under fire from his party members and supporters for his mysterious role in last week’s PTI rally when he disappeared on October 5 in Islamabad, only to resurface in the KP Assembly a day later.

“However, Imran Khan has ordered us to remain peaceful and follow the law, and we proved that last week in our protest,” said Gandapur told the KP Assembly.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Talal Chaudhry, while speaking on Geo News, stated: “This isn’t a Bani Gala bedroom where anyone can enter and exit. We know how to protect our state institutions, our leaders and most of all our country.”

‘Govt and establishment would be comfortable with Qazi Faez Isa’s extension,’ says Ansar Abbasi

Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has cleared that Justice Mansoor Ali Shah would replace Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa as the country’s apex judge.

Speaking to ARY News, the former Foreign Minister said, “On October 26, Justice Mansoor will become the next chief justice — no doubt.”

Responding to the formation of the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC), Chairman PPP said that the Supreme Court’s workload is so much that it affects the judiciary’s performance.

He added, “We waited almost 50 years for justice in Shaheed [Zulfiqar Ali] Bhutto’s murder case.”

Expecting a constructive role from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) over the twenty-sixth amendments, Bhutto said, “It is difficult for [the government] to discuss constitutional amendments with PTI along with its input.”

On the same day, appearing in the Geo News programme Capital Talk, Bhutto clarified that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) was crafting its amendments draft.

“PPP will prepare its draft regarding the formation of the constitutional court and will share it with Maulana Fazlur Rehman,” he concluded.

PM Shehbaz Sharif credits ‘friendly nations’ for securing IMF deal

Prime Minister (PM) Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has acknowledged the efforts of friendly countries for facilitating Pakistan in securing the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan programme.

Speaking to young parliamentarians of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), he lauded the efforts of China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, the Army Chief and the incumbent government’s economic plan team.

PM Sharif said that he hoped the upcoming IMF programme would be the last.

He clarified that there will be no tolerance for tax evasion and stressed extending tax collection.

Journalist Fakhar Durrani revealed in Talk SHOCK, a YouTube channel, that the IMF demanded two things from the Pakistan government before approving a seven-billion-dollar loan.

He claimed that the first demand was a two billion dollars guarantee, which the government fulfilled by securing it from Standard Chartered Bank; the second demand was also fulfilled by securing a guarantee from Saudi Arabia on the deferred oil payment.

PM Shehbaz hails Moody’s rating upgrade amid cooling inflation

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday expressed his satisfaction with the recent ease in the inflation rate, noting that the government’s ongoing economic reforms are yielding positive results.

In a recent statement, PM Shehbaz highlighted that the recent upgrade in Pakistan’s credit rating by Moody’s was a clear acknowledgment of the country’s improving economic indicators. He said that international institutions are recognising the progress Pakistan is making.

Moody’s Ratings recently upgraded Pakistan’s local and foreign currency issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings from Caa3 to Caa2. This upgrade reflects slightly better macroeconomic conditions, alongside improved government liquidity and external positions, which, although still weak, have shown improvement. According to Moody’s, Pakistan’s default risk has now decreased.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) easing to 11 per cent in July, and he anticipates that it will decline further in August. He reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing economic reforms, including a right-sizing policy, which he is personally overseeing to ensure rapid implementation.

PM Shehbaz expressed confidence that the reforms would soon have a noticeable positive impact on the country’s economy. He reassured the public that the government is fully aware of the challenges faced by the people and is working to address them.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for national unity and a firm stance against terrorism, emphasising the need to recognise and confront the nation’s enemies.

During a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad, he stressed that there is no room for weakness in addressing terrorism.

Sharif expressed the government’s willingness to engage with individuals in Balochistan who respect Pakistan’s constitution and flag, but warned that those who act as enemies while pretending to be allies will face no leniency.

He described recent terrorist attacks as deeply troubling and underscored the government’s resolve to overcome these challenges.

The Prime Minister highlighted that terrorist groups aim to disrupt the country’s progress and sabotage the development of Balochistan. He called for decisive action to eliminate these threats and ensure the security and stability of the nation.

‘Shehbaz Sharif ne 50 lakh ka wada kiya lekin abhi tak milay nahin’: Javelin Thrower Yasir Sultan

National javelin champion Yasir Sultan has complained that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promised him 50 lakh rupees in 2023 after he won a bronze medal at the Asian Athletic Championship, but he has yet to receive the prize.

“Every day, my father asks, and I call, but there’s no response. I am a bronze and silver medalist of Asia,” Yasir said in a heartfelt interview with UrduPoint.

“I am tired of going round and round; I believe I deserve the same reward that Arshad Nadeem received. He has brought fame to the country, and my goal is to achieve the same. Although I am Arshad’s junior, I have not been treated equally. I have offers from Dubai and other countries to compete, but I have not received the necessary support. Respect us; we do not ask for money to run our households,” he expressed his grievances.

He also requested that the government provide the promised prize and necessary facilities.

“My request is to be treated equally and supported. Despite these challenges, I am determined to compete in the next Olympics,” he added.

His father, Muhammad Sultan, also expressed his disappointment, saying, “It’s been over a year, and not a single penny has been given for encouragement. As a driver, I’ve appealed for help, but nothing has been done so far.”

Yasir won a bronze medal in the Asian Athletics Championship in 2023 and the national Javelin championship. He has also won a number of other foreign tournaments.

  • ‘It’s not possible’; Reporting in internet-challenged Pakistan

‘It’s not possible’; Reporting in internet-challenged Pakistan

With the primary shift from newspapers to television channels and now to digital media applications, the dissemination of information has become increasingly competitive for newsrooms, with the latest updates just a click away.

“Delays can be managed with newspapers, but today everything is in your hands—specifically, mobile phones,” says Raees Ansari, Bureau Chief of Geo News in Lahore.

“Every single second is crucial in reporting now; some footage needs to be sent and put on air instantly. But due to poor network conditions and slow WhatsApp, content is not being sent on time, which is affecting our professional activities,” he reveals.

Over the past week, internet users across Pakistan have reported network disruptions, with WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram experiencing slowdowns, hindering online activities. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has denied any connection between these issues and the alleged firewall installation.

Since the ban on X (formerly Twitter) on February 17, 2024, many have turned to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The ongoing disturbances, however, have complicated internet usage, which is crucial for a number of professions.

Sumaira Raja, an investigative reporter, who is mostly found out on the field, complains of encountering issues with not only the internet but also phone signals which often prevents her from conveying news on time.

“I also experience delays with receiving beepers, as head office frequently reports that the number is not available due to poor signals. This situation makes it very difficult to do my job. I’ve tried using a VPN, but it hasn’t worked,” Raja says.

Sports journalist Faizan Lakhani recalls when javelin champion Arshad Nadeem returned to Pakistan on August 17 after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, all the visuals sent through WhatsApp by reporters were delayed, and they struggled to download them unless they used a VPN.

“This situation is very challenging and affects our workflow. When reporters are working on a story or covering an event, they need to stay connected with the desk. We usually rely on voice notes to pass instructions, but since we started encountering this issue, we are struggling with that method too,” he says.

“We have been told that the network disruption is because of the firewall installation. While things are becoming easier around the world, it has been getting harder for us. Everything is happening with the help of technology and the current situation is a major challenge.” says Ansari.

    What’s happening?

A highly placed source in the IT industry identifies that filtering of content delivery networks (CDNs) through Firewall is causing content to be routed via internet backbone rather than CDNs.

“This means that around 4 TBs of internet traffic previously served through CDNs, hosted in Pakistan, is becoming ineffective. When all traffic goes on backbone bypassing CDNs, it’s causing massive slowdown at many western destinations that’s happening now,” he explains.

Recently, Fiverr, an online marketplace for freelance services, warned clients that Pakistani freelancers may experience delays due to internet issues and the use of VPNs to change their locations.

“Brace for impact. God save the internet in Pakistan”, says the IT expert.

    Background

It all started on February 17, 2024, about a week into the new government, when X (formerly Twitter) was banned.

Initially, amid the uproar, the government remained silent on the matter while the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) seemed aloof until the High Courts of Sindh and Islamabad intervened. The PTA eventually admitted that the ban on X was imposed on the orders of the Ministry of Interior based on reports from intelligence agencies.

The government eventually justified the ban by attributing it to national security concerns, citing ‘digital terrorism‘ and online propaganda as among the threats.

Earlier in August, Provincial Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that the government is not against social media but wants to focus on rules and regulations, which, if enforced, could lead to the removal of the ban on X.

The disruption has now extended beyond X, affecting other widely used apps along with the internet.

Ironically, since the February 2024 election, the new government has emphasised the need to grow the tech industry in Pakistan.

In March, Lahore Knowledge Park (a science park) was handed over to the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority with the approval of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, with the goal of establishing Pakistan’s largest IT city.

In June, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Shenzhen— the tech hub in China— in hopes of future collaboration. Ironically, he posted on X (Twitter), expressing how “impressed” he was by the “city’s skyline and development that symbolizes modern-day China.”

Given the lack of proper infrastructure in the country amid burgeoning surveillance, how will Pakistan evolve in the rapidly transforming digital world? It remains to be seen – but likely we won’t be able to download it.
