    Arrest orders issued for PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb

    An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Monday issued arrest orders for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Marriyum Aurangzeb in a hate speech case, directing authorities to produce the former federal minister in court on December 9.

    ATC Judge Abher Gul Khan issued the arrest warrant for the PML-N leader and ordered the concerned station house officer (SHO) to execute the orders of her arrest.

    The non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against the former information minister for not appearing before the court.

    A terrorism case had been registered against Aurangzeb, PML-N stalwart Mian Javed Latif, state-run Pakistan Television’s Managing Director Sohail Khan and others for allegedly trying to incite hatred by using the religion card against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

    In the previous hearing, the ATC judge canceled the non-bailable arrest warrant against Latif after he appeared before the court.
    On November 25, Advocate Farhad Ali Shah representing Javed Latif and Marriyum Aurangzeb appeared before the court.

    During the hearing, Judge Khan inquired about the whereabouts of the PML-N leaders and was informed that Latif had appeared while Aurangzeb had not.

    Consequently, the judge issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for the former information minister and directed all suspects named in the case to appear before the court on December 9.

    The case, registered on September 19, 2022, implicated both Aurangzeb and senior PML-N leader Javed Latif for allegedly “using religion to instill and spread hatred” against Imran Khan, the chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and former prime minister.

    According to the FIR, the complainant had said Latif accused the PTI chief of “attacking the basic principles of Islam” by “supporting” the Ahmadiyya community during his tenure.

    “When Imran made the Naya Pakistan, units of Qadianis became active in Karachi […] Did Imran not give interviews to the foreign media in which he said that Qadianis will be given religious freedom,” Latif had said.

    The FIR had said Latif made the controversial remarks at the behest of the party leadership as well as Aurangzeb in order to spread religious hatred against Imran.

    The complainant had said he watched another presser by Latif a day later wherein he insisted that he stood by his earlier statement.
    The complainant said, “The world knows Imran Khan for his welfare work. He is a true Muslim, a Prophet (PBUH) lover and a patriotic Pakistani.

    “He (Imran) made Quranic teachings in schools compulsory and also constituted Rehmatullil Alameen Authority. He also made it clear before the world through his speech at the United Nations that we will not tolerate blasphemy at any cost and raised his voice against Islamophobia which is matchless.

    “In his news conference, Latif declared Imran a non-Muslim and deliberately used words to incite his followers to create a law and order situation.”

    The FIR added that the PTI chief’s followers and supporters were enraged by the derogatory remarks of the PML-N leader.
    “Latif made the controversial remarks at the behest of his party leadership as well as Marriyum in order to spread religious hatred against Imran.”

    Complainant Rehman said that he had watched another news conference a day later in which Latif said that he stood by his earlier statement.

    He demanded action be taken against the PML-N leaders and others nominated in the complaint under the law.

    An anti-terrorism court in Lahore issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Marriyum Aurangzeb, former Information Minister and a prominent leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), on Saturday.

    The warrants were issued after Aurangzeb’s repeated absence from hearings of a terrorism case filed against her last year.

    Senators propose discontinuation of Rs5,000 currency note to fight corruption

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senators are advocating for the discontinuation of the Rs5,000 currency note as a strategic move to combat corruption and inflation.

    On Monday, Senator Mohsin Aziz presented a resolution in the Upper House of Parliament urging the prohibition of the highest-denomination currency.

    According to Senator Aziz, the Rs5,000 note is frequently associated with corruption, terrorism, and smuggling.

    Providing details, Senator Aziz revealed that Rs5,000 currency notes totaling Rs3.5 trillion have been issued to date.

    Notably, he emphasised that Rs2 trillion worth of Rs5,000 notes are not currently in circulation but are securely stored in “safe deposit,” which he alleges is linked to money laundering, tax evasion, and smuggling.

    Senator Aziz called for a specific timeframe during which individuals should surrender the highest denomination notes.

    Supporting this initiative, another PTI Senator, Waleed Iqbal, echoed Senator Aziz’s call to discontinue the Rs5,000 currency note.
    He suggested that promoting digital payments would be instrumental in reducing reliance on physical currency.

    Responding to these claims, Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi stated that Rs5,000 currency notes totaling 905 million have been issued thus far, with Rs4.5 trillion currently in circulation.

    Solangi attributed the autonomy granted to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) by the previous government as a contributing factor to the situation. He asserted that the SBP operates within the confines of its laws.

    This isn’t the first time that officials have targeted the highest denomination note for its alleged role in fostering corruption.

    In September of this year, former Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chief Shabbar Zaidi emphasised the importance of discontinuing Rs5,000 notes and imposing restrictions on the physical movement of dollars as crucial steps in curbing the cash economy in the country.

    Security forces kill high-value terrorist commander in Peshawar

    The military’s media wing has stated on Thursday that four terrorists, including a known militant commander, were killed by security forces in an intelligence-based operation in Peshawar.

    According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation was conducted due to the presence of militants in Badaber area of Peshawar District.

    During the operation, the Pakistani troops “effectively engaged” the miscreants which led to the killing of the four terrorists including a “high-value terrorist” Samiullah alias Shenay.

    As per the statement, militants Salman alias “Ahmed”, Imran alias “Muhammad” and Hazrat Umar alias “Khalid” were wanted by law enforcement agencies.

    “Weapons, ammunition, and explosives were also recovered from the killed terrorists, who remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities, including extortion and target killings in the area,” said the ISPR.

    Earlier, on Wednesday, security forces killed seven terrorists in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

    Security forces kill seven terrorists in Tank Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

    On Wednesday, the military’s public relations branch announced that seven terrorists were killed by security forces in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) conducted in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.


    The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that on the night between November 14-15, security forces conducted an IBO in the Kiri Machan Khel area of the district on the reported presence of terrorists.


    “During conduct of the operation, intense fire exchange took place between own troops and terrorists, as a result of which seven terrorists were sent to hell,” it added.
    ISPR stated that weapons and ammunition were seized from the eliminated militants.
    As per the ISPR, the militants have been consistently participating in various terrorist activities, notably the recent incidents of targeting and killing police in Tank and its neighboring regions.
    “Locals of the area appreciated the operation and extended their full support to the security forces in elimination of menace of terrorism,” the statement added.

    Six labourers in Turbat killed in terrorist attack

    Six labourers, natives of Shujaabad, 50 kilometres away from Multan-were killed in their sleep in Turbat, Balochistan in a terrorist attack.

    The victims were all from the same family, including two brothers. They have been identified as Rizwan, Shehbaz, Waseem, Shafiq Ahmed, Mohammad Naeem and Sikander.

    The two survivors of the attack are Ghulam Mustafa and Tauheed.

    Earlier today, their bodies were sent to Multan via Quetta by the Balochistan Government. Caretaker Chief Minister Ali Mardan Domki was present at the Khalid Military Airbase to send off the dead bodies via helicopter, brought to Quetta from Turbat last night. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and stated that, “Everyone in Balochistan is saddened by the killing of innocent workers”.

    The poor labourers were shot by unknown gunmen while they were asleep in an under-construction house, said the police. An investigation has been initiated.

    PM Kakar also condemned the “heinous act” and reasserted the Government’s resolve against terrorism.

    The letter described the war as “terrorism. This is evil. There is no justification or rationalization for Hamas’ actions.”

    The letter ended by urging on other members of the entertainment industry “to speak out forcefully against Hamas and do whatever is in their power to urge the terrorist organization to return the innocent hostages to their families.”

    ‘Stranger Things’ actor Noah Schnapp released a statement that riled up social media.

    Kim Kardashian shared a statement on her Instagram account expressing her support for Israel.

    Harry Potter writer J.K Rowling shared a video clip of journalists claiming the Hamas had beheaded 40 babies from Israel with the caption: “Now let the snivelling apologists for rape, murder and torture explain how this, too, was justified.”

    Since then, the news has since then been debunked by journalists, as well as the IDF who said no such confirmation was given by them. However, Rowling has not taken down her post.

    Jamie Lee Curtis shared and then deleted a picture of children looking up at the sky in terror, along with the Israeli flag in the caption. This picture is actually from war-torn buildings in Gaza.

    Justin Bieber shared a picture of war-torn Gaza with the caption ‘Pray for Israel’ on his Instagram stories, and twitter users criticised him for spreading misinformation.

    100 killed in drone strike at Syrian military academy passing-out ceremony

    100 people were killed and 240 injured in a drone attack on a military academy in the Syrian city of Homs on Thursday.

    According to Arab media, the drone attack was carried out during the passing-out parade ceremony at the military academy.

    Among the killed and wounded in the attack are military officers, personnel and Syrian civilians.

    The Syrian defense minister left the ceremony shortly before the attack.

    No militant group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

    Pakistan’s security forces lost 386 personnel in 2023: report

    A recent Security Report released by the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) reveals that Pakistan’s security forces lost at least 386 personnel, including 137 army soldiers, in the first nine months of the ongoing year, marking an eight-year high as the country continues to battle militant violence.

    The Islamabad-based think tank’s report states, “Over the past five years, there has been a consistent and alarming surge in violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan provinces. Equally greater concern is the collective percentage of violence-related fatalities recorded in these two provinces which indicates a disturbing upward trend over the last five years; together, they suffered 72% of all fatalities in 2019, and this unsetting figure surged to a staggering 92% in the first 9 months of 2023.”

    There has been a trend of brutal attacks against religious congregations in the country, with more than 60 people losing their lives in two separate bombing incidents at a mosque and a gathering to mark the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birth anniversary on Friday.

    “Pakistan’s security forces lost at least 386 personnel, 36 percent of all fatalities – including 137 army and 208 police personnel – in the first 9 months of 2023, marking an eight-year high as the country continues to battle proxy terrorism, largely in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan,” the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) said in its report released on Saturday.

    “With 1087 violence-related fatalities recorded so far during the year, the outlaws suffered 368 (34 percent), followed by civilians with 333 (31 percent) fatalities,” it added.

    The CRSS maintained there had been a consistent and alarming increase in violence in the two Pakistani western provinces over the past five years.

    Experts attribute the recent increase in militant violence and security forces casualties in Pakistan to the change of government in neighboring Afghanistan, saying it emboldened militant groups in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and fueled separatist violence in Balochistan.

    The Khorasan Diary exclusive: Gen-Z and tech-savy militants

    The Khorasan Diary (TKD) is a joint collaboration of journalists, researchers, and academics from across the world providing consultancy-based services for risk mitigation, security analysis, research papers, and access to original sources of information in the region of Khorasan.

    It also has a digital media platform covering areas inaccessible for mainstream media and highlighting grass root developments, particularly in conflict zones.

    In their latest investigative story, TKD has uncovered the case of a young Pakistani boy who gets entangled in militant circles through social media.

    In April 2023, the Islamic State of Khorasan (ISIS-K), a militant group active in South Asia and Central Asia, released a video featuring Serena Hotel and Police Facilitation Centre in Islamabad. The video had a threatening message — “We are coming,”. This alerted the security agencies.

    The Khorasan Diary (TKD) was given access to information in regards to the case. The pieces of information led to the discovery of a unit of ‘freelancers’ from Islamabad’s most reputable educational institutions. Apart from providing information to ISKP, the students operated on behalf of the group.

    Among these freelancers was 19-year-old Hamza*. His story began with a meme. During the COVID-19 pandemic his classes shifted online and he resorted to the internet to kill time.

    “I was always fascinated with digital media and played around with editing tools,” he told The Khorasan Diary.

    It was during this time that Hamza came across an Instagram account named ‘Jihadiaspect’* with more than 30,000 followers, sharing memes and videos related to the Islamic State Central. The content had high-definition footage, cinematic style editing, and Western music in the background appealing to the youth.

    He watched several of their videos till he discovered that the account had been using the same editing tool as he did: Capcut.

    After conversing with the user(s) through comments under their posts, Hamza made his way into the direct messages and inquired further about the editing software.

    Hamza was then added to a private Instagram group consisting of numerous teenagers and from there, he was connected with several other pages and individuals across the globe, affiliated with different sects and jihadist groups.

    Eventually, Hamza’s religious beliefs transformed as well.

    By June 2022, Hamza was introduced to a new group on Telegram named “Formula 1” managed by Islamic State of Khorasan (ISK).

    According to Hamza, his recruiter persuaded him on the basis of his Pashtun heritage, emphasising the internal conflicts within the community and advocating for the establishment of a caliphate as the ultimate solution to their issues. During this period, Hamza received several videos on Taliban’s killings of innocent Salafis.

    For his first assignment, Hamza made a video showcasing an attack involving a suicide bomber at a loya jirga in Afghanistan in June 2022, where a motorcyclist strategically drove his explosive-laden vehicle into a Taliban checkpoint.

    Hamza was praised for his work and he felt a sense of pride when it was posted.

    “It was finally happening. I had achieved something. My entire life I was scrutinized for things I never did. My father used to beat me and keep me in isolation. My mother was beaten before me multiple times and we suffered at the hands of our relatives who jostled during yearlong court briefings on how I was involved in my own father’s death. Close relatives, for months, dragged us through police stations and courts following my father’s mysterious killing to force us to surrender our family property to them as I was the only male left in my family. It was finally my time to prove to the world that I was right,” said Hamza.

    Hamza was also encouraged to write for their publication.

    He wrote for “Voice of Khorasan” but made a critical error by sourcing all the content from Wikipedia. His work was deemed plagiarized because the organization exclusively expected original content. Consequently, his article remained unpublished.

    This left Hamza disappointed and in despair.

    In February 2023, Hamza received a task to create an impactful video concerning Pakistan and to reestablish their influence in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

    Failing to meet the deadline, he received a message stating he will never be contacted again

    It was then that Hamza shot a video at Police Facilitation Center and Serena Hotel and recorded a 14-minute clip.

    It was released on various ISKP channels, jolting Islamabad’s law enforcement community and resulting in Hamza’s eventual arrest.

    Militancy, Technology, and Gen-Z

    Khorasan Diary deduced a new trend through multiple interviews with detained militants from various militant outfits in the region. The younger generation of Jihadis is apparently less influenced by ideology and more persuaded by aspects of identity crisis, broken families, and lack of opportunities.

    Emerging organizations like ISKP no longer recruit through religious seminaries. There was a time when several students from Pakistan’s private school networks joined religious or nationalist militant outfits due to a lack of proper checks from teachers and parents.

    “There was literally no one to stop me from what I was up to. For me, it was some kind of an adolescent adventure initially. My father was stuck in his own court cases and family issues. Mother was a traditional housewife who for years was facing my father’s abuses, both physical and verbal. My teachers and friends at school were aware but instead of stopping me, they were getting fascinated with what I was producing,” Hamza tells Khorasan Diary.

    Khorasan Diary also notes that online workers are difficult to track as users are cautious and usually private, and communicate on private encrypted platforms. Generally, the typical online recruiting process culminates in assigning new ISKP recruits to manage online propaganda before entrusting them with training, migration, and attack planning.
