  • Malala is now on TikTok

    Who would have thought but the world’s youngest Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has joined TikTok.

    Malala has joined the popular video-sharing app to raise funds for her charity organisation. In her first video, Malala urged people to support Malala fund, an international, non-profit organisation that advocates for girls’ education.

    “Some of you might already know me, you might have heard my UN speech or might have read my book I am Malala, while some of you might not know me, so I’ll briefly introduce myself,” said Malala. “I am a recent graduate from Oxford University. I like shoes, comedy and reading books.”

    “I have also done campaigning and advocacy for 12 years for education and safe quality of education for all girls around the world,” she added.

    “On Giving Tuesday when you might be deciding to support different causes, I ask you to support Malala Fund and help us ensure that all girls can go to school,” she appealed.

    “In return I will be answering some of the questions you send today,” she said.

    Malala’s first video received thousands of likes and hundreds of comments.

  • Security guard accidentally shoots himself while recording TikTok video

    A security guard accidentally shot himself while recording a TikTok video in Karachi.

    According to reports, the incident happened in the city’s Gulshan-e-Maymar area. The security guard employed at a floor mill was recording a video with his friend to post it on the popular short-video sharing app TikTok when he accidentally shot and killed himself.

    The police said the video saved in his mobile phone shows him putting a rifle on his chest. During the recording, he accidentally pulls the trigger of the rifle resulting in his death.

    The deceased, identified as Anwar Ali, was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was declared dead.

    Meanwhile, his friend, who was filming the video with him has been taken into custody.

    Police arrested a woman in Sukkur on Saturday for allegedly setting her house on fire after her father refused to pay for her TikTok video.

    As per reports, Marvi Khilji was arrested after her father, Abdul Aziz, registered a complaint at a police station that she had set fire to their house when refused to finance a modelling video for her TikTok account.

    Abdul Aziz who is a retired employee of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), with Rs25,000 as pension claimed in his complaint that she had demanded for Rs200,000. When he refused, she got angry and set fire to the house that destroyed a fridge and a washing machine.

    Upon the father’s complaint, police arrested Khilji and the court then sent her to Sukkur jail for 14 days.

    Police arrest TikToker for posing as a beggar

    A TikToker was arrested by the police in Sialkot for posing as a beggar.

    As per reports, the TikToker was found begging in Daska after disguising himself as a beggar. The patrolling police of the area found him suspicious and took him into custody. Upon interrogation, they discovered US dollars, Riyals and Pounds from his pocket.

    The police said that the youth was misleading people by disguising himself as a beggar but was later identified as a TikTok star, when he washed out his face.

    He has been taken into custody by the police over charges of deceiving people.

    ‘TikToker’ is now a real word

    Collins Dictionary has officially recognised TikToker as a real-world, describing it as “someone who shares content on the social media platform TikTok”. TikTok is an app that can be used for creating and sharing short videos. It was initially launched as Douyin in September 2016 in China. The following year, the app was launched by ByteDance for markets outside of China.

    TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps in Pakistan. According to some estimates, the app has been installed 43 million times in Pakistan, with 14.7 million of those coming in the year 2020 alone.

    Other words which have been taken from social media and introduced in the dictionary include ‘BLM’, ‘Mukbang’ and ‘Megixt.

    BLM, short for ‘Black Lives Matter’ was widely used on the internet during the recent black lives matter protests, while the term ‘Mukbang’ originating in South Korea refers to people who broadcast videos of themselves eating large quantities of food.

    ‘Megixt’, which refers to the withdrawal of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from royal duties, has also been given the status of a real word.

    Meanwhile, Collins has announced ‘lockdown’ as its Word of The Year in 2020 following a dramatic increase in its usage during the spread of COVID-19.

    Lexicographers (a person who compiles dictionaries) said they picked the word because it had become synonymous with the experience of populations across the world as governments look to curb the coronavirus pandemic.

    Because of the way the pandemic has affected the daily use of language, six of Collins’ 10 words of the year in 2020 are related to the global health crisis.

    ‘Coronavirus’, ‘social distancing’, ‘self-isolate’ and ‘furlough’ as well as ‘lockdown’ and ‘key worker’ were included in the longer list of 10 words of the year.

    Helen Newstead, a language consultant at Collins, said: “Lockdown has affected the way we work, study, shop, and socialise. With many countries entering a second lockdown, it is not a word of the year to celebrate but it is, perhaps, one that sums up the year for most of the world.”

    Collins defines ‘lockdown’ as “the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction, and access to public spaces”.

    Police arrested a man in Peshawar who was posing as a policeman with PTI leader Taimoor Hassan Khan in multiple TikTok videos.

    As per reports, the man is employed as a private bodyguard with Sahibzada Taimur Hassan. The accused posted many videos on social media, which were pointed out by the Capital City Police social media team.

    Fake cards, police uniforms and weapons were recovered from the bodyguard. A case has also been registered against the Sahibzada Taimoor Hassan.

    PTA removes ban on TikTok after management assures monitoring

    The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has removed the ban on video-sharing application TikTok, after assurances from the platform’s management. According to details, TikTok has assured the regulatory body that they will block all accounts indulged in spreading ‘obscenity and immorality’.

    PTA, in a tweet, confirmed that TikTok will moderate all accounts in accordance with local laws.

    Earlier on October 9, PTA had blocked the social media application after receiving multiple complaints from “different segments of society against immoral/indecent content on the video-sharing application TikTok”.

    This came after a final warning to TikTok was issued in July over explicit content posted on the platform. PTA said TikTok was given “considerable time to respond and comply with” instructions for the development of an effective mechanism for proactive moderation of “unlawful online content” but TikTok “failed to fully comply” with the regulator’s instructions.

    TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps in Pakistan. According to some estimates, the app has been installed 43 million times in Pakistan, with 14.7 million of those coming in the year 2020 alone.

    Meanwhile, TikTok had issued a statement on Saturday which called for the lifting of the ban on the app.

    “If the Government of Pakistan decides to reopen access to our services in the future, we will certainly assess our allocation of resources to this market,” the Chinese social media giant had said in a statement.

    People are bashing Tiktoker Ali Khan Hyderabadi on social media for allegedly making fun of a dark-skinned girl.

    According to details, Ali, during a live session to engage with his followers on Instagram, made fun of a girl’s complexion. In the video, Ali can be heard saying that the kid with him is getting scared and asked the girl to ‘clean her camera’. 

    The video clearly shows Ali saying,”bol raha hai kaali larki” as he insensitively joked about the girl’s skin colour.

    Soon after, the video went viral on social media and people started bashing the TikToker.

    Youtuber Saad ur Rehman aka Ducky bhai has also criticized Ali Khan.

    TikTok’s most-followed star Jannat Mirza, in a recent interactive session with her fans, revealed that she is moving to Japan. Mirza had recently posted a picture of herself in Tokyo, Japan on Instagram, prompting fans to ask this question.

    When a follower asked Mirza if she is moving to Japan, the TikTokers replied: “Jee“.

    Later when someone asked why she is moving, Jannat said that though Pakistan is “very nice’, the people of Pakistan and their mentality is not. Jannat also posted a story of Komal Aziz Khan in which the actor was criticised for wearing modern clothes abroad.

    While Jannat said that she is moving to Japan, she also shared that she will be coming back to Pakistan in November. According to details, Jannat will be returning to work on a film with renowned Pakistani Director Syed Noor.

    Mirza was also asked questions on TikTok and the ban on it, to which she replied that the ban will be lifted soon.

    Jannat was also asked some personal questions. When a follower commented that she should marry fellow TikTok star Umer Butt, who has been a regular feature in her videos, Jannat replied that she would “rather die” than marry him. Jannat further said that she is not in love with anyone.

    Petition filed in LHC to block TikTok through VPNs, proxies

    A citizen approached the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday requesting authorities concerned to block the use of TikTok through Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and proxies.

    In his petition, the petitioner explained that people are still using Tiktok through VPN and some other proxies. The court was pleaded to direct the government to ban the use of TikTok through VPN and proxies as well.

    Meanwhile, social media star Hareem Shah slammed the government’s decision to ban the video-sharing app saying that it is only a diversion from real issues like wheat flour crisis and rape cases. She said that YouTube and other social media sites also carry content which is questionable.

    Shah further explained her point saying that if nails grow on fingers we cut the nails, not the hands.

    On the other hand, the most followed TikTok Star Jannat Mirza supported the government on the ban but said it should not be on permanent basis.

    Many other prominent personalities including Shahid Afridi and Imran Abbas supported the ban on Tiktok.

    The Government of Pakistan banned TikTok on Friday due to “immoral/indecent” content being shared on the social media platform. The ban has sparked uncertainty in the content creator industry considering that a great number of people earn from social media.

    However, Federal Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunication Aminul Haque on Saturday had clarified that the government will lift the ban on TikTok after removal of objectionable content.
